But onyear-to-date figuresFord remain topwith Fiesta andFocus ahead ofVauxhall’s Astraand Corsa and theVolkswagen Golf andPolo.
● ASTONMARTIN is to
make the mostpotent productionsports car in themarque’s 96-yearhistory, the V12Vantage, available in
North and SouthAmerica fromlater this year. Basedon the successful V8Vantage, the V12features a 6.0-litreengine producing510 bhp with atop speed of 190mph and a 0-62mphtime of 4.2seconds.

With perfect timing theS-MAX, along with full-blownpeople carrier the Galaxy, hasbeen chosen to herald a raft offresh technologies and newfeatures that take the Fordbrand to a higher level.

More important though isthe dawn of a new era in theAmerican company’s petrolengine development and itcomes in the shape ofsomething called EcoBoost.
S-MAX and Galaxy are thefirst cars to be available withthe high efficiency 2.0-litre203PS EcoBoost petrol engine, alightweight aluminium unitFord believes can lure dieselbuyers thanks to its fueleconomy and performance.
It’s a really sweet engine thatcan propel the S-MAX to 62mphfrom zero in 8.5 seconds,manage a top speed of 137mphand return a Combined cyclefuel figure of 34.8 miles pergallon.
Compared to the 2.3-litrepowertrain it replaces,emissions are down by 19 percent to 189g/km, even thoughEcoBoost has 25 per cent morepunch.
At the same time Ford has
upgraded its diesel line-up, the2.0-litre Duratorq TDCi enginenow available in three powerlevels – 115, 140 and 163PS – forthe first time. With these youcan achieve a fraction short of50mpg economy and CO2 of152g/km.
Also entering the range isFord’s PowerShift doubleclutch transmission, standardwith EcoBoost and an optionon the 140 and 163PS diesels.

JTHE question that facesdrivers of convertibles isfairly simple – hood up, orhood down? For themanufacturers and
designers, the alternatives aresomewhat more complex.
Since the launch of the MercedesSLK, with its retractable metal roof,more than a decade ago opinion hasbeen split on whether it’s best to gorag-top or tin-lid.
Each has its advantages, ofcourse, which is what makes it areal dilemma. The metal roof isheavier, harder to stow but looksprettier and is more secure. Thestrengths of the fabric roof lie in thesteel alternative’s weaknesses.
VW opted for the a folding metalvariety, but with a novel quirkwhich, in many ways, gives it anedge over the opposition. Not onlycan you buzz along with the windthrough your hair and completeopen-air, or be cosseted in a covered
coccoon, but you can also slide backor tilt a glass sunroof that is neatlyfitted into the roof panel.The best ofevery world.
The Eos is Golf-based, and assuch not particularly cheap. Butyou do get just about everythingthat’s best in a medium-sized car.There’s a massive choice of engines– all from the VW Audi ‘sweet shop’ranging from humble 1.4 petrol tomighty 3.0 V6.
At about mid-point in the range isthe 2.0 TDI Sport that I drove.Priced at £23,180, it offerseconomical diesel performance
alongside pretty decentperformance from the 138bhp,2.0-litre engine – a top speed of128mph and acceleration to 62mphin 10.3 seconds.
With upgraded upholstery toVienna leather – a £1,300 extra – theEos feels a very special place to be.The cabin, though recognisablyGolf which means high quality andheavy-duty plastics, has beentweaked to made more sporty andmore individual with leathertrimmed steering wheel and gearlever knob.
Though not a full four-seater forlong distances, it’s more than a 2+2and there’s sufficient headroom inthe rear for a near-six-footer. Theglass sunroof helps make occupantsfeel less claustrophobic – as well asgive you a blast of fresh air. Bootspace with the roof up is a seriouslygenerous 380 litres and even with itfolded it amounts to an acceptable205 litres.
Like the Golf, the Eos is one ofthe best behaved front drive carsaround. Steering is light butinformative and the handling canbe fun and intuitive if you push on.As a Sunday runabout, with roofdown, it’s a doddle to drive andyou’ll be returning around 50mpg.
Open-air motoring is largely freeof buffeting for those in the front – Ididn’t even need to use the optionalwind deflector which fits across therear seats. If you are carrying rear
seat passengers, it gets a bit blowyfor them, though.
As well as the usual crashprotection from airbags and headrestraints designed to reducewhiplash, the Eos is fitted withactive rolloverbars behind the rearseats which activate via sensors atthe slightest hint of impact or roll.
With an unusual blend of goodlooks, practicality and innovationthe Eos stands out as anall-the-year-round convertible.

That’s the view of industryanalyst Glass’s who say thatwhile models like the RangeRover, Mercedes S-Class and
Bentley Continental GT may beamong the thirstiest vehiclesaround, they haven’t suffered anyadverse reaction from buyers.
British motorists paid athen-record 120p per litre forunleaded petrol in July 2008, andthe current pump price is nowexceeding that figure.
However, unlike in 2008, thistime around there have not beenany notable repercussions for theupper echelons of the used carmarket.
While the value of a typicalfamily car has risen by at leasttwo per cent since January, large4x4s have registered a rise of
twice that amount. Also faringwell during this period areluxury cars and supercars.
“Given the series of fuel priceincreases, it is perhaps surprisingthat there has not been any kindof backlash in the premiumsectors this time around,” saysGlass’s chief Adrian Rushmore.
