SKILLSHARE @ HUDSON HOUSE
Following a successful season of courses
which allow experts in a particular field to
pass on their skills to others, SkillShare
will resume activities after the summer
break. If you have any ideas for courses,
or would like to give others the benefit of
your own expertise, please contact us on
The scheme started in October 2012, and
courses have covered a wide range of
interests. For those with a technical bent
we have included photography, map-
reading and navigation, computing, and
astronomy. Taster sessions in handicrafts
have included flower arranging, rag-rug
making, basic quilting, bead-threading and
beauty treatments. On the musical front
there was a “singing for pleasure” morning,
and learners’ ukulele tuition.
We are especially grateful to those
talented experts who have led these
sessions and passed across their knowledge
so proficiently. Now we just need your
ideas to form a programme for the coming
autumn; perhaps developments from earlier
subjects or new ideas such as archaeology,
public speaking or sketching.
Reeth and District
Community Sports Club Limited
Registered Charity
Number 1129787 (CRN 6730364)
We are concerned at the sudden and quite
unacceptable increase in dog muck fouling
on the Athletic Field. It is not reasonable
to have to clear dog muck before every
cricket match or other proper usage of
the field. The Sports Company would
remind everyone:
This is a private field.
No dogs are allowed.
No one, whether from Reeth, the
Caravan Site or elsewhere has any right
of access over this land or down to the
river. There is no public right of way
whatsoever over the land.
Sporting rights are reserved to the
Company. Permission to fish should be
made to the local angling club.
The facility, including the field is made
available for sports or other agreed
recreational use to affiliated bodies and to
others by agreement. NEW MINISTERS
On Saturday 6th July at 3pm, the new
minister for Reeth Evangelical
Congregational Church, Rev. David Levell,
will be inducted at a service in the Church.
All are welcome.
On Saturday 17th July the Induction of
the Reverends Hilary and Stephen
Collinson to the URC Tees Swale Pastorate
will take place in Northgate URC Church,
Darlington at 2.30pm. All welcome

CHRISTIAN AID
Thank you very much indeed to everyone
for their support for Christian Aid Week.
The House-to House Collection in May, the
Service at St Mary’s Church,
Arkengarthdale together with the Coffee
Morning at the Drop-In and the Produce
Stall on the Green raised a total of
£2745.50. The Coffee Morning and
Produce Stall were particularly well
supported. Thank you all for your
generosity.
The House -to-House Collection for each
area was as follows:
The focus for our collection this year was
Christian Aid’s work in three countries. In
the south of Zimbabwe, Christian Aid’s
Partner, Dabane Trust, has helped to build
a sand dam, transforming not only their
harvests but the life of the whole
community. A project in Kenya is providing
weather forecasts by text messages to
mobile phones to help farmers make
better decisions about what to grow and
when to plant it. A project in Bolivia is
securing rights to the land where people
of the Amazon rain forest have lived for
generations. Thanks to your support, prayers and donations, Christian Aid partner organisations are helping to rebuild lives and livelihoods in these countries.
We are encouraged to support the ‘Enough
Food for Everyone IF Campaign’. The
campaign tackles 4 issues head on: aid,
tax, land and transparency. We can
overcome hunger IF:
Aid is used to help the poorest people
feed themselves.
We stop big companies dodging tax in poor
countries.
We stop poor farmers being forced off
their land.
We force governments and big
corporations to be honest and
transparent about their actions.
More details can be found on www.christianaid.org.uk
BRIC-A-BRAC STALL
A Bric-a-Brac stall will be held for
Christian Aid on Friday 19th July on Reeth
Green. Contributions for the stall are
welcome. If you would like any items
collected please ring Susan Allison on

REETH & GUNNERSIDE SCHOOLS
Our School Family
After a very busy and very successful
year, (we have just been awarded the
nationally recognized ICT Quality Mark for
our excellence in ICT teaching) we arrive
at the point in the year when we say our
goodbyes. Our Year 5 and 6 children will be
performing their end of year concert at
Reeth Memorial Hall on Monday 15th July,
6.00pm and Tuesday 16th July, 6.15pm; this
year’s production is “Wind in the Willows”.
Please do come along and watch either
performance
This year, children will leave us to transfer
to Richmond School and to The
Wensleydale School. Some members of
staff will be leaving us too. Some go
because they are at the end of a fixed
term contract and sometimes teachers
leave because they have got a job in
another school and are progressing up the
career ladder.
As people move on I tell all the children
and staff that they must think of each
other as part of our big school family.
Sometimes in a family people move away to
take on a new job, to study in a new place
or to accept a new challenge but that does
not mean they are no longer part of our
family. Wherever they go and however far
away, they are ‘one of ours’ and we
continue to watch with pride as they make
their way in the world. Like any family
waiting back at home we love to hear from
those who are away from our day-to-day
lives and to see them again on celebration
days and get-togethers.
And just like a family, we do not think of
these moves to new schools, new towns or
new responsibilities with anything except
pride in the individuals and love for the
family as a whole. Whoever you are and
wherever you go we will always think of you
and have your welfare in our hearts. So go
out there, be a success and most of all BE
HAPPY!
Linda Cork and staff.

