We’re either working long hours or relaxing with a few beers in hand. It rarely occurs

to us to go out and do something that doesn’t benefit us at all. It could be something as small as spending some time with an elderly neighbor who lives alone to planting trees in your locality. Some schools and colleges have incorporated community service into their extra-curriculum in recent times. But more often than not, we engage in the activity to get the necessary certification rather than really wanting to reach out.

Winston Churchill said,” We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” Community service is more than just giving off your old clothes to the poor or signing a cheque as a donation to a foundation. All of that is good, no doubt, but money is not going to save our dwindling environment or make an orphan feel loved.

We belong to the fortunate strata of society and sadly, it’s a very small portion of the populace. Among other things we take for granted, a good home to go back to, a sumptuous meal on our tables every night and the education that’s provided for us are the one’s that top the list. When we are given so much, it’s very easy to overlook those that aren’t so blessed. It doesn’t occur to us that maybe there’s a child out there struggling to read under the street light after a day of toiling for his family. Or that maybe the family which huddles together to sleep on a single mat near your parking lot must have gone without food tonight.

So you get my point. There’s so much ill-fortune in the world out there and we so easily drift by turning a blind eye to everything around. If you’re not already a part of something that doesn’t involve only self-indulgence, then go out there and look for something you could apply yourself to. There’s tons of organizations that help with education for street children, like Aakansha and Teach for India. If

you don’t think you’d be good at that, then get hold of your friend circle and visit an old age home once a month. You could also help out with litter campaigns or if you can manage a few days off, then sign yourself up for a rural camp. Even something fun like playing football or cricket with the street kids in your area.

Service in itself is about moving out of oneself to connect with another. Taking some time out to do this will enhance your life in ways you wouldn’t think of. Reaching out to the world is something that every single one of us can and must do.

We talk to Romana Shaikh, Director of Training and Impact at Teach for India on what got her interested, her experiences and how to get the community as a whole involved in service.

What inspired you to join Teach for India?During my years at St. Xavier’s college, the 26/11 terror attack struck. At that time, people began discriminating Muslims and blaming them for the attacks. Even the people around me in college had similar opinions and judged the sect relentlessly. That’s when I realized that the people who were trained to carry out these attacks knew no better. They were taught to strike and kill and that was their primary education. That’s when I realized the importance of education in someone’s life and how it shapes the person they are and who they turn out to be. TFI was introduced to us in college and I joined as a fellow for 2 years and got involved and grown

more so in the following years.

How has your experience been working with the kids at TFI?During my two years of fellowship, I realized that I love being a teacher. Over the past three years as a part of staff, I realized that being a teacher is everything. I don’t understand manager, coach, teacher, leader as separate things, for me it’s just teaching. At TFI, I got a chance to do more than just teach the kids and go back home. I got to meet their parents and visit their home and really see what poverty feels like. I got to understand the various problems they faced. We have social involvement programs in schools and colleges, but it doesn’t really give us a complete insight to what’s going on below the surface. At TFI, I had a bigger realization of the discrimination that is still prevalent.

Can you stress the need for community service among the youth and how can they be encouraged to be a part of it?I wouldn’t call it community service but more like getting involved and really getting to know what’s happening in our society. The population is growing by the day and with it, poverty and corruption at multiple levels. We need to start by changing our lives in order to someday bring a change in the world. We need to start caring about each other and just moving out of ourselves and getting involved in the life of someone not as fortunate as you. We need to be empathetic to the lives of others. We are literate and yet insensitive, knowledgeable and yet we don’t understand the challenges faced in our community. We need to realize how privileged we are in the way we are and unprivileged we are in the way we are. We need to be mobilized to take action. The country needs to be made aware of the problems being faced and also about all the avenues that are available for them to reach out andw help.yi


Youth Issues

Considering we are talking about such a historically controversial subject, it’s only fitting we start right

at the beginning of the controversy. After all, they do say it is the best place to start a story, right? So, what was the deal with marijuana?

In the times of lore in India, marijuana was considered to be a very inculcated part of our culture. In fact, take a trip to the innermost villages in the country, and it is not uncommon

The history of the banThe story started in 1961, with the ‘single convention on narcotic drugs’ the first ever international treaty to have clubbed cannabis (or marijuana) with hard drugs and imposed a blanket ban on their production and supply except for medicinal and research purposes. During the negotiations for the UN treaty signed in New York, a group of cannabis and opium producing countries, led by India, opposed its intolerance to the

So in a country where we chose to restrict everything that a woman should or should not do since the earliest times, if marijuana was not an issue for grandmothers, who can be arguably called the pariahs of Indian virtues and culture, why do we fear the weed enough to have banned it for decades?


Marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug in the world with

an estimated 125 million people consuming it in some form or the other

every year. In India, marijuana

use has been historically

bound to faith and mysticism. Why then is it so stringently banned? And

more importantly, should it be?

consumption associated iwth it. the UN gave India 25 years to abolish the practice of use of recreational drugs. It was only towards the end of this period that the Indian government at that time, more popularly known as the Rajiv Gandhi government conformed to the 1961 treaty, the narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances act (NDPS) and thus, marijuana was illegal in India.

NDPS specified that cannabis meant charas (the resin extracted from the plant), ganja (the flowering or fruiting tops of the plant) and any mixture or drink prepared from either of the two permitted forms of marijuana. Thus, NDPS allows people to smoke pot or drink bhang so long as they can prove that they had consumed only the leaves and seeds of the cannabis plant. Which, if you ask us, makes no sense at all. And of course, as with all laws, this one too stuck long enough for the practise of the law to not be associated with the terminology of it. So if you're caught with only the leaves and the seeds of the drug today, dont expect to be spared.

