This time of year I end up feeling tired and generally down. What can I do?

Q:For many, the lack of sunshine, early darkness and overall lower activity at this time of year can bring on seasonal effective disorder

(SAD). These key factors cause a shift in the

production of serotonin, which is activated

by light. Lower levels of Vitamin D from

limited sun exposure and decreased release

of endorphins from less exercise play integral

roles in maintaining balanced emotions

throughout the winter season. What can you

do? Get outside whenever possible. A brief

walk at lunch can kick start hormonal release

and you may even catch some rays. Some

key supplements to consider are Vitamin D

(at least 1000 IU a day), 5-HTP to increase

serotonin, omega oils to feed your brain, and

Relora to reduce levels of cortisol. These tips

should have you feeling renewed in no time!

Supplement | 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP)5-HTP is an amino acid that is the intermediate step between tryptophan and the important brain chemical serotonin. When our brains aren’t producing enough serotonin, we may experience depression, suffer from obesity or insomnia, or otherwise function at less than our mental and physical peak. Studies have shown that 5-HTP may be effective at raising serotonin levels and decreasing the symptoms that are asso-ciated with low levels of serotonin. 5-HTP has been shown to be safer than prescription drugs for treating conditions such as depression, Seasonal Affective Disorder and insomnia.

Almost everyone takes the ability to get a healthy breath of air for granted. However, there are those people who suffer from asthma, sinusitis, bronchitis, and other lung and respiratory tract illnesses that greatly appreciate even a simple breath of air.

A key factor in lung and respiratory health is the elasticity and fluidity of respira-tory tract secretions. A respiratory tract containing mucus that is too thick will not function efficiently, resulting in blocked airways and difficulty breathing. Fortu-nately there are natural options for maintaining lung and respiratory health.

N-Acetyl L-Cysteine:This is a derivative of the common amino acid cysteine. It is useful because it splits the sulphur linkages of mucoproteins, which in turn reduces the thickness of bronchial and lung secretions.

Mullein Leaf:Mullein is a common weed that can be found practically anywhere. While a nuisance to gardeners, mullein is especially useful to herbalists because of its ability to relieve dry, irritating chest coughs and chest congestion.

Bromelain:Refers to a group of sulphur containing enzymes that function to digest protein. These enzymes are taken from the pineapple plant and are shown to be particu-larly efficient when it comes to clearing airways, suppressing coughs, and reduc-ing the thickness of lung and bronchial secretions.

Ivy Extract:Several double blind studies have shown that ivy extract improves lung func-tions and reduces the chances of asthma attacks.

All of these helpful options can be found in Natural Factors Lung, Bronchial and Sinus Health supplement. The proprietary blend of N-Acetyl L-Cysteine, Bromelain, Marshmallow Root, Mullein extract, Cherry Bark extract, Horehound extract, and Ivy extract, works to reduce lung and bronchial secretions and the probability of asthma attacks.

The demands on our time and bodies are greater than they have ever been, be it from overwork, extracurricular activities, environmental factors, lack of sleep, or poor nutrition. This has led to an increase in cancer, disease, premature aging, allergies and inability to cope with the various forms of stress that surround us. It is becoming common practice to treat health concerns and ailments with a quick fix, be it through supplements or medications, rather than dealing with the root causes or adopting appropriate practices for true long-term health.

The word health is thrown around quite freely these days. If we all had a high level of health, we would all be at our ideal body weight, none of us would have food cravings, we would all sleep soundly, we wouldn’t rely on stimulating foods to give us energy, and we would be able to think more clearly and rationally. Yet, few of us are in this situation. One of the reasons is because we often treat the symptoms of each ailment as it crops up, while ignoring its cause. The reality is we all have the ability to take our health into our own hands and by doing so live a high-energy, sickness-free, rewarding life.

Diet over Symptom TreatingThe key to long term results is getting to the root of the matter. Symptom-treating programs have risen in popularity over the past several years because of the speed at which results can be seen, and treating symptoms has become the accepted approach for many. While it’s true that short-term results can be achieved by dealing merely with the symptoms, long-term sustainable satisfaction is rarely if ever achieved. It is a healthy, well-balanced diet, with a focus on long-term sustainability that will pay dividends.

Those who eat a healthier diet are healthier: They are close to their ideal body weight, they have more energy and more motivation, and quite simply, they get more out of life. Such a diet may not produce noticeable results as quickly as some symptom-treating methods, however, it will drive long-term success.

