ZINAIDA KYRYLIVNA GAYDUK was born on 22 September 1937 in Zaporizhzhya, where, as a matter of fact, she lived all her life. She was born in a large family and had four brothers. The Gayduks enjoyed a very modest competence, lived plainly, and to top it all, they had to roam the neighboring villages during World War II until they could move to the city again in 1947. Quite naturally, these first experiences and impressions the little girl gained from conversing with native steppe land were of particular importance for the artist and poetess to-be.

Nothing else but this rural landscape, which she regarded as her true Homeland, became determinative in the world view of the paintress to-be, sank deep into her heart, and became the main theme of all her verses and canvases… Here is how she recollected these days: “There were not only fears and hardships in our childhood. Our little bare feet with red spots ran on wet grass, our hands plucked field flowers and twined wreaths of mallows, larkspurs, cornflowers, wild vetches, and each new day brought some discoveries, it thrilled and excited. The road which led to the horizon, where the ground melted into the sky, invited to far-flung countries… How right Taras Shevchenko was when he said that “there is no better heaven than the heaven on earth”.

It fell out that an artist with a singular gift of a lyrical poet already dwelt in the little girl’s heart. She was destined not only to paint beautiful landscapes but also to write delicate, tuneful verses, where luxuriates the melodious Ukrainian language, filled with vigor and true pathos...

«Galerie Les Noms» презентує колекцію робіт української художниці другої половини ХХ ст. Зінаїди Гайдук (1937-2012). Дане видання є першим дослідженням мистецької долі худож-ниці та найбільш повною збіркою її творчого доробку.

Тільки справжній митець здатний глибоко збаг-нути та нескінченно оспівувати красоту всього, що його оточує. Саме до таких справжніх митців відноситься і Зінаїда Гайдук. ЇЇ любов до рідного краю знаходить своє відображення в творчій спадщині, що особливо відчувається в розгорнутих панорамних краєвидах Дніпра та Хортиці, немов написаних серцем. З особли-вим захопленням художниця писала проникли-во-ліричні натюрморти з квітами, в яких власне унікальне сприйняття кольору поєднувалося із традиціями постімпресіонізму.

INTRODUCTION

“Galerie Les Noms” presents the collection of works of Zinaida Gayduk (1937-2012), a Ukrain-ian paintress of the latter haft of the 20th cen-tury. This edition is the first study of artistic career of the paintress and the fullest collection of her oeuvres.

Only a true artist can gain a deep insight of and never cease to praise the beauty of everything that surrounds him. Zinaida Gayduk is one of such true artists. Her love of the native land is re-flected in her artistic legacy. It is particularly felt in the stretched-out panoramic views of Dnieper and Khortytsia, as though painted with her heart. She was particularly enthusiastic about painting profoundly lyrical still lives with flowers, where her own unique color perception amalgamated with the traditions of postimpressionism.

Analysis of Zinaida Gayduk’s oeuvre allows us both to trace how her painting manner and style were formed and to give an eye to the influ-ence and creative pursuits of the Zaporizhzhian school of painting, which at that very point laid the groundwork of its painting language.

Individual creative manner of Zinaida Gayduk is characterized by ornamentality. Generalization of forms, value of colors – all this imparts a par-ticular expressiveness to her paintings which em-phasizes the Zinaida’s affiliation with the studio of Georgiy Kolosovsky, an outstanding painter who directly influenced the establishment of artistic center.

Although the paintress had lived all her live in Zaporizhzhya and almost never moved from this city, she delicately caught and expressed the intonation of the Ukrainian culture and wholly concentrated on the quest for the beautiful. Despite the life of hardships and personal trag-edies, all her oeuvre is saturated with this sense of beauty. Zinaida Gayduk was overwhelmed with an irrepressible thirst for creation, which she outpoured in painting and in poetry.

The collection of works of Zinaida Gayduk, which is published in this catalogue, allows the wide public to get acquainted with the cultural herit-age of Ukraine and encourages further study of the paintress’s oeuvre.

«Я сьогодні вище На щабель ступила І до Бога ближче, І дещо зробила.»