ProsMarijuana use is not as harmful as it is made out to be. In fact tetrahydrocannabinol or THC contained in marijuana has been shown to have significant health benefits. CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent, Sanjay Gupta, wrote in an article titled Why I Changed My Mind on Weed: “Medical marijuana is not new, and the medical community has been writing about it for a long time. There were in fact hundreds of journal articles, mostly documenting the benefits. Most of those papers, however, were written between the years 1840 and 1930. The papers described the use of medical marijuana to treat ‘neuralgia, convulsive disorders, emaciation,’ among other things.”

Medical marijuana helps as a sleep aid; helps combat nausea due to chemotherapy; and helps with muscle

tension, spasms and chronic pain.Further, marijuana is shown to be

much less addictive than cigarettes or tobacco. Marijuana is reportedly less addictive than alochol and cigarettes. If alcohol and tobacco are legal, then why shouldn’t marijuana be legal, given that it is less lethal as well? Indeed, there have been no deaths reported of marijuana overdose. It reportedly takes 15,00 pounds of marijuana injested in 15minutes to induce a lethal response.

For all these reasons legalization of marijuana at a minimum can reduce illegal cross border trafficking, reduce illicit pot farms and create a more effective and regulated market for meeting the obvious demand for this drug, while also creating an entirely new industry that can produce marijuana not only for smoking, but hemp can also be used for textile purposes, among others. Imagine the number of jobs that can come out of this!

ConsIn support of legalization, the libertarian view is that individuals should be allowed to put whatever they want in their bodies and the liberal view is that the war on drugs has failed and that it has disproportionately impacted minorities. Either is not a sufficient argument to legalize a substance for recreational use that seriously impairs one’s judgment and health.

Its a simple judgement call. And one that needs you to look back into history. Marijuana was a part of the Indian culture for centuries, which kept its use to a minimum. Since it's illegal status, the number of marijuana users has grown exponentially.We created a war against drugs where there wasn't one. The country that enforced this law upon us is now slowly chnaging it's own stance on the issue state-wise. The question to answer is, do we continue on with an archaic law, that wasnt even ours in the first place, or do we move on? yi

socio-cultural use of organic drugs. They were however overwhelmed by the US and other western countries which espoused tight controls on the production of organic raw material and on illicit trafficking.

You feel a lack of it and it challenges you because your mind is still thinking theologically but you need to try and choose when you release that. It also was a challenge because I found myself struggling with how I worshipped and prayed. I found myself critiquing church rather than participating, discussing and thinking about why everything was done rather than doing it myself. so the big challenges were the feeling of withdrawal symptoms from lectures, and having a theological heart for worship, rather than a pure heart.

What are the future career prospects after one has completed this course?Career paths can appear to be very limited, but are actually very wide for a theology graduate. You can go into publishing of Christian books, many organizations need translators (studying biblical languages), many Christian charities look for theological graduates as they are encountering more and more educated opposition. You can pursue work in the teaching field. These are some of many career opportunities which you can pursue as a theology graduate.

What advice would you give a student aspiring to pursue nutrition as a career?I would suggest that this course and field is not something which one can pursue or practice half- heartedly or with less knowledge or by just doing a certificate course. LinkedIn, world’s largest professional networking website operator, has decided to launch LinkedIn Placements app to offer a golden chance to freshly graduated kids to look and find their first job. LinkedIn has a user base of over 30 million in India, which makes it second largest market after the United States. LinkedIn Placements enable students to apply for jobs from anywhere and anytime and stay informed.

We spoke to Priyanka Lunawat, a student of Welingkar Institute about her views of this initiative. She said,” With the launch of placements initiatives by the World’s largest professional network, LinkedIn, it would make students across India find their jobs easily. A student from anywhere can apply for jobs of his/her preference and can stay informed. The vast platform would not only facilitate placements season but would also help all students to attain their dream jobs.”

Ganesan Venkatasubramanian, head of engineering, LinkedIn India, said, “Our conversations with students, placement officers and recruiters involved in campus placement point to an unmet need for efficiency and effectiveness. We are excited to start this journey to provide a locally developed solution that helps to improve the experience and processes for everyone involved in the entire campus recruitment ecosystem.”

We asked Anita Desai, who is a part of the career management cell at Welingkar Institute, the reason behind choosing to be a part of this collaboration. She said, “We were looking for such an opportunity which was presented to us by LinkedIn. LinkedIn is a platform where we can connect with a lot of new companies and also explore the possibilities of getting international internships / placements.”

LinkedIn Placements is completely free of cost for users. With the help of it, students will be able to keep track of suitable jobs and apply accordingly. They will receive real time updates on their applications. Placement officers will be able to organize their data with greater efficiency and see the offers a student gets and recruiters can post jobs and also filter the candidate pool ahead of campus placements.

When asked about the expectations from such an initiative, Anita said “The product is expected to make the entire process live, seamless with minimum manual intervention which will make the process more accurate and less time consuming.” While Priyanka added,” This collaboration would make things simpler for the students, the placement committee in each college and also different recruiters from companies. Often it becomes difficult for a student to land up with a job that he likes. This alliance would be fruitful to all

students giving them an opportunity to apply to some brilliant companies that have always been on their wish list.”

In the last seven years the volume in auto industry of the country grew by 11.6% making it one of the top contributor of GDP. As of 2010, India is home to 40 million passenger vehicles. More than 3.7 million automotive vehicles were produced in India in 2010 (an increase of 33.9%), making the country the second (after China) fastest growing automobile market in the world in that year. India has attracted many foreign giants like Hyundai, Suzuki, BMW, Audi, Mercedes Benz, Ford, Fiat, Honda, Chevrolet (of General Motors), Toyota, Lamborghini, Jaguar, and Eicher. Apart from them we have TATA, Mahindra, Hero Moto corp who has good reputation even outside India. India has roughly 3700 factories across the country. An

average firm makes an annual revenue of US$6 million with a profit closing to US$400 thousand.

We are also one of the top exporters of automobiles and auto products just behind Japan and South Korea. India keeps on exploring in this field. There is also components manufacturing, which once again a huge area. So yes there is a huge scope for automotive engineers in India.

