May Fifteen………., May Fifteen………., why would anyone call a business May Fifteen? What is significant about this date? Time for a little detective work. (Well, a search on Google about 15th May at least).

15th May 1937 Madeleine Albright, America’s first female secretary of state is born. Perhaps this company in some way deals with the political history of the United States throughout the 20th century? Na, I don’t buy that one.

15th May 1947 The first test of an Allied aircraft using jet propulsion. Ok, maybe it’s something to do with aviation during the Second World War? Not likely.

15th May 1990 Vincent Van Gogh’s portrait of ‘Doctor Gachet’ is sold for $82.5 million at Christies auction house in New York, setting a new world record for the sale of a single painting. Perhaps May Fifteen are art dealers, specialising in the works of Vincent Van Gogh? More plausible than the previ-ous two, but I’m still not convinced. Let’s try one more.

15th May 2009 One year to the day that Jeni Banks finished her last exam in Uni. Jeni Banks’s 24th birthday. May Fifteen the company began trading. Bingo!

So, what is May Fifteen? Turn the page and find a world of classy sophistication and very sexy networking……….

Page 36: Your Business eZine | Liverpool | October

DLIB Livercool Sexy Fe-male Networker of the Year nominated Jeni Banks is a young lady

on a mission. Since starting her business, funnily enough on 15th May this year, Jeni has earned a tremendous reputation amongst the business community in Liver-pool. But where did she come from and more importantly, what does she do.

Jeni was originally from a small village called Wetherall, just out-side of Carlisle. As a young girl, Jeni could best be described as ‘a pretty little tom boy’, wearing

her pretty clothes her parents so proudly put on her and getting them covered in mud. At the age of 6, Jeni saw a Guitar and decided she wanted to play. Determined and knowing what she wanted from an early age, she diligently attended lessons and became a very proficient Classical Guitarist. Another pas-sion for Jeni was her swimming. She swam for her local team and this culminated in her coming 3rd in the entire country at 100mt freestyle at just 14 years of age. At 18 Jeni left home and went to live with nuns in Fiji, were she worked with disabled children

and learned sign language over a 7 month period. After this she travelled for a while, visiting plac-es like Zulu land on the African continent, and then going on to Australia, New Zealand and Sin-gapore. Eventually, at the age of 20, she came back to England, to Liverpool John Moores Univer-sity to do a degree in Business and Finance.

In her 2nd year in uni, Jeni went to do some voluntary work for a company called Milky Tea, owned by Jon Holmes. It was Jon who first introduced Jeni to the wonderful world of network-

Page 37: Your Business eZine | Liverpool | October
Page 38: Your Business eZine | Liverpool | October
Page 39: Your Business eZine | Liverpool | October

ing, and despite her initial reser-vations, she was hooked straight away. In her 3rd year, Jeni did a placement and her disserta-tion with a company called New Reality, (a film and photography company). They were obviously impressed with her, as when she graduated they took her on as a Business Manager. Then, in August 08, Jeni went to work for Black and Ginger, again as a business manager. It was here that she was really able get some serious networking done and she loved it. Then one day last Oc-tober, on the train on her way home from work, she suddenly conceived the idea for her net-working company. Not any ordi-nary networking company, there are plenty of people in the city already doing that, and doing it well. No, what Jeni wanted to do was different. Given her already vast experience in networking, Jeni understood that the biggest problems most businesses have regarding networking are either, they are too busy to attend the huge number of events out there themselves, or they are too ner-vous to attend. This is were May Fifteen can help.

Firstly, for the novice, or nervous networker, Jeni does what she calls her Buddy System. This is were she will meet up with her cli-ent for 1 hour before a network-ing event and coach him/ her on networking techniques and also what to aim for from this specific event. Then she will take this cli-ent into the event and walk them through the whole thing, even finding the best people to meet and making introductions. Now, I know you can go on training courses with groups of people to learn networking techniques, and they’re not cheap, so to have a professional networker do a one hour one to one session and then work with you for a fur-ther couple of hours at an event, I was almost afraid to ask how much. But, being the profession-al that I am, I thought the readers will want to know, so I clenched my teeth and prepared to wince and asked the question. “How much”? £100. “I’m sorry what; I thought you said £100”. Yes, that’s it, I’ll say it again, just £100. I almost fell off my chair, and for those of you who know how big I am, you’ll know that’s quite dan-gerous. Please don’t shock me like that again.

Moving on, for the business peo-ple who don’t mind networking, but just can’t spare the time, (lets face it, you can spend day and night at networking events), there is the core of what May Fifteen offers. For a monthly fee, (ok, let’s get this one out the way straight away), of just £297, which includes all costs, Jeni will net-work on your behalf. That’s right, she will pay to go to as many net-working events as she can man-age and promote your business. She takes no commission for any work that you get from her net-working and you’re not tied into a contract at all, so you can do as many or as few months as you like. And that’s not all. When Jeni takes on a new client, she will sit down and do an in-depth corpo-rate analysis, (asking some very probing questions), in order to better understand your business, but to be honest, it helps you better understand your own busi-ness. It’s worth more than £297 just for this, never mind a month’s networking. But BEWARE, Jeni will only work with one client from each industry.

Page 40: Your Business eZine | Liverpool | October

So what makes Jeni so good at what she does? Well besides be-ing very creative and a super connector, she has an unusual way of looking at businesses. You see to Jeni, each business has it’s own character. Like a cari-cature. I’m not talking about the people in the business, we are talking about the business itself. For some it’s a cheeky little girl wearing a baseball cap back-wards, for others a professional looking woman, well read and very smart and business like, but wearing some very naughty un-derwear underneath her very smart business clothes. If you knew the businesses these relat-ed to, for some strange and inex-plicable reason, you would total-ly get the description. It seems to make perfect sense. Then there is the May Fifteen feeling. This is a feeling Jeni gets every time she gets some new business for a client of hers. Never for signing a new client herself, only for oth-ers. It’s a feeling of butterflies in the stomach, but Jeni being Jeni can also see the butterflies.

Jeni’s passion, not just for what she does, but for everything she talks about is captivating. You can’t help listening to what she is saying. She simply exudes enthu-siasm about everything or every-one she talks about. In fact the only time she didn’t, was when I deliberately pushed her to tell me about a person or business she didn’t like. Sitting there watch-ing whilst she fell silent trying to search her quite frankly vast and amazing memory for people and their businesses seemed somewhat unfair. She obviously doesn’t normally think this way. As a matter of fact, she was un-able to think of any and we were very quickly back to the efferves-cent and passionate Jeni.

So I’d like to tell you how I see May Fifteen as a character. I think it is a cross between a female James Bond and Ethan Hunt...