Зінаїда Кирилівна Гайдук народилася 22 ве-ресня 1937 року в місті Запоріжжі, де, власне, і прожила все своє життя. Вона народилась у великій родині, в якій було ще й четверо братів. Сім’я мала досить скромні статки, жили всі скромно, а ще й до того поневірялась по навко-лишнім селам в часи Другої світової війни, поки знов у 1947 році перебрались знов у місто. І звичайно, особливо важливими для майбутньої художниці і поетеси стали якраз ці перші дитячі враження, що вона отримала у дитинстві від спілкування з рідним степовим краєм.

Тільки цей сільський виднокруг, який вона і вва-жала своєю справжньою Батьківщиною, став вирішальним у світогляді майбутньої художниці, запав у душу, став головною темою всіх її віршів і полотен… Так вона про це згадує: «Але було дитинство, у якому не тільки страхи, та непри-ємності. Наші дитячі босі в ціпках ноги бігали по мокрій траві, наші руки рвали польові квіти і плели віночки з калачиків, сокирок, волошок, дикого горошку, і кожен день приносив якісь відкриття, хвилював. Дорога, яка вела до гори-зонту, де земля зливалася з небом, манила у голубу даль… Яку рацію мав Тарас Григорович, коли казав нам, що немає краще раю, ніж на землі».

Так сталося, що в душі дівчинки вже жив худож-ник, та ще з особливим ліричним даром поета. Їй судилося писати не тільки чудові краєвиди і натюрморти, але й ніжні, мелодійні вірші, де розкошує, сповнена сили, і справжнього па-фосу, співуча українська мова.

Але головними людьми в житті Зінаїди стали на-віть не батьки, а головним став її рідний старший брат, що згодом став досвіченим художником, Віктор Гайдук. Ось як вона згадує про це: «З усіх моїх братів мій брат Віктор – народився в 1926 році, — відомий художник пейзажист. Його твори експонувались в Великобританії, Франції, Польщі, Іспанії (Барселона). Брат дуже любив Тараса Григоровича Шевченко, знав безліч його віршів, і часто їх декламував. Любив і Івана Котляревського; художник Анатолій Базилевич, ілюструючи «Енеїду», зобразив якраз тоді в об-разі козака Енея нашого Віктора з портретною схожістю. Брат був дуже гарний: голубі очі, чор-нобровий, стрункий – такий справжній запо-

ріжський козак; а ще Базилевич використував зовнішній образ Віктора в творі Гоголя «Тарас Бульба», здається, в зображенні сина Остапа» — згадує Зінаїда.

Запоріжжя – це велике, перш за все, індустрі-альне місто, з промисловими гігантами загаль-носоюзного значення, і де, звичайно, тоді не було традиційного, сталого творчого осередку. Власного міського художнього життя там також не було,- а тим паче в ті далекі вже 50-60 роки. Художникам в цьому місті доводилось з вели-кими труднощами розширювати професійні горизонти, щоб бути на рівні з художниками зі столиць, де була належна можливість учитись школі живопису, сприймати новітні віяння і успішно експонувати свої твори.

Це зараз здається дивним, але на 50-ті роки був у місті Запоріжжі єдиний майстер, що мав вищу художню освіту – це живописець Георгій Колосовський. Про особистість Колосовського хочеться сказати окремо, адже цей майстер мав вирішальний стилістичний вплив на запо-різький творчий осередок. Він вчився живопису в 30-ті роки в Одеському художньому інституті, де викладачами були у нього визначні художни-ки Павло Волокідін, Теофіл Фраєрман, Олексій Шовкунеко. І тоді, і донині вони яскраві творчі особистості, а зараз це ще й визнані класики, що глибоко і світоглядно вплинули на молодого студента, та сформували його творче кредо. А з Олексієм Шовкуненко, що згодом став відомим професором Київського художнього інституту, Колосовський буде підтримувати дружні стосунки і пізніше, аж до 1970-х років.