REETH & THE TOUR DE FRANCE
In July 2014 the Tour de France comes to
Swaledale. This "once in a lifetime" event,
on a scale so massive that is hard to
comprehend, will be publicised
worldwide. One thing is certain: it will not
be "business as usual" for anyone in
Swaledale on 5 July 2014. At the
Swaledale & Arkengarthdale Business
Forum meeting held on 11 June at the CB
Inn, it was agreed that a number of issues
need to be considered at a local level by
the various communities of Swaledale. The
intention is that interested parties in
Reeth will meet on a monthly basis over
the next 12 months with the aim of trying
to make this a fantastic experience for
all, whilst at the same time ensuring that
concerns are addressed and information is
made available to residents of Reeth as
well as visitors. Please watch out for the
posters and come along to the meetings.
THE 2 DALES LUNCH CLUBS will be holding a fund raising

at Reeth Market
on Friday 2nd
August
Any contributions of cakes or produce
or items for the raffle hamper
would be greatly appreciated,
together with your support on the day.

CHURCH LADIES WITH TYPEWRITERS.
Those wonderful Church Bulletins! Thank
Goodness for church ladies with
typewriters. These sentences (with all the
BLOOPERS) actually appeared in church
bulletins :
The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes
meals …..
The sermon this morning: Jesus Walks on
the Water.
The sermon tonight: Searching for Jesus
Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale.
It's a chance to get rid of those things not
worth keeping around the house.
Bring your husbands Don't let worry kill you off - let the
Church help. Remember in prayer the many who are sick
of our community.
Smile at someone who is hard to love. Say
'Hell' to someone who doesn't care much
about you
Mrs. Bonnie Talley sang 'I will not pass this
way again,' giving obvious pleasure to the
congregation.
Next Thursday there will be tryouts for
the choir. They need all the help they can
get. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were
married on October 24 in the church. So
ends a friendship that began in
their school days.
At the evening service tonight, the sermon
topic will be 'What Is Hell?' Come early
and listen to our choir practice.
Eight new choir robes are currently
needed due to the addition of several new
members and to the deterioration of
some older ones.
Scouts are saving aluminium cans, bottles
and other items to be recycled. Proceeds
will be used to cripple children. The church will host an evening of fine
dining, super entertainment and gracious
hostility
Potluck supper Sunday at 5pm - prayer and
medication to follow.
This evening at 7pm there will be a hymn
singing in the park across from the Church.
B r i n g a b l a n k e t a n d c o m e
prepared to sin.
Weight Watchers will meet at 7pm at the
F i r s t P r e s b y t e r i a n C h u r c h .
Please use large double door at the side
entrance.
And my favourite:
The Associate Minister unveiled the
church's new campaign slogan last Sunday:
"I Upped My Pledge - Up Yours".

RESTORATION WORK COMPLETED AT
ST. MARY’S CHURCH,
ARKENGARTHDALE
The recent completion of the internal
decoration of the church saw the
conclusion of a five-year period of
restoration at St. Mary’s. The building is
very nearly 200 years old and substantial
repairs were carried out at a cost of about
£250,000 to prepare the Grade II listed
church for the next 200 years on its site
above Arkle Beck.
Work has included the repair and
restoration of the main east window and
the north and south side windows,
replacement of the roof slates and
insulation of the ceiling, installation of a
new boiler and complete replacement of
the wiring, repairs to the internal
plasterwork and full repainting.
The Bishop of Knaresborough visited the
church recently for a Confirmation
Service, and waxed lyrical over the appeal
of the freshness and light of the interior.
Raising £250,000 is a major exercise and
St. Mary’s District Church Council wishes
to thank all who have contributed to allow
the work to be carried out. English
Heritage gave generous grants amounting
to about 60% of the overall cost, and
other monies came from Trusts supporting
the maintenance of religious buildings. The
DCC is particularly grateful for the
support from many local people who have
given donations and supported fund-raising
events, which together generated around
£80,000 towards the overall cost.