From an education perspective, what are the essential characteristics for someone pursuing a diploma in automobile engineering?A career as an automobile engineer is for people who are driven and passionate about cars or bikes. They must have considerable understanding and interest in mechanics, electronics, and mathematics as these are vital skills required for this career path. Automobile Engineers must have aim goal of his life. There should be vision which helps them to achieve their goals. Automobile engineers must be organized individuals who are able to work in a methodical manner. Automotive engineer jobs need constant up gradation of skills to keep pace with technological advancements. Many of automotive engineering graduates also join defense services of the country. Some even setup own business venture or take up traditional teaching profession.

What is the national and international scope for automobile modification and product design?As the aspirations and demands of people for better cars & motorcycles rise in India, the scope for automobile design is bound to grow too. What are the current trends and highlights of the automobile design industry?The automotive industry is always on the move. It is a world of constant change and improvement where design is a sign of the times. Automotive Design is influenced by trends with often a much wider base than the world of products. They can reflect social developments and feelings around emancipation, sustainability or economics. There is a relation with fashion on the one hand and with technology on the other. There are short lived trends and trends of today that will continue long into the future. According to me, the following are a few trends which are driving the automotive industry crazy. Individuality: Today’s youth not only want ‘a’ car, they want ‘their’ car. Individually styled to

their taste as a means of personal expression. Individual, low volume, body shapes are enabled by modern production technology and platform based architectures. Further individualization & customization can be done by extensive option packages and individualized color and trim. Light Design & LED technology: Lights are very important styling elements on the exterior of a car. They started as true add-ons, mounted on a bracket, were then fluently integrated in the body shape and today stand out as true eye catchers dominating the front end. The design is no longer the shape of the body, but in the interior of the light the bulb, the lenses. Sculpted surfaces: Surfaces are no longer nicely curved and integrated to make a nice overall form. German design was traditionally characterized as ‘aus eimem Guss’ until Chris Bangle set BMW design upside down by creating complex surfaces with sharp lines and a mix of convex and concave shapes.Materials: Use of bio plastics is the new innovation. Mercedes-Benz launched its new Pre-Owned car brand, ‘Mercedes-Benz Certified’ in India in December 2014 by the simultaneous inauguration of 12 new ‘Mercedes-Benz Certified’ outlets across India. This new brand is designed specifically for the Indian market. Although the Indian market is seeing a growth in the purchase of pre-owned cars, this trend dates back to the 1990’s when Luxury marques Lexus and Mercedes-Benz were among the first to create CPO programs in the 1990s.

Although buying a vehicle today is made more convenient thanks to development in technology, there are still a few pointers you need to keep in mind while making a purchase:1. Check the pricing online or with the dealers on the car you intend to buy, used or new. Look at related variants to know about other options if you are willing to spend more or less.2. Where did the idea to sell used certified cars stem from?As M square group dealers for Audi in Mumbai South, Nashik and Aurangabad, we started our operations in January 2013 and being non-industry were very excited with the new project, but in the span of one year we started realizing that there are a large number of customers who are aspiring to buy a luxury car but were not able to do so because of a tight budget and were not considering used cars as there was no guiding source for them to help select a car as per their need or were afraid of the after sales expense. That is when we realized the potential of this segment and started our Audi Approved Plus division where we sell cars with a certification and service plan and trained sales team who can guide them and help them buy their first luxury car with a warranty back up and finance options and giving them a complete peace of mind under one roof.

A new London Motor Show is being launched in May 2016 at Battersea Park.

How has the national and international participation for the Expo been so far?Indian automobile industry is highly globalized, with local presence of most of the global automobile companies. Many global automobile conglomerates have set us manufacturing plants in the country to cater to the local market and to export from the country. The first edition of the Auto Expo was conceived in 1985 and the first edition took place in 1986. How many new automobiles will you be launching this year?The vehicle exhibitors are solely responsible for the launches in the Auto Expo. We are yet to hear from them on this front. We would only get to know about the launches closer to the event.

How much new – age technology has been incorporated in these vehicles?Over the years vehicle technology has improved substantially in India. Today’s vehicles are more fuel efficient, clean and safe, compared to vehicles of the past.

What is the reason behind organizing the Auto Expo?The first edition of the Auto Expo in 1986 was essentially a window for

technology transfers since it showed how the Indian Automotive Industry was absorbing new technologies and promoting indigenous R&D for adapting these technologies for the rugged Indian conditions. It has grown manifolds since then from being the much needed platform to the Indian automotive industry, to today a quarter century later, providing a platform to the Indian automotive industry to showcase its products, designs, capabilities, brand building and to connect with the customers directly.

Is the Auto Expo 2016 any different from Auto Expo 2015 apart from the new vehicles being brought in?There has been a massive change in terms of infrastructure from the previous edition. India Expo Mart Limited (IEML), the venue for the Auto Expo- The Motor Show 2016. The venue has witnessed enormous construction in the form of additional six large halls with an additional carpet area of 37240 sqms complete with air conditioning and adequate power supply cabling. The gross indoor exhibition space has increased from 62,000 sqms. in the previous edition to 68,000 sqms.The venue previously had only 8 permanent halls measuring 27,648 sqms, as a result in the 2014 edition the remaining display was curated in temporary hangers measuring 32,400 sqms.

The entire venue has been booked well in advance and it is expected that there will be around seven lakhs visitors in Auto Expo – The Motor Show 2016 during the five public days, which will be almost 20% more than the last edition. The previous edition saw 55 exhibitors, which has already crossed 60 for the upcoming edition.Also, in terms of the exhibitors, we would have new brands in this edition like Abarth, BMW Motorrad, Jeep, DSK Benelli, Indian Motorcycle, etc. Also, there will be some exciting hybrid and electric vehicles displayed this time. yi

Blind Man Car Rally India is clearly the home of unusual road races; this one has more than 70 blind drivers being directed around the streets of Mumbai by partially sighted navigators reading Braille maps. India-ASEAN Car RallyThe India-ASEAN Car Rally is conceptualized with the aim to strengthen India’s relations with the South-Asian countries. The rally aims to promote trade and tourism between India and ASEAN. The first India-ASEAN Car Rally was acknowledged by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh from Guwahati. The rally witnessed 250 participants from India as well as South-Asian countries in 60 vehicles and rallied across Assam, Nagaland and Manipur before entering Myanmar.