What is a “healthy diet”? There are so many dietary fads out there it can sometimes be hard to tell. Simply put, it is a diet consist-ing primarily of whole foods. That is to say, foods that have not been overly refined, processed or altered from their natural state. These foods provide nutrient dense nutrition in perfect balance - everything that our body needs to function and regenerate optimally. The cornerstone of your diet should become raw, alkalizing, enzyme intact, living foods. These are high net-gain foods that leave your body with large amounts of useable energy for repair and function after subtracting the energy used by your body to break them down. This would include raw plant-based foods, nuts and seeds, legumes, fruit and some grains. In particular it is important to get foods that are high in chlorophyll which is alkalinizing, cleanses the body and is regenerative.

My favourite sources are hemp, an algae called chlorella, and leafy green vegetables, all of which are also high in amino acids. Your diet should include sufficient amounts of essential fatty acids, especially the elusive omega 3s which can be found in flax and hemp. Another food worth mention-ing when discussing long-term health is maca. This is a root vegetable from Peru which is known for its hormone regulating properties. Hormone imbalance is common as we age and maca does a great job at keeping our body functioning in balance, the way it is meant to.

My schedule is pretty demanding so it can be difficult to find the time to make elaborate meals. I find that the easiest way for me to get all those foods in my body with my hectic lifestyle is by regularly taking a whole food shake or smoothie. It's easy to pack nutrients into liquid form, which improves absorption and requires less energy to digest. The key to a successful diet is that it must be easy to follow and stick to. I believe that strictly imposed parameters, though they may work for some people in the short term, are not the way to long-term success. A diet works best when it becomes a way of life, more of a philosophy than a program. To me, blindly following a strict program is not a mentally healthy way to seek health.

Long-term Benefits It’s that simple. By eating more whole, high net-gain foods, your energy will rise, body fat will decrease, mental clarity will be enhanced, and cravings for refined foods will fade along with many of the nagging symptoms that have lingered.

Here are a few long-term results that you can expect from consuming a healthy whole food diet:

☺ improved ability to burn body fat as energy☺ better sleep quality, therefore less needed☺ elimination of junk-food cravings☺ reduced body-fat percentage☺ less joint inflammation☺ improved mental clarity☺ eliminates need to rely on stimulants for energy☺ improved ability to build lean muscle tissue☺ quick recovery from exercise☺ reduced cholesterol level☺ stronger bones☺ better skin quality

Naturally, our stomachs are very acidic, and must be in order to properly digest our food. If the stomach becomes decreasingly acidic, its ability to digest food will become compromised, resulting in conditions like heartburn. Many people choose to take antacids to combat the unpleasant symptoms of heartburn, not realizing that antacids lower the acidity level in the stomach, thus extending the problem. Stomach acid facilitates the absorption of nutri-ents from our food, and the calcium carbonate found in antacids reduces the stomach’s acidity and hinders the absorption of important minerals like calcium and magnesium. When antacids are used regularly, the internal balance of acid in the stomach is disturbed, which results in the stomach producing more acid regularly to compensate. This excess acid results in more frequent symptoms of heartburn.

Not only do antacids prolong heartburn and its symptoms, they can also have a very negative effect on our bones and joints. Most antacids contain a com-pound called aluminum hydroxide which reacts to the phosphorus that is found in many of the foods that we eat on a daily basis. The aluminum from the antacids bonds with the phosphorus to create a solid compound that is not digested, but simply passed in the stool. As a result, the phosphorus is not absorbed into the blood stream as it usually would be. In reaction to the decreased levels of phosphorus in the blood, our body sends messages to pull stored phosphorus from our bones and joints. Next to calcium, phosphorus is the most abundant mineral in our body, and the two work together to form strong bones and teeth. Phosphorus helps to filter waste out of the kidneys, plays an essential role in storing energy, and reduces muscle pain after physi-cal activity. It is also needed for the creation, growth, and maintenance of cells and tissues, and for the creation of DNA and RNA. Phosphorus is found in many of the foods we consume on a daily basis, including dairy products, grains, and protein rich foods. Taking antacids regularly can result in signifi-cantly less phosphorus in the body, which can trigger symptoms such as anxi-ety, loss of appetite, bone loss, stiff and painful joints, and poor dental health.

