Welcome to Clayton State UniversityCongratulations on your acceptance to Clayton StateUniversity! We have many outstanding degree programs anda vast array of campus opportunities available to you thisupcoming school year. This is an exciting time to considerjoining us as a first-year student. As you move towards thenext step to becoming a first-time freshmen this August,we’ve designed this booklet to provide you with importantacademic information related to the new First-Year Advising& Retention Center; the First-Year Experience Program,where you will select your learning community and initialcourse schedule; New Student Orientation; and otheracademic support services such as the Center for AcademicSuccess and the Disability Resource Center.

First-Year Advising & Retention CenterThe First-Year Advising & Retention Center is designed to provide academicadvising and support to all first-time, first-year students and serves as a generalpoint of contact. The center will also house the first-year experience and thelearning communities program. Scheduled to open in time for the Fall 2011semester, this new center will be located in the recently renovated formerBusiness & Health Sciences (BHS) Building. Students will be assigned a personaladvisor who will guide and support them throughout their first year journey.Advisors will remain in close contact with students and will monitor their academicprogress in order to make certain students are meeting the academic demands oftheir first year in college. Advisors will also refer students to campus resource asneeded throughout this important year.

First-Year Experience ProgramThe First-Year Experience program is designed to introduce students to theacademic, social, and cultural community at Clayton State University. In an effort tohelp students adjust to college life and ensure success, all first-time traditionalfreshmen are required to participate in one of our first-year learning communitiesand complete this program during the first semester at Clayton State.

This booklet includes the title, description and courses identified for each of the 17thematic learning communities. Each community includes CSU 1022 – UniversityFoundations. This college success course is taught by the leader of the learningcommunity. In addition, each community includes ENGL 1101 – English Composition Iand one additional course specific for the community. You will also be assigned to amathematics class based on the results of your ACCUPLACER Math Test andpossibly one additional course. Please note that certain math placement test resultsmay exclude you from learning communities that include biology and chemistrycourses. Descriptions for all learning community courses can be found at the end ofthis booklet.

Please carefully read the title and description for each learning community, andidentify your top two choices based on your major and/or interests. If you have notdeclared a major, several communities have been specially designed to guide youthrough the career development process to help you identify the right major for you.

When you register for new student orientation, you will be asked a series ofquestions to help determine your appropriate class schedule. You will alsoselect your learning community. When you arrive at orientation this summer,you will be given your final schedule for your first semester and will bepermitted to make minor adjustments if needed. It’s that simple!

First-year students who decide to enroll in less than nine semester hours can meetthis requirement by enrolling in an individual section of CSU 1022 – UniversityFoundations during their first semester.

Description: The trials and tribulations of the average worker has been a favoritetopic in television, film, satirical literature and comic strips. Description: This learning community will focus on establishing skills andtechniques needed to be an academically successful student and will also focus on the challenges that come along with being a first-time, full-time freshman. Title: Pouring the Foundation for Success in Business

Leader: Mr. Sanford Dennis

Description: This learning community will have a three part focus designed toprovide a foundation for pre-business majors to have a successfulcollege career. The learning community will focus on establishingskills and methods needed to be a successful student. This willencompass exposure to campus resources, goal setting, timemanagement, etc. The second focus will be on the entire careerdevelopment process for business majors. This will include selecting a major, professional development, internships, etc. It willprovide a timeline and map that covers career planning from thefreshman year as a pre-business major all the way to senior year as a graduate. The third segment will cover financial planning andmoney management while in college.

Title: Cultivating Professionalism

Description: The main objective of this course is for students to know who theyare and realize their full potential. Emphasis will be placed onguidelines for success and how to function effectively within theuniversity setting and, by extension, the workforce. The followingtopics are included in this course: professional ethics, how to handle disputes and conflict resolution, presentation strategies, time management and discipline. Each topic will be accompanied by the relevant materials and resources.

The Centerfor Academic Success (CAS) offers a variety of personalized academic services toall Clayton State University students, including:

CSU 1022 - University Foundations: University Foundations helps new studentsmake a successful transition to Clayton State University and prepares them to meetthe challenges of higher level learning and the demands of their chosen field. Thecourse connects students and faculty who share a common interest by building acommunity of learners committed to achieving excellence. University Foundationsrefines academic goals, encourages a greater sense of personal responsibility,creates intentional learners, and provides the information and support that studentsneed to earn a college degree. CHEM 1211 - Principles of Chemistry: First course in a two-semester sequencecovering the fundamental principles and applications of chemistry designed forscience majors. Topics to be covered include composition of matter, stoichiometry,periodic relations, and nomenclature. High School Chemistry is required for thiscourse. Students who have not taken Chemistry in High School, and who desire totake CHEM 1211, must first take and pass CHEM 1151 and CHEM 1151L.

CHEM 1151 - Survey of Chemistry: First course in a two-semester sequencecovering elementary principles of general, organic and biochemistry designed forallied health science majors (this course is also opened to non-science majors).Topics to be covered include elements and compounds, chemical equations,nomenclature, and molecular geometry. Prerequisite(s): Exemption or exit from Math 0099.

CRIT 1101 - Critical Thinking: A course focusing on skills essential to effectivecritical thinking in both academic and general use. The study of important commoncomponents (issue, method, evidence, and conclusion) provides a basis for theconstruction, analysis, and evaluation of arguments in a variety of contexts. Thecourse also addresses fundamental elements of informal logic (e.g., induction,deduction, fallacy- avoidance) and of elementary formal logic (e.g., tests for validity)as they inform good reasoning in any context, from everyday decision-making toacademic argumentation. POLS 1101 - American Government: An introductory level survey of the Americanpolitical system in an international context, emphasizing across cultural approach tothe study of the structure and processes of policy decision-making. The courseincorporates comparison of the American political system and other types ofpolitical systems. The course also includes the study of world geography,emphasizing knowledge of the global configuration of nation states.

PSYC 1101 - Introduction to General Psychology: A broad survey of the majortopics in psychology including, but not limited to, research methodology, biologicaland social factors influencing behavior, development, learning, memory, personality,and abnormal psychology. Applicability of theories and research findings acrosscontemporary cultures is considered.
