Radiating Cables
Radiating Cables
allow the use of radio communication in confined areas where other antenna systems get to their limits
provide homogeneous and continuous radio coverage inside a well defined space [“confined area”]
have very long lifetime and so increase MTBF of the whole system
achieve low TCO by reducing the number of necessary devices (Amplifiers, Repeaters, Access Points, Antennas, Cables)
are able to transmit multiple frequencies and so reduce the number of components and complexity in a system.
do not amplify the signal and so are allowed to be used in hazardous areas

Radiating cables vs. Antennas
Antennas send from a single point
A Radiating Cable sends along its length
Radiating Cables provide homogeneous radio coverage in confined areas
where walls (in tunnel), corners, rails etc. restrict the free Line Of Sight
communication.
Radio waves pass through the cable.
Each slot builds a small ‚antenna‘ that
sends and receives the signals.

Radiating cables vs. Antennas
The signal from the Radiating Cable reaches the receiver on the vehicle along its way without obstacle
The vehicle blocks the signal of the directional antenna

Olaf Schilperoort
Radiating cables vs. Antennas
In tunnels and around corners, many directional antennas and repeaters are required.
Simultaneous P2P and P2C communication is a challenge.
One single Radiating Cable can
cover the whole corner +
reduce the number of repeaters
Innovation & Tradition
Product presentation EUCARAY®
Olaf Schilperoort
Radiating cables vs. Antennas
• Each antenna needs its own Rx/Tx unit (AP, Repeater, Amplifer…)
• High no. Of active devices (power cables, Ethernet cables etc.)
• Vice versa: homogeneous coverage requires high density of antennas
• Inhomogeneous coverage seen by receiving devices (Smartphones) tend to group around sender
• Radiating Cables provide homogeneous coverage along ist whole length

Single point antenna: human bodies or other obstacles block or deteriorate signal
unpredictable and inhomogeneous coverage, bad user experience
Radiating Cable: direct Line Of Sight connection provides full signal quality to any
place in the wagon, very good user experience
• A train wagon is a challenging environment for radio transmission
• Human bodies attenuate or even block electromagnetic waves
• Walls, luggage, seats etc. additionally make it more complicated
• Moving passengers and changing seat occupancy make it unpredictable
• MiMo improves the situation also for single point antennas
• The optimal solution is to provide homogeneous and LOS coverage at any point of the wagon

MiMo Communication - Basics
MiMo means Multiple Input – Multiple Output
Two or more active sender modules send the same information via
different paths towards the receiver.
The multiple signals arrive at the receivers at different times in different phases, depending on the different paths they take. Some signals will be direct, others via multiple different paths. With this spacial multiplexing, each signal is unique as defined by the characteristics of
the path it takes.

MiMo Communication with reflections
For optimal function, MiMo requires a reflective environment that enables the signals to use multiple paths towards the receiver.
The receiver profits from multiple received signals with different path signatures.
Tunnels are ideal for use of MiMo
The receiver with
direct line of sight
also needs
reflected signals
with different
path signatures.
With reflected
signals, receivers
with no direct line
of sight profit
from MiMo too.

Case Study Øresund Link, Sweden/Denmark
Situation 1. The Øresund Link connects the regions of Scania (Sweden) and Zealand (Denmark) and comprises a combined bridge and tunnels complex. The bridge (7.8 Km) is the world’s strongest twodeck cable stay bridge, built to carry a 2 x 2 motorway and two railway tracks. 2. The Drogden tunnel (on the Danish side) (4 Km) is the world’s largest undersea tunnel, in terms of volume, with five parallel tunnel tubes. 3. Peberholm (4 Km) is the artificial island linking the bridge with the tunnel, and was constructed by means of the dredged material from the seabed - 6 million m3 of sand and 1.6 million m3 of stones. The artificial peninsula at Kastrup accommodates the tunnel portal. Also, the Lernacken tunnel (on the Swedish side) is a small 700 m tunnel for railway only.

The "Storm-water Management and Road Tunnel" or "SMART Tunnel", E 38 is a storm drainage and road structure in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, a major national project in the country. It is the longest storm-water tunnel in South East Asia and second longest in Asia. The main objective of this tunnel is to solve the problem of flash floods in Kuala Lumpur and also to reduce traffic jams along Jalan Sungai Besi and Lok Yew flyover at Pudu during rush hour. There are two components of this tunnel, the storm-water tunnel and motorway tunnel. Storm-water tunnel * Construction cost: RM1,887 million (US$514.6 million) * Storm-water tunnel length: 9.7 km (6.0 mi) * Diameter: 13.2 m (43.3 ft) (outer diameter) * Tunnelling method: Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) * TBM type: Slurry shield Motorway tunnel * Motorway tunnel length: 4 km (2.5 mi) * Structure type: Double Deck * Ingress and egress: 1.5 km (0.93 mi) at Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Imbi * Length: 1.4 km (0.87 mi) at Jalan Tun Razak

How SMART Tunnel works First mode (Normal conditions) The first mode, under normal conditions where there is no storm, no flood water will be diverted into the system. Second mode (Most storms) When the second mode is activated, flood water is diverted into the bypass tunnel in the lower channel of the motorway tunnel. The motorway section is still open to traffic at this stage. Third mode (Major storms) When this mode is in operation, the motorway will be closed to all traffic. After making sure all vehicles have exited the motorway, automated water-tight gates will be opened to allow flood waters to pass through. The motorway will be reopened to traffic within 48 hours of closure.
