Silence and the Last Temptation of Fr. Rodrigues
Augustine’s Alley - January 16, 2017
Martin Scorsese’s epic Silence, based on the 1966 novel by
Shūsaku Endō is a stunning but challenging work of cinematic achieve-
ment. Like all truly beautiful art, Silence requires our full attention to even
begin to process it subtlety and symbolism.
Silence starts as a Heart of Darkness search for a brilliant Jesuit
priest Fr. Cristóvão Ferreira who may have apotheosized his Catholic Faith
during the Christian persecutions in 17th Century Japan. Horrified at the
slander to their mentor and spiritual father, two younger Portuguese Jesu-
its, Fr. Sebastião Rodrigues and Fr. Francisco Garupe volunteer to search
Japan for him. At best they hope to clear his name, or if the worse be true,
to save his soul for God. Their guide to the hidden Christian communities
in Japan is the outcast Kichijiro who has apostatized his Catholic faith. Of
course apostatizing is very simple: all one needs to do is to step on a
carved icon called a “fumie.” Kichijiro has survivor’s guilt after watching
his entire family martyred for their Christian faith. He begs Fr. Rodrigues
to hear his confession and laments that he is a weak man who should have
been born in a more peaceful time.
Fr. Rodrigues and Fr. Garupe find the faith still alive in small,
isolated villages. The Japanese Catholics they find there have been without a priest and the Sacraments for
years. Christ’s lambs are starving and eagerly embrace the priests who in turn feed them with the Eucharist
and the Sacrament of Confession. For a short time, the priests, minister their flock but with the Inquisitor,
Inoue Masashige, closing in, Fr. Rodrigues and Fr. Garupe decide to split up. Kichijiro, the weak man that he
is, betrays Fr. Rodrigues to the Inquisitor and is placed with other captured Christians. Defiant, Fr. Rodrigues
says that persecution only makes him stronger and says he wants a “real challenge” to his faith. That severe
challenge arrives in the person of Fr. Ferreira, who has indeed apostatized.
Ferreira is a broken, joyless man, who nervously glances back to his Japanese handlers under the
shocked accusations from Rodrigues. Not only is Ferreira a defeated man but he is also an evil man in the
sense of St. Thomas Aquinas. He’s evil not because of what he does, but by what he lacks. He is a man de-
prived of almost every good: his faith, his culture, his courage, his vocation as a priest, even his very identity.
Ferreira’s inward damnation is effectively symbolized by the Japanese name of an executed criminal that is
now forced upon him as his own. Very little of Ferreira is left in the shell of a man that sits across from Ro-
drigues. As Ferreira himself states, “I am he is no longer the man that you once knew”.
That night, Fr. Rodrigues is forced to watch five Japanese Christians tortured. In the shadowy dark-
ness of Fr. Rodrigues’ prison cell, Ferreira’s eyes shine black. He taunts Rodrigues, saying that the tortured
screams he is hearing is his own fault, if he would just but lightly touch the fumie with his foot, the prisoners
would be released. With the fumie just a step away, Ferreira administers the coup de gras, telling Rodrigues if
Christ was here right now, He would step on the Fumie to save the tortured people and that it would be Ro-
drigues’ greatest act of love if he would just step. At this moment, Christ apparently breaks His silence to
Rodrigues: “Come ahead now. It’s all right. Step on Me. I understand your pain. I was born into this world to
share men’s pain. I carried this cross for your pain. Step.”
As Rodrigues steps, a cock crows three times …
Was the voice of Christ real? Was it just the delusion of a sleep deprived, tortured brain? Or was the
voice something else entirely? One hint seems to emerge as the voice continues after Rodrigues steps: “Your
life is now with Me.” Jesus said that the greatest love is for a man to lay down his life for the sake of others,
but only the Devil would ask a man to lay down his very soul to save himself from pain.
So what about us? Rodrigues’ fumie undid him because he fell victim to two lies: The belief that the
innocent can be made responsible for the evil actions of others, in this case the torture of the Japanese Chris-
tians, and that doing evil to counter a greater evil will bring about a good. For Rodrigues the results were trag-
ic, he lost everything and at best he may have only one a temporary reprieve for the Japanese Christians who
will likely still face death at a later time.
We are faced with Fumies whenever we believe that doing a “small” evil in the hope of preventing
an even greater evil adds up to a good. It is only with faith, trust and above all else, humility, that can give us
the strength not to step when we should not.
*Note our Mass time change for next Saturday, February 11. Because of our
Winter Gala, Holy Mass will be celebrated at 4 p.m. rather than 5 p.m.