Instead of resorting to prescription or over-the-counter antacids, try a natural solution to heartburn and indigestion. First and foremost, it is important to be aware of the foods that may cause an increase in stomach acidity. Some foods to be aware of are citrus fruits and juices, chocolate, pep-permint, alcohol, tomatoes, and caffeinated beverages such as coffee and cola. Try to have these items in moderation, and never before bed.

Additionally, deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) is a great natural option that is available in capsules or chewable tablets.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), also known as winter depression or winter blues, is a mood disorder in which people who have normal mental health throughout most of the year experience depressive symptoms in the winter or, less frequently, in the summer, spring or autumn seasons. Some people experience a serious mood change when the seasons shift. They may sleep too much, have little energy, and may also feel depressed. Though symptoms can be severe, they usually clear up without the need of outside aid. For some, the conditions can remain in the summer. This is often referred to as Reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder, and can also include heightened anxiety, and levels of stress.

Symptoms of SAD vary but for many include either one or all of the following; difficulty waking up in the morning, morning sickness, tendency to oversleep as well as to overeat -and especially a craving for carbohydrates, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating on completing tasks, and withdrawal from friends, family, and social activities. All of this can lead to depression, pessimistic feelings of hopeless-ness, and lack of pleasure which characterize a person suffering from this disorder. People who experience summer SAD (spring and summer depression) show symp-toms of classic depression including insomnia, anxiety, irritability, decreased appetite, weight loss, social withdrawal, and a decreased sex drive.

Seasonal mood variations are believed to be influenced by light, therefore showing that they are related to a lack of serotonin production and increased melatonin which is produced in dim light and darkness by the pineal gland. This makes sense since our exposure to daylight during the winter months is quite drastically decreased.

Symptoms can usually be dampened or extinguished by exercise and increased outdoor activity particularly on sunny days, with the use of a SAD lamp, and with supplementation. Helpful supplements include the following:

Fish Oils: Have been called “food for the brain” for many years and recent research is proving how. Cell membranes are made up partly of omega-3’s. It is possible that increasing the omega-3 levels makes it easier for serotonin – a chemical that carries messages from one brain cell to another – to pass through cell membranes.

5-HTP: 5-Hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) is an amino acid that is the intermediate step between tryptophan and the important brain chemical serotonin. Since 5-HTP is not present in significant amounts in a typical diet, taking a supplemental form can be very beneficial. The human body manufactures 5-HTP from L-tryptophan, a natural amino acid found in most dietary proteins.

Relora: Relora contains Phellodendron amurense and Magnolia officinalis, and works with your body’s hormones. It helps reduce levels of cortisol and increase levels of DHEA, which help regulate the stress response in our systems.

SAMe: SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine), a compound naturally occurring in the body, is a critical component of many biochemical reactions, including those that affect brain biochemistry and joint health. It is also necessary for the synthesis of neurotransmit-ters, playing an integral role in mood regulation.

There is no need to get the winter blues this season. Come visit us at any of our locations and see how we can help.

If you are feeling signs of depression it is advised to seek advice from a doctor as diagnoses might be helpful.

Food irradiation is the process of exposing food to gamma radiation for the intended purpose of killing small amounts of insects, fungi or bacteria. Lesser doses of the radiation are used to prevent potatoes or onions from sprouting or to delay the ripening of certain fruits. Irradiation can increase the storage life of some foods, allowing importers and distributors to ship foods further. All great reasons right? Not really!

Irradiation comes with a growing list of health concerns. It allows for foods to be transported thousands of miles to consumers in all corners of the world. For this to be feasible the foods must be shipped unripe, which often results in the food never reaching the nutrient potential it would have if allowed to ripen naturally. Although consumers are eating fruits and vegetables, they may not be gaining the full nutritional benefit of the food, while at the same time consuming amounts of radiation for which the side effects are unknown. Irradiation is used in an attempt to eliminate bacteria that have been present in our foods for centuries and have been effectively regulated through the use of proper farming techniques. Adding radiation to our foods is not only unnecessary it is potentially dangerous. Health Canada claims that irradiation is safe; however there is still much debate and research that sheds light on the possibility of long term health risks and potential degradation of the food supply.

Irrational Irradiation!

Sources: www.mercola.com, www.naturalnews.com, www.labelgmos.org, http://uw-food-irradiation.engr.wisc.edu/Facts.html

Chemical by-products called “unique radiolytic products” (URPs) are created when foods are irradiated. Scientific studies conducted on URPs have linked serious health risks with the consumption of irradiated foods.

