AMERE five years agosomeone at GeneralMotors had a spark ofinspiration. In thedepths of the Asian

economic crisis, the American gianthad baled out Korean makerDaewoo.

Problem was, it had sunk moneyinto a brand that arguably rankedlower in popularity than Jedward.

Cheap, certainly; cheerful,maybe; but when it came to qualityand desirability, Daewoo had takenover Skoda’s mantle as the makeeveryone loved to hate.

Quality and perception issues canbe solved over a period of time – asSkoda has proved – but a quick fixwas needed.

And some bright spark in GM’smarketing department came upwith the answer – just dumpDaewoo and give the brand a namethe world recognises. That namewas Chevrolet – an American iconwith a glorious heritage.

Since the name change, GM hasbeen working hard to improve thequality and desirability of theKorean products and the results canbe seen with every new Chevroletthat comes along.

And next spring thetransformation will be completewhen the appropriately namedChevrolet Spark hits our streets.

A replacement for the Matiz citycar, it is far removed from itspredecessor in everything but price,with the entry level model costingjust £6,945 – a higher base-line, butactually cheaper than the current1.0-litre Matiz.

Styling is hip-hop generation, theinterior funky and spacious andbuild quality and driveabilityrepresent a quantum leap forward.

Front end design provides afamily link with the biggerChevrolet Cruze, but the Spark hasa character all of its own and, witha range of bright, trendy colours, it

will certainly stand out on thestreets. The edgy design

VITAL SPARK: The new small Chevy is a replacement for the Matiz city car

analogue speedo, digitalrev-counter, fuel gauge and, onhigher spec models, trip computerinfo. It’s clear and easy to read and,at night, it’s backlit by sexy, ice-bluelighting.

Fit, finish and trim materials aretop notch and a vast improvementon the old Matiz and, in all but theentry level model, there are neatdetailing touches around the cabinin a variety of materials dependingon trim level, including satin finish

steel, piano black or high-gloss redand carbon fibre effects.

Basic trim level is, well, basic,but £8,145 will buy you the Spark+which offers air con, powered frontwindows and central locking.

Next up is the LS, from £8,445,which comes with bigger wheels,remote central locking, a sunglassesholder and enhanced cosmeticdetails.

Topping the range is the £9,845Spark LT which has bigger, 15 inch,

alloys, climate control and exteriorbody kit and six speaker stereo.

So far so good, but the real bonusis the Tardis-like interior space.

The Spark is longer, wider andhigher than the Matiz, but notmassively so and the space insidecomes as a real surprise. Even withthe front seats well back, there’splenty of legroom in the rear.

Access is good through the reardoors but it's a relatively narrowcar and Chevrolet’s claim that this

is a full five-seater is stretching it alittle.

The Spark will come with achoice of 1.0 and 1.2 litre petrolengines. The smaller of the twoneeds to be worked hard initiallybut has a surprisingly wide fifthgear, with good pull available fromaround 30mph upwards.

The 1.2 has much more initialurge – better for the quick responseso often required in busy citytraffic.

Working with the AA, Ford's roadside assistance partner,Peoples has outlined key ways to address potentialhazards.

“Young drivers are more at risk of getting intoprecarious situations,” said Frank Caren PeoplesAftersales Manager. “Pressures on young people'sfinances can mean skimping on essential servicing, careand maintenance. This can be dangerous, especially astheir vehicles are likely to be older.”

Peoples highlight the need for owners of older vehiclesto maintain service schedules as they would with a brandnew car.

“We are aware that people run their cars to a budget andin the current climate that budget may have beentrimmed,” said Frank Caren. “Peoples offer free tyreinspections to our customers - and Ford has introducedits £99 Value Service for vehicles over three years old tohelp ensure that customers don't ‘slip the net’ and drivecars not fit for purpose.

“For just £99 cars receive a value service and inspectionof all consumable items such as wiper blades, wiring,hoses and exhausts. It extends to the transmission, brakesand running gear and even includes details such asdashboard illumination.

Included in Ford's £99 Value Service is up to one year of

European Roadside Assistance cover. This is availableuntil the end of 2009 and customers receive the roadsideassistance cover for either 12 months or until their nextservice (whichever occurs first).”

For National Road Safety Week, the AA researched itsprincipal area of concern - tyres. “The one componentconnecting the car to the road are its tyres and 45 percent of UK motorists donít know the minimum legaltread depth for tyres - which is a total of nearly 17million people,” said Andrew Howard, the AA’s head ofroad safety.

“To drive safely, you need the right tyres in goodcondition, as they affect the steering, braking andacceleration of your vehicle - particularly at this time ofyear. On a wet road, worn tyres could mean needing upto 70 per cent more braking distance.”

Latest figures show that 2 per cent of all fatal accidentswere caused by illegal, defective or under-inflated tyres,which has brought about a crackdown on ensuring thattyres are compliant with the law.

“It is a legal requirement to ensure that the tread onyour tyres has not worn below 1.6mm, that there is nomixing of radial or cross-ply tyres and that tyres arecorrectly inflated without any structural damage,” saidAndrew Howard. “Any one of these faults not onlyendangers the driver, passengers and other road users,but can also incur substantial fines and points on yourlicence -all more reasons to check your tyres regularly.”
