Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, the parent body of Bhavan's College, is a voluntary, ever-growing, apolitical

national movement with an international outlook, devoted to life, literature and culture. Kulpati Dr. K. M.

Munshiji founded the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, in 1938, almost a decade before India's independence.

Today it is fondly referred to simply as “The Bhavan” and has under its umbrella 320 constituent

institutions with 112 centers in India and 7 centers overseas. Munshiji was a multifaceted personality with

a brilliant career and his firm belief in Indian culture and values has been the guiding force of The Bhavan's

success and that of the many establishments founded by him.

BHAVAN'S COLLEGE AND CAMPUS

Kulapati Munshiji created many centers of learning and culture. Bhavan's College situated in the heart of

Mumbai is one of the Bhavan's first institutions of higher education. The foundation stone of the College

was laid by former President of Independent India Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan and the College was

inaugurated by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel the Iron Man of India in 1946. The College is affiliated to the

University of Mumbai and is eligible for academic and research grants from University Grants

Commission. In the year 2003-04, the College was accredited grade B++ with 82% by National

Assessment and Accreditation Council for the period from 2004-2009. The College is currently in the

process of seeking re-accreditation. Bhavan's College is one of the very few colleges which have the

privilege to have completed 66years of dedicated service in the field of education and celebrated its

Diamond Jubilee in the very first decade of the new millennium.

The College is located at a walkable distance from the railway station at Andheri (W), approachable by

road and a number of bus routes. The College has a vast green scenic campus. The College has well

equipped library, computer laboratories scientific laboratories, huge playground, Gymkhana,

Gymnasium, NCC wings for girls and boys and two NSS units – Junior as well as Degree. The College has

a host of qualified, experienced and dedicated teachers to guide the students at the Undergraduate as

well as post graduate level. The College has a strong faculty of 100 eminent and versatile teachers with

over 40% possessing a Doctorate Degree and about 10% involved in offering consultancy services.

However the main strength of the College is the large number of students. Since the last few years the

College is registering about 9000 students per year.

ACADEMICS

SEMESTER BASED CREDIT AND GRADING SYSTEM : SBCGS

From the Academic Year 2011-2012, at the entry-point in Degree Programmes (like B.A; B.Sc; & B.Com.), the University of Mumbai has Introduced: Semester pattern of academic session and credit based grade point system of evaluation. 40%/25% * internal assessment and 60%/ 75% * external assessment per semester will be the norm for credit based grade point system of evaluation. From the acadamic year 2012-13 the system is introduced at entry point for PG programme as well.

For self Financing Courses conducted in the College viz: BMS & B.Sc.(I.T.) The semester pattern and combination of internal and external assessment was already in practice. However, now the evaluation will be as per the credit-based grade point system.

iii) Credit: “Credit” refers to the learning hours or workload of a student. One credit is equal to 30 learning

hours. A credit is composed of two parts (a) the time actually spend by the student in classroom/laboratery

for academic session like lecture, tutorials and practicals and (b) the time spend by the student for

completing assignments, projects, Library work for completion of the course, (The list is illustrative and not

exhaustive). The (a) and (b) parts credits are defined as an integral part of a course.

iv) Credits are earned by the student

v) Credit completion takes place after the learner has successfully cleared all the evaluation criteria for the course.

vi) Total Credit Value for a UG course is 120 credits.

BEYOND GRADUATION:

The College offers post graduate programmes by papers as well as research, in the faculty of Science.

M.Sc.: College enrolls students for M.Sc. Programmes (by papers research) in the following departments: Botany, Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics and Zoology. Since the Academic Year 2012 - 2013, Scholars admitted to M.Sc. will be admitted to Semester Based Credit and Grading Pattern.

About the course

This is novel course introduced by the University of Mumbai wherein a student gets a degree and diploma simultaneously.

It is a career oriented add on course wherein at the end of first year, student gets a certificate in Biotechnology, at the end of second year the student gets a diploma in biotechnology and at the end of third year the student is eligible to get a degree in a conventional science subjects and an advanced diploma in Biotechnology, all in span of three years..COURSE STRUCTURE

1) The student obtain a Degree in a conventional subjects like Zoology or Botany. Simultaneosly the student get a certificate/diploma in Biotechnology at the end of first and second year respectively.