Irradiated foods are less nutritious than fresh foods because the radiation damages the vitamins, amino acids and fatty acids that are naturally present.

According to the Organic Consumers Association, irradiation damages molecules and digestive enzymes in foods and creates free radicals, leading to the destruction of as much as 80% of the naturally occurring vitamins. The radioactive particles can combine with exist-ing chemicals in foods, include pesticide residue and create URPSs, which include toxins such as benzene, and formaldehyde.

Irradiation has been hailed as an alternative to pesticides. However, because irradiation takes place after the harvest and the majority of pesticides are used in the field, there is little strength to this claim. Additionally, there have been no studies conducted to determine the consequences of irradiating the pesticide residues commonly found in foods.

Irradiation will not replace many additives commonly used in processed foods. In fact, additional additives need to be used in combination with irradiation to control undesirable side-effects.

Irradiation of poultry is being proposed as a means for preventing salmonella food poison-ing. Interestingly enough, less than 20% of salmonella poisoning cases can be traced back to poultry, but instead are linked to factory farming waste. A more effective solution to salmo-nella poisoning is educating consumers about proper storage, handling, and cooking of all foods which may carry the salmonella bacteria.

Irradiation can actually cause food poisoning since treated foods may be contaminated but appear fresh. Microorganisms which normally cause meat to look or smell spoiled may be killed by irradiation, yet hardier bacteria, such as the one causing botulism food poisoning, may survive. Some organisms may even mutate when irradiated, forming new, more radiation-resistant strains.

Increased use of food irradiation will amplify occupational and environmental hazards. The amount of gamma radiation inside an operating irradiation facility is anywhere from tens to hundreds of times as much as the amount that would kill a human in a single short exposure. Additionally, the gamma source for irradiation must be replaced regularly, meaning, the risk of transportation accidents increases with time. Spent gamma sources become radioactive waste and there is still no acceptable method of long-term radioactive waste management.

Health Canada currently permits irradiated potatoes, onions, wheat, spices, and dehydrated seasonings to be sold in Canada. Additionally, Health Canada has been proposing to amend current regulations to include irradiated poultry, ground beef, some seafood, and mangos.

The real cause of heart disease, and what to do about it. By Jolie Root LPN, LNC

What about Organic Produce? (continued from previous page)Organic produce is spared the nutrient-depleting process of irradiation. Organic produce is also proven to con-tain higher levels of vitamins and may also contain less bacterial contaminants as compared to conventional produce. According to government legislation, organic farms must use alternative food safety measures like manure sourced from organic farms, crop rotation and an outright ban on the use of “sewage sludge,” which is not mandatory for conventional farms. These alternative safety measures and full organic production reduce the amount of food-borne pathogens found in crops, while increasing helpful bacteria and overall nourishment.

How can I tell if food has been irradiated?Pre-packaged foods that have been wholly irradiated display the international radiation symbol, along with a statement explaining that the product has been irradiated. Food that is not pre-packaged must have a sign with this information displayed beside the food. Pre-packaged foods that contain an irradiated ingredient which is more than 10% of the finished product must indicate in the list of ingredients that the component is irradiated. If the ingredient makes up less than 10% of the finished product, it is exempt from the labeling requirements.

Nutrient deficiencies, not dietary cholesterol, are the true culprits behind heart disease. Heart disease is not just a disease of excess (too much cholesterol, salt, etc.); it’s primarily a disease of deficiency. Ever wonder why cholesterol lowering drugs have failed to eradicate heart disease? Heart disease is still the number one cause of death in our culture. This is why: Choles-terol and blood pressure drugs do not address the deficiency issues. For starters, these drugs deplete Co-Q10, a vital nutrient for your heart. And they fail to address the poor diet that really is the cause of most of our chronic health problems.

Here’s the bottom line: Nutrient deficiencies permit oxidative stress to injure the arteries. The risk is greatest if you have dangerously inadequate levels of protective nutrients like the B, C and E vitamins, folic acid, Co-Q10, essential fatty acids and important antioxidants. When nutrient levels are low, plaque begins to form, inflammation sets in and once your coronary artery is closed off, you have a heart attack. Sometimes this is the first sign that something is wrong. The answer? Change our dietary habits and follow a well designed supplement regimen.