What got you interested in retro wheels?Ever since I can remember I used to be crazy about cars. When I was 7 years old I found my dad’s 1939 Austin 8 and told him I wanted to fix it up. At first he informed me that the car was never lost, but was just parked away. He then laughed and encouraged me to go ahead and torestore the car with the help of some of his technicians.

What are the skills required for someone dealing with vintage cars and which are the most popular ones?More than skills alone, one needs to have a passion for these beauties along with knowledge and understanding of how and why a particular system was placed on the car and as to how these cars have evolved over time. It is difficult to specify which would be the most popular brands, butsince India was under the British for almost 200 years, consequently most of the cars in India are of British heritage.

Do you participate in the vintage car rallies in the city? Tell us alittle about your experience.Participating in Vintage runs smoothens my nerves and keeps me at peace. More than just Vintage and Classic rallies a group of my friends all of whom share the same interest, meet almost every Sunday at 7 am for coffee and breakfast to sit and discuss the various aspects of each ones cars. A group of 30 then jump into our respective cars and drive in a convoy 70 to 90 miles on that Sunday morning.The morning run has become so successful from the time it first started with 4 cars doing the runs that has now expanded to 30 cars where each one of us has a great time cruising across the country. yi

What do you like most about the Enfield Riders rally that takes place in the country?It is the diversity of people that you get to witness at these rallies. Geographically you’ll find riders from almost all parts of India most of them from Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Pune, Mumbai, Bengaluru & Chennai also, everyone finds time out of their hectic schedules and commitments to do what they love the best,that is to ride and explore. Personally, I have met riders who professionally are investment bankers, chartered accountants, techies, game designers, doctors and students, so you feel the diversity I am talking about and all of them come to a single platform ,all enthusiastic about the ride.

What attracted you to the Royal Enfield?Right from my childhood I’ve been fascinated about two wheelers. Thanks to my folks, my first ride was when I was 3, on a BMX. Going down memory lane, I remember when we used to travel, I would sit on the suitcase and drag it for the whole length of Pune Station thinking it was my Yamaha. It was a rage back then. My dad owned a Yezdi Classic Twin Silencer which I could never get a hold on since I was too young. Thus, given the initiation, owning a Royal Enfield was a natural choice. A combination of the old school feel, raw power & thump makes it a winner.

What are the usual number of participants in such rallies and how diverse are they?Usually rides on tougher terrains would see lesser number of participants but this depends majorly on the organizers so you would expect to see about 40 to 50 riders, whereas, destination events attract a lot of participant numbers going into a couple of thousands.The only advice I would give a bike enthusiast is to enjoy and ride safe.

In order of significance, the principal greenhouse gases associated with road transport are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Of the total greenhouse gas emissions from transport, over 85% are due to CO2 emissions from road vehicles. The transport sector is the fastest growing source of greenhouse gases. Health: Vehicle pollutants have been linked to human ill health including the incidence of respiratory and cardiopulmonary disease and lung cancer. According to the World Health Organisation, up to 13,000 deaths per year among children (aged 0–4 years) across Europe are directly attributable to outdoor pollution. When did the concept of making an eco-friendly car strike?As a student at the University of Michigan, the founder of Reva, Mr. Chetan Maini had the opportunity to be part of a team that raced a solar powered car across the United States. They also took the car on to drive across Australia. The idea of using a vehicle powered by green energy to cross an entire continent first led him to start thinking about bringing an electric car to India. In 1994, Reva Electric Car Company was founded. In May 2010, Mahindra Group acquired a majority stake in the company, as an exemplification of the Mahindra’s vision of the Future of Mobility - an automotive ecosystem that brings Clean, Convenient, Connected, Clever and Cost-effective (the 5 C’s) mobility solutions to customers across the world.

How has the market for ecofriendly cars grown in recent years?Globally, nations and markets with strong government policy support have seen a significant uptake of electric vehicles. In India, the Ministry’s FAME Scheme is a great step to churn the growth for the EV industry, with

What are the major challenges faced while manufacturing such a car?The Electric Vehicle (EV) technology is new and it’s going through a learning curve. In the initial stages getting financial support for products like ours was a big challenge. Today

the Government’s FAME (Faster Adoption & Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) incentive surely is an encouragement, but we still have a long way to go. Since we are the only EV manufacturer in India, some raw materials and components of our car e2o are imported. A major part of it is the battery that powers the car. This in turn makes the cost of the car high in a price sensitive market like India. However, we do have a lot more acceptance today than we had a few years back.

Do you think these cars have the potential to replace the modern day cars?I think we are at the cusp of a huge shift in terms of how consumers look at personal mobility. There are consumers who believe that EVs are the right thing because of the economic and ecological advantage they offer. There is a lot happening around the world as far as electric vehicles are concerned and consumers are reading about it. With the announcement and implementation of the FAME scheme, we foresee substantial growth taking place in the Indian EV Industry soon. yi

advancing upon the music industry. And we could not be happier about this change. Almost on the verge of extinction, Indian classical music is making a sure shot comeback with many young musicians taking it over and mixing it up with a variety of more popular genres of music and creating some fabulous Indian fusion numbers for younger audiences.

