REMEMBER theiconic Alfa Sud, themodel that set newstandards in smallcar design and

dynamics in the 1970s and80s?

Well, Italian manufacturerAlfa Romeo is aiming tocreate a new generation of‘Alfistas’ with its first sportycompact model since thoseheady days.

It’s called the MiTo – acombination of Milano, wherethe car was designed, andTorino, where it is built – andcomes packed with style,technology and feelgoodfactor.

A starting price of £10,745has convinced the companythat a healthy sale is there forthe taking, specially as thebuild and depreciation issuesthat have cost Alfa so dearlyin the past have apparentlybeen resolved.

From this week’s launchthere will be three high-spec

variants in the Turismo,Lusso and Veloce trim with achoice of three petrol enginesand two JTDm diesels.

Entry to the MiTo comesvia the 95bhp 1.4-litre petrolTurismo, with the tab risingto £14,464 for the 1.6 JTDmVeloce diesel, though Alfaexpect the top seller to be the120bhp turbocharged petrolmodel in mid-range Lussospec at £12,702.

Alfa aims to attract ayounger audience and haspumped a major degree of itsbudget into improvingcustomer service.

Combined withclass-leading residual valuespredicted by market analystsCAP monitor, insuranceratings that start at groupthree and an attractive PCPrate of below £200 a month,the Italians’ confidence in the

MiTo is understandable.It is inspired by the Alfa 8C

Competizione, is onlyavailable as a three-doorhatchback, and brings a newdimension to its class withthe company’s innovativeDNA system.

This set-up was first usedby the Ferrari Grand Prixteam before being extended toits road cars and now,exclusively, to MiTo.

A three-position switchbeside the gear lever altersthe throttle response,suspension and steering fordifferent drivingenvironments – Dynamic,Normal and All Weather.

And it works a treat. Whilethe regular mode provides anengaging drive, flicking thesetting to Dynamictransforms the car fromsporty hatch to something farmore rally-bred with sharpersteering, more direct handlingand quicker throttle response.

All Weather only works up

to about 40mph and isspecifically for icy or loosesurfaces.

MiTo really looks the partwith bags of road presenceand a hi-tech driver-focusedcabin – the dash has a silky,carbon fibre finish, the dialsare hooded and seatsbody-hugging.

It’s also well soundproofedand safe, seven airbagsstandard on every versionalong with anti-lock brakes,traction control features and ahill holder function.

There’s ample room upfront and sufficient rear spacefor two six-footers, though theboot isn’t specially large.

The models available on thelaunch exercise were the mostpowerful versions. The 120bhp1.6-litre diesel proves best inthe mid-range where there’splenty of torque yet thepotential for almost 59 milesper gallon economy.

The 155bhp 1.4 Turbopetrolis a serious performer,

capable of reaching 62mph in8.0 seconds and a top speed of134mph.

There’s a comprehensivelist of standard spec, such asair-con, electric one-touchwindows, remote centrallocking, Follow-Me-Homeheadlights and CD soundsystem with MP3 readerincluded with every car.

Chrome exhaust pipes,sport alloy wheels, fog lights,leather steering wheel andremote audio controls comewith Lusso trim, while Velocehas 17-inch wheels, red brakecalipers, rear spoiler andBlue&Me hands-free systemwith voice recognition.

Factor in the 10 racy colourchoices, some funky faciacombinations, tastefulbodywork decals plus thatstarting price, and Alfa has agenuine contender in itsstable.

Time for the likes of MINIto sweat – because Alfa Romeois about to crank up the heat.

But it presents little problem tothe latest generationMercedes-Benz A-Class, or at leastto those prepared to splash out anextra £550 for a feature they callActive Park Assist.

The engine range now comprisesA 150 (1.5-litre) and A 170 (1.7-litre)petrol units plus A 160 CDI(2.0-litre) and the tested A 180 CDI(also 2.0-litre but 109 as opposed to82bhp) common rail turbodiesels.

And a Blue Efficiency package,which lowers both fuelconsumption and CO2 emissions, is

now available along with an ECOstart-stop function which reducesurban fuel consumption by up tonine per cent.

As you would expect from aMercedes, the A-Class is a pleasant,enjoyable car to drive withreasonable interior space – on thedownside the diesel engine is noisy.

SOME months ago, beforethe damaging effects of thecredit crunch really startedto bite, we visited oneBritain’s most successful

car plants – Vauxhall at EllesmerePort – to witness the productionprocess at first hand.

The Wirral factory is home to thepopular Astra model and not onlydid we see how a modern, hi-techoperation works, we ended upbuilding our own car and taking iton test.

Here’s the final part of thespotlight on our ‘star silver’ AstraSRi 1.9 turbodiesel hatchback.● WHEN things sound too good tobe true, you generally findssomeone’s been economical with thetruth or has conveniently forgottento tell you the complete story.

Well here’s something that’sabsolute gospel – no fibs, nomemory lapses.

The Vauxhall Astra 1.9 SRiturbodiesel we have had onlong-term test has completed 8,100miles without so much as amis-tuned radio station.

The car has proved a reliable,rock solid workhorse, with theemphasis on the word work becausethis vehicle has really had to earnits corn.

It has been loaded with thecontents of a student flat, coveredthe length and breadth of Britainand – I am ashamed to admit it –avoided the filling station until itwas virtually running on vapour.

At no time has the car faltered –and some folk wonder why whenasked to recommend wheels that are“not too small, but not too bigeither” I so often recommend aVauxhall Astra or Ford Focus.

What has impressed most aboutthe Astra is its all-round ability. It’sa good looking car without being areal head-turner, is comfy andenjoyable to drive and has aninterior that’s sufficiently durable

to withstand heavy handed – andfooted – kids.

So despite various forms ofspillage there’s been nothing adamp sponge hasn’t solved and noresidual stains.

One or two class rivals havebetter designed luggage areas, butto gripe about boot space would beunfair because kit bags, suitcases oran extensive supermarket shop havenever caused a problem.

And while it may be a squeeze forthree adults across the rear, the kidshave never complained about lackof space or discomfort.

But the star of this particularVauxhall has been the turbodieselengine. Okay, there’s been a hint of

clatter at start-up and the odd puffof smoke.

This unit is thehigher powered ofthe two 1.9 CDTiunits available inthe Astra – and it’simmensely capable.

With 150PS ofpunch on tap it canreally pick up itsfeet, offeringseriousperformance withreasonable fuel economy – anofficial 50mpg though I got closer to45 on long trips.

It is a composed and simple car todrive but also rewarding because

SRi spec includes loweredsuspension and faster steering.

A top 5-starEuro NCAPcrash testrating says itall about thecar’s safety,and there arealso sixairbags,anti-lockbrakes,immobiliser,

alarmand remote central locking.

The car’s departure begs thequestion: Would I buy one myself ?That question answers itself.
