FFrom Your Pastor . . .rom Your Pastor . . . Dear Abingdon Baptist Family, I don’t know about you, but I’m still in shock about the storms of the past couple of weeks. As the first of three tornados approached, Glenda insisted that we all go to the basement of our home. I went along to humor her, all the while repeating that mantra I had been told as a child, “We can’t have a tornado in the mountains; they protect us.” (There goes one more childhood myth.) We had no idea that just a short distance away, multiple tornados were grinding their way through the property and homes of our neighbors. We still did not know until the next morning how bad it really was. And as bad as it was in Washington County, Virginia, Tuscaloosa, Alabama had it exponentially worse. The loss of life and property was unprecedented: hundreds of deaths and whole city blocks completely wiped off the map. I watched an interview with a gentleman who had weathered one of the twisters. He said, “Even when a breeze picks up, I start to panic a little bit.” I don’t suspect that we will forget the tornados of April 27, 2011 anytime soon, but I wonder what kind of affect such a tragedy had on your faith. Did it cause you to rethink your theology of why bad things happen to good people? Did it remind you of how truly vulnerable human life is on this planet? Did it shake your faith? Was you faith renewed and your dependence on God affirmed? Perhaps a bit of all those things are going on. I hope to “unpack” some of those issues in the weeks to come. No one emerges from a “storm” like that unchanged. One of the things that drives me to distraction is when the worst things in life are attributed to “God’s will.” (As if that makes everything all right) I suppose that on one hand, giving God credit of everything that happens is an awfully powerful understanding of God’s control over the universe. On the other hand however, to say that God kills people, hurts the innocent, and destroys lives, leaves me with the image of an arbitrary and hateful God. How then does one accept a tender, forgiving, healing, loving God who, at any time may inflict unspeakable pain upon God’s creatures? Think and pray on that one for a couple of weeks. I’ll come back to that question in a couple of weeks to see if we can’t make some sense of it all. I can’t wait to see you Sunday! Your pastor and friend,

We will leave the church parking lot by 6:45a.m., so be here and on the coach at that time. The breakfast is scheduled for 7:15a.m. and we do not want to be late!! There are no extra tickets at this time.
The Senior Adult choir, Hearts of Gold, has been to Roanoke this week for the Annual Spring Senior Adult Music Festival. There are usually between two and three hundred voices in that group choir. It is a wonderful experience. Our choir of 20+ performed three selections alone. How sweet the children were handing each Mother a beautiful flower at morning worship on Mother's Day. Thank you children.