would like to say,
“Thank you!” to all
of our parishioners
for their support of
the school. We are
very grateful for your support in prayers, financial sup-
port, and stewardship. We would not be here if it wasn't
for this loving, supportive, and faithful community.
Please pray with me:
“Almighty Father,
You sent forth your Son as a beacon of hope for all people. As
Teacher, he has given us the prime example of the importance
of education. As disciples, we look to him for inspiration and
strength. Thank you for the many sisters, brothers, priests, and
laypeople who have dedicated their lives in service to our
Catholic schools. Thank you for the teachers and administra-
tors who sustain our schools today. Thank you for the parents
who have given support and witness to the importance of Cath-
olic education in their daily lives. Thank you for the students
who work hard to further their education. Bless Immaculate
Heart of Mary School and the many people who advance our
mission. May our building be a home for those who seek to
grow in faith, knowledge, and service of others. May our com-
munity always support one another and exhibit hospitality to
newcomers. Fill our minds with knowledge and wisdom. May
our understanding of the world help us to grow in appreciation
for it. Fill our hearts with gladness. May we always turn to
you in times of need. Fill our hands with the tools we need to
serve others. May we show them your unceasing love through
our actions.
Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us."

Catholic Charities Adult Day Center
February is National Senior Independence Month
Did you know that February is National Senior Independ-
ence Month? As we age, it becomes more difficult to
maintain independence and take care of ourselves. It can
be challenging to stay active, socialize, and eat well –
especially if you have a medical condition.
Catholic Charities’ Adult Day Center in Madison helps to
keep seniors in their own homes and communities by of-
fering an affordable alternative to nursing homes and in-
home healthcare. Our center provides individualized care
for adults with medical conditions and has a specific pro-
gram for those with dementia/Alzheimer’s. We have an
RN, CNAs, and Recreation Specialists on staff and are a
certified Music & Memory facility.
You're invited the center’s open house on Wednesday,
April 26th from 5-6:30 p.m. Tour our new facility, learn
about the services we offer, and enjoy light snacks and
refreshments. Contact Nichole Kraemer at 608-663-7117
ext. 8106 if you have questions or would like a personal
tour. The center is open from 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Mon-
day – Friday.

AREA EVENTS
OREMUS "Lord, Teach us to Pray"
Relational Prayer
Prayer is an encounter with a Person -
it's all about a Relationship. 4 Steps
that will help us to foster this relation-
ship follow - they are not a checklist, but
rather a vibrant dynamic.
1) Acknowledge - We begin
prayer by acknowledging the real pres-
ence of God who is always beholding
us. As I begin my prayer, what is in His eyes as I look up
at Him? We also need to acknowledge what is on our
heart as we come to pray. A deep relationship is an honest
exchange of each other's hearts.
2) Relate - Rather than simply thinking "about"
God or what is on our hearts, we speak to God directly
about what we sense in our hearts - even the messiness of
our lives. Nothing is off limits with God. Sometimes we
struggle with prayer because we resist talking to God
about the real things of life. God wants to talk with us and
heal those areas where we most need Him.
3) Receive - We then need to take time to be si-
lent to listen to God. He wants to speak to us. He will re-
veal His voice to us in our hearts through a voice, a song
that runs through our head, a memory, a sensation in our
body, a Scripture passage or phrase. Don't be afraid of the
silence, and be patient.
4) Respond - This is our opportunity to respond
to what we have received from God. It can be more con-
versation, a question, a "yes," tears, laughter, etc.
You are welcome to join us in the IHM church meeting
room every Tuesday through March 14*. For more infor-
mation contact study leaders:
Tuesday mornings (9:15-10:30) Janice Miller

Tuesday evenings (6:30-7:45) Paul Kachelmeier

Lighthouse CD of the Week
Fr. Mike Schmitz tackles some of the
most difficult topics in the Church today
with humor, clarity, and theological truth.
In this talk, he challenges us to not settle
for mediocrity and to allow Christ to
change our lives. Fr. Mike goes on to explain that once
we are changed by the love of Jesus, then together we can
change the world.
