Year 10 Science classes got to playwith the Van De Graaff generator as

part of their topic on electricity. Aspinning rubber belt inside the

generator causes an electric chargeto build up in the dome. If a personholds the dome they also become

charged. Since like charges repel, thehairs on the person’s head are pushed

away from each other and thesimilarly-charged dome, causing them

to stand up.

Students in Ms Stewart’syear 8 class are learning

about the digestive system.As a part of this, they made

a working model of thehuman digestive system.

The model started with ahealthy breakfast of

weetbix and fruit, whichfollowing

digestion ended closelyresembling something you

might see in the toilet.

Top 10 tips for Year 10 studentschoosing their HSC Courses

1. Choose HSC courses you’re goodat and interested in, and will lay afoundation for your future plans.2. Choose courses best suited toyour ability. Don’t choose coursesjust because of scaling or becauseyou think they will give you abetter ATAR.3. Make the link between yourchoice now and where you want togo after Year 12.4. Check if the university you wantto go to (and/or the course youwant to do) has prerequisites andassumed knowledge.5. If you want an ATAR, make sureyou will be eligible.6. Depending on what you study,marks around 70 in the HSC couldlead to an ATAR in the 50s, whilemarks closer to 80 could lead to anATAR of 80.00. This is becausemost students have marksbetween 70 and 80 so when youare ranked that group easilyspreads out.7. If you are getting marks in the70s do your best to get closer to 80– it will make a big difference toyour ATAR.8. Remember that universitiesoften increase your selection rankin recognition of your performancein particular HSC courses (usuallyfor Bands 4 and above).9. If you’re not sure what levelMathematics and English to take,choose the level that suits yourability and future plans. You will notnecessarily get a higher ATAR justby studying a lower level course,and universities don’t alwaysincrease your selection rank toreward your performance in thelower level courses, no matter howwell you do. Also checkprerequisites in case you need toget a certain performance band.10. To maximise your ATAR youhave to make good choices aboutwhat to study, work to the best ofyour ability and work towardsyour goals for life after school.

SKILLS AND THRILLS DIGITAL PARENTS SHOWCASE

The Skills and Thrills Digital Parents Showcase is an engaging and informative 20 minute video createdto highlight Vocational Education and Training (VET) and the success stories that emanate

from VET pathways. The Digital Parents Showcase will help parents better understand vocationalpathways, including apprenticeships/traineeships and school-based apprenticeships/traineeships,

and gives parents the knowledge they need to help their children make informed career choices posthigh school.

SkillsOne has created a free video that parents can access as well as a live streamed Q&A paneldiscussion on the SkillsOne Facebook page on August 26 2020. Industry and education professionals

will be available to answer parents’ pre-submitted questions. Skills and Thrills Digital Parent Showcase is an initiative funded by the NSW Department of Education -

Learning and Teaching Directorate (Secondary Education).

Studies

After a few technical hiccups the case was underway. Wauchope was the prosecution in a case where thedefendant was charged with DUI. This person was observed driving erratically by our two witnesses whowere police officers. These officers were Larnah Smith and Laura Bennetts. They were well prepared and

gave compelling evidence against the “drunk driver”.Matt Gibbs as Barrister One opened our case well, outlining the relevant facts. He also did a good job inextracting the evidence from the police officer and cross examining the defendant. Barrister Two, Piper

Theofanou did an outstanding job in cross examining the second defence witness by having them admitthat the defendant was “smashed” on the night in question. Thus, cased closed. They were ably supportedby Solicitor, Grace Flood, who was able to come up with incisive questions to ask the opposing witnesses

and displayed a good grasp of the facts of the case.

The Court Officer Marie Ely, organised the courtroom well, particularly under the unusual circumstancesin which the Trial took place. Wauchope managed to score a conviction “beyond reasonable doubt” and,

more importantly won the Trial. All the team are congratulated for their performance under COVID 19restrictions. At one point there were 11 computers in operation which, for Mr Houlahan, was a logisticalnightmare. Special thanks go to our illustrious Librarian Mrs Howell for her technical help leading up to

and on the day of the Trial.A big thank you to Mr Mark Hanlon, founder and

director of Lambtonlaw, Newcastle for adjudicating the case and giving the students valuable feedbackat the end of the Trial.

The Wauchope High School teamentered the modern age when it

participated in the Mock Trial againstSt Columba Anglican School last

Friday. This Trial was held via Zoom.Wauchope was in the school library,St Columba was in Port Macquarie

and the Judge was in Lambton,Newcastle.

Congratulations to former Wauchope High School studentJacob Johnston, who was recently awarded the Friends of

the ABC Armidale Media Prize.

Jacob studied at the University of New England, andreceived the award for having the highest Grade PointAverage (GPA) in his graduating cohort of Media and

Communications students.

2020 MATHEMATICSCOMPETITION

It is now time to enter the ICAS Mathematics Competition, which will be held in the School Library onThursday, 3rd September (Term 3, Week 7). All students receive a Certificate (High Distinction, Distinction, Credit, Merit or Participation) and anindividual Student Report indicating which questions they answered correctly, as well as the averagemark for their state. The Student Report is useful for highlighting student strengths and weaknessesin the skills and processes of mathematics. The documents are suitable for inclusion in a portfolio.Parents can also view detailed results online. The cost to students is $6.00, which needs to be paid to the Front Office by Friday, 21st August (Week 5). The P&C and the Mathematics Faculty are subsidising the balance of the $14.50 entry fee.
