They were literally jumping for joy at Lowrey school and all for a good cause. Almost 500 students took part in the day-long “Jump Rope For Heart” fundraiser organized by Physical Education Teacher Joyce Murray and supported by many of the dedicated staff at Lowrey. The school raised more than $4,000 through donations and pledges. Ms. Rida’s fifth grade class

came out on top with $380 collected and one of Ms. Rida’s students, Adam, was the top fundraiser of the school collecting $200 for the cause. However, Jump Rope for Heart is about more than just collecting funds for the American Heart Association, it’s also about promoting healthy habits and heart awareness.

The students and parents at Henry Ford Elementary weren’t singing old 80’s songs, instead they were exploring the world of science and engineering at their annual Family Science and Engineering night. The event makes learning fun by offering participants a plethora of hands-on opportunities to learn in an environment that feels more like playing. In rooms filled with robots, cars, parachutes, and rockets, students teach each other what they’ve learned through interactive demonstrations and experiments that show causes and effects. Also taking part were students from the STEM middle school who demonstrated the robots they built, displayed projects and proudly showed off awards they had won. The evening was organized by Enrichment Teacher Kathleen McCormick and the HFES team and enhanced through partnerships with Fordson and University of Michigan students and other Dearborn teachers.

Family Visits Liven Social Studies Lessons

Students enjoy explaining what they’ve learned when they show their work to family members during classroom visits. At Maples Elementary, 5th graders in Mrs. Currie’s social studies class developed electronic travel brochures using Google Docs to present information about the 13 Colonies. Parents and classmates were eager to see each project and hear the stories behind the facts and images on the screens.

Third graders across Dearborn are expanding their vocabularies with free dictionaries provided by The Kiwanis Club of Dearborn Outer Drive. This is the 10th year in a row that Kiwanians, shown in the photo on the right, donated a dictionary to every third grade student in the district. This year, they distributed nearly 1,800 dictionaries to students across Dearborn. “The goal of the program is to assist all students to complete the school year as good writers, active readers and creative thinkers,” Kiwanian Dr. Jim Rugenski said. “Third grade is an important turning point in literacy. Up until third grade the children are learning to read, but during third grade they are reading to learn.” The Kiwanis member also brings some students from the feeder high schools’ Key Club to talk with the students about being good students and good members of the community. “I think the dictionaries are an awesome thing and we all look forward to it each year,” Jacqueline Alabakoff, a third grade teacher at DuVall Elementary, told the Dearborn Press & Guide newspaper. “The kids get so excited about them and have a great time using them and finding all kinds of information. They continue to use them throughout the year. It is so nice because the dictionaries belong to them.” (Happy DuVall students are in the photo to the right.) Henry Ford third grade teacher Jennifer Venis added: “I am a big fan of the dictionaries. My students were so excited to get them. We used them to look up our spelling words. I had a whole lesson on the dictionary.” Center photo: Kiwanis Outer Drive President Scott Murdoch speaking to Salina students at the Annual Dictionary Distribution for 3rd Graders.
