Welcome!As we head into February, January blues are behind us and we look to what the rest of 2013 might bring. For us here at Your Town Centre, it is the anticipation of continuing to grow and improve the magazine and our website.

One thing that we have implemented is themes for each of our issues. This month is Weddings and we have researched an alternative touch along with traditional wedding suppliers. It all kicks off on page 6.

We continue our regular features such as Book Reviews, In The Kitchen and What’s On. A new feature that we have also kicked off is local history and one that will be making a regular appearance.

Billionaire Boy by David Walliams

‘Billionaire Boy’ is the

5th children’s novel

from writer, actor

and comedian David

Walliams.

Walliams is probably best known for his comedy

routines, and in particular, his work on ‘Little Britain’

with fellow actor, writer and comedian Matt Lucas.

However, since 2008 Walliams has turned his hand

to writing hilarious children’s novels which have

won critical acclaim, many prestigious awards and

frequently topped the bestsellers lists.

‘Billionaire Boy’ is the story of Joe Spud, the richest

12 year old boy in the world. His father is the

gazillionaire inventor of Bumfresh toilet roll and Joe

has everything a 12 year old boy could want... his

own cinema, £100,000 a week pocket money, an

almost everything. There is just one thing that Joe

The story of Joe Spud and his search for a friend is

a hilarious, touching and entertaining tale which

appeals to both adults and children alike. Walliams

isn’t afraid to make all the rude inappropriate jokes

that children love, but at the same time tells a

touching story with a moral lesson at the end.

Children and parents will love reading this together,

although perhaps not a good idea at bedtime as the

hilarity that will result won’t make for a calm, sleepy

child! The simple, but effective illustrations by Tony

Ross add to the humour as does some of the visual

jokes that form part of the writing.

Fault Line by Robert Goddard

Robert Goddard has

always been known for

writing classic stories of

romance, tragedy and

skeletons in the family closet. For his die-hard

fans his last 3 novels seems to have disappointed,

but as a new reader of Goddard this one certainly

didn’t disappoint me.

‘Fault Line’ is the story of the Wren family from the

late 60’s to the present day. The family own, run

and work for an international mining company

and the story starts with the search for missing

documents needed to write the history of the

company.

The main character, Jonathan Kellaway, has been

connected to the Wren’s for many years and his

search for the missing documents forces him to

confront the secrets, lies and tragedies of the past.

The story is told in flashback and travels between

Cornwall and Capri as Kellaway finds clues to the

missing documents that also force him to face up

to the past.

Kellaway is a determined character who vows not

to give up until the truth has been told - no matter

who is hurt or exposed in the process.

‘Fault Line’ is a very easy and enjoyable read. Each

chapter leaves the reader with more questions

than answers and makes you want to read on to

find out more.

The story has a well thought-out plot with many

twists and turns that as a reader, I didn’t always

see coming. A real ‘page-turner’.

Anthony Nolan saves the lives of people with blood cancer by matching them to people willing to donate their blood stem cells for lifesaving transplants. In 2009/10 we found 937 matches. For every person whose life we save there is another we can’t because no match can be found for them. There are just over 420,000 people on the register but it isn’t enough. They want to double the number of lives we save every day. Since 1974 Anthony Nolan has given over 9024 people the chance of life.

Donating:

Just 30% of people will be lucky enough to find a matching donor from within their families. There is a 25% chance that a sibling will be a match for a patient. 80% of donations take place via Peripheral Blood Stem Cell collection (PBSC), a process similar to giving blood. Local young woman Catherine Melrose was very sadly diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in mid January this year.

Ingredients:650g of Fresh Minced Beef. Why not get some from your local butcher

next time you’re out.

1 Onions

Seasoning

Preparation:Chop up your onions. If you prefer, you can quickly fry your onions in a

little oil for 2 to 3 minutes to soften them.

Preheat your grill to a medium - high heat.

Get mixing:In a bowl mix together the beef mince and onions until 1 well combined

Season with salt and pepper to your liking2 Using your hands, form 4 burger shapes from the mixture3 Under the pre-heated grill, cook your burgers for around 8 4 minutes on each side or until cooked through

Serve up in buns along with salad and or accompaniments 5 of your choice

Condensed Milk CakeMakes 8 pieces

Mmm, cake! Try making this for a crowd-pleasing dessert, or as a yummy treat for afternoon tea!

Ingredients:400g can condensed, sweetened milk

4 Eggs

1 cup Flour (150 gm)

1/2 Teaspoon Baking powder

50 gm melted Butter + 1 Tablespoon

for brushing the Cake form.

Chickpea CurryServes 4. Suitable for vegetarians & vegans

This is by no means an authentic curry, but it is yummy and very filling! It freezes well, so if there are any leftovers you can save them

for another day. Feel free to adapt ingredients - try adding some dried lemongrass to the spice mix, using fresh chilli instead of dried, or

adding some chopped butternut squash to the mix.