WINDOWS 8.1 ON THE WAY SOON
A major upgrade to Windows 8 will be
coming soon, imaginatively called Windows
8.1. It will be publicly available as a
‘preview’ version from June 26th. If you
really want to see what’s new you can use
the preview version but be warned if you
try it you will need to reinstall Windows
from scratch and all you apps and desktop
applications to upgrade to the final version
of 8.1 when it is finally released. I would
advise holding on and waiting for the final
version to be released properly and avoid
the hassles. This will all happen through
the Windows App store. The first question
most people ask is ‘have they put back the
missing Start button on the desktop’. Well
the answer is yes and no. They have put a
“Start” button of sorts but it does not
show a start menu like it used to in
Windows – instead it takes you back to the
colour tiles pages, but it appears to also
allow you to go to a list view of apps if you
want. Microsoft are being cagey about the
details of how the new Start button will
work but my guess is that it will be used to
‘encourage’ you back to the tiles because
that is where Microsoft anticipate making
a lot of money. They really want to wean
users away from the old desktop (no money
for MS). Having said that most people I
meet prefer to use the desktop on a PC or
a laptop. If, like me, you want to use the
traditional desktop as your main screen
and you would like a normal Start button
with a start menu I recommend a third
party program called Start8 which is
produced by www.stardock.com. This
makes Windows look, work and feel very
much like Windows 7 and if you don’t want
to you never have to see the tile again. At
$5 it is well worth investigating (there is
even a free trial version so you can try
before you buy). So what else is there to
look forward to in Windows 8.1 … well a
new version of Internet Explorer (version
11) which they claim is a lot faster. It
needs to be because current versions are
lamentably slow compared to Google
Chrome and Firefox. There are other
enhancements coming but having watch a
Microsoft presentation they mostly seem
cosmetic changes aimed at letting people
customise things a bit more. Final words –
warning …
1) Scams seem to be doing the rounds still,
especially telephone cold calling. I have
had a number of people ask me about
phone scams this month. Please don’t let
people you don’t know con you into letting
them into your computer or get your card
details.
2) Yahoo and BT still seem to be having
real problems with their email systems.
Hackers are still breaking into accounts
and sending out loads of spam to your
address book. It is really too bad as this
has been going on for over a year. A
number of people contacted me about this
– there is nothing you can really do except
complain to BT or Yahoo if you are
affected and change your password. The
only alternative is to change your email
address.
That’s it for this month. As always do drop
me an email via my website
(www.dalescomputerservices.com) if you
have a question or comment. Carol Haynes

BEAUTY OF THE YORKSHIRE DALES
IN THE FRAME
Stunning photographs of wildlife in the
Yorkshire Dales will be on show in a special
exhibition in Bainbridge over the summer.
The Yoredale offices of the Yorkshire
Dales National Park Authority will be
displaying images from Carperby-based
wildlife photographer Simon Phillpotts
(correct). His exhibition will be the latest
in a series staged in the reception area of
the offices, which are open between
8.30am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday.
Richard Burnett, the Authority’s Director
of Corporate Services, said: “Simon has
produced some amazing photographs that
capture many of the special qualities of
this National Park. “We hope they will be
of interest to everyone who comes into the
offices over the next two months.” Simon
has recently appeared on BBC's
Countryfile and is in the Series 3 of ITV's
'The Dales' with Ade Edmondson. He is
also a co-founder of the community-led
Wensleydale Red Squirrel Group
(www.wensleydalersg.co.uk), which aims to
conserve and expand the range of Red
Squirrels in the Yorkshire Dales. He runs
Wild Dales Photography with his wife
Sarah, producing wildlife images, prints
and greetings cards and running
photographic workshops and short break
holidays in the area. “The Dales provide an
amazing variety of wildlife habitats, which
means I never have far to travel for some
of some favourite subjects such as Red
Squirrel, Grouse, Dipper and Hare,” he
said. His images have been highly
commended in the British Wildlife
Photography Awards and appear regularly
in the national and local press, in magazines
and on greetings cards, including for the
RSPB, RSPCA and Friends of the Earth.
The exhibition will run from May 31 to
August 1.
WE’VE DONE IT AGAIN!
The Dales Countryside Museum in
Hawes has won a top national award for
the way it looks after its visitors – for the
second year running. The Museum, which is
owned by the Yorkshire Dales National
Park Authority (YDNPA), has yet again
been officially recognised as a tourist top
spot by Visit England and has been
awarded its Visitor Attraction Quality
Assurance Scheme mark. The scheme is
managed by Visit England and involves a
network of regional assessors who make
site inspection visits. Museum manager
Fiona Rosher said: “It’s really good news
that we have been given the quality mark
for a second time. “It’s a tribute to all the
staff and volunteers who work so hard to
make the Museum a dynamic place to visit
and maintain the high standards of displays
and exhibits. “We are constantly
developing the Museum’s potential as a
major attraction in Hawes and the
surrounding area, and the award is a
reflection of that hard work.” Ian
McPherson, the YDNPA’s Member
Champion for Promoting Understanding,
said: “The Museum is a treasure trove of
exhibitions and features that bring the
Dales past and present to life. On top of
that, it is constantly providing a wide range
of interactive activities that gives its
visitors the chance to learn and
understand more about the people and the
beautiful yet fragile landscape of the
National Park.”

