Let me suggest that you could start by playing the doctor.

A new job has its challenges and its opportunities. They have to be identified and the overall situation understood, before you can act and lead your team.

The doctor role, helps you to diagnose the situation.

You can have one on ones

You can meet informal groups(and in formal groups)

The new job can get hectic, so it would be nicer if there were 2 of you ..

One of you would play the doctor. Diagnosing the situation.

Figuring out what needs to be done.

The other one would be –The eager student!

.. For there is much to learn.

there is much to learn!

Traditionally every new leader gets a 100 day honeymoon period.

This is the time, when you can ask stupid questions, and change your mind often and generally say ‘no!’ (without people taking too much offence).

Most doors are also open, to welcome you in!

Use the first half of this time, to learn and diagnose ..

Then decide where you want your team to arrive!

Have I been rushing, with no time to

reflect or strategize?

Have I included my immediate team and my boss, in where I

want us to go?

Am I trying to please someone or trying to

be popular?

Am I caught in analysis-paralysis? Am I in love with

being the doctor or the eager student?

Deciding the destination?

Your team needs to know, you mean business,about where the team needs to arrive!

Then use the balance time in action!

Your team also needs to know that you mean them well and you are going to be there for them, when they need help.

That is why you need to be able to play Mom.

The role of a Mom, that is!

Without falling into the stereotype –

There is a mom and there is a dad in each of us. You need to allow both to emerge from within you.

You need to play Dad to your team, because you will be leading them in the right direction. It is your job to now show this to them where they need to go and what constitutes success.

Show them, that you are serious about this intent. Do this often. One round of communications is completely insufficient.

Follow him!

both Mom and Dad need to be done, in a deliberate fashion ..

Even though you will be hugely rushed for time, with many fires burning brightly around you ..

If you do your Mom bit and Dad bits right – the fires will take care of themselves.

That is one way, to settle in, into your new job!

In 100 days -

First play Doctor & Eager Student

Then decide where your team needs to arrive ..

Then take them there, by playing, Mom & Dad!