There are many simple things that you can do to reduce your heart disease risk. Take these steps immediately if your cholesterol, homocysteine or C reactive protein is running high:

Eat “good fats” every day. These include the monounsaturated fat in olive oil and the heart friendly Omega-3 fats in cold-water fish like salmon, sardines, mackerel, and tuna.

Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables for dietary fiber. Have them at every meal. Eat a variety of different vegetables for best results. Vegetables provide potent antioxidants and soluble fiber, which is very effective at reducing serum cholesterol levels and controlling insulin.

Eat only whole-grain foods - again to increase fiber. Cut out white flour products. Oatmeal, All Bran, and oat bran are healthy high fiber foods, and so are ground flax or chia seeds.

Take a potent multi-vitamin. A one a day just won’t cut it. You want high levels of antioxidants including heart protecting vitamin E, vitamin C, magnesium, and Co-Q10 everyday.

Take Fish oils. Fish oils can reduce your risk of sudden death from heart attack by 90%! EPA and DHA raise HDL, reduce triglycerides, blood pressure and inflammation, and they relax and open your arteries.

Measure your vitamin D levels. Low serum vitamin D levels have been associated with obesity, insulin resistance and high blood pressure. A Harvard study found that men who had serum levels of 37.5 nmol/L had twice the risk of heart attack than men whose levels were at a more desirable 75 nmol/L

Exercise, preferably every day, using a combination of cardiovascular exercise such as walking and light weightlifting to tone muscles and strengthen bones. Exercise boosts mood, raises HDL and lowers blood pressure.

Special labels are required on irradiated foods, including the international symbol of irradiation, known as a “radura”, and a statement indicating that the food was treated with irradiation. LOOK FOR THIS SYMBOL TO AVOID IRRADIATED FOODS

Alzheimer’s disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disease that slowly destroys memory and thinking ability. Eventually it even takes away the ability to perform the simplest tasks. At this point in time, scientists do not know the exact cause of Alzheimer’s disease or how to stop its progression. They have, however, discerned that Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging, affects both men and women, is more common in people as they age, and is not caused by hardening of the arteries or stress.

Mind Management – Alzheimer’s

Tips to Maintain Brain Health:

Regular Exercise: According to the Alzheimer’s Research and Prevention Center, physical activity can reduce your rate of developing Alzheimer’s by up to fifty percent. Regular exercise can also help to slow deterioration for those who have started to develop cognitive problems.

Healthy Diet: Focus on eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats. Try following a diet that is rich in fish, nuts, whole grains, olive oil, and abundant fresh produce. As a treat, drink a glass of red wine or eat a square or two of dark chocolate. Avoid intaking trans and saturated fats and instead choose healthy fats like omega 3s and omega 6s. There is some evidence that suggests that omega 3 fatty acids may help to prevent Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Omega 3s are found in fish like salmon, trout, cod, mackerel and sardines, and can be easily supplemented with a cold water fish oil, like Cod Liver Oil. Empha-size eating across the rainbow. A diet rich in colourful fruits and vegetables will maximize antioxidant and vitamin intake. Try exchanging coffee for teas like oolong, green and white, which have been shown to be particularly beneficial for brain function. Drinking 2-4 cups daily has proven benefits.

Supplements: Look for folic acid, vitamin B12, vitamin D, magnesium, and fish oil. Vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, co-Q10 and turmeric.

Mental Stimulation: Activities involving multiple tasks or communication, interaction, and organization offer the greatest protection for brain function. Try learning something new, like a language or a musical instrument, practice memorization, play strategy games, puzzles and riddles, and try to follow the road less travelled – drive a different route, complete a task with your less dominant hand, and try to vary your habits.

Quality Sleep: The brain needs quality restful sleep in order to function at optimal capacity. Sleep deprivation impairs the ability to think, reason, problem solve, and recall information. Try to establish a regular sleep schedule, and be mindful of taking naps too regularly. Although naps can recharge the system, they can also make insomnia worse. Create a relaxing bedtime ritual, whether it is taking a bath, writing in a journal, or dimming the lights.

Stress Management: Chronic or severe stress can take a significant toll on the brain, leading to shrinkage of key memory areas. Remember to breathe, as heightened breathing rates can affect oxygen levels to the brain.

An Active Social Life: Studies have shown that isolation is difficult for our brains, and that the more connected humans are, the better their memories and brain functions. If you want to increase your social activities, try volunteering, take a course at a local college, make weekly dates with friends, or join classes at a community center.