2) The student get an advance diploma certificate if he/she wishes to continue for the third year with conventional degree in Zoology or Botany.

3) ON THE JOB TRAINING for a month is an integral part of Vocational courses.

EXAMINATION

The examination and Evaluation pattern is subject to rules and regulations of University of Mumbai / Government, in existence at the time when the prospectus goes into print and may be modified from time to time in accordance with notification from University of Mumbai / the Government.

As per the SBCGS, Examination of F.Y. & S.Y. ie Semester I to Semester IV are conducted by the College whereas those of Semester V & Semester VI are conducted by the University.

TYPE OF EXAMINATION / EVALUATION CONDUCTED BY COLLEGE FOR EACH COURSE:1. Regular Internal Examination (during the Semester)2. Additional Internal Examination (before 15 days of external Semester end examination)3. Regular Semester End Examination (at the end of the Semester)4. Additional Semester End Examination.

Semester End Examination consist of theory and practical examination as per the pattern prescribed by Mumbai University. Students who for reasons considered valid by the Principal may be allowed to appear for additional Semester End Examination

Internals Assessment: A learner may be assessed on any of the following: class tests, assignments, field trips, class interactions, leadership qualities and similar activities deemed appropriate by the college.ELIGIBILITY TO APPEAR FOR ADDITIONAL SEMESTER END EXAMINATION

1) INTERNAL ASSESSMENT :

Eligibility and protocol to appear for the additional class test or assignment for learners who are absent for regular internal examination.

a) The learner must apply to the Head of the Institution giving the reason (s) for absence within 8 days of the conduct of the examination along with the necessary documents and testimonials.

b) If the learner is absent for participation in Inter Collegiate events, State for National or International level events, training camp or coaching camp organized by authorized university or state or national or international bodies, NSS/NCC Events / camps/cultural activities / sports activities / research festival or any other activities authenticated by the head of the institution, the head of the institution shall generally grant permission to the learner to appear for the additional class test or assignment.

2) ADDITIONAL SEMESTER END EXAMINATION :

A learner who does not appear i.e. remains absent in some or all the courses on medical grounds or for representing the college / university in sports, cultural activities, of NSS, NCC or sports training camps conducted by recognized bodies/competent authorities or for any other reason which is considered valid under exceptional circumstances and to the satisfaction of the Principal or the Head of the Institute OR fails n some or all the subjects is eligible to appear for the additional examination.

SATANDARD OF PASSINGThe learners to pass a course shall have to obtain a minimum of 40 % marks aggregate in internal as well as external examination separately for each course where the course consists of Internal Assessment & Semester End Examination.The learners shall obtain minimum of 40 % / 25% * marks in the Internal Assessment and 60% / 75% * marks in Semester End Examination separately, to pass the course and minimum of Grade E in the project component, wherever applicable to pass a particular semester. A learner will be said to have passed, the course if the learner passes the Internal Assessment & Semester End Examination together.

As per O : 8439Additional Examination for Semester I and Semester II be held after the conduct of Semester II Examination in March/April every year and Additional Examination for Semester III and Semester IV be held after the conduct of Semester IV Examination in March / April every year. However, Additional Examination for Semester II and Semester IV be held after 20 days and before 40 days from the date of declaration of result of the respective Semester End Examination.

c) The learner who remains absent with prior permission of the Principal of the college, may be permitted to appear for the additional examination.

CARRY FORWARD OF THE MARKS IF THE LEARNER FAILS IN ONE OR MORE COURSES :

A learner who passes in the Internal Examination but fails in the Semester End Examination of the Course shall reappear for the Semester End Examination of that course, However his/her marks of the Internal Examination shall be carried over and he/she shall be entitled for credit & grade obtained by him/her on passing the entire course.A learner who passes in the Semester End Examination but fails in the Internal Assessment of the courses shall reappear for the Internal Examination of the course. ORIf the learner fails in not more than four courses of Semester I and Semester II taken together with failure in not more than two courses each in semester I & II

c) A learner shall be allowed to keep term for Semester IV irrespective of number of heads of failure in Semester III.

d) A learner shall be allowed to keep terms for Semester V if he/she passes Semester I, Semester II, Semester III and Semester IV

ORIf the learner passes Semester I and Semester II and fails in not more than four courses of Semester III and

Semester IV taken together with failure in not more than two courses each in sem. III & Sem IVOR

iii) A learner shall be allowed to keep terms for Semester IV irrespective of grades obtained in each course of Semester III.

PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT AND STUDENT’S SUPPORT OPPORTUNITIES

LIBRARY

The Main library is housed in Mulraj Khatau Hall and has more than 55000 books including encyclopedias,

handbooks, and general knowledge books. There is a spacious reading room which accommodates 200 students at

a time. It is open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., the time is extended to 10 p.m. during examinations. Apart from Home-

Lending system against readers tickets on a weekly basis, there are Book-Bank facilities whereby by a student can

borrow books for a year on deposit basis. There are departmental libraries too in subjects like Mathematics, Physics,

History, English and Chemistry. A good library is the backbone of higher education and our college library definitely

fulfills this requirement. Students may enroll themselves as student volunteers in the library. The library staff of the

College trains enrolled students in Library and Information Science Skills like Cataloguing, Circulation, Library

Management, Laws of Library Science etc. and in some basic computer skills M.S. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Web

designing and Computer networking. The course is absolutely free of cost and after the completion of the program or

at the end of December all the volunteers will be issued an experience certificate, which will be help in future career

prospects. Volunteers' performance will be observed during the period and a best library volunteer for the year will be

chosen and will be felicitated with a certificate and a trophy.

Students can enroll in N.S.S. as volunteers. An N.S.S. volunteer should be in the unit for 2 years either 1st

Volunteers who complete social work of 120 hours and one rural camp of 10 days will get certificate from

University of Mumbai. Under University Ordinance 0.229 a student will be awarded ten grace marks per

SPORTS

The College GYMKHANA has facilities for games and sports like Cricket Football, Volley-Ball, Kho-Kho,

Kabbadi, Table-Tennis, Chess, Carom etc. The College has a spacious sports Ground suitable for all field

and track events. Gymkhana Common Room is open from 8.30a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All the students of the

College are the members of the Gymkhana. Annual Competitions in Indoor games and Outdoor games

are conducted by the College. The selected students are sent to represent the College at inter-collegiate

competitions fulfilling our founder's vision of Education as an Art of Self Sculpture.

Talent Search : College organizes Talent Search i.e. competitions amongst our students in various

Cultural events like singing. Instrumental music, dance, dramatics etc. in the month of July/August. The

selected students are given opportunity to represent our College at various inter-collegiate competitions,

'O2' the Fest ; In the month of December, every year the College hosts Inter Collegiate Fest called 'O2 the

Fest - Where life begins' It is a three day period full of exciting extra curricular activities including Fine Arts,

RAY FILM FESTIVAL

Since the year 2009-10 collage organizes Inter Collegiate Students Film, Festival called Ray Film Festival

named after the eminent film maker SATYAJIT RAY. The festival include events like making short film,

KULAPATI MUNSHI MEMORIAL ESSAY -WRITING AND ELOCUTION COMPETITION

The Kulapati Memorial Intercollegiate Essay Writing and Elocution Competition is an annual feature which hones

the verbal and presentation skills of students who write and speak eloquently on topics of political. social,

economic, scientific relevance. The students write essays and present speeches on the assigned topics which are

of political social, economic scientific and philosophical relevance. Cash awards, certificates and participation

certificate are awarded by the College as well as the rotating trophy to the winners.

WOMEN'S DEVELOPMENT CELL :

Bhavan's College has had the foresight and is one of the few colleges in Mumbai city which has established the

Women's Development Cell. The cell functions as a body which hears grievances (if any) from women staff and

students regarding matters of physical and mental safety and well being.The WDC also engages itself in women

A Placement Cell is being run efficiently under the guidance of our College professors. This cell provides immense

College is a member of NEN: National Entrepreneurship Network and is the first Arts, Science and Commmerce

COLLEGE DISCIPLINE

The College attaches great importance to discipline and the same must be scrupulously observed by the students.

