Definitions...• Carcinogen: A substance or physical agent

that can cause cancer in humans.

e.g. : Asbestos.

• Mutagen: A substance or physical agent that can cause changes in one or more heredity features by modifying genes.

e.g. : Ionizing radiation.

• Teratogen: A substance capable of causing changes to the developing fetus.

Class A: Compressed Gases

Risks• poses an explosion hazard

because contents of cylinder are under pressure

• container may explode if heated in a fire

• container may explode if dropped

Class B: Flammable & Combustible Materials

• potential fire hazard

• may ignite spontaneously

• may be a material which will release flammable products if allowed to degrade or when exposed to water

Risks

Class C: Oxidizing Materials

• can cause skin or eye burns

• increased risk of fire and/or explosion risk in the presence of flammable or combustible material

• can cause other materials to react or break down

Risks

MSDS’s: Who is Responsible?• provide MSDS in both official languages

• ensure MSDSs are completeSupplier:

Mrs. Lacroix: • obtain MSDS

• ensure MSDSs are available to students for lab preparation

Students: • obtain MSDS from computer

• Review and understand hazards, precautions, and emergency response for all required lab chemicals.

• Write hazards, precautions, and emergency responses in lab notebook prior to Lab Day.

• What dangers might this chemical impose?

Page 37: Your right to know!! WHMIS - Your right to know... WHMIS L 1

Do your homework!!

Look up the hazards on the MSDS.

Controlling Hazards by taking

Precautions….

Page 39: Your right to know!! WHMIS - Your right to know... WHMIS L 1

What Do I Do If ......? A chemical contacts my skin?

A chemical contacts my eyes?

I break glassware?

I spill water?

I spill acid?

Hot liquid overflows while on my hotplate?

My test tube contents fizz and bubble over the top?

I notice a frayed electrical cord?

My lab partner(s) is not following lab rules?
