Ibizacleaningupwith tinyenginesLITTLE engines keep

getting better as SEATis about to prove withthe latest versions ofthe Ibiza supermini.

Two new 1.2-litre enginesare coming on stream – andone is cleaner than many ahybrid.

The other is eco friendlytoo, but punches above itsweight when it comes toperformance.

Not so long ago the newIbiza 1.2 TSI would have beenhailed as a hot hatch with itssub-10 second 0 to 60acceleration.

Such have been theadvances in engine technologythat this relatively smallengine now performs whileaveraging more than 55 milesto the gallon with CO2emissions of 119g/km.

As such this Ibiza escapesvehicle duty in its first yearand costs £35 a year to taxthereafter.

Priced from £12,750 theturbocharged Ibiza TSI hasstop/start and brake energyregeneration systems to boosteconomy while still being fun

to drive.It is available either with a

five speed manual gearbox ora seven speed semi-automaticDSG system which at £450extra is a steal.

While the SG set up is notquite as economical – itshaves about two miles pergallon from the average figure– it makes the car easy todrive in town and gets the bestfrom the engine when drivenenthusiastically.

To put the technology intoperspective the new 1.2-litreengine develops 105bhp whichis the same as the previous1.6-litre engine used in theIbiza but 20 per cent moreefficient.

SEAT is badging the newTSI cars as Ecomotive modelsbecause of the energy savingdevices fitted – but going onestage further comes anEcomotive E model whichslashes emissions evenfurther.

Fitted with additionalaerodynamics and low rolling

resistance tyres the Ibiza 1.2 Euses a three cylinder dieselengine which gives incredibleaverage fuel consumption of80.7mpg and emissions of just92g/km – lower than Toyota’sAuris hybrid.

Despite its greencredentials the IbizaEcomotive E is fairly sporty –0 to 60 takes 14.6 seconds and

the top speed is 104mph – andthe sound from the threecylinder engine gives it quitea character.

It’s priced from £14,910 andbeing under 100g/km escapesroad tax completely forprivate motorists and fallsinto the lowest 13 per centbracket for business users.

As well as the new 1.2-litre

engines the Spanish carmaker is also introducing new2.0-litre common rail dieselsin the larger Leon hatchbackand the Altea compact MPV.

Prices for the new dieselstart at £18,750 in the Leonwith the 140bhp enginedelivering a 0 to 60 time of 9.5seconds, a claimed top speedof 127mph while average fuelconsumption is 58.9mpg witha CO2 figure of 125g/km.

The Altea diesel is alsosub-130g/km but not quite aseconomical at 57.6 to thegallon.

In both cars there is plentyof mid-range pull and asdiesels go they are pleasantlyquiet inside.

The new models will hit thestreets in December bolsteringthe SEAT range which iscurrently setting newstandards for the brand inBritain.

So far this year more than28,000 new SEATs have beenregistered in the UK – a 12 percent increase year on yearwhich gives theBarcelona-based company a1.6 per cent market share.

The only two examples of the newmodel currently in the country willgo on view at a special launch eventfor Peoples Ford on Speke HallRoad, Speke, beginning next week.

Camaromuscles in ondrop-topmarketAMERICAN icon Chevrolet isdropping the top on one of itsmost famous models – and it willbe on sale in the UK next year.

The company has lifted the lidon the new Camaro Convertibleat the Los Angeles auto show,and fans of the muscle car are infor a treat.

It will be available in a similarmodel range to the Camarocoupe, which means UK buyers

can expect a whopping 6.2-litreV8 engine producing 426bhp.

SOMETIMES there are verysimple reasons why a carcan prove a smash hit inone place yet have all theimpact of a powder puff in

another.The Mazda CX-7 sports crossover

is a case in point – they loved it inthe States, steered well clear here.

And the reason was down to thepowerplant, a 2.3-litre petrol engineonly capable of returning around 23miles to the gallon on a good day.

So the Japanese company tookthe sensible course, did away withthe gas guzzler and came up with acracking diesel unit that’s gone afair distance to giving the CX-7 thesort of patronage it deserves.

Fair, because an official averagefigure of 37.7mpg isn’t exactly goingto challenge economy records. Thatsaid, this car is about far more thanperformance numbers.

There’s just one model calledSport Tech Diesel and it comes

dressed in as sharp a suit of clothesas you will find in any premium‘soft roader’.

It really looks the part for onething - blown-up wheel arches, largeair scoops, rear spoiler and a gapingfront grille.

And while the CX-7 boastsfour-wheel drive, off-road ability isnot the priority. As a result the car'sActive Torque system - whichautomatically shifts power betweenthe front and rear axles - is set up toimprove tarmac handling.

It does it seamlessly too. Ladenwith four kids’ worth of weekend

clobber the Mazda felt very agile,stable at speed, positive throughfast bends and provided a greatsense of control from behind thewheel.

In fact the only criticism was asix-speed manual gearbox that felt abit clunky at times.

Inside, the CX-7 offers terrificspace, including in the rear wherethree adults can travel a longdistance in comfort – something asurprising number of similarmodels can’t manage.

The CX-7 is a striking looker bothinside and out, decent rear spacemeaning three can travelcomfortably for a long distance inthe back.

Load carrying capacity is alsooutstanding and there's the optionof increasing the area considerablythanks to Mazda's 'Karakuri'arrangement which drops the rearseats to form a flat floor at the flickof a lever.

Just the one trim grade providesleather seats, air-con, cruisecontrol, electric windows, poweredand heated front seats plus a BOSEpremium sound system with six-CDautochanger as standard.

There's also integrated sat-navand Bluetooth while metallic paintat £450 is one of very few extra costoptions.

Add that imposing road presence,high driving position, sportydynamics and safety technologieslike the Emergency Stop Signalling,which activates the hazard warninglights under heavy braking, andRear Vehicle Monitoring system -an aid to safe lane-changing - theCX-7 is definitely a car with bags ofappeal.

Land Rover freezes VAT forwinterLAND ROVER has launched aprice initiative aimed atprotecting customers from theVAT increase in January.

The company made itsannouncement as prices wereunveiled for the 2011 modelrange, including the Freelander2with its new two-wheel drive

starts at £21,995 for the 2.2-litresix-speed manual car in entrylevel S trim, while four-wheeldrive models cost an additional£750.

But buyers can avoid theadditional VAT by placing orders
