THERE’S a lot to be saidfor keeping thingssimple. No space agesequence of switches, nomind-boggling array of

buttons around the steeringwheel, nor any elaborateinfo-tainment set-up to confusethe driver.

Just straightforward, cleardials and a radio that you prodto turn on or off.

It’s a concept Suzuki hasapplied successfully throughseven generations of the Altocity car, a model range thatstarts at £7,245 and celebratesits 30th birthday this year.

The Japanese company’sbrief for the original Alto wasto offer its home market a lowcost, practical car that was funto own and cheap to run.

And while these prioritiesremain, they have been joinedby an environmental concernthat has seen this smallestSuzuki become its flagship lowcarbon vehicle too.

That means CO2 emissions ofjust 103g/km from the threecylinder 1.0-litre engine attractsroad tax of only £35 a year.

This 68bhp unit is also usedin Suzuki’s Splash GLS model,and while the official figure of0-62mph in 13.5 secondssuggests powder puffperformance the reality is thatthe Alto actually feels quite anippy car, well capable ofholding its own on themotorway.

And when it comes torunning costs the little Suzukiis definitely a winner, boastingan average 64 miles per gallonplus Group One insurancerating for the base model.

Unusually for cars of its type,the Alto has an automaticoption as well as the standardfive-speed manualtransmission, though that costsan extra £600, is only availablein top spec SZ4 grade andeconomy is less impressive.

Interior space is surprisinglyagreeable. There’s plenty ofroom up front and the lack of athird seatbelt in the backmeans the two rear passengershave ample leg and elbow-room.

The boot is tiny though andyou need to fold down the rearseats to accommodate anything

more than overnight bags orsome shopping.

But the designers have donea sound job on the interior. Theseats have a trendy pattern andfeel hard-wearing, there’sdecent oddment space – roomfor six drinks bottles – and binsin all four doors.

The plastics feel a bit cheapbut the two-tone dash isactually quite smart and astand-alone rev counter pod sitson top of the facia, just to theright of the steering wheel.

Suzuki has certainlycompleted a slick job with thelatest Alto, which is far betterthajn its predecessor and adefinite threat to moreexpensive rivals like theCitroen C1, Toyota Aygo andFord Ka.

In fact you wonder whetherfans of prestige stablemate theRange Rover will be keen toshell out another £20,000 or sofor the extra luxury. That’show desirable the new Discohas become.

The changes, and there arecountless, have altered theDiscovery’s personality – itlooks sportier and moredynamic, is put together withgreater precision, is morefamily friendly and willappeal as a fashion statementtoo.

Yet the core values thathave defined this Land Rover’sreputation over 20 years notonly remain, but shift to ahigher level.

Take the Disco’s dynamics.New suspension components,better traction control,revised steering and largerbrakes have transformed theride and handling to the pointthat the big 4x4 is supersmooth, riding bumps withsuperb balance and showinggreat composure on all types

of surface.There have even been

enhancements to the LandRover’s key feature, TerrainResponse. The driving routetook us along the course of ariver – boulders and all –down slopes that give youvertigo just to look at andthrough deep ruts bubblingwith mud.

At no point did the feelingarise that you might get stuck,or fail to climb the hillside.

Then there was the viaductwith a huge portable ramp ontop. The sensation was one oftheme park trepidation as thetruck clicks its way up to thepoint of no return.

Any danger of coming off

the rails? Not a chance,especially when the car isfitted with a surround camerathat shows you exactly wherethe wheels are on either sideof the car. It’s worth everypenny of the additional cost –£587 or £850 depending onmodel.

While the existing 2.7-litreturbodiesel engine willremain as the entry point toDiscovery at £31,995, the new3.0 TDV6 is the one to go forand costs from £34,495 for thewell-equipped GS version.

It is a magnificently refinedunit developed with Jaguarthat delivers a near 10 percent improvement in fueleconomy and nine per cent

less CO2 emissions whileboosting power by 29 per cent.

Increases in pulling powerare even more – up by 36 percent – the 600Nm figureclaimed to be the highesttorque output of any sixcylinder passenger car dieselin the world.