Ingredients• 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil• 1 small organic butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cubed• 2 large, organic sweet carrots, peeled and cut into chunks• 1 large organic parsnip, peeled and cut into chunks• 1 small organic turnip, peeled and cut into chunks• 1 large cooking onion, peeled and cut into rings• 1 head of garlic, loose skins removed and tops cut off• 1 medium organic rutabaga, peeled and cut into chunks• 4 small organic red potatoes, scrubbed and cut into chunks• 1 large organic sweet potato, peeled and cut into chunks• Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper• 3 bay leaves• 8 cups organic stock, either chicken or vegetable• Several fresh organic basil leaves• 1 cup fresh chopped organic cilantro• 1 tsp dried organic thyme• 1 tsp organic rosemary, fresh if possible

Preparation1. Preheat oven to 325°F / 163°C. Pour half of the olive oil into the bottom of a roasting pan. Place all vegetables in the roasting pan and coat with remain-ing olive oil. Sprinkle with sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Toss bay leaves on top.

2. Cover vegetables with a layer of parchment and place in the oven for 30 minutes. Then remove parchment paper from the vegetables and let roast for another 30 minutes. You will have to mix the veggies occasionally to roast them all properly.

3. Remove vegetables from oven. Remove any black bits and bay leaves, squeeze garlic out of its skin, and purée roasted vegetables in batches in a food processor or blender. Use the stock to help the process along; adding a cup of stock will make the blending easier.

4. Place all puréed vegetables in a large soup pan or Dutch oven and set over low heat on the stove. Add remaining stock, basil, cilantro, thyme and rose-mary.

5. Bring soup to a gentle simmer and adjust seasonings. If you find the soup too thick, simply stir in more stock and reheat. Serve in heated bowls with a sprig of rosemary or chives on each bowl for garnish.

Are you taking calcium or vitamin D to keep your bones strong? If so, I’ve got some good news and some bad news for you. Let’s dispense with the bad news right away. In April 2011 nutrition researchers showed – for the third time – that women who take calcium supplements, with or without vitamin D, experience about 20% more heart attacks and strokes than women who don’t take calcium. Ugh. Millions of women take these supplements because they are proven to increase bone mineral density and lower osteoporosis and hip fracture risk. However, it seems that a portion of the added calcium that doesn’t reach our bones winds up clogging arteries, leading to heart disease. That’s the bad news.

The good news is that other research has recently identified a nutrient that can safely guide calcium into bones and teeth, where we need it, while keeping the mineral out of arteries, and even clear away pre-existing arterial calcium depos-its. This is the action of vitamin K2, a long misunderstood fat-soluble vitamin that works with vitamin D to put calcium in its place. If you are concerned about bone health, heart health, fertility, children’s health or just being healthy in general, understanding vitamin K2 provides a key piece to the nutritional puzzle of many health concerns.

Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox: How A Little Known Vitamin Could Save Your Life (Wiley & Sons, 2012) is the first complete guide to a new essential nutrient that was overlooked for 70 years, due to a case of mistaken identity. This book is not just for calcium and vitamin D takers and definitely not just for women. In 2007 researchers declared that most “apparently healthy” people are deficient in vitamin K2 to some degree and this is taking its toll in the form of heart disease, osteoporosis, cancer, diabetes, tooth decay and many other preventable health conditions.

Vitamin K2 was once abundant in our diets. Back when animals grazed on pas-ture, foods like eggs and butter were brimming with vitamin K2. As factory farm-ing took over and animals were gradually removed from the pasture, vitamin K2 levels plummeted and deficiency crept in. Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox explains how to get K2 back onto our plates and into our bodies. It reveals which delicious “sin” foods are rich in heart healthy K2, which unusual food is the only source of K2 for vegans and how to choose among the growing number of K2 supplements on the market. Vitamin K2 and the Calcium Paradox: How A Little Known Vitamin Could Save Your Life is available at Nature’s Fare.

With the winter months upon us, it is important to be prepared and stock up on items to help prevent and fight a nasty cold or flu. Here’s a quick look at some of Mother Nature’s best cold and flu-busting ingredients that soothe and protect us – all year round.