World music is a musical category encompassing many different styles of music from around the globe, which includes many genres of non-Western music including folk music, ethnic music, traditional music, indigenous music, neotraditional music, and music where more than one cultural tradition, such as when ethnic music and Western popular music intermingle. the culturally exotic is encapsulated in Roots magazine’s description of the genre as “local music from out there”.The term was popularized in the 1980s as a marketing category for non-Western traditional music. Globalization has facilitated the expansion of world music’s audiences and scope. It has grown to include hybrid subgenres such as world fusion, global fusion, ethnic fusionand worldbeat.

Fusion is not a very old trend in Indian music. Fusion trend is said to have begun with Ali Akbar Khan’s 1955 performance in the United States. Indian fusion music came into being with rock and roll fusions with Indian music in the 1960s and 1970s. But it was limited to Europe and Europe and North America. For some time the stage of Indian fusion music was taken by Pt Ravi Shankar, the Sitar maestro.

Pt Ravi Shankar began fusing jazz with Indian traditions along with Bud Shank, a jazz musician. Soon the trend was imitated by many popular

European and American music exponents. In the year 1965, George Harrison played the song, “Norwegian wood” on the Sitar. Another famous Jazz expert, Miles Davis recorded and performed with the likes of Khalil Bal Krishna, Bihari Sharma, and Badal Roy. Some other prominent Western artists like the Grateful Dead, Incredible String Band, the Rolling Stones, the Move and Traffic soon integrated Indian influences and instruments and developed the trend of fusion.

The Mahavishnu Orchestra of John McLaughlin pursued fusion with great integrity and authenticity in the mid-1970s. In the process John joined forces with L. Shankar, Zakir Hussain and others. The trend of fusion took over the Indian-British artists in the late 1980s, who fused Indian and Western traditions. In the new millennium, a new trend of fusing Indian Film and Bhangra music has started in America. Many of the mainstream artists have taken inspiration from Bollywood movies and worked with Indian artists. yi


How did you come up with the idea for the Indian Jam Project?I always wanted to incorporate Indian techniques of composition into western pieces. I have been influenced by both since I was a kid, so it wasn’t too hard for me to start with something like the Indian Jam Project. Game of Thrones was one of my favourite TV series and I loved its theme song, so I started off with that.

Why did you choose the Indian Jam Project as your name?Haha! It’s not the best name! Actually, Michael Price tweeted about the Game of Thrones video, thinking Indian Jam is the name of the band, while it was meant to be interpreted like it’s a ‘jam session’. But then we kind of got famous with the name, so Indian Jam Project it was!

What were some of the challenges you faced?For me, one of the major challenges is definitely writing the arrangement - writing parts for all the instruments which are supposed to be put together

We went too Bollywood and forgot that we own something so brilliant. And to make things worse, bad EDM is stepping in. I can’t compare music and call a particular genre better, but Indian Classical music definitely needs

to be out there more than it is right now.

Why did you choose to showcase fusion music with the theme songs of popular western TV series and movies specifically?Composition wise they are quite good, with just the right amount of complexity and they’ve got a catchy element because they need to be showcased on television. Seemed like a pretty good option.

Do you perform live on stage as well? Where can we catch you next?Yes! We’re performing at Mood Indigo, IIT Mumbai this December.

for your work. How did it happen? What was your reaction?It was very, very overwhelming. All the members were extremely happy. These are some pretty big musicians and producers. We couldn’t believe it! It encouraged all of us even more to go further with this project. yi

How did you come up with the idea for the Maati Baani?Maati Baani literally means “The language of earth”. As musicians we did not want to keep the compositions to ourselves. It is our love for different music from various cultures and lands that brought us together. We always wanted our music to be collaborative and not limited to any one genre. It gives us an opportunity to explore world music and sounds that are still rooted in tradition. The core idea behind Maati Baani is to keep Indian Classical music as a protagonist among various other sounds, cultures, languages and voices of the world. What were some of the challenges you faced?As interesting as it is, collaborating with different artists around the globe is not at all an easy task. Even once the artist has expressed full enthusiasm, sometimes it doesn’t work out because their schedules might be busy during the timeframe in which we need their material. Once they are on board,

What, according to you is the future of Indian and international music?In these times of turmoil, music is a healing touch. Today, the power of technology has opened more doors, connecting some immensely talented musicians to co-create music. What seemed impossible a few years ago has now become possible! MaatiBaani’s new series is one good example where we have co-created music through technology. Can you tell us a little more about your new music season? Our new series is one of a kind. We are

taking global music to another level and coming up with a digital musical series done entirely through online collaboration. It features more than 70 artists across 20 countries. The 1st season is set to be released in Dec, 2015 and we are working with the post-production for the same, setting minor details in place and assembling the songs. We bet it’ll be worth the wait. Which were some of the most exciting collaborations for you personally? It has to be Rang Rangiya which was an Indo-Pak collaboration released on the Independence Day of both the nations in 2014. Historically, we were a same country and we still are, only separated by borders. India and Pakistan has always shared a strained relationship, so what could have been better than a musical offering of love, peace and friendship.We believe, music is the most celebrated art form all over the world so why not use it for the greater good. yi


Son to the legendary Ustab Alla Rakha and brother to Ustad Zakir Hussain, Taufiq Qureshi can certainly be called the pioneer of djembe in India. Being rooted in his background of Indian classical music, he diversified completely by introducing the African instrument to India and opening up the Indian audiences, even the non-tabla listeners, to his father’s incomparable legacy. He is now passing on his own legacy to his son, Shikhar Naad, who is an exceptional djembe player himself. We talk to this inspirational father-son duo about their exceptional heritage and their love for percussion.

It has been a long career for you, Mr. Qureshi. What would you say are your favourite highlights of your journey so far?One of the highlights of my journey was the release of RHYDHUN in 2000 which was a landmark album for me because it pivoted me right top there among some well known percussionists in the world. Apart from the many concerts I did through my career, the first time I did my

Legendary percussionist Taufiq Qureshi and his son Shikhar Naad talk to us about their love for percussion and

the legacy of their prestigious family.