NEW FACES
Gayle Mill’s heritage education and
training project which began over 2 years
ago has been successfully managed and
delivered by Samantha Jennings. The
opportunity for schools to visit Gayle Mill
and learn about its significance in local
history, textile manufacture, electricity
generation and wood working has proved to
be popular with pupils, parents and
teachers alike. These enjoyable visits
have been tailored in line with the National
Curriculum with specific reference to
History, Science, Art, Design and
Technology. Samantha has also visited
schools either at their assembly or for a
specific class to demonstrate how water
power works with a model. The project is
also popular with young people and adults
who have enhanced their knowledge of
traditional crafts through various
demonstrations and hands on workshops.
Everyone associated with Gayle Mill wishes
Samantha well as she is soon to begin her
maternity leave. In order to complete the
project (whilst Samantha is otherwise
occupied) additional funding has been
sourced from the Yorkshire Dales LEADER
programme to employ two part time staff.
Sue Stokes and Laura Hodgson will work
together to enable Gayle Mill to deliver
the rest of the programme. William
Lambert, Chairman of Gayle Mill Trust
said; ‘We all wish Samantha well as she
moves on to a new chapter in her life, and
welcome Laura and Sue to the team. We
are very excited to see the LEADER
project through to its completion this
December.’ Sue has been involved in with
Gayle Mill Trust in recent years as a
volunteer and will mainly be working on
running the Heritage Skills events at the
Mill. Laura is new to the team; she lives in
Richmond with her two young sons and will
mainly be running the education side of the
project, working with local schools. There
are a variety of heritage skills courses
planned at the mill for the rest of the year
including blacksmithing, stone slate
roofing, printing a cotton bag and other
heritage crafts. You can book a course or
plan a school visit by contacting Sue or
Laura at Gayle Mill on 01969 667320 .

DALES CRICKET CLUB –
great start- great sponsors!
Our local cricket club has made one of
their most successful starts to the season
in the Darlington and District League. At
the end on May they remain unbeaten and
have progressed into the semi final of the
league cup! The recent win over local rivals
Barningham was particularly sweet and all
players strove hard to ensure a
comfortable and sound victory. Solid
performances from many players have
been responsible for this success but
mention needs making of the contributions
from Chris Hardwick both with the ball
and bat and from Jon Simpson, Nigel
Winter and Tom Hollingsworth, apologies
for not mentioning others. The inclusion
this season of Sam Winter who was barred
due to age last season gives support for
the youth initiative of the club. His skills
shown for the Yorkshire Under 12’s will
hopefully be passed to the more senior
club players (one hopes). There is an air of
anticipation and close camaraderie this
season and it is of note that the number of
sponsors has also increased giving the club
a more stable financial footing. You may
have noticed the promotional sign for the
club on the Reeth Bridge which details the
names of sponsors for each home game.
Local businesses (and indeed residents)
who show financial support for this long
established local club are now rewarded
by having details of their business
displayed on this board and also on a
similar board at the cricket field.
The club has a new website at
www.DalesCricketClub.co.uk ; where all club
news including fixtures, results, photos,
sponsors, a blog and much more can be
found.
We would like to thank our sponsors for
this season so far who are: Rowena
Hutchinson, (Red Lion, Langthwaite),
Norman Brown Estate Agents and Harvey
Robinson (Reeth Garage -Arkengarthdale
Road).
Any business or individual wishing to
consider sponsorship or supporting the
club by other means is asked to contact

