NISSAN is about torewrite the style bookwith the sensationalnew Juke – the funkiestcar of the year.

Looking like a baby version of thetop selling Qashqai, the Juke goeson sale in September priced from£12,795.

Aimed at drivers who want to bedifferent it’s got the likes of theMINI, Fiat 500 and Citroen DS3firmly in its sights.

More importantly, the Juke isbuilt in Britain at Nissan’sSunderland factory where it ishelping to secure more than 4,000jobs.

Not only is the Juke totallydifferent to any other little hatch ithas also got an amazing interior –and like its rivals there arepersonal touches available to makeit even more distinctive.

Inside there are high gloss trimfinishes either in red or grey whilethe bulging centre console creates acockpit feel.

Nissan says this feature wasinspired by a motorcycle fuel tankand the biking theme continues inthe way the instruments areclustered under a cowl behind thesteering wheel.

The Juke is a car that’s almost offthe fun factor scale and it hasdefinite man appeal.

Like the Qashqai its lines arebold and bulbous but emphasised atthe front with large circular lamps,a sporty grille pattern and roundair intakes in the front spoilerwhich Nissan has dubbed the winerack effect.

It’s also available in some brightpaint jobs including startling redand blue finishes. Go the whole hogand there are roof decals, chromedoor mirror caps and body stripesavailable as options.

When it comes to design, the Jukethrows hatchback convention to thewind – and it also delivers on the

road.Handling is nice and sharpand there is a new 1.6-litre

direct injection turbopetrol engine on the top

STAR TURN: The new Nissan Juke is aimed at drivers who want to be different

cranking up the crossover crazewith the Juke, building on the nichecarved out by the larger Qashqai.

With SUV looks but a hatchbackaudience the Qashqai has been ahuge success for Nissan.

The Juke is the new kid on thecrossover block and as well as theturbo version it will also beavailable with a normally aspirated1.6-litre petrol engine and a 1.5-litrediesel.

Most will be front wheel drive buttop specification models will have

the option of four-wheel-drive.The electronic drive system used

on the Juke is more advanced thanthat of the Qashqai.

In general use it comes into playonly when needed but the cleverfeature is that it can move 100 percent of the power across the backaxle as necessary producing a verygrippy and sporty drive.

It is quite ‘quattro-esque’ whenput through its paces andperformance of 0 to 60 in 8.4seconds is not bad either. The front

wheel drive version is even quickerat eight seconds.

Average fuel consumption in theall-wheel-drive Juke is a claimed33.6 mpg while the two wheel drivemodel is slightly more economicalat 35.3. The diesel is the most fuelefficient averaging around 55 mpgwith CO2 emissions of 134g/km andalthough not as quick as the petrolversion it has plenty of mid-rangekick.

CO2 figures for the turbo allwheel drive are 175 g/km, 159 for

the two wheel drive and 147 for thenormal 1.6 engine.

Trim levels will be Nissan’straditional Visia, Acenta and Teknaranges and the 1.6 turbo with fourwheel drive will be the flagship inTekna specification only priced at£19,995, including sat nav.

Diesels cost from £14,195.All models come with air-con,

electric windows and electronicstability controls while Bluetoothand USB connections are standardon Acenta and Tekna versions.

IF there’s one car maker thatreally likes to think big, it’sKia. A peripheral figure littlemore than five years ago, theKorean company is now a

serious player in the premier leagueof motor manufacturers.

Models like the cee’d, Soul,Sorento and Sportage have played ahuge part in the expansion, butfresh to the party is perhaps Kiamost important model yet, theVenga.

The Tardis factor is anexpression that’s been usedliberally to namecheck just aboutevery new vehicle to offer decentinterior space.

In the Venga’s case it’s more aptthan most because this is a car thatdespite being confined to a merefour metres can comfortablyaccommodate a family of five and abootload of clobber.

Nor does it have to resemble anocean-going container to achieve it,

and the principal reason is onePeter Schreyer, the man whodesigned the original Audi TT.

Venga is well and trulySchreyer’s baby. He designed it fromscratch and many of the styleelements from the No 3 concept thatgraced last year’s Geneva Show arein evidence.

While it could be classed as amini-MPV, the latest Kia avoids theboxy look of some otherpassenger-friendly small cars with asleeker, more sporty appeal.

Clever packaging is the key to theinterior where split seats that slide

backwards and forwards by 130mmallow all three rear passengers tostretch their legs out if there’s nottoo much luggage to shift.

But if more luggage space isrequired you can slide the rearseats fully forward, flip the backsdown and you have a completely flatvan-like floor area of almost 1,500litres. Kia calls it Fold & Dive.

Factor in some trendy but simpledesign touches, durable upholsteryand – in the case of top spec models– a two-piece sliding glass sunroofthat covers almost the whole roofarea and you have a small car withthe feelgood factor to match itspracticality.

The Venga, which comes with aseven-year transferable warranty, isavailable with the choice of an89bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine withfive speed manual gearbox, a 124bhp1.6-litre petrol unit mated to afour-speed auto transmission or an89bhp 1.4-litre diesel with six-speed

manual.There are three trim grades –

Venga 1, 2 and 3 – with prices from£11,495 for the 1.4 petrol Venga 1model rising to £15,395 for the tested1.4 CRDi EcoDynamics 3.

I found the diesel noisy butextremely frugal – an average62.8mpg isn’t to be sniffed at – and

the Stop and Go system, wherebythe engine cuts out when you cometo a standstill and sparks back intolife when the clutch is depressed,worked effectively too.

It’s a cracking package and yetanother feather in Kia’s cap – orperhaps that should read warbonnet. Rivals beware.
