Webometrics advantage
Quantitative analysis, applying bibliometric methods to …
(Public Web) inter-citing peer-reviewed papers
+ Interlinked academic web documents
Visitors, linkers, downloaders and invokers
Readers, users are global (millions!!)
Link motivations, linkers are more diverse
+ Informal results, raw data and multimedia
Transparency (anti-fraud, open peer-review)
+ Supporting contents
Learning material, knowledge resources, other tools
+ Institutional, personal info
If “Web Publish or Perish”
Easy access, cheap publication, rich contents
Web indicators useful for scientific evaluation

Monitoring Academic Webspace
Tools
Direct analysis: Robots, crawlers
Indirect analysis: Commercial Search Engines (Google, Yahoo!, Bing, Exalead)
Methods
Use of relevant web variables
Web publication, links exchanged, visits and visitors
Grouping and networking according institutional, geographical or disciplinary criteria
Better naming standards for Web pages, files, sites, domains or links
Institutional site (specially in the academia)
From citation to “sitation” (site citation)
“Big numbers” involved (orders of magnitude higher)

Webometrics of Academic Institutions
Universities and Research Organizations are very complex
Different missions
Research, scientific publication
International cooperation, scientific events
Education
Teaching, open learning
“Third Mission”
Knowledge, technological transfer
Socio-cultural activities
Other academic/para-academic activities
Libraries, University Hospitals, Museums, Zoos, Botanical Gardens, TV & Radio Stations, Theaters, Sports
An holistic approach is needed

Final comments
Electronic publication (Web!) is already the most important scholarly communication tool
Web should play a key role in the evaluation of the academic activities, scientific research, technological development and the socio-cultural commitment of the academia
Quantitative Web indicators are suited for playing that role and promoting Open Access initiatives as Web Publish or Perish is the new motto
Webometrics research offers plenty of opportunities for developing theoretical and empirical analysis given the diversity of new tools and techniques currently available
