THE Blue Oval is rolling intoa new era – and the smartmoney is on a freshgeneration of fans turningon to the brand.

We have already seen the arrivalof upgraded large Fords thissummer in the shape of the S-MAXand Galaxy people carriers, autumnheralds the latest Mondeo andC-MAX models and next springthere will be a new Focus.

And hot on the heels of Fordtrimming the prices of its biggercars by 10-12 per cent – madepossible through an offsettingreduction in dealer margin andshowroom discounts dubbed ‘BlueTag pricing – the company is alsocommitted to cutting the cost of itssmall and medium cars from nextmonth.

First though comes a move thatcould see the stylish Kuga SUVimprove significantly on the 20,000vehicles sold in the UK since its2008 launch.

It’s down to a pair of powertrainoptions designed to boostperformance, improve fuel economyand reduce CO2 emissions.

The engines comprise a new163PS version of the proven 2.0-litreTDCi diesel unit along with a 140PSoil-burner, up from 136PS.

Front-wheel drive Kuga modelsfitted with the 140PS powerplantkeep the emissions down to156g/km, while the 140PS and 163PSall-wheel drive cars with manualtransmission deliver 159g/km, a sixper cent reduction compared to theoutgoing 136PS engine.

Also new to Kuga AWD models isFord’s PowerShift six-speed doubleclutch transmission, which can beoperated either as a traditionalautomatic or by using manual shiftswith the gear lever. Its extraefficiency means a CO2 figure of179g/km.

To my mind the Kuga is thesmartest dressed model in theoff-road arena and, provided seriousmud-plugging isn’t your priority, ittakes some beating in what’sbecome a viciously competitivesection of the market.

I drove the more powerful 163PS

version with PowerShift onchallenging roads that also took in afairly mild off-road detour.

It’s quite a tall car but beingderived from one of the finesthandling vehicles around, theFocus, the Kuga’s dynamics are firstrate – ensuring a supple ride, lots ofagility and absence of roll throughbends.

Another strong selling point isinterior quality and design. Thecabin is sensibly laid out intrademark Ford fashion while therake and reach adjustable steeringensures you can sit comfortably in abright, airy environment.

And the arrival of a new Ford‘Individual’ package available onthe most popular Titanium series

models means the Kuga can bedressed to impress with the likes ofa unique front grille, 19-inch alloys,roof rails, high gloss black trim andprivacy glass.

Retained in the new line-up is the200PS 2.5-litre petrol model andprices (from August 2) range from£20,495 for the 2WD Kuga 140PSTDCi manual to £26,995 for the

flagship 2.5T Titanium AWDautomatic.

Ford has also revamped theMondeo hatchback and estate aheadof the autumn arrival of acompletely new model by adding aturbocharged 2.0-litre EcoBoostpetrol engine with PowerShift asstandard, with prices beginning at£22,095.

The offer came courtesy ofFord, with a drive up thefamous hill at the GoodwoodFestival of Speed behind thewheel of the Blue Oval’sfire-breathing Focus RS500.

It was all part of theinaugural Moving MotorShow, a one-day extension tothe festival and designed to

re-invent the British MotorShow with a dedicatedmanufacturer day.

In company with exoticalike the Ferrari California,Chevrolet Camaro, RollsRoyce Phantom and Audi R8Spyder, I took on the hillclimb before completing anear four-mile route back tothe exhibition area.

And the response willcome as no surprise toperformance Ford fans – the101 Brits lucky enough to laytheir hands on one of theselimited edition cars havebagged themselves a belter.

Clamour for the vehicleswas such that the UKallocation was sold out withina week and was five timesoversubscribed.

The RS500 – the numberbeing built for distributionacross 20 European countries– joins a long line of RS Fordslike the legendary SierraRS500 Cosworth.

The RS500 sees the 305PSturbocharged 2.5-litre enginefrom the standard Focus RSupgraded to deliversignificantly more top-endand mid-range power, butwithout compromising the

base engine’s strength andresponse at lower revs.

Peak power is increased by45PS to 350PS at 6,000rpm,while torque has risen from440 to 460Nm.

All cars are painted in aPanther Black matt metalliccolour and customers havethe option of specifyingWRC-style white wheels foran extra £500.

The RS500 costs £35,450and each car will carry ametal plaque on the centreconsole, engraved with aunique ID number from 001to 500.