Honey From Egyptian pharaohs to Queen Bees, everyone loves honey! It’s not only sweet and yummy; honey contains anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agents that are effective against bacterial strains including those that have become resistant to synthetic antibiotics. Even the world-famous Mayo Clinic believes in the power of honey, calling it a “time-honoured way to soothe a sore throat; an effective cough suppressant… to reduce night time coughing and improve sleep.”

Lemon As one of the most popular members of the citrus family, lemons have been revered in many traditional cultures as a medicinal tonic imbued with wonderful (even magical!) heal-ing powers. Entire books are dedicated to lemons within Spanish culture. Lemon juice is not only a powerful antioxidant; it is also recognized for its antiseptic and antibacterial proper-ties. Its excellent cleansing action supports lemon’s traditional use in battling colds, flu, fevers and infections that develop in the chest.

Echinacea This lovely cone-shaped, purple flower is one of the all-time most studied herbal medicines in the world. Standardized extracts of Echinacea purpurea are well-researched and scien-tifically documented herbal cold and flu fighters. Studies have shown echinacea to reduce the severity and duration of cold symptoms while speeding recovery.

Elderberry Ask any European about elderberry and they will probably regale you with a wide range of enchanting stories about the power of this beautiful berry. From wine to tonics, elderberries are a traditional medicinal in many European cultures. Most recently the effectiveness of elderberry to prevent colds and flu is on the radar. Scientists postulate that flavonoid antioxi-dants in elderberry extract stimulate the immune system while their anthocyanins, another kind of antioxidant, have anti-inflammatory effects that keep aches, pains, and fevers in check.

GingerEvery Asian culture uses ginger as one of their foundational culinary spices. Ginger not only adds a spicy kick to everything from stir-fry veggies to ginger snaps; it’s also a concentrated source of various medicinal compounds that have been shown to successfully treat common colds, fever and more. Studies show that this pungent root is the ideal cold fighter because of its remarkable sleep-inducing, analgesic (pain-relieving), anti-tussive (cough suppressive), and antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties.

Lemon BalmThe very name says it all. But this soothing balm of an herb is also proving to be one of the most promising herbal medicines of this decade. A study recently published in the journal Food Microbiology refers to lemon balm as having “effective antimicrobial activity.” Another study, published in Phytomedicine concluded that lemon balm has aantiviral effect on herpes (cold sores). Fighting colds is only one of the great things about lemon balm. Sooth-ing anxiety and promoting a calming sleep is the more traditional use for this lovely mint-like plant with a lemony taste.

Vitamins C & D and the Mineral ZincThis well-documented trio of immune-supporting supplements is the perfect nutritional arse-nal to successfully combat colds and flu. Choose only the most well absorbed sources: buffered vitamin C from calcium ascorbate; vitamin D3, the only form of vitamin D that our body recognizes as the true “sunshine vitamin”; and zinc from zinc citrate, one of the most readily absorbed and easy-to-digest forms

Dose yourself and your family with these natural remedies and replace the need for the pharmaceutically-based artificial hot lemon & honey drink mixes.

Many people with arthritis and other joint conditions claim that their joint pain worsens in the colder months. Many factors such as decreased circulation, less physical activity and changes in barometric pressure may contribute to the increased discomfort.

During colder months the body attempts to stay warmer by circulating less blood to peripheral areas as a way to conserve warm blood in the body’s core. As a result, joints become stiffer and often lead to increased discomfort. Along with the decrease in circulation, the skin also gets colder in the winter. When the skin is colder, pain sensors become more sensitive, which is why there is an increase in pain. Try to keep your body temperature up by setting the thermostat to a comfort-able temperature when indoors, staying covered with a blanket when sedentary, dressing in extra layers, and keeping hands, feet and head covered when outdoors.

If you are not a lover of winter activities, then it is most likely that you are less physi-cally active during the winter months. The decrease in activity can cause muscle weakness, decreased circulation and overall stiffness. It is recommended to try and find indoor activities to get you moving: join a gym, take a yoga class, increase in home exercise. Also, many local arenas, malls and recreation centre host indoor walking programs to both keep you active and indoors.

Another culprit appears to be changes in the barometric, or air pressure, with stud-ies confirming that a drop in pressure is a factor in arthritic joint pain. It is believed that as air pressure gets lower and there is less atmospheric pressure holding back the soft tissue that surrounds the joints, any existing inflamed tissue in and around joints will expand to fill that space. If there are nerves in that tissue, they would be stimulated by the swelling, which would cause increased pain.