Дуже важливим майстром, який вирішально вплинув на художню манеру Георгія Коло-совського, став класик російського, ще навіть дореволюційного живопису Леонард Туржанський (1875-1945). Було це в 1944році в Нальчику, де Колосовський служив у війську, а Туржанський знаходився в евакуації. Деякий час художники працювали пліч-о-пліч, на одному мотиві. Основні естетичні та стильові засади картини, картини- пейзажу як само-стійного жанру, молодий художник перейняв у заслуженого класика. Це — тип левітанівського і коровінського пейзажів, з його демократичні-стю і скромністю мотиву. Такий пейзаж також відзначався тонкістю колориту, і пастозністю виконання. Головне в таких пейзажах – свіжість живого враження, уважність і любов до нату-ри, перенесення на полотно всього того, що оточує художника, неначе і не докладаючи помітних зусиль для виявлення художнього в природі. І виразом таких багатозначних думок і відчуттів художника на природі могла стати тільки картина. Вишукана простота таких робіт була результатом строгого відбору, узагаль-

But the main persons in Zinaida’s life were not her parents. Her No. 1 was her elder brother, Viktor Gayduk, who, as time went on, became a pro-ficient painter. She recollected: “Of all my broth-ers, my brother Viktor, born in 1926, is a famous landscape painter. His works were exhibited in Great Britain, France, Poland, Spain (Barcelona). My brother liked Taras Shevchenko very much, and he knew a lot of Shevchenko’s verses and often recited them. Ivan Kotliarevsky also was his favorite poet. Painter Anatoliy Bazylevych, who made illustrations for “Eneida”, depicted our Vik-

tor as Cossack Eney and it was a life-like portrait. My brother was very handsome: blue-eyed, dark-browed, slim, – a true Zaporizhzhian Cossack. Later, Bazylevych used Viktor’s looks to depict Ostap, the son of Taras Bulba in the Gogol’s “Taras Bulba”.

Zaporizhzhya was (and still is) a large, and first of all, industrial city with giant works and plants of national significance. Naturally, it was far from being a traditional, well-established creative center. It had no own artistic life, especially in those already distant 1950s-1960s. The painters living in this city were faced with great difficulties trying to broaden their professional horizons in order to be on a par with their colleagues from the capital, who had the opportunity to study the art of painting, to acquire all up-to-date trends and tendencies and to successfully exhibit their works.

It may seem strange today, but then, in the 1950s, there was only one painter with higher artistic ed-ucation in Zaporizhzhya: Georgiy Kolosovsky. This person is worth individual mentioning, because this master had a crucial stylistic influence on the creative circles of Zaporizhzhya. He studied paint-ing in the 1930s at the Odesa Art Institute, where he was taught by such notable painters as Pavlo Volokidin, Teofil Frayerman, Oleksiy Shovkunenko. Recognized classics today, these creative per-sons had deeply and ideologically influenced the young student and shaped his artistic credo. With Oleksiy Shovkunenko, who later became a noted professor at the Kyiv Art Institute, Kolosovsky maintained friendly relations up to the 1970s.

Another very important master, who had a cru-cial influence on the artistic manner of Georgiy Kolosovsky, was Leonard Turzhansky (1875-1945), a classic of the Russian painting. It was in 1944 in Nalchik, where Kolosovsky served in the army, and where Turzhansky was evacuated to. For a while the painters worked shoulder to shoulder, using one motif. The young artist adopted from the distinguished painter the main aesthetic and stylistic principles of painting, in particular, of landscape as a genre painting. It was a kind of Levitan’s and Korovin’s landscape, with its demo-cratic and modest motif. This landscape was also distinguished by a delicate coloring and pastose rendering. The chief thing about such landscapes is the freshness of vivid impression, attentiveness and affection towards nature, transference of everything that surrounds the painter to the can-vas as though making no noticeable efforts to reveal art in the nature. Only a painting could ex-press meaningful thoughts and feelings of an artist in nature’s lap. The refined simplicity of such works was the result of strict selection, generalization. As Turzhansky taught, when painting a landscape,

нення. І в пейзажі треба завжди тяжіти, як вчила школа Туржанського, до особливо підкресле-ної виразності форм, об’ємів, простору. І ще треба навчитись мислити і відчувати кольором у гармонічній його єдності…

Завдяки «школі Колосовського», збагаченій згодом ще й виразними художніми прийома-ми французьської школи постімпресіонізму, і сформувалась згодом творча манера багатьох запорізьких художників, в тому числі живописців Віктора і Зінаїди Гайдук.

