ITALIAN giant Fiat holds thedistinction of being the car makerwith the greenest credentials inEurope. And with the launch ofits new Punto Evo the company is

raising the stakes – in terms of bothcleanliness and quality.

Acutely conscious of the fact thatincreasing numbers of people aredownsizing to more environmentally-friendly, cheaper to run and easier topark models, Fiat has replaced atop-notch performer with an evenbetter one.

So out goes the Grande Punto –currently Europe’s fifth best seller – tomake way for Punto Evo, a car withthe potential to prove an even biggersuccess.

Not only does the new arrival lookthe part, it also comes with a raft offresh innovations and safety features.

Inside, the cabin looks and feelsclassy even in the most basic Activetrim, while the piano black panelsurrounding the sound system addsan upmarket touch. The seats are alsocomfortable and the two-tone plasticssoft rather than brittle.

Every model in the 22-strong line-upis fitted with Fiat’s Blue&Me interfacethat controls all the car’s majorfunctions. However, it’s well worth theextra £275 to add the slick newBlue&Me Tom Tom.

This means fingertip access to atouchscreen navigation set-up, mobilephone, trip computer and MP3 playerwith steering wheel commands.

It is compact, links to the car via adiscreet connector on the dash and

being portable it can be used in anyother vehicle. It also includessomething called eco:Drive, wherebyowners receive info on how to reducethe environmental impact of theirdriving style.

The Punto Evo’s trump card thoughis located beneath the bonnet in theshape of two new engine ranges – theMultiAir petrol family and MultiJet IIdiesels.

All five powerplants in the line-upconform to Euro 5 emissions rules andhave fuel-saving Start&Stoptechnology as standard, theoil-burners boasting such low CO2that car tax is £35 a year.

MultiAir, which will eventually berolled out across the whole Fiat stable,works by optimising air intake overthe car’s entire rev range. The upshotis a reduction in fuel consumption,lowering of emissions and boosting ofpower – all by an average 10 per cent.

Two 1.4-litre MultiAir engines areavailable from launch, one producing105bhp, the other a turbo-charged135bhp, and there are also the familiarFiat trim grades of Active, Dynamic,GP, Eleganza and Sporting.

The 1.3-litre MultiJet II – availablewith 75 or 95bhp – is a development ofthe proven diesel engine already usedby the company and, like the petrolunit, is also more efficient. It will bejoined by a 1.6-litre 120bhp model inOctober.

Entry to the Evo experience is the8-valve 1.4 Active 77bhp three-door

model at £10,995, the only petrolengine not to feature MultiAirtechnology. Range topper is the 135bhpmodel in (three-door only) Sportingtrim.

Nonetheless it’s an engaging car todrive, well balanced and capable ofreturning just under 50 miles pergallon, though it struggles a bit uphill.Fiat expects this car and the 105bhpMultiAir to prove the biggest sellers.

The latter, which costs £14,095 as afive-door in sporty GP trim and has asix-speed manual gearbox, provedterrific fun to drive around thepicturesque Forest Of Dean.

Give the car a few revs and itresponds with a lovely peppy enginenote and fair degree of punch, thoughit came up short of the claimedaverage fuel figure of 49.6mpg.

The ride was also firm, though GPand Sporting versions feature a Sportchassis while the rest have a Comfortset-up.

Regards the Start&Stop, I havedriven cars that respond moreinstantly, though the Evo’s systemworks well enough to avoid thatfeeling that you’ve stalled the engine.

Safety spec includes a driver’s kneeairbag, ABS and hill holder. Electricmirrors and front windows, adjustablesteering wheel and ‘follow me home’lighting are also included on everycar.

Spirito Di Punto may have been thethrust of a past generation of this car,now Fiat is urging fans of the marqueto ‘Drive the Evolution’ – the Evocertainly has what it takes to succeed.

to criticise 4x4 drivers butare the first to wish theyowned one when weatherlike we’ve seen in recent

weeks descends on the country.Big, belching gas guzzlers one

minute; sensible, safe, all-weathertransport the next.

Well I don’t propose to launchinto a pro off-roader rant, but mostcar manufacturers are getting‘greener’ by the minute. And nonemore so than Land Rover.

The company has a long-termcommitment to what it callse-terrain technologies and first outof the blocks is the Liverpool-builtFreelander 2.

Every TD4 diesel now features anintelligent Stop/Start system - withfuel consumption savings of around4.5 miles per gallon and a 15g/kmreduction in CO2 emissions - as anintegral part of the car.

In fact the only modification is anenhanced starter motor to copewith a three-fold leap in the number

of ignitions.Its operation is very

straightforward. Stop the car atlights or in traffic and the enginecuts out when neutral is engaged.Depress the clutch and thepowerplant kicks back into life.

A simple of case of no powerequals no emissions or pollution,but with the benefit of savings ondiesel.

An understandable concern withsome drivers is one of: “What if itdoesn’t work?” The answer is itworks every time, seamlessly, theonly slightly disconcerting factorbeing the silence in the cabin.

And among the aids to morefuel-efficient motoring on the TD4-eis a dashboard light to indicate theoptimum moment for changinggear.

Otherwise, kit like terrainresponse - standard on all bar entrylevel models - which adapts theFreelander’s engine, gearbox,centre coupling and chassis tomatch the demands of theconditions, makes the Land Roverstand out as a 4x4 of immensecapability.

There are four terrain responsesettings which the driver can selectvia a rotary control in front of thegear lever, one of them being theGrass/Gravel/Snow mode whichcame in so useful when I needed tovisit a snow-bound farm beforeswitching the dial to Mud and Rutsto get back out again.

In everyday conditions theFreelander is a very agreeable carto drive - pleasantly agile, smoothon the motorway and showing littlein the way of body roll on twisting

roads, while engine noise is alsowell suppressed.

Inside there’s a heavy duty,durable feel to the instruments andseating, ample head and legroomfor five, a commanding view of theroad and a useful 755 litres of bootspace.

This flagship car, which costs£32,595 as opposed to the entry

grade S model at £21,295, comesextensively kitted out with the likesof a six-way electric driver’s seatmechanism, premium 14-speakersound system, dual zone air con andsatellite navigation, though it’s stillpossible to spend even more onadd-ons like adaptive Bi-Xenonheadlamps at £995 or just somecarpet mats at £75.

Hyundai confident of success in the scrap for customersHYUNDAI is confident ofattracting a raft of new customerscourtesy of two schemes theybelieve will change the way carsare bought in Britain forever.

One is called Trade & Upgradeand allows buyers the same£2,000 part exchange allowanceas scrappage customers - even

after the government schemeends.

The second plan, dubbedHappy Returns, offers existingscrappage customers the chanceto swop to a new ‘10’registration in March for as littleas £499.

“We have learnt some

valuable lessons from the 33,000people who have bought carsfrom us under the scrappagescheme” said Tony Whitehorn,Hyundai’s UK managing director.

“They love transparentpricing. They hate haggling. Andif they see a good deal they willsnap it up. What we are offering

post scrappage will build on thisexperience and will change theway cars are bought in the UKfor ever.”

Trade & Upgrade will offer the6.4 million owners of seven to10-year-old cars in Britain thesame £2,000 allowance offeredto scrappage customers.