Ingredients:1 onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, finely chopped

1tsp coriander seeds

½ tsp ground coriander

1tsp dried chilli flakes

1tsp ground cumin

¼ tsp ground ginger

4-5 dried curry leaves

400g can checkpeas, drained

400g can chopped tomatoes

400g coconut milk

handful of frozen spinach

1 yellow or red pepper, chopped

1 handful raisins

Get mixing:Preheat the oven to 175°C1 Prepare your 22 cm Cake tin by brushing it with 1 table spoon butter & spreading 2 flour.

With an electric mixer, mix all ingredients (milk, eggs, flour, baking powder & melted 3 Butter)

Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes (or less according to the Cake thickness).4 Sprinkle some powdered sugar on top & serve with fruit sauce or fresh fruits.5

Get mixing:Heat a little oil in a large pan and fry the onion until soft.1 Crush all the spices and 1 clove of garlic together with a pestle and mortar then add 2 to the pan. Cook gently for 1-2 minutes, then add the rest of the garlic.

Add the chickpeas, tinned tomatoes and and coconut milk and stir to mix all the 3 ingredients together. Add the spinach (add more than a handful if you want!).

Bring to a simmer then cook on a low heat for at least 30 minutes. If you cook it for 4 longer, the flavours get nice and mellow.

Add the chopped pepper and raisins and if the sauce needs thickening, add some 5 mango chutney or tomato puree. Continue cooking until the raisins have absorbed

liquid and are nice and juicy.

Serve. This goes really well with some basmati rice. 6

Winter stars & Galaxies

Loch of Strathbeg will be hosting for the second year the hugely successful Stargazing Live! Event, Winter Stars & Galaxies. The evening of stars, satellites, planets and wildlife on Saturday 16th February is fun for all ages and is being run by both the RSPB and Aberdeen Astronomical Society.

Diana Spencer, Visitor & Publicity Officer at the reserve said “This year we’re really excited to have the inflatable Cosmic Dome mini-planetarium, for a fantastic indoor tour of the night sky. As well as being surrounded by stars, we’re also surrounded by nature so you may get to see badgers, bats or owls as well as distant planets”.

Entry is free but booking is advisable due to the limited car parking space. There is a small charge for some activities including the Cosmic Dome Planetarium.

McAdam Design Awarded MasterplanLocal Architects McAdam Design have a lot to shout about at the moment. Next year they will have been operating for 40 years. This is quite an achievement in the current financial climate when long established large corporations are struggling. But longevity is not the only strength that the dynamic team at McAdam Design have; they are a team that works well together with a diverse range of experience in various fields from working on award winning commercial developments to being responsible for the design and project management of house builds.

Some of the recent projects that they have worked

on include overseeing the Award winning facelift and

building restoration at Aden Country Park, the design

of contractor facilities at St Fergus Gas Terminal and

most recently being awarded the contract for the

75-house masterplan at Hillview Farm on the edge

of Stuartfield for Colaren Properties.

This masterplan will be staged over the next few years

and will be carried out in a sympathetic manner to

ensure that existing services are not adversely affected.

This includes looking at things like the additional

number of primary school age children that will be

within the development and as a result consideration

will be given to provide a financial contribution to

extend Stuartfield School. McAdam Design have also

been active in formal public consultations with the

local community, and Architect Kevin O’Brien also held

a design workshop with P6 pupils at Stuartfield School.

The development will be integral into the current

village but also be in keeping with the outlying rural

surroundings. There will be 40% green space to

enable this to be achieved. This huge amount of green

space will allow the development to merge into the

adjacent countryside and not just have a hard edge

to the village. It is also hoped that this will encourage

biodiversity and promote healthier living for the

inhabitants.

be found in many other developments; the distinct

throughout the site in keeping with the scale of the

existing settlement of Stuartfield. They will be of a

design which is sensitive to the nearby surroundings

in designs which are to be of a contemporary take

on what already exists in this popular part of central

Buchan. With low environmental impact waste disposal

and high potential for solar use along with the houses

being built with materials that will make the homes low

energy use this development could be one of the most

sustainable in the area to date.

Pair this with the careful planning of connections to the

local area on foot and visually means that the emphasis

will hopefully be on an outdoor lifestyle and healthier

living. The biodiversity of the area will be contributed

to by the planting of native species.

Peterhead is thought to have its roots as far back as Pre-historic times. Archaeological excavations of the flint mines to the south of the town have provided evidence of this.

It is the most easterly town on the Scottish mainland is about 33 miles north-east of Aberdeen and just south of the mouth of the River Ugie. Up until the late 16th Century the only settlement at Peterhead was the fishing village of Keith-Inch. In 1560 the land on which Peterhead was built and surrounds were granted to Robert Keith, son of the 4th Earl Marischal by Queen Mary. It formerly belonged to the Abbey of Deer.

In 1587 Peterhead was founded by the Keiths Earls Marischal and was developed as a planned settlement.

In 1593 Peterhead was created a burgh of barony and its first harbour, Port Henry, was built. It has grown and developed over the years and this time line is a wee break down of some of the most important milestones of the town history.

In the next few issues we will look at more specific parts of the local history of the town.
