niche you can think of – andeven some you can’t.
From city runabout (the A1goes on UK sale in a month orso) to Lamborghini-enginedsupercar (the fabulous R8),there’s an Audi for almosteveryone able to afford one.
But there’s one niche thatAudi’s German rivals at BMWhave had all to themselves fortoo long, thanks to one model– the M3.
Step forward, then, the carthat aims to take on the M3 atits own game – the new AudiRS5, a growling beast of athing guaranteed to alarmelderly neighbours every timeyou start it up.
The stylish A5 coupe onwhich it is based has beenwith us for some time now,and its sleek lines havebecome relatively familiar.
So, at standstill, apart froma wider stance and a moreaggressive-looking grille, theRS5 draws little extra
attention to itself.Fire up the 450PS, 4.2-litre
V8 engine, however, and it’s avery different story.
The RS snarls and roars,like a 1960s American musclecar fighting with a lion.
If you have even theslightest whiff of petrol inyour veins, you’ll find yourselfsearching for tunnels andunderpasses on your route,just to hear the noise echoingback off the concrete.
Unlike the lazy V8s of thoseclassic muscle cars, it likes torev, delivering its maximumpower around 8,250rpm.
The RS5 manages 0-62mphin just 4.6 seconds, with agoverned 155mph top speed,and is the most economical(26.2mpg combined) andcarbon-friendly (252g/km) inits class.
It gets its power on to theroad with the aid of Audi’sS-tronic twin-clutchtransmission and thecustomary quattro four-wheeldrive – 30 years after the first
Quattro took to the streets.There’s a newly-developed
centre differential as well,which sounds dull butactually isn’t when youdiscover how cleverly itspreads the power betweenfront and back wheels to makeit feel more like a rear-drivecar yet with thesure-footedness of four-wheeldrive.
The net result is handlingthat gets ever closer to the M3gold standard. However, thereare still some areas of the rideand handling that let the cardown.
For example, the Audi Drivesystem lets you choosebetween Comfort, Auto andDynamic settings, orcustomise your own profilewith the Individual button. Agreat system in theory andone that works well on Audiproducts like the Q7 and A8.
Not surprisingly, Comfortgives the most comfortableride over less than perfectroads (i.e. 90% of the UK).However, the other settingscan set your teeth on edge onanything less thanmirror-smooth tarmac.
The steering also changes
its characteristics accordingto Audi Drive settings, lightand easy in Comfort fornormal town driving and a bittoo firm in Dynamic.
In Auto mode, however, asthe processors have a bit of athink about speed andconditions before applying theappropriate weighting to thewheel, you feel strangelydisconnected from the road.
The weighting can changefrom moment to moment andit dulls the essential focus andmars the driving experienceof what is otherwise anexcellent performance car.
Perhaps the reasoning isthat it makes the car an easierproposition as an ‘everyday’car.
But with prices starting at£57,480, and an expected saleof around 250 this year and1,000 in 2011, are its likelyowners the kind of people whoneed an ‘everyday’ car?
Truth be told, they probablyhave something more sensiblefor that.
It’s those criticisms thatstop the RS5 taking over theM3’s mantle just yet.

ONCE was the timewhen pick-ups were thesole preserve of20-stone,Viyella-shirted deep
south good ol’ boys and Bob theBuilder.
But times change and people turnto driving upmarket lightcommercials that have more incommon with a luxury SUV than aplain old pick-up, circa theMitsubishi L200.
If there’s really such a thing as anelegant pick-up then this is it. Long,low and black, with the wordBARBARIAN embossed along eachside, the big Mitsubishi certainlycuts a dash – especially fromdrivers of more boxy-looking rivalswho might suspect the BaaBaa’s anexample of style over substance.
They’d be wrong because this is avehicle that serves both purposesthanks to a cabin that feelspremium quality and is equipped to
match and boasts a huge coveredload area capable of carryingdomestic or industrial materials.
The L200 was actually the UK’sbest-selling pick-up in 2009 and hassince been revised with a new lookplus a bit more power.
Standard kit has also beenimproved and prices range from£13,249 for the 4Work 4WD singlecab model to £26,936, including VAT,for the Barbarian double cab auto.
Sensibly, the L200 has beendesigned to cater for separate needs,the durable 4Work with itsfunctional interior appealing to
people seeking a no-nonsensebusiness tool while the 4Lifeversions add more comfort.
And Warrior and Barbarianmodels offer the blend of modernpick-up versatility with comfort,refinement and performance.
Latest L200 models also see thearrival of a new higher powerversion of the 2.5-litre Di-Dturbodiesel engine. The 175bhp unithas 13bhp more than itspredecessor, the medium powerengine retaining its 134bhp output,and fuel economy is improvedacross the board, both enginesreturning 34.9mpg on the officialcombined cycle.
As for emissions, well themedium power emits 215g/km andthe high power unit 214g/km;making the L200 among the mostefficient and low emitting vehiclesin its class.
While all models include afour-wheel drive system as
standard, the Barbarian benefitsfrom what they call Super Select4WD, which allows the L200 to bedriven in four-wheel drive at anyspeed – a boon if you need to tow.
It also boasts active stability andtraction control, a first in thepick-up market.
On the negative side the engine istoo noisy, though in a bizarre sort of
way the Barbarian is a vehicle thatsuits noisy.
And operating the sound systemcan prove fiddly due to tiny buttons,though there is a remote control.
Overall though, the L200 is a caryou really come to appreciate andenjoy, its commanding styledrawing admiring glanceseverywhere.
