The SiteEast side railroad tunnel of Providence, Rhode Island. The Tunnel was opened on November 16, 1908 at cost of $2 million. It runs 5,080 feet, under College Hill, from Gano Street to Benefit Street and is currently abandoned and sealed.

ProgramThe Project focused on reusing and re-adapting the abandoned tunnel into a future cinema.“How can the visitors maximize the experience of the tunnel while feeling the movie going event?”

By creating different levels throughout the tunnel and centering the design element in a core theater that expands and contracts, allowed the visitors to be situated in different levels of the tunnel and view the space in varieties of perspective.

Tunnel & Cinema

(Bottom) Oarenieni EffectRecreating the tunnel space by simply using a brown paper bag attatched to a camera. While moving the bag under different light source, the bag no longer contained the function of a bag but rather gave a feeling of an inside organ. Expanding and contracting through lighting with shadows and shapes.

Study / Final Design

(Top)As the lighting dims and the contrast increase, what seem like a bright alley way turns into a narrow contracted space.

(Right)The entrance starts from the Benefit Street and continues in 390 feet deep of the tunnel. As you enter, the preview room frames the main cinema room along with the structure of the tunnel. The seating area in the second level of the entrance allows you to view the whole space in a high lelvel. As you enter the preview room, the visitors are encountered with the expanding cinema.

ProgramSelect two different locations and create a portable “nest” for a nomad.By choosing two distinctly different locations it was a challenge to create a compact home that contained flexibility.

Two boxes that interlock each other and expand into three times biggers its original size by unfolding was a solution to the challenge. In Providence Downtown, the space folds into a compact space for more privacy and density of the site. In Cape Cod, the structure expands for maximum air space and openness.

Analyzing Flexible Forms

By Analyzing the possible needs of flexible compact home, most successful form was discovered.

The compact size allows the nomad to be enclosed in a private space secluding him/her from the

densely populated surrounding area.The home only contains the essential furnitures such as foldable

bed, small kitchen and bathroom.

The SiteWithin the heart of downtown Providence, Rhode Island is a 5 story mixed use building. 70 Kennedy Plaza currently contains a CVS store on the ground floor and four floors of residential above. The build-ing is architecturally unique because the two build-ings are connected at the first and second floors by the large triangular skylight.

ProgramThe program was divided into two sections. The first faces downtown which is to be remodeled into a hostel. The second, facing a bus station is to be transformed into a residence.

Finding Concept

Alley ways are a special space within a city. They are not planned spaces, as they are created out of the residual space left behind by constructed buildings. This space is used more as a connector and although it is narrow, the vertical element is inherently infinite.

While the buildings that create the alley ways are a contained volume, there was a connection between the travelers and the alley way in wich it was not contained or pressured by anything.

The first floor is the entrance and lobby designed as a space where visitors check in, relax, and enjoy the atmosphere that is enhanced by the glowing hanging boxes

The hostel is intended to remind visitors of an alley way in its openness from the first floor to the skylight. The hanging boxes which are rooms shared by four to eight people are tall and narrow. These are the “Spaces in between”

As travelers ascend toward the triangular skylight, the space becomes laterally compact, but vertically spacious.

The entrance is narrow and almost consumes the visitors in. As they pass the long “Alley way” like entrance, they are released into the lobby.

The hostel reminds the visitors of a alley way in its openess from first floor to the skylight.

(Right)The fourth floor is where visitors enter the hanging boxed rooms. The interior atmosphere is enhanced by the translucent glowing material of which the box is composed.

(Bottom)On the second floor, visitors experience the mass of the hanging boxes.

Space in Between: 2012 Spring

ProgramThe second part of the project was to design a residence for a family of six on the third and fourth floor of the building. The scheme is also based off of the residual “space in between”. The residence has multiple zones ranging from public to private. Com-munal areas become the “Space in Between”.

Finding Concept

Inspired by Nolli maps drawn in the 18th century, the parti model and sketches are of different contained volumes and the spaces in between.

Final Design

The most important feature of the residence is the living area that vertically connects the first and second floors. As the space becomes more communal and less private, more layers and denser “Spaces in Between” occur.

5Sushi Express: 2010 Fall

The SiteSushi Express is located on 277 Thayer Street, Providence, Rhode Island. It is has very close proximity to Brown University and RISD Campus’. Suffice to say, this area is always teeming with college kids hanging around looking for something to eat.

ProgramAn exciting sushi restaurant using linear form composed of a wooden panel structure. This structure imposes a pattern of shadows that change throughout the day. The structure also explodes out onto the street and establishes the sushi restaurant as a unique space contradictory to a seemingly monotonous Thayer Street storefront.

Concept

The scheme was exploding sushi where the linearity was emphasized by its shape and structure of the design.The wooden panels creates a pattern with shadows and changes throughout the day, and stands out between the plane buildings of Thayer street.

Process

Final

The final design mimics an exploding sushi. As one can see, the structure is the main element of the space, giving pattern and texture to the interior of the restaurant.

Communicate: 2011 Spring- 2 Layers Deep- Secret- Friendship that will never work

2 layers deepIn every relationship, communication is key. Whether one is smiling, frowning, or crying, facial expression can mask true feelings within. This mask functions as a guessing game where the people outside of the mask is to guess what the subject is thinking; pass the mask, pass the facial expression.

Secret Left side of the mask (only the eye area) is opened to the puplic, while the right side us completely enclosed. The viewers are to wear the mask and are situated in an environment where they can watch out for the public while sharing their secret.

Friendship that will never workThe purple mask only has the ability to speak while the yellow mas has the ability to see and hear the opponent. The mouthpeice of the yellow hangs down to the chest to stop from his/her voice to be heard by purple. Thus, it is a friendship that will never work.
