To up the ante, the basic i20features a 1.2-litre petrolengine capable of averagingmore than 50mpg and comescomplete with airconditioning, central lockingand even a glovebox cooler asstandard.

This is more than awarning shot across the bows.The 1.2-litre i20 is reallyrather good to drive and – ifyou can put up with plenty ofblack plastic in the facia –remarkably cost effective.

It comes with a five yearwarranty, will cost £90 a yearto tax from April and lowmileage versions arepredicted to retain almosthalf their value over threeyears.

Like the Fiesta and Corsa,the i20 has sharp body cuts inits design to add appeal. Aslittle cars go it’s bigger thanaverage and can seat sixfooters front and back while

boot space is adequate at 295litres.

In mid-range Comfort trim,priced from £9,445, the cabinis brightened up with eitherred or blue upholstery panelsin the doors and the car alsocomes with a trip computer,folding and heated doormirrors and iPod connectionsas standard.

For the price it’s highspecification and top valuefor money.

Moreover, the Koreanreputation of being cheap andcheerful is dispelled withgood build quality and a rideon a par with Europeanmodels.

The 1.2 engine isparticularly impressive andtuned to provide power at lowrevs. It develops 77bhp, canmuster a top speed of 103mphbut feels much livelier thanits official 0 to 60 time of 12.9seconds.

Claimed average fueleconomy is 54.5mpg with CO2emissions of 124g/km –

greener than its competitors –and although it is availableonly as a five speed manual,the performance is more thanadequate. Neither does it runout of steam at motorwaycruising speeds.

Safety features include sixairbags and anti-whiplashhead restraints and Hyundaiis confident the i20 willachieve the stringent 2009 fivestar NCAP standard once allmodels are fitted with

electronic stability controlsas of February.

Three door models will beavailable in the Spring pricedfrom £8,195.

While the 1.2-litre Comfortis predicted to be the mostpopular, the i20 range willalso include 1.4-litre petrolversions priced from £,9,495and 1.4 diesels from £9,995.

Although the diesel willcost only £30 a year to tax andis capable of 64mpg, Hyundaireckons it will have limitedappeal to the private buyer.

Performance, even from themore powerful 90bhp dieselversion, is a relativelysluggish 13.6 seconds for the 0to 60 while a lower powered75bhp model will take morethan 16 seconds.

It is the smaller enginedpetrol versions which havemost appeal and with valuefor money paramount at themoment the i20 is a car whichreally will make animpression in the new carmarket.

BEAUTIFUL THINGS...: The new Vauxhall Agila offers a more stylish, ‘greener’ and cheaper ride than its predecessor

VAUXHALL may justhave bagged the best ofboth worlds with its tallbut small model theAgila.

It’s nippy enough to whizzthrough city traffic and fit into thetightest of parking spots, yet hasenough interior space to satisfy theneeds of people who wouldn’tnormally give a second thought tocars of this size.

If the original Agila was a box onwheels, this latest model – whicharrived last summer – is far morestylish, ‘greener’ and cheaper torun.

Its line-up is simple – there arethree models and the same numberof engines, with a streamlined setof options for those wanting extraslike metallic paint, electronicstability control or air-con.

The range kicks off with theAgila 1.0i 12-valve at £7,595 – asmart choice at the price – andincludes an 86PS 1.2-litre 16-valverand, for the first time in this car, a

1.3 CDTi 16v diesel. Trim gradesare Expression, Club and Design.

Certainly there are betterlooking cars – the Renault Modusand more expensive Honda Jazz toname two – vying for the samecustom, but the Agila has much torecommend it.

A high roof line means there’splenty of headroom and a feeling ofspace while room for three in theback is adequate.

The boot looks tiny but in all barentry level cars the rear seats dropto open up a substantial area.There’s also a FlexLoad false floorin the boot for storing stuff like

shopping bags.That’s the functional side, then

there’s the funky bit with Club andDesign models featuring two-toneseats that match the exterior carcolour, a rev counter pod mountedon the dash and fabrics thatincorporate the Agila name.

Okay the fascia and door panelplastics are bit brittle, but theydon’t look cheap and are nicelydesigned anyway.

The tested model was the 1.3diesel, the same unit used sosuccessfully in the Vauxhall Corsa.It’s not too noisy, feels like it offersmore punch than the officialacceleration figure suggests andreturns an excellent average ofalmost 63mpg.

On the down side, this flagshipmodel will set customers back aprincely £11,195 – and that’swithout metallic or pearlescentpaint at £350 and £400 for ESP.

Running costs are low though,the 120g/km of emissions meaningthis model, along with the Agila

1.0i, incurs a vehicle excise dutycharge of a mere £35 a year.

On the whole, this is a rewardinglittle car to drive and one you cometo appreciate more throughfamiliarity. It’s not perfect – thefive-speed manual gearshift isnotchy and the Agila doesn’t fare aswell as lower, heavier cars in

strong winds and rain – but it’svery nimble and has a terrificturning circle.

Every model comes with fourairbags, ABS, electronic ignitionimmobiliser, single slot CD player,tinted glass, internal fuel fillerrelease, Isofix child seat mountingsand an audible ‘lights on’ warning.

Volvogets leanerandabitgreenerAS sales of large

saloon carsplummet, Volvo hasannounced that itsflagship S80 model

is to get a cleaner and leanernew diesel engine option thissummer.

The idea is to give thepremium-sector model thesort of frugal economy andemissions as its smallerfamily models and is theresult of a three-yeardevelopment programme.

This has been made possible

by the use of technologies thatwere not around when thecurrent diesel engine wasdeveloped, such as ceramicglow plugs that heat up to1,000ºC in just two seconds.

This enables the engine tobe started instantly fromtemperatures as low as 30degrees below freezing.

The new S80 D5 will boastaverage economy of 45mpg

with CO2 emissions of164g/km in comparison to thecurrent car’s 169g/km figure.

Power from the new 2.4-litrefive-cylinder unit will be205bhp in comparison to182bhp.

At this stage Volvo is sayingonly that the new engine isdestined for the S80 saloonrange but it is expected to beadopted by every other Volvo

model which come with thecurrent D5 option.

The company says that theexisting diesel engine hasreached the end of itsdevelopment potential, whichis why the three-year projectto create a completely newunit from scratch wasundertaken.

Made entirely ofaluminium, it uses two

turbochargers of differentsizes to generate rapidresponse from start-off andimpressive mid-range pullingpower for strong overtakingonce on the move.

Even in automatic formthe economy gain is morethan 8% at a new high of42mpg, which Volvo saysshould be good enough toearn the S80 the best in classtitle. Prices have still to beannounced but the currentD5 S80 is available from£26,303.

cruiser with positive feelfrom the steering,reasonable handling for itssize and exceptional ridequality thanks to a stiffbodyshell – none of theAmerican wallow here.WHAT’S NOT: Oh dear,the fuel consumptionfigures leave plenty to bedesired – claimed returnfrom the both models isaround 25mpg, I got closerto 18mpg from the 3.6CTS.

Neither model canclaim to be ‘green’ withthe 2.8-litre car emitting263g/km of CO2 and thebigger car a fraction moreat 264g/km.

The styling has

improved and a widertrack certainly gives theCaddy more presence onthe road, but it still lookslike a giant turkey roastingdish.

The speedo is inkilometres per hourrather than mph – a testfor the old mentalarithmetic.

Nearly new cars willmake the best sense asresale values havetraditionally been poorwhile the lack of a dieselengine means runningcosts are high.

Interior space may beadequate but bootcapacity is poor.