Keep joint pain at a minimum this winter, stay active, keep warm and remember that spring is just around the corner!

With New Year resolutions in full swing we can be guaranteed to see a rush of individuals looking for a lifestyle change for better Health & Wellness. A great vision but unfortunately we all know that many do not succeed in maintaining this vision. I could comment on inspiring tips to keep you active and help motivate you towards a healthier 2012. But, I feel the fuzzy words and the positive reading will end up in one ear and out the other! Quickly the photo on the fridge of your new, inspiring physique will be covered by to-do lists and your next order form from your child’s school. WHOA Batman… isn’t that a bit frustrating? Why is this acceptable? Why is starting new every year something that is normal and overlooked? Yes, it is called a lifestyle! Something you must do everyday to maintain! But what is forgotten is your acceptance of failure! Who cares if you ate two bowls of ice cream on a Sunday night watching your favorite TV show! It is what you do then and there… the next hour….the next day…the next week! That failure will happen and it will continue to happen every week, every month and every year but it is what you do AFTER that failure that matters! It is not about giving up and going back into your bad habits. Those negative thoughts spiral into more ice cream and missed workouts. It is about laughing and knowing those two bowls of ice cream will NOT get you closer to your goals but you move on and make that next meal or workout the best you can! Accept that there will be times you “fail” and miss a workout or eat chocolate but it doesn’t matter because the overall lifestyle is pretty impressive! You accept your failure!

Every single person who takes on this New Year vision will succeed as far as they are willing to take themselves. But the people who realize that this healthy lifestyle will also bring failure are the ones that will truly inspire themselves! You are the ones who will be continuing your healthier lifestyle next year instead of starting over.

We can see the person we want to be (fitter, more energy, a healthy glow) and the path to get there (eat better, exercise regularly, reduce stress)…but frequently we get sidetracked. Why? Because change is hard! Changing our everyday habits can seem very overwhelming, especially at the very beginning.

There are many obstacles that can stand in front of us, and the one I hear all the time is, “I want to change my diet, but my husband/wife/partner/family keep pulling me off track”. Sorry, that's no excuse. Creating a healthy diet doesn’t need to be difficult and it isn’t something you are “on” for a few weeks at a time.

Let's just throw away the word "diet" - eating healthy is a way of life, and you CAN work around your family’s eating habits!

How? Try this:

1. Stop thinking your diet is either on or off, black or white – A healthy lifestyle lives in the “grey”, it doesn’t need to be 100% perfect to be healthy. A treat in the morning is no excuse to eat junk food all day!

2. Change the meals you eat alone FIRST! – Dinner (the meal most of us share with our family) is only one meal of the day…what about the other 2 meals and snacks? A healthy lifestyle can be created without ever touching dinner! Plus, dinner tends to be the healthiest meal of the day for many of us as most of our eating pitfalls happen in other meals and snacks.

3. Eat consciously, whatever you’re eating – Sit down, relax, and enjoy your meal…no matter what it is you’re eating. A meal eaten consciously is healthier than a meal eaten on the run, no matter the quality of the food. Plus, it’s impossible to overeat while eating consciously (try it, I can guarantee you’ll be too bored to eat too much). Sit quietly, relax, chew well, and ENJOY what you’re eating! There’s no prize for finishing your meal first…well, except if you count indigestion.

Your ideal way of eating can’t be found in a book and it won’t be the same as your neighbour. We are all unique, and it makes sense that what our body needs for fuel is also unique. When you find YOUR healthy lifestyle you feel great, are full of energy, and you don’t feel deprived or hungry. You just feel good!

In my practice as a Holistic Nutritionist, I’ve seen many people make dramatic changes to their diet and lifestyle…and happily without too much difficulty. Together we have a plan as to how they’ll reach their dietary goals, and we work through it step by step. Within a few months their energy is up, they’re feeling great, and they’re still right on track!

Take a few minutes to imagine yourself 4 months from now. How do you want to feel? Do you want to feel energetic? Full of life? Fit and strong?

By making a commitment to yourself and by making a few changes to your diet and lifestyle, you could be well on your way to health goals. Do you feel sluggish? Do you spend your day on a blood sugar rollercoaster, feeling your energy and mood go up and down all day? Do you suffer from frustrating digestive symptoms like heartburn, bloating, pain, or gas that take a toll on you everyday? Make 2012 your year to regain your health! It’s easier than you think!