on Wednesday 17th (NOT on 10th as
previously advertised) by Andre Berry who
will be looking at local peat spades.
Commercial-scale peat cutting on lowland
bogs has frequently made the headlines in
recent years because of concerns about the
damage to internationally important wildlife
and its habitats. As part of the annual cycle
of land use, however, hand peat cutting was
simply part of everyday life for centuries;
because of this, its scale and the significant
changes it made to our landscape are often
overlooked. This talk will look at the tools,
techniques and landscapes of hand peat
cutting, with a focus on the Yorkshire
Dales, but encompassing northern England
more generally and Wales. Although trained
as an Agricultural Botanist, André Berry
has spent most of his career advising on the
management of archaeological sites and
historic landscapes. So if you have a peat
spade bring it along! Our August talk is on
7th by Stephen Eastmead who will
introduce the new online digital archive
online. Stephen has scanned our large
collection of local photographs onto our
archive website, and will be selecting a
range for your edification and delight! We
hope to update our information via audience
response! The third of three seminars on
objects found locally that give special
insight into the history of Swaledale and
Arkengarthdale is on Saturday 6th July
looking at Medieval Glass Fragments from
Marrick Priory deposited in the Swaledale
Museum by the Rev. Bailey in 1978, and
simply described as ‘Medieval Glass from
Marrick Priory’. The sessions will take
place in the Swaledale Museum, Reeth:
10.30 - 12.30beginning with coffee/tea in
the Museum at 10.30 am followed by
presentations and discussion, and finish at
12.30. Tickets: £10 in advance; (£8 to
SWAAG members and Friends of the
Museum) £12 on the door, includes
admission to the Museum, coffee and tea,
and a reading list. These have been very
popular so do book early! We have
a Programme of Visits working in
conjunction with the Reeth & District
Community Bus. On Saturday 13th July we
will be following up Dr Hope’s tour of Dr
Speirs’s medical bag with a visit to the
York Medical Society. Hidden away in the
heart of York many will have passed this
beautiful building by. Guided by Drs Hope
& Scott we will have the opportunity not
only to see the elegant historic rooms, but
also to see their rare and varied collection
of medical implements. On 10th August we
will be visiting the Lindisfarne Gospels
exhibition in York, and on 7th September
the Earby Museum of Lead Mining near
Skipton with a special guided tour by Dave
Carlisle. Please contact us if you are
interested in joining us on any of these
outings. On 30th July we have the Reeth
and District Community Bus AGM in the
Museum, all welcome. Our Third Great
Annual Tea Party in the Community
Orchard in Reeth is on Saturday 17th
August 3pm-6pm. Please come and support
us and enjoy some tasty delights, we are
sure it will be sunny! Don’t forget that we
are open everyday from 10am until 5pm
except Saturdays until the end of
September. Contact Helen Bainbridge on

GROWING NATIVE PLANTS FOR
LOCAL WILDLIFE PROJECTS.
Native plants grown locally from seed
collected from plants growing locally are
the best possible plants for planting out
in wildlife projects. Would you and others
you know be interested in collecting,
sowing and growing on seeds from plants in
the local area? The basic idea at the
moment is for people to grow small,
manageable quantities of plants at home or
where they have space. The amount and
type of involvement will be up to you and so
long as we can co-ordinate everyone’s
efforts then we should be able to match up
projects with plants. The plants can be
grown for specific projects or for more
general availability and if people are
growing small amounts based on the space
they have available then a project may be
supplied with plants from a number of
different growers. Comprehensive advice,
practical help and demonstrations can be
organised. Depending on the levels of
interest and the number of people wanting
to be involved it may be possible to develop
larger growing projects so if you are keen
on helping to maintain and or enhance
wildlife habitats in the National Park this
may be a way that you can contribute and
it is accessible to everyone of any age and
ability. Funding is likely to be available
from the Parish Wildlife Project fund and
depending on the levels of interest further
funding could also be sought from other
sources. If you are interested please
contact me and we will see what we can
organise. Mark Hewitt Wildlife

NEW WEBSITE SHOWCASES NATIONAL PARK’S NATURAL WORLD Local information on the flora and fauna found in the Yorkshire Dales National Park is now available on a new website. Called ‘Nature in the Dales’, it has been created for anyone interested in wildlife and wildlife conservation in the National Park from visitors and naturalists to professionals and students. And it has already won the praise of TV presenter and environmental campaigner Prof David Bellamy. Nature in the Dales is the website of the Yorkshire Dales Biodiversity Forum. It is hosted by the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority (YDNPA), which also funded the design work, and its content has been written and illustrated by a wide range of organisations and individuals – the very people who love this landscape. The website – at www.natureinthedales.org.uk –showcases local information about 150 of the species and 14 of the habitats found in the special landscape of the National Park accompanied by 300 stunning images. generously donated by local naturalists, landowners, visitors, academics and conservation professionals.
