Definition
The time of life between childhood
and maturity however it also
identifies a particular mindset of attitude, as in "He is very youthful". The term youth is also related to being young.
Wellbeing
One in four young Australians experiences a mental illness involving symptoms
such as these, yet 70 per cent of young people who need help or treatment do
not seek it, cannot access help, or help is not available to them.
According to the ABS The most notable change over the decade for 20-24 year
olds has been an increase in the proportion who were studying full time, from
21% in 1999 to 29% in 2009. This coincides with a decline in the proportion
working full-time (from 52% to 47%) and is consistent with increases in both the
completion of secondary school and the undertaking of further post-school
education.
Special NeedsSelf-esteem-most of the young people have a low self esteem hence You lose confidence and the future looks like nothing will change. They can change that by increasing their self esteem by You feel relaxed inside and respect your own values and have some sort of confidence within yourself.
Sense of identity-Most young people struggle with their identities due to having a low self esteem and also Young people’s desire to be accepted, especially among their peers, may make it hard for them to make their own decisions about their place in the world.
Access to Resources
Health-Improving access to Medicare-Young people are entitled to hold their
own Medicare card from the age of 15 years and consequently, are able to obtain
independent access to health services. For more information see the Medicare
Australia website. Rural Health services-The Regional Health Services Program
aims to improve the health and wellbeing of people in rural Australia by providing
small rural communities with funding for primary health services. Services that
can be funded include youth services, podiatry, physiotherapy, rural health
promotion, illness and injury prevention, women's health, children's services,
community nursing, mental health, radiology and immunisation.
Socioeconomic Status- Centrelink- youth allowance can assist you if you are a
young person who is studying, undertaking training or an Australian
Apprenticeship, looking for work, or sick.
Issues of ConcernViolence-There is violence between young people this is due to a
misunderstanding between friends , alcohol, drugs and many more and it is
common between both genders.
Discrimination-It is common within young people such as racism because they
don’t like that particular person or their race. However most young people can be
discriminated at school or in a workforce this is because of there race, gender,
ethnicity etc.
Mental Health-Adolescents with mental health problems do not have problems
that are limited to a single aspect of their lives. Rather, their problems are wide-
ranging and include suicidal ideation,smoking, alcohol use and drug abuse.
Rights
•A child or minor, for the purposes of many laws, such
as the right to vote, the right to buy alcohol and for
aspects of criminal law, is someone under 18 years.
•Once you are 18, you are legally an adult and are
covered by the same laws as adults. This means you no
longer need your parents' permission to do things.
Services available for the Youth
•Drug and Alcohol Youth Service
The Drug and Alcohol Youth Service (DAYS) is an integrated service incorporating Next Step (a
Government Alcohol and Other Drugs youth service) and Mission Australia’s Withdrawal and
Rehabilitation units. It provides a key entry point to treatment for young West Australians with alcohol
and other drug issues.
•Youth Healthline
The Youth Healthline is a telephone service for young people aged 12 to 25 years in South Australia.
The Youth Healthline is staffed by health professionals who are trained and experienced in working
with young people. It is a confidential service for all young people, particularly those who may want to
talk to someone about what is going on in their life
