n the campaign to raise funds for a dental outreach clinic at Providence Milwaukie Hospital received a great kickoff, thanks to Mike Richardson, foundation board member, and his wife, Karie. in september 2012, the Richardsons opened their lovely home on the lake of Oswego for the fundraising event. Mike challenged attendees to donate in memory of Joseph M. Bernard Jr., who died the previous June after serving the hospital for decades as an adviser and fundraiser. Joe’s family is spearheading the campaign for the dental clinic, which will serve people in need and be named in his memory. Joe’s dedication to Providence Milwaukie and its Mission was strong and personal.

n Benefiting the new dental outreach clinic, the annual Partners in Health dinner in October drew 110 people and raised $65,000. guest speaker Michael Plunkett, D.D.s., noted that each year more than 1,600 people visit Providence Milwaukie’s emergency department for help with dental problems – an average of more than four patients a day. the cost of treating these patients in the ED is 10 times higher than providing preventive care in a dental office. Dr. Plunkett said he was happy to be working with the hospital to improve the health of community residents in need. “Providence Milwaukie is looking at the person as a whole person,” he said, “and oral health affects your overall health.”

n in 2012 the foundation sponsored four Community Health in Motion clinics, which serve health needs of low-income and vulnerable Clackamas County residents. these events provided immunizations for 200 schoolchildren; free sports physicals and injury-risk assessments for 170 students; and 210 free flu shots and health screenings. Providence Milwaukie Hospital was recognized by the American Hospital Association in 2012 for Community Health in Motion’s innovative approach to health promotion.

Immunizations and flu shots were among the offerings at Providence Milwaukie’s Community Health in Motion clinics, which serve area residents in need.
