REVO-KNUCKLE maysound like the name of anew indie rock band, butits value is in the way itdeals with heavy metal.

In reality it is an innovativesuspension system that reduces thetorque steer on Ford’s long-awaitedmean machine the Focus RS. Andbelieve me, it’s very welcome.

Lovers of fast Fords have had towait seven years for the latest RS,which is inspired by the world rallyFocus.

The previous model was afantastic car but its performancewas blighted by torque steer, whichoccurs during hard accelerationwhen torque on the driven wheelsexceeds grips levels.

Floor the throttle from standstilland the car would weave aroundlike Bambi on ice.

There’s still a hint of it on thenew model, but the Revo minimizesit significantly on what is now aperformer with no equal outside ofthe mega money supercar bracket.

At £26,395 the RS is an absolutesteal – so you need to keep it lockedup. Rivals like the Mitsubishi Evo Xcost at least three grand more whileSubaru’s Impreza WRX lags waybehind in the power stakes.

The RS uses the same 2.5-litreturbocharged engine that’s underthe bonnet of the fiery Focus ST, yetthe output has been boosted from222 to a whopping 301bhp.

That’s serious punch goingthrough the front wheels of thevehicle, and enough to propel theFord to 62mph in a fleeting 5.9seconds.

Those who feel inclined to pushfor the 163mph top speed – and I amassured the car can hit that figure –would need access to a racetrack.

Not surprisingly the RS design isaggressive and very much in yourface. You wouldn’t guess it was aFord Focus with its DarthVader-style front grille, louvredbonnet vents and smokedheadlamps.

The dozens of motorists whocreep perilously close to your rearbumper will only spot the RS badgeafter clocking the gaping twinexhausts and huge roof spoiler.

But the Ford also has a beautythat is of serious value - the way itdrives in everyday conditions. Youcan pootle comfortably around townat 30mph and the car doesn’t feel

like a caged animal going crazy toget out.

And when that power surgedoes come, body-hugging

Recaro seats are there tocosset those up front.

The car’s interioris more standard

Focus with the

exception of a carbon-fibre effectfinish around the dash and centreconsole, plus dials for turbo boost,oil pressure and oil temperature.

Being a Focus means there’splenty of space, though for two notthree in rear, and a decent sizedboot.

A £750 Luxury Pack includes theoptions of Dual-Zone ElectronicAutomatic Temperature Control,air-con; automatic headlights;

rain-sensor wipers; auto-dimrear-view mirror; rearparking-distance sensors; tyredeflation-detection; and a FordKey-Free system.

On the down side, insurance isexpensive (Group 19) and theofficial average fuel figure of 30.5miles per gallon is fanciful, but it’sa small price to pay when you canbuy the fastest mainstream Fordever produced for just over £26,000.

Among them are the fringeplayers, then those on the marginsof the fringe.

Korean car maker SsangYongfalls into the latter category.

The only real chance a companylike this has is to play the valueticket – and that’s somethingSsangYong is managing rather well.

Three models – Rexton, Kyronand Rodius – make up the range andof those the Rodius MPV is anon-starter. I’ve only ever seen onein the metal and can only imaginethat this behemoth of a seven-seaterwas designed expressely for peoplewho don’t like cars.

More relevant by far areSsangYong’s latest model the Kyronoff-roader and its slightly largerstablemate the Rexton.

The Kyron’s principal rivals arefellow Koreans the Hyundai SantaFe and Kia Sorento plus Chevrolet’sCaptiva – and I reckon it’s a betterlooking car than all three.

There are six models in the rangeand all bar one of them come with a2.0-litre turbocharged common raildiesel engine.

Half have two-wheel drive and theremainder all-wheel drive whilethere’s a choice of manual or autotransmissions.

So where’s the value? Well at£14,995 – previous Kyrons started at£3,000 more – the entry grade 2.0 Seasily undercuts its competitorsand comes well kitted out to includethe likes of Hill Descent Control.

Then there’s the warranty whichextends to five years or 250,000miles.

The tested model was therange-topping Kyron 2.7 SPR withits noisy but powerful turbooil-burner that pumps out 165 PS ofpunch.

Nonetheless it’s only capable ofreturning 29 miles per gallon (ifyou’re lucky) via the MercedesT-Tronic automatic transmission,though that’s actually more

economical than the five-speedmanual.

In the Kyron’s favour is itspracticality. There’s ample room forfive plus reasonable cabin stowageand excellent visibility while theboot is vast and also has aconcealed multi-compartment traybeneath it.

SPR drivers get leather-cladluxury, permanent four-wheel drivefor off-road work and huge towingability – ideal if you have a caravan.

Overall this a car that has bothstyle and substance, though eventhe greenest model has a CO2 ratingof 191, putting it in a high car taxband that will cost private buyers£215 a year.