Failure to comply with any of the rules, regulations or requirements notified from time to time will lead to strict disciplinary action including removing the name of the student from the College roll. At the time of admission the College provides all information. Book titled 'Infomate' must read “Infomate” supplied to them along with the Identity Card and carry it everyday to College.

1. All students are responsible to the Principal, the Vice Principals and members of the staff for their conduct

in the Public, on the campus as well as outside.

2. Insubordination, abusive language or misbehaviour, misconduct can lead to the dismissal of a student.

3. Demonstration of any kind in the College is strictly prohibited.

4. In case of sickness, a leave application shall have to be submitted to the College office along with a medicalcertificate within two days of resuming the College. Fitness certificate at the time of resuming the Collegeis essential, if the absence due to sickness is for more than one week.

1. Students are advised to attend all lectures, practical and tutorials regularly. Employed students are advised to seek admission through Institute of Distance Education, University of Mumbai.

2. According to Ordinance 0.119, for granting terms in each subject minimum attendance of 75% of the theory, lectures, practices & tutorials (wherever prescribed) separately will be required out of the total number lectures, practical and tutorials in the subject conducted in the terms as declared by the University.

3. According to Ordinance 0.125 to keep a term at a College or a recognized institution, an undergraduate must complete, to the satisfaction of the Principal or the Head of the institute the course of the study at the College or institution prescribed by the University for the class to which such undergraduate belongs.

4. After seeking admission please read the attendance rules and regulations mentioned in detail in the academic dairy termed “ Infomate” provided to every student at the time of admission along with an Identity Card.

Identity Cards: All students must wear their valid Identity Cards issued by the College when they are on

the College campus even on Sundays and holidays or else strict disciplinary action will be taken against them.

Use of Mobile phone: Use of Mobile phones is strictly prohibited on the college campus. Any loss of

mobile phones is the absolute responsibility of student, and no complaints of loss of mobile will be entertained

by the staff of the college.

Anti-National Activities: The students while studying in any College, if found indulging in anti-national activities

contrary to the provision of Acts and Laws enforced by Government or in any activity contrary to rules of

discipline, will be liable to be expelled from the College without any notice by the Principal of the College.

“Infomate” contains information on all the relevant University Statutes and Ordinances as well as Rules of Discipline

imposed by the College which have to be read and strictly followed by all bonafide students of the College.

Anti Ragging Rules

UGC Guidelines on Student’s Entitlements

The UGC has prepared a charter of student’s entitlements that lists out the various entitlements of all students

alongwith other student-related services and simplified procedure for redressal of grievances. UGC guidelines

on student’s entitlement are available on the UGC website “www ugc.ac.in” student can refer to the website.

ACTION AGAINST RAGGING: MAHARASHTRA PROHIBITION OF RAGGING ACT 1999 WHICH IS IN EFFECTFROM 15TH MAY 1999 HAS THE FOLLOWING PROVISIONS FOR ACTION

AGAINST RAGGING.

a) Ragging within or outside of any educational institution is prohibited.

b) Whosoever directly or indirectly commits, participates in, abets or propagates ragging within or outside any educational institution shall, on conviction, be punished with imprisonment for a term up to 2 years and /or penalty which may extend to ten thousand rupees.

c) Any student convicted of an offence of ragging shall be dismissed form the educational institution and such students shall not be admitted in any other educational institution for a period of five years form the date of order of such dismissal.

d) Whenever any student or, as the case may be, the parent or guardian or a teacher of an educational institution complaints, in writing, of ragging to the Head of the Educational Institution, the head of the education institution shall, without prejudice to the foregoing provisions, within seven days of the receipt of the complaint enquire into the matter mentioned in the complaint and if, prima facie, it is found true, suspend the student who is accused of the offence, and shall immediately forward the complaint to the police station having jurisdiction over the area in which the educational institution is situated, for further action. Where, on enquiry by the head of the educational institution, it is found that there is no substance, prima facie, in the complaint received; he/she shall intimate the fact, in writing, to the complainant. The decision of the Head of the Educational Institution shall be final.

e) If the head of the educational institution fails or neglects to act in the manner specified in section “d” above when a complaint of ragging is made, such person shall be deemed to have abetted the offence and shall, on conviction, be punished as provided for in section 'b” above. If any of the statement made in application form or any information supplied by the candidate in connection with his or her admission is later on at any time, found to be false or incorrect his or her admission will be cancelled, fees forfeited and he or she may be expelled from the College by the Principal.