Якраз Георгій Колосовський взяв найактивнішу участь у створенні Запорізького товариства художників, а згодом і обласної Спілки худож-ників УРСР. Крім того, художник Колосовський започатковує в своїй майстерні приватну малярську студію, в якій вчились більшість запо-різьких художників від 1950-х аж по «покоління сімдесятих». Якраз цю студію відвідували Віктор і Зінаїда Гайдук. А в 1957 році вона закінчила студію Запорізького товариства художників, діставши у Георгія Колосовського базові фахові знання. Треба сказати, що вони були дійсно фундаментальними і мабуть, були вартими в чомусь навіть і рівня столичного вузу… Згодом, з 1963 року молода художниця працювала на Запорізькому художньо-виробничому комбінаті, відтоді й активно виставлялась на багаточисельних виставках, як обласних, так і республіканських.

Головними темами робіт Зінаїди Гайдук були пейзаж і натюрморт з квітами. І пейзаж, і квіти писались на особливій ліричній ноті, можна сказати, в особливому стані повноти душі… Це й надає такої особливової, непідробленої мистецької цінності її полотнам.

В українській образотворчості саме пейзаж найчастіше виступав засобом осмислення не тільки національного простору, носієм етичних, емоційних, духовних переживань, а й цариною, де безпосередньо вирішувалися живописні завдання і проблеми. Художницею були ство-рені чисельні натурні пейзажі-етюди, що постій-но відкрито писались на природі, найчастіше літньої пори, де так відчутне захоплення красою рідного краєвиду, і де властиве їй обдарування колориста поєднувалось з глибоко зрозумілим і внутрішньо пережитим реальним мотивом. Надзвичайно плідним у її творчості стали кінець 70-початок 1980-х років, коли Зінаїдою були написані всі її визначальні роботи.

Принциповим тут було і традиційне звернення до натурного живописного етюду, як до най-безпосереднішого способу сприйняття і відтво-рення природи, що зберігав свіжість і щирість авторського бачення та емоційність власного

переживання. Робота над етюдом не обме-жувалась фіксацією реального мотиву, тільки його протокольною натуралістичною копією, а супроводжувалася аналізом та відбором його визначальних рис, художньою, довільною обра-зно-пластичною інтерпретацією, що надавала фрагментові природи особливого ліричного звучання. Не випадково стосовно цих творів можна часто говорити і про певний етюд-кар-тину, що ніс в собі емоційну виразність і широкі пластичні узагальнення. Це означає — пляму, контур, масу, зональний перехід регістрів. А глядач у прояві матеріальності живопису і ко-льору справедливо вбачає один з проявів його правди і новоявленої краси.

Ідеалом живопису стає визначеність компо-зиції, чіткість малюнку, і по-новому побачений, ще й з точки зору імпресіонізму, реалістично згармонізований колорит. В такому пейзажі, як і у мистецтві взагалі, цінується безпосередність, правдивість, щирість, виразність деталі і цілого. Серед її робіт – чисті етюди, де природа Цен-тральної України постає у багатстві насичених авторським сприйняттям форм і барв, жит-тєвості її глибоко відчутої візуальної структури, щедро одухотвореної художником. А також пейзажі- жанри, де невидима, але відчутна присутність людини та уважна кольорова вибу-дова простору надають йому певної сюжетної оповідності, перетворюючи їх на своєрідні особистностні живописні новели, своєрідні ліричні звернення до глядача. Це композиції з обов’язково високим обрієм, та великим се-реднім планом, з прагненням досягти якісної цілісності ущільненого простору, стилістика, яка впевнено увійшла в живопис із пластичною проблематикою постімпресіонізму, надання переваги горизонтальним побудовам, поступ до панорамності, захвату простору, розкутості композиції, де змальований пейзаж постає особливим виокремленим та щасливо поба-ченим фрагментом якогось величного навко-лішного світу.