Upshot is loads of punchand even though the car nowboasts a 0-60mph accelerationtime of exactly nine seconds,fuel is saved thanks to areduced idle speed, selectivebattery recharging, lower dragand more economical airconditioning.

The average official figureis 30.4mpg, though we gotcloser to the 27mpg mark.

Being honest I was never inlove with Discovery 3. It hasalways been wonderfuloff-road, but the styling andeveryday feel of the car didn’tconvince me.

Disco 4 is different. It’spractical, rock solid, great todrive and nicely styled – iteven has a trailer stabilityset-up that requires no inputfrom the driver. It’s got the lot.

And if you opt for either ofthe higher spec versions, XS(£40,495) and HSE (£47,695),the standard kit is extensive.

and a good deal of space?Perhaps then the Audi Q7’s little

brother, the Q5, is around at just theright moment.

With its rounded rather thansharp angles, streamlined shapeand athletic profile, the Q5 is a carthat makes a lot of sense to thosewho want a prestige SUV in a morecompact package than that of themonster Q7.

It uses some of that car’s enginestoo, the line-up comprising a2.0-litre TFSI petrol plus a pair ofdiesels – the tested 2.0 TDI and amore lusty 3.0 unit – and all usedirect fuel injection for betterefficiency.

Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drivesystem is standard to the range, sotop notch roadholding is assured,and while the Servotronicpower-assisted steering feels light atlow speed it loads up considerablyas you increase the pace.

The 2.0 diesel has been provingthe most popular model in the fewmonths since Q5 went on sale andit’s a quiet, smooth 170PS unit thathas six-speed manual transmissionand offers adequate rather thanstunning performance.

That said, you can achieve closeto 40 miles per gallon and theoverall driving experience istrademark Audi – surefooted andconfident.

The well crafted five-seater cabinfeatures an adjustable rear bench –cramped for a centre passengerthough – with lots of equipment likeleather upholstery, front, side and

curtain airbags, four electricwindows plus automatic lights andwipers.

And you can expand the load areato 1,560 litres of space as the rearseats fold flat.

Optional extras are both plentifuland expensive, but if you’reprepared to shell out the sort ofmoney it costs to buy a Q5, then itmakes sense to at least include thetechnology pack.

This is the latest evolution ofAudi’s Multi Media Interfaceinfotainment control system whichis no longer reliant on DVD, insteadderiving its info from a hard diskdrive which can also store up to4,000 songs.

This little lot will only presentcustomers with a fiver change from£2000, but it does include the likesof a TV tuner, speech control,Bluetooth telephone, iPodconnection, electric tailgate andparking system.

Best bit though is the satnavset-up that will delight technojunkies. Drive through a major cityand it’s almost like playing a

computer game in the car as mapsappear with textured buildings andlane guidance is shown in 3D formotorway exits.

And for those who want to takeadvantage of the Q5’s off-roadability – which doesn’t cost anyextra – there’s an upratedElectronic Stability Programmeconfigured to maximise tractionand integral ABS that selects the

ideal strategy for sand, gravel orloose rocks.

Combine that with hill descentcontrol plus a roof rack sensor thatcan sense a shift in the centre ofgravity and you have some serioustechnology.

Bit of a waste though when youconsider just two per cent of 4x4owners have ever driven acrossrough country.

Korean carmaker Kia ready to target Fordwith aVenga!A COMPACT crossover designedespecially for Europe will berevealed by Korean car maker Kiaat next month’s Frankfurt MotorShow.

The Venga, which is littlebigger than a Ford Fiesta, is dueto go on sale in Britain earlynext year.

The car is based on Kia’s No 3concept which was shown at theGeneva Motor Show in March.

It will be available with achoice of two 1.4-litre and1.6-litre petrol and dieselengines, generating between 75and 115bhp.

The Venga will be equipped

with a sliding 60/40 split rearseat that also folds flat into thefloor to create a large cargo baywith a twin-level boot floor.

Meanwhile, a high specificationHonda Civic is going on sale nextmonth giving the British-builtmodel sportier looks.

The new Si grade will be

available across the five-doorCivic range featuringcolour-coded bumpers, front foglights, and a Type R-style meshfront grille.
