Task 1

Dr Pam Green is a lecturer in law at the University of Mansford. Every week she hosts a radio phone-in programme for people who need legal advice. Read this extract from her programme, answer the questions and complete the government leaflet below.

Pam: And our next caller is Tony. So, Tony, what's the problem?

Tony: Well, Dr Green, I'm living in a rented flat and my landlord phoned me today and asked

me to leave tomorrow. You see, I'm really worried because I haven't got anywhere else

to go ...

Pam: Well, don't worry, Tony, you don't have to leave unless your landlord gets a special

document called a 'court order'.

Tony: Oh, I see. Do you think I should stop paying the rent now?

Pam: No, Tony, you mustn't do that – if you don't pay the rent, the landlord will be able to

evict you easily. So you must go on paying it.

Tony: Well, what else can I do? Should I get a lawyer?

Pam: Oh, you needn't do that. In fact you needn't do anything except wait.

Tony: But how can I wait? I'm so worried.

Pam: Well, you needn't worry, Tony, you see, the law is on your side. If a landlord wants to

evict somebody he has to give at least one month's notice in writing, and then he has to

apply for the court order which also takes one month – so you've at least two months to

find another flat.

a) Is it necessary for Tony to leave tomorrow?

b) Is it necessary for Tony to get a lawyer?

c) Is it a good idea for Tony to stop paying the rent?
