CAR giant Ford has its ownanswer to the economiccrisis – it is offeringcash-strapped motorists anew superbabe.

Hot on the heels of the latestFiesta, due in showrooms nextmonth, comes the next generationof city slicker the Ka, and it’s acracker.

Fresh, fun and definitely funky,the new baby is packed with bigcar characteristics.

Since its launch in 1996, the Kahas topped the 1.4 million salesfigure, its owners proving the mostloyal and satisfied of any withinthe Ford family.

They are going to be knocked outby this model, which will cost from£7,995 early in the New Year.

Make no mistake – it needs to bethe best. For instance, the originalKa had eight competitors atlaunch, now the opposition hasrisen to 20 and counting.

True to form though, Ford hasdelivered in style. Rather than headdown the retro road, the designteam followed the ‘kinetic’ routetaken by stablemate the Fiesta.

And if the exterior, with itscheeky face and chunkyproportions looks eyecatching, theinside is a revelation, with itstwo-tone seat colours, tactile

materials and biker-style centreconsole with dash-mountedgearshift.

There’s also a surprising amountof interior space for a vehicle ofthis size and plenty of stowagespace too, including a gloveboxthat’s more like a small cave.

But it’s the scope forpersonalising each individual carthat really appeals. OK, you have toshell out some extra lolly – £800 inthe case of the Grand Prix andDigital Art packs and £1,200 for theleather Tattoo theme – but it’s well

worth it because the result issensational.

As an example, the Grand Prixoption has a chequered flag decalbased on a red or white exteriorcolour with patterned body stripes,red and white seats, whiteheadrests, red door panels and redleather trim on the steering wheel.

Two engines are available – a1.2-litre 69PS Duratec petrol unitand, for the first time in the Ka, a1.3-litre 75PS TDCi diesel – andthere are four trim grades, Studio,Style, Style + and Zetec.

On the downside, this modeldoesn’t come with remote centrallocking or electric windows.

Realistically, most owners wouldat least want the Style trim (anadditional £500) and Ford believesthe top spec Zetec will prove thebest seller. That means a tab of£9,495 for the 1.2 model and a hefty£10,195 for the diesel.

The Ka doesn’t have a vastamount of punch but is first classto drive. It is built with small carexperts Fiat – the Ka is producedalongside the Fiat 500 in Poland –but feels dynamically superior tothat model.

Without doubt the Ka has growninto a stylish, vibrant and moremature city car. It’s going to proveanother winner for Ford.

THE estate car of choice foreveryone, from the greenwellie brigade and antiquedealers to families needingto shift substantial loads

with a degree of refinement, hasfound itself under increasingpressure in recent years.

But rather than fold against thethreat from SUVs and lifestylevehicles, the Volvo brand hasbucked the trend and enjoyed anupsurge in demand.

Jewel in the Swedishmanufacturer’s crown is the V70,so, for the latest generation models,Volvo’s design team called upon themarque’s time-honoured customersto establish the most importantareas for improvement.

No surprise then that luxury,style, improved dynamics and moreversatile load-lugging were close tothe top of the list.

With entry to the V70 experiencestarting at £24,995 for the 2.0 SEand topping out at £38,885 for theT6 AWD SE Lux Geartronic, pricesaren’t exactly on the cheap side.

That said, the V70 is everythingyou could wish for in a premiumestate. Whereas the previousline-up was based on the S60 but

with a longer wheelbase, the freshmodels are based on the larger S80.

Sleeker and more athletic thanbefore with blacked-out side pillarsand C30-inspired tail lights, the bigSwede certainly has style as well asbeing a load-lugger par excellence.

Even laden to the gills, the V70 issmooth to drive with a balancedfeel from the steering, thoughthere’s noticeable understeer andthe six-speed manual gearshift onthe test model felt loose.

Otherwise, the news is all good,right down to the 42 miles pergallon economy. So refined is thenear silent 2.4-litre diesel enginethat you find yourself doublechecking the inside of the filler cap

before committing to the blackpump.

The interior space you expectfrom a big Volvo has actually beenincreased to allow more leg, kneeand shoulder room and the loadarea has gained some usefultouches, such as aluminium railsand movable anchorage points.

While safety remains a priority,features such as lane changetechnology are not exactly flawless.

The idea is that if the car shoulddrift across the white line intoanother lane without the driverindicating, then a row of redwarning lights show on thewindscreen’s head-up displayaccompanied by a loud screeching.

Problem is that driving througha built-up area, with cars parked onboth sides of the road, the system ison and off by the minute.

More predictable in its operationis the pair of dual-stage integratedchild booster seats that quicklyadjust through two positions.

Fresh, clean and typicallyScandinavian through its effectivecabin design and comfortableseating, the V70 offers a rewardingdrive with stable roadholding – it’sstill top of the estate class.