Djembe solo, which is an African instrument on which I defined the repertoire of all my father’s knowledge of the tabla. The first time I performed such a solo was in 2009 at the Shyamukananda Hall, where I played in front of a stalwart of artists. It was a defining point in my career. Another highlight was during one of my visits to the U.S when I was playing the djembe and after my performance a lot of percussionists who were djembe and congo players came up to me and appreciated my work and asked me about the technique I was using.

How did you come up with the idea for Mumbai Stamp?When I was returning back from one of my visits to Singapore, on my way home I got the strong stench that Mumbai offers and saw the garbage filled roads. I went back to my students and asked them to go to their area, collect any garbage cans that produce sound and make music. At that time I was working on my album called Bombay Fever and I wanted to do something that would showcase the spirit of Mumbai which I composed

using all the kachra we collected in the studio and that’s how Mumbai Stamp was born in 2006. The main aspect of Mumbai Stamp is to work on trash which is not bought but collected.

Mr. Naad, what according to you is the best thing about performing with your father?The best thing about working with my father is that there’s always something new to learn, something new to experience and look forward to and that’s something you don’t get with many people. There aren’t many challenges as such, but I always try to please him and hope that he likes my work. It’s not at all stressful as he lets his students be what they want to and he lets us experiment so there’s no pressure.

What can we look forward to in the future from the two of you as a father-son duo?We are focusing on releasing an album solely on our djembe playing, with the repertoire of the tabla. We will continue performing live as well. yi

F – FoodThere’s so much to discover with regards to food out there. If you can cook, go ahead and make them their favorite meal once in a while or maybe something totally out of the usual menu. If not, don’t fret, there are tons of outlets for every palate out there.

G – GratitudeBe grateful for your partner. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have someone to share their lives with. So, compliment them all the time. Tell them how lucky you are to have them in your life and don’t ever take them for granted.

H – HikeThere are beautiful places in the city with breathtaking views at all times of the day. Climb a hill and see the world out there. If neither of you’ll fancy hiking, you’ll can also take a long walk along the beach or have a picnic at the local park.

I – InnovateTry coming up with new things that are solely yours. It could be a meal, or a concoction of a drink or maybe a story line or a cartoon. Inspire each other and blend in your thoughts to create something that belongs to just the two of you.

K – KissKiss their forehead, their cheek, their nose and everything in between. Kiss a lot. Show them you love them, you want them, you need them; either sloppily or with just a peck.

L – ListenListen to them talk. Listen to every little detail even when you’re just back home after a really tiring day. Even when you don’t have a clue about what they’re going on about. Even when you’re dying to say something. First, listen.

M – MingleDon’t exclude yourselves from the outside world. Hang out with your partners friends, take him/her out with yours. Don’t get caught up in your own bubble all the time. It’s also always healthier to maintain your own personal relationships with your friends. Let them go out with theirs and you hang out with your own.

N – NicknameCome up with a cute nickname for your significant other, apart from the usual baby, sweetheart and darling. It could be with regards to something quirky you like about them. You don’t necessarily need to use it in public. It can just be something just the two of you know about. Like a secret.

O – ObsessFuss over them. Fuss over every mood, every phase, everything they like or dislike. Don’t be super-obsessive that it gets borderline annoying, but show them that what they like or how they’re feeling really matters to you.

P – PhotographsYou don’t need to take pictures of every single thing you’ll do, although that is fine as well. But if you’re not the regular selfie-taker, pose for a few. Months later these very photos will get you smiling. Even though you won’t forget, it won’t harm to save some memories on film.

Q – QuestionAnd I don’t mean interrogate suspiciously. But ask them about their day, their favorite drink, what they dreamt about. It could be anything. Questioning shows that you’re really interested in knowing all about them, even the tiniest details.

R – RespectWe’re all human, we’re wired differently and no matter how well you click with someone, there’s bound to be differences. Remember the ‘agree to disagree’ formula at all times.

S – SingIt could be at home, in the car or at a karaoke bar; sing your hearts out when you hear a familiar line. And maybe when you’ll share a moment while belting out lyrics, you might find your couple song!

T – TravelPick a weekend, pack your bags and head out of town. Go as far as that train can take you. Indulge in nature, discover yourself and each other.

U – UnderstandSometimes you just need to get that things won’t turn out the way you expected and you need to be fine with that, however much you wanted for it to happen.

V – VocalizeIf something’s bothering you, don’t bottle it up, just talk about it. Don’t expect the other to figure things out themselves. Not everyone is a mind reader.

W – WriteBe it a poem, a quote, a note or a letter; write them something. It’s the easiest way to portray your emotions and it’ll brighten up their day as well.

X – ExLeave jealousy aside, it’s a real waste of an emotion. Focus on your present. Your partner is with you now and that is all that matters.

The year of bansFor some reason, 2015 was the year our Indian government got very interested with what we put in our mouths. From a state-wide beef ban in Maharashtra (which led to Kerela mocking the ban too by celebrating a day of beef where succulent preparations of the controversial meat were cooked and given out in mass quantities on the streets), to banning the staple favourite Maggi noodles; we can safely call 2015 the year of bans. Thank God Maggi’s back though; we wouldn’t know what to do without it. But all in all, Nestle clearly had an eventful year with the almost nation-wide ban and the comeback, don’t you think?

IndIa becomes The hub for wesTern musIc vIdeosWe are still lamenting over the time when Chris Martin randomly ended up in a pub in Delhi, partying with AIB. Oh no we love the fact that he was here, but no one knew, and we weren’t prepared, and that’s not cool! Funny thing, that wasn’t the only time he was here. Coldplay was spotted a few weeks afterwards in Mumbai shooting for their new music video. Turns out, India caught the eye of quite a few western music artistes as the perfect place for their music videos, with Major Lazer and DJ Snake also choosing to shoot the music video for extremely popular song, Lean On in Karjat.

aIb roasTThe AIB Knockout sparked quite a controversy in March. While Aamir Khan and Twinkle Khanna voiced their opinions against the contents of the video, most others have been against the attack on AIB. It was hilarious to watch how most people missed out on the point of a roast, which is that it’s ‘insult comedy’. All in all, AIB tried really hard to introduce India to a new form of comedy only to have to issue an open apology for their hard work. Maybe we haven’t grown up as much as we would like to believe by 2015.

