Campbell College (C.S. Lewis)Campbell College was founded, according to Lewis, ‘for the express purpose of giving Ulster boys all the advantages of a public school education without the trouble of crossing the Irish Sea.’ Lewis boarded here for half a term in the autumn of 1910 and, among the chief impressions of his time there, were fond memories of his influential English master, Lewis Alden.

Circular Road, Belfast - (C.S. Lewis)Little Lea was the Lewis family home from 1905 until 1930. It was here that Lewis first took to writing as a hobby in his childhood because of a disability in his thumbs, which meant he could not make things with his hands. He claimed that someone could do more with a castle in a story than with any cardboard castle that ever stood on a nursery table. Few have proved him wrong. The house is now a private residence.

Nuada at the Battle of Moy Tura / Street MuralThe character in the mural above is High King Nuada of the Tuatha de Dannan at the Battle of Moy Tura (one of the most important sagas in early Irish literature.) He defeated the Fir Bolg (stomach people – they got this name because they were small people who only reached the height of your stomach) at the 2nd Battle of Moy Tura about 5,000 years ago. The story comes from the Book of Invasions which was written around the 11th Century; one thousand years later Gerard Mo Chara Kelly painted it at the top of the Whiterock Road.

Sinclair Seaman Church Although dating from 1857, the interior of this Venetian style harbour-side church was refurbished on a maritime theme and is continued as a gleaming tribute to the city’s seafaring traditions by a friendly congrega-tion.

Shipyard workers, dockers and sailors at the time of Titanic would have felt at home in its ship-like interior, with its pulpit shaped as a ship’s prow flanked by navigation lights, ship’s binnacle font and the bell of HMS Hood calling worshippers to service.
