GO ON, have a guess.How many differentversions of the new-lookAudi A4 do you thinkthere are?

It’s a popular car, so there’sbound to be a few different engines… and there’s an estate, and thenthere’s that off-road one … maybeeight or nine? A dozen?

Surprising as it may seem, thereare actually 110 different versions ofthe latest generation A4 available toorder from your local Audi dealerright now.

The difference between some ofthem may not amount to muchmore than a transmission swap, butthat’s still a huge number.

However, the one that reallystands out from that vast range doesso because of a letter, not a number.

The high-performance S4 is theflagship of the revitalised fleet – atleast until the evenhigher-performance RS4 joins theteam in September 2012.

At launch, though, the S4 is thefull-fat option in a range dominatedby eco-friendly engines andCO2-saving engineering tweaks,such as engine stop-start and a new‘efficiency’ mode.

Like its greener brothers, it hashad a styling makeover that subtlyreworks the front end to a morechiselled appearance. The S4 alsohas changes to its headlights,bumpers and air intakes.

Under the skin, though, thechanges are more clearly defined.

The S4’s 3.0-litre, six-cylinderTFSI engine delivers 330PS througha seven-speed S tronic gearbox.

That’s enough to get it from0-62mph in five seconds (theestate-bodied Avant takes one-tenthof a second longer) and on to alimited top speed of 155mph.

The quattro four wheel drivesystem makes the most of 440Nm oftorque and yet, according to Audi’sfigures, the car can still achieve34.9mpg on average.

To achieve that figure in realitywill require a very light touch onthe throttle, however, as on aspirited but by no means illegal testdrive I managed only 22mpg.

Clearly, fuel economy is not yourpriority if you have bought an S4and it’s only by letting it off theleash a little that you can enjoy itssporting character.

Like the rest of the new-lookrange, much work has been done byAudi to improve handling andsteering. Compared to the outgoingcar, there is a noticeableimprovement.

All models get electro-mechanicalpower steering, which constantlyadapts its gearing (and thereforeweighting) to the drivingconditions. It also draws no powerwhen the wheel is straight ahead,saving 7g/km of CO2.

However, even though the set-upfor the S4 is the best in the range, itstill lacks the feel of non-electronicsystems.

Occasionally, when backing offthe throttle, it can feel vague, evenmid-corner.

At least there is a fantastic newflat-bottomed wheel to help you live

out your racing driver fantasies.That aside, the S4 is a worthy

range-topper in a line-up that spansthe various Saloon, Avant andallroad versions.

Interiors have also been reworkedacross the range. They were neverexactly a weak point with Audi, butthe new cars have improvements tocontrols such as the MMInav-entertainment system and somenice new leather trims and finishes.

In terms of onboard technology

the new A4 models are a step upfrom the previous generation andnow feature a simplifiedmulti-media system and the abilityto hook the car up to the internet,turning it into a mobile WiFihotspot.

All new A4s are also fitted with adriver fatigue monitor and optionsinclude anti-collision systems andlane departure warnings and blindspot alerts.

With diesels now being the

predominant engine in the A4 –there are six of them available inthe range – average emissions havebeen cut by more than 20 per centcompared to the previous models.

Audi is also backing up itsstandard warranty on the A4 with aservice and maintenance packagewhich extends the guarantee to fiveyears and 90,000 miles and includesall routine work for three years aswell as the first MOT.

It’s available on the saloon, Avant

and allroad for £34 a month and canbe extended to include new tyres foran extra £18 a month.

For the S4 saloon and estate thepackage is more expensive, costing£44 or £66 a month to include tyres.

Pricing of the S4 range extendsfrom £38,665 on the road for the S4Saloon to £41,115 for the S4 AvantBlack Edition.

Meanwhile, the A4 range beginsat £23,625 OTR for the 1.8-litre TFSImanual.

Nothing is as it seems with SEATYOU are driving in

The car appears absolutelynormal – a large, roomyhatchback with a high degreeof comfort, satisfyinghandling and a 1.6 dieselengine that punches wellabove its weight. Yet thefigures just don’t add up for acar of this type.

Performance is what youwould expect, with a 118mphtop speed and a 0-62mph dashin 11.5 seconds, yet this caremits only 99g/km of carbonand has a combined fuelconsumption readout of anastonishing 74.3mpg. There’san even more mind-bogglingextra urban figure of 88.3mpg!

The answer you mightthink is that the car has somesort of additional hybridpower lurking under thebonnet. But no, the SEATLeon S Copa 1.6TDI CR EEcomotive has just a plainfour-cylinder 1,598cc turbodiesel with a 105ps poweroutput.

So how do they do it?The answer is a mix of

technology and aero-dynamics.

The story begins with the

wheels, which featuredeflectors and are shod withspecial low friction tyres.

Then a quick inspection ofthe exterior will reveal thatthe radiator grille is just astyled solid item.

A cheapo feature to keepthe price down? No, thisarrangement directs airflowout of the enginecompartment to reduce dragfrom 0.33 to 0.30 – every littlehelps they say.

Then SEAT utilised thewell-known 1.6 TSI enginewith common rail technology,a gearshift indicator and adiesel particulate filter. And afinal touch was addingengine start/stop and energyrecovery systems.

Energy recovery isinteresting. It works byvarying the amount of powerabsorbed by the alternator.

During braking, powerwhich would otherwise bewasted is drawn into theelectrical systems andbattery. Under accelerationthe alternator draws lessenergy, so more can be sent tothe driving wheels to aideconomy.

And the benefits aresubstantial. Apart from theobvious saving on fuel, thecar is exempt from road fundtax and is able to evade

London’s congestion charges.An impressive list of stats foran economy car that is in noway boring.

At £17,880 it offers a greatdeal, especially in terms ofpure driving pleasure and

responsive handling.There is no doubt that the

Leon range as a whole hasbeen one of the best productsyet from SEAT, the Spanisharm of the VolkswagenGroup.