Submission of Datasheet (Pre-Admission Form)

1. Separate datasheet along with online pre-admission registration form has to be filled for each course if the candidate wants to apply for more than one course.

2. Datasheet has to be filled carefully.

3. Following documents should be attached to the datasheet along with pre-admission online registration form

Attested copies of the SSC and HSC/ equivalent examination mark sheets.

Attested copy of school leaving certificate (for proof of birth date)

Attested copy of the caste certificate and validity if applicable for SC/ST/VJ/NT/OBC/SBC candidates

Attested copy of the proof in support of claim under 3% quota/handicapped category.

Provisional eligibility certificate issued by University of Mumbai, for students of boards other than H. S.C. Board Maharashtra, seeking admission to Degree Programmes as per 0.111 of University of Mumbai.

4. When the datasheet is submitted, staff of the college will acknowledges and provides you with counterfoil of the datasheet. This is very important, preserve the counter foil and note the datasheet number.

5. Present the counter foil of the datasheet with signature of the staff of College, for any queries regarding your admission. The data sheet number is necessary for the College to provide you the information you are seeking.

6. Be patient and maintain the discipline when you are submitting the datasheet & pre-admission registration form

About the merit list

1. The College displays the merit list, normally as per the norms laid down by Mumbai University and Government of Maharashtra.

2. The merit list gives score at HSC/equivalent examination, category under which the merit is accorded (open, reserved, 3% quota etc.)

3. As per the norms, 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th merit list, may be displayed, according to schedule prescribed by the University.

4. In case of any discrepancy in the merit list, approach the Principal regarding the same.

5. Decision of the Principal would be final & binding.

6. Note down the details relevant to your order in the merit.

Reservation of Seats

For admission, the College follows reservations both legal and social as per directives of the Government of Maharashtra; and as notified by the University of Mumbai. The allotment of seats for various reserved categories is as follows:

I) SC: 13% ii) ST: 7% iii) DT (A): 3% iv) NT (B): 2.5%

v) NT (C): 3.5% vi) NT (D): 2% vii) OBC: 19%15% seats are allotted under management quota while 3% of seats are alotted to eligible candidates who are

physically challenged. Some seats are alotted to meritorious students with achievements in sports/ cultural activities

/ Ex-servicemen's ward / Freedom Fighter's ward or grand children / widow or divorcee girl students.

Please Ensure:

1) A separate pre admission form must be submitted for each course and at the correct venue in the

College during the time schedule notified by the University of Mumbai.

2) Every pre-admission form must be submitted along with all the necessary documents mentioned above.

3) Incomplete pre-admission forms are likely to be rejected.4) If a student wants to apply under more than one category e.g. general and also 3%. Separate application

forms must be submitted for each category at the notified venue.

ADMISSION

1. Provisional: All Admissions are Provisional subject To the Approval Of the University of Mumbai henceforth referred to as the University. The admissions are at the discretion of the Principal of the College and subject to Rules and Regulations of the University of Mumbai/Government

2. * Enrolment: At the time of admission in F.Y.B.A, F.Y.B.Com., F.Y. B.Sc., F.Y. B.M.S., F.Y. B.M.M. and F.Y. B.Sc. I.T. class the students are required to fill in the University enrolment form without which the admission will not be approved by the University of Mumbai. If they fail to fill in the enrolment form their admission will be treated as Null & Void.

3. Fees and Forms: No students will be deemed as admitted to the College unless he/she has filled in fresh admission form for the academic year and has paid the necessary fees and deposits as approved by the University.