IndIa’s daughTerIf a documentary based on an inhumane crime is considered just as criminally offensive as the crime itself, BBC’s documentary film India’s Daughter stands guilty as charged. It caused an uproar when the Indian government feverishly tried to take down all sources of the video because “excerpts of the interview as published are highly offensive and have already created a situation of tension and fear among women in society”. In Shakespearean tongue, ‘to censor or not to censor, that is the question.’

Two brothers, Saïd and Chérif Kouachi forced their way into the offices of the French satirical weekly newspaper Charlie Hebdo in an terror attack that killed 11. However, the newspaper took only a week to bounce back from the attack, hitting the market with a rejuvenated fervour against terrorism. They reportedly published nearly five million copies of their subsequent edition; people had to wait for over an hour to get the magazine, and many stories all over France had to put up a ‘sold out’ sign soon after they ran out of copies. Is that a show of resilience or chutzpah?

the ZuCkerburg-moDi after effeCtsFollowing the Prime Minister’s revolutionary launch of Digital India, he met up with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerburg, and that interview kept the nation glued to their TV screens. But the after effects of that meeting were quite scary. Zuckerburg spoke about something called Internet.org, which, when read between the lines, was heavily against net neutrality. People added a tricolour tint to their Facebook profile pictures after the controversial meet, and there was a huge debacle about how adding the tricolour tint meant supporting against net neutrality. Thankfully, this claim was based on a viral image of a code, which was later identified as a coding error.

The IOTThe IoT has been the next new rage as internet connected portable devices (primarily smartphones) eased everyday work and communication habits. The IoT can be said to work on one basic assumption, “if something can be connected, it will be connected”. After meeting Sana Shaikh, I realized peace has so many various forms. For him peace is all about waking up in the morning and hearing his engines go vroom vroom. “Every night before going to bed, I sit with my bikes and talk to them. When I met Binoy Bhatt, I remembered a quote that I once read. It said, ‘Mind is like water. When agitated, it is difficult to see what lies beneath. When settled, the answers come to surface and the purpose of life becomes clear.’ “I see to that after an interval of at least 15-20 days, I remove some time from my busy Life and go out for a small weekend. For those of you who park yourselves on the sidelines and ogle at the amazing things being done day after

day by the people around you, all the while thinking that you weren’t granted the ‘creative gene’ and you’re okay with it; let me tell you that there’s no such thing. Creativity is mysterious and unexplainable. It hasn’t been endowed to a selected few but it’s a force that we can individually or collectively work on. Creativity stems from within you. It’s what drives the process of making the world simpler, better and happier. Although, more often than not one gets caught up in a mental rut and nothing productive comes forth no matter how much you try. For trying times like those, here are a few ways to get that mind working and improve your creative thinking.

Do more than just look at the things around you. Observe everything, take it in. Really notice the colors on a person’s dress or the way someone smiles. How slowly the clouds pass through the sky or what people are really trying to say when they talk. Engage in the environment, don’t let anything be lost on you. There are possibilities everywhere, in the smallest details. Get out of your head and into what the world has to offer.

Ask a lot of questions and be eager to know what’s happening around you.

Don’t just drift through life but really get to know why things are the way they are. Be curious enough to take risks and challenge yourself with every new task. The world is a big place, there will always be more to know and do than you already are. In the words of Ray Bradbury, “Don't think. Thinking is the enemy of creativity. It's self-conscious, and anything self-conscious is lousy. You can't try to do things. You simply must do things.”

It could be a piece of writing or a painting or a new sport, whatever interests you, go do it now. Learn a few sentences in a foreign language or just talk to a stranger. It may not necessarily be a big thing, do it anyway. Once you make this a habit, your creativity starts bubbling and you’ll find yourself doing things you never thought you would be remotely interested in.

Edward De Bono said, “The need to be right all the time is the biggest barrier to new ideas.”You can’t expect every idea you think of to be a success. You need to be ready to accept failure as soon as you conceptualize something.

You can’t get bitter because the world doesn’t see the genius in your plan or if there’s someone better out there. You have to train yourself to not take failure personally.

Once in a while take some time out from your routine week. Artists are typically stereotyped as loners, although this isn’t the case. Solitude often brings out the creative genius in you. It allows you time to get in touch with yourself and reflect on your inner creative voice. "In order to be open to creativity, one must have the capacity for constructive use of solitude. One must overcome the fear of being alone," wrote the American existential psychologist Rollo May.

We often talk about passion in reference to the one thing that keeps us going, whether it's travelling or writing or sketching. It could also be more than just the one we’ve been fixated on. Develop the need to constantly learn and you’ll never cease to grow. Try your hand at whatever you get a chance to do and do it with enthusiasm and passion. Make time for work that drives you.Your work won’t turn out any better than when you’re loving what you’re doing. yi

IT’S JUST A BOY THINGI've just come back from a delightful visit to Turkey. Istanbul is beautiful, the people so hospitable, and the men - they can quite leave a lady with an identity crises, where she feels like she's Angelina Jolie or uncomfortably that she's being seen as easy game. Funny place for a woman, isn’t it? On the one hand she wants to look hot and on the other, she would prefer not to be the object of unwanted attention or pointed appraisal of her ‘assets’.

They often come on strong and sweet like their famous coffee. But this predilection is not an isolated Turkish thing or Italian or some other. It’s something a lady can encounter in our cities as much. Even enduringly married ladies meet up with uncalled for advances. Much so in our ‘modern’ urban society. Modern can have ambivalent shades. It leaves me wondering if the times have become so liberal or virtues more elastic. Even friends husbands seem inclined towards indiscretions. So how does a lady deal with this "modern" thing? How does she convey that advances are not welcome?