4. Results and admission for Bhavanites: A student of this College who has qualified for admission to a higher class will be admitted to such class only if an application in the prescribed form duly completed has been received with the necessary fees within one week from the date of declaration of the result of the qualifying examination, or as per the schedule notified by the College office.

5. Admissions to students of Other College/University:

a) Student from other colleges affiliated to University of Mumbai, seeking admission to Bhavan's College must submit a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the College where he/she studied in the previous year. Once admitted to Bhavan's College, he/she must apply for the transfer certificate in a prescribed form available in the college office. It is the responsibility of the student to obtain the transfer certificate and no objection certificate from his/her previous college and submit it to the head-clerk in the college office in time. If transfer certificate is not submitted in time, examination form will not be sent to the University.

b)* *Eligibility from University of Mumbai: For admission to a particular course, applicants from other Universities must support their statements of the last examination passed by attaching the certificates of passing and must also produce the provisional eligibility certificate from University of Mumbai. Students should submit the necessary documents within one week of the commencement of the term at the College office for confirmation of eligibility certificate. This is followed by submission of Transfer/Migration certificate.

6. Cancellation of admission in ll Term: A student once admitted in the first term will be considered as duly enrolled for the second term also unless he/she informs in writing his/her intention to leave the college at least one month before the commencement of the second term. Students who fail to give such information before the opening of the second term will be required to pay the full fess for the second term.

7. Repeaters: Repeaters of the College shall not be admitted as regular students. They will be permitted to appear as ex-students during the annual examinations according to the University rules in existence provided they apply for the same.

8. Faculty change: Once a student passes in one faculty, he/she shall not be admitted to any other faculty.9. Admission can be considered to be granted only when the full fees for the academic year are paid, an official

receipt has been issued and the name of the applicant appears on the relevant roll of the programme to which admitted. Payment in full or in part can be condoned or deferred by the Principal .

10. All admissions, both for undergraduates and post graduate classes are valid only for that academic year and are, therefore, to be renewed for each subsequent year of study. Students who misbehave and have serious complaints of indiscipline against them during the year will not be readmitted to the College, for the next academic year.

11. Admission is purely on merit and is subject to availability of seats as per the directions issued by University of Mumbai and Government of Maharashtra from time to time. A transparent admission procedure is followed strictly based on the standard norms. Any modification in admission guidelines will be notified on the College notice board at the time of admission. The management of the College does not accept any donation or capitation fee for admission to any programme offered by the College.

The public is cautioned not to fall prey to any misleading information regarding admission in the College against donation or compromise the transparency of admission process.

FEESPAYMENT DETAILS

1. Admission granted shall be held invalid, if full payment of necessary tuition fees and deposits is not made on

the same day on which admission is granted.2. Full fees must be paid, along with the necessary deposits in the fee structure as prescribed by University of

Mumbai at the time of admission to the College in the first term. Students who fail to pay their tuition fees by

the due date in the college office are liable for disciplinary action including the removal of his/her name from

the college register. No student will be permitted ordinarily, to apply for any of the University examinations if

he/she has not paid the college fees for the Year.3. Post graduate students will have to pay registration fees to the University, in addition to the College fees.4. A research student is required to pay the necessary fee as per the fee structure from the date of his/her

admission and/or enrollment as a post graduate research student till the date of submission of his/her

thesis, for the term in which the thesis is submitted. 5. Students of other colleges affiliated to the University of Mumbai will have to pay Transfer Fee through this

College Office at the time of admission.6. For any discrepancy, the decision of the Principal will be final in the matters of fee/concession in fees etc.

REFUND OF FEES( Circular No. UG/412 of 2008 dt. 11/09/ 2008)

As per 0.2859 and circular No. UG/412 of 2008 dt. 11/09/ 2008 mentioned after admission is granted by the college, to student, if the student does not want to continue his/her in the college for any valid reason, the student need to apply for condition of admission. If the admission is cancelled, The student will be entitled to the amount of fees paid by the student on term and condition mentioned in the table below and in accordance with provision of the above mentioned circular

v) From 1st September to 30th September 60% of the total amount of fees

vi) After 30th September 100% of the total amount of fees