My friend Bella is a no-nonsense person. She says she clearly tells any "Johnny" who gets leery with a drink and loosens his inhibitions "Tcha! Man! Stop this nonsense! Come-on behave yourself!" That's fine as far as it goes, but often a drink need not be the catalyst, the modus quite subtle and the situation delicate. Such a direct response can create humiliation or at least bruised egos. You don't want that and it seems uncalled for where nothing is as obvious as to make a pointed comment. Or he's your or your partner's work colleague or ‘close friend’.

HOW TO AVERT IT Most simple is to gloss over the innuendos and pretend your IQ just does not extend to such intelligent heights. But many times this leads to greater pursuance and persistence. There comes a point where it becomes necessary to draw the line and convey

your lack of interest in a way that avoids a scene or an awkward situation. It becomes clear that it is clearly not friendship but something more overtly uncomfortable in the mind of the man.

You can try zooming in the wife, if there is one, and shower her with friendly attention. It may be a safety valve. Or bring in your partner to diffuse the 'over friendliness’. But it’s not always at a gathering of folks. It can be a work-place, a client or an associate at work, some one-to-one encounter or indeed situations that need the same dexterity as our diplomat designate to the USA.

There are those who go wringing their hands and ‘what-to-do-ing’. Or then those who fly into self-righteous umbrage and vent out the ‘injury to their good name’. Others go confiding the offense to "close friends" and create a chain of Chinesewhispers! It’s apparent that these responses leave inflammable consequences with undesirable repercussions. Constructively, one analyses the matter as having two or three considerations. You think “Well, God has made me presentable, and attentions come with the label" and you side-track the innuendos by determinedly keeping the chatter friendly and light. Or you graciously respond to them as compliments. If needed you drop friendly hints that you are committed and without saying it out aloud, indicate that "harmless" flirtation is not your scene or any friendly change of subject that works.

If the onslaught is stronger, and if the person's status is necessity-based or value-based, give it all the props to maintain esteem. Indicate you value the association or that you both have such a good work arrangement, or you value the equation with the person and you understand he is paying you a great compliment "and let's not complicate matters by intrusions that are likely to dent a good thing" and so on.

A LITTLE LESS RESERVEDA more direct approach is to mention that you are not interested. And if

some other suggestion, like dinner or a trip is mentioned, persist with “I am not interested’. Calm, composed and dignified. Not necessary to be angry or react sharply. So long as it is polite take as a compliment than getting huffy and self-righteous. Remember to keep a tone of bon homie in place. Of course, each one knows her situation best and how to evaluate the approaches and measures to take.

I don’t recommend mentioning your relationship status, because if a person is single it does not mean they are automatically available. A person has to be interested in the first place. As I see it, if the matter is truly insulting in its implications, especially if the advances include any groping or touching ,go ahead, take advantage of the privacy and render that tight slap with "I think that conveys what I think and I'm sure you don't need to speak of it to me or anyone else.”The point I’m making is that you have to decide how far it is harmless and where it is entering a space of unsavoury. Whatever be the case, you are the decision maker of where you want to take this and it is not necessary to be engaged to another man in order to make it clear that you do not wish to have anything to do with the man hitting on you. Learn to say ‘no’ politely and it will take you far in life, believe me.

My parting tip for you is this, prepare your come back incase of that come-on happens from a guy you’re not into. Being prepared makes you cool, in control of the situation and the one that will steer it to where she wishes it to go. Tell yourself what you will say and how you will say it and voila, you’re the winner.

The Mission of War

A 20 year old Bilal Siddiqi makes his author debut with this gripping crime thriller. They say the

dedication is one of the key factors that gives you an insight into the writer and Bilal wrote this one out beautifully. The book was very well researched, I must say, along with the help of the US and Indian intelligence agents and war correspondents and written under the guidance of crime writer S. Hussain Zaidi. The book revolves around Kabir Anand, an ex-RAW agent who had to forcefully leave the organization after a disastrous mission in Balochistan in 2006, and who was forcefully brought back to carry out another mission in Balochistan. This is his time to avenge not just his defamation, but also the death of his mentor and father figure – Sadiq Sheikh. Despite a number of characters and several location changes the book moves with a fast speed and smooth understanding. There is also a lovely hint of love and yes, death. So all in all, it was definitely a good read and crime-thriller readers should pick this one up for sure.In conversatIon wIth BIlal sIddIqIWho or what inspired you to write this book so early on?Around the time I had turned 17, I had a sudden growing interest in the covert world of espionage. And it

wasn't a James Bond film that drew me to this newfound interest of mine. It was, in fact, the entire talk of jihad and Islamic extremism that plagued every newspaper. Being a Muslim, I wanted to understand why I was so different from them, when ideally, we both were supposed to believe in the same set of principles? One thing led to another, and I had suddenly read a lot more than anyone else my age probably had about the subject, finding myself disagreeing with the ideology that had tweaked itself conveniently to something it was never meant to be. I wanted to create a character worth his salt, that wouldn't seem like a 'me too' of a Bond or a Bourne, but could stand his own. And what’s more, he was going to be set in the real world dealing with what could well be real situations.Are you currently working someplace or completely focused on your next book ? I was writing the book while I was still in college (St. Xaviers). I was also (and still am) working at Red Chillies Entertainment. So juggling all of it was a little difficult. I used to go to college in the morning, then work and then write in the night into the wee hours of the morning. I used to enjoy it thoroughly, despite it being extremely hectic. I don't like taking time off. I like keeping myself busy. It makes me feel better than just lazing around!Can you give us a glimpse into your next work?My next work is very different from this one. It is non-fiction and I have co-written it with Emraan Hashmi. It's about Emraan's four year old son's battle with cancer. It deals with interesting anecdotes from his life and also is very informative about cancer itself.yi