Її композиції тяжіють до площинності, до того рівномірного напруження всього полотна, що не залишає в ньому пластично порожніх місць, де все несе на собі рівноцінне кольорове та просторове навантаження. «Все у всьому». Вона пише густо, пастозно, відверто насолоджуючись дорогоцінною фарбою, що так натхненно і легко ліпить форми і об’єми. А її кольори – предметні, матеріальні і умовні одночас: то форсовано яскраві, то складно і мудро згармонізовані, але об’єднані ідеєю кольорово-просторової ціліс-ності, життєво-реальної і декоративно-виразної. Живопис Зінаїди Гайдук взагалі програмно-де-коративний… Яскравий, напружений, насиче-ний колір втілює родючу силу природи, її стихійне енергетичне наповнення.

the artist should always be strongly attracted by a particularly emphatic expressiveness of form, size, space. And another thing: one should learn to think and feel by color in its harmonious unity...

Thanks to the skills acquired from the “Kolosovsky’s school” and later enriched with expressive artistic methods of the French school of postimpression-ism, many Zaporizhzhian painters, including Viktor and Zinaida Gayduk, had formed their artistic manner and style. It was Georgiy Kolosovsky who took the most active part in the creation of the Zaporizhzhya Association of Artists, and later on – the Regional Union of Artists of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Re-public. Furthermore, Kolosovsky set up a private painting workshop in his studio, where the majority of Zaporizhzhian painters had been studying from the 1950s up to “the generation of the seventies”. Viktor and Zinaida Gayduk attended this work-shop as well. In 1957, Zinaida completed her stud-ies at the Zaporizhzhya Association of Artists after having acquired basic professional knowledge from Georgiy Kolosovsky. It should be said that these scholastic attainments were in very deed fundamental and, perhaps, in some respect were on a par with the expertise one could acquire at higher education institutions of the capital... Later on, from 1963, the young paintress had been work-ing at the Zaporizhzhya Art and Industry Enterprise. Since then, she had been actively exhibited both at regional and republican exhibitions.

Zinaida Gayduk painted mainly landscapes and still lives with flowers. Both landscapes and flow-ers were painted on a particular lyrical note, one might say, in a special state of plenitude of the heart... It gives her canvases this particular, genu-ine artistic value. In the Ukrainian fine arts, it was landscape that was most commonly used as a vehicle for percep-tion of not only the national expanse, carrier of ethical, emotional, spiritual experience, but also a mission field where pictorial tasks and problems were solved. Zinaida painted a great number of plain-air life landscapes – studies, most of which depict summer and clearly transmit the artist’s ad-miration for the beauty of the native land. In these paintings, Zinaida’s talent of colorist amalgamat-ed with a deeply apprehensible and heart-wiring true-life motif. The late 1970s and the early 1980s were exceptionally fruitful, all key oeuvres of the paintress were executed in this period.

What was also essential here was that the artist traditionally turned to pictorial study from nature as the most straightforward way to perceive and reproduce the nature which preserved the origi-nality and genuineness of the author’s vision and the emotionality of own experience. Working on a study was not limited to capturing a real motif,

merely its perfunctory naturalistic copy, but was accompanied with analysis and selection of its key features, an artistic, voluntary figurative and plastic interpretation, which imparted a particular lyrical tone to the piece of nature. There is a good reason that these oeuvres may be very often described as certain studies-paintings which carry emotional expression and broad plastic gener-alizations. This means a smear, a contour, a bulk, a zonal shift of keys. And in this manifestation of materiality of painting the viewer fairly finds one of exhibitions of its truth and new-sprung beauty.

Definiteness of composition, sharpness of picture, and a realistically harmonized coloration seen in a new light and from the viewpoint of impression-ism to boot, become the ideal of painting. Such landscape, like the arts in broad terms, is valued for its ingenuousness, truthfulness, genuineness, expression of the details and the whole. There are genuine studies among Zinaida’s oeuvres, in which the nature of the central Ukraine appears in the plenitude of forms and colors filled with the author’s perception, the vitality of its deeply perceived visual structure generously inspired by the artist. There are also landscapes – genre paintings, with invisible but still perceptive human presence and a careful color composition of the space that give it certain narrative features by converting them into a kind of individual painted novellas, a kind of lyrical address to the viewer. These compositions necessarily have a high sky-line and a large middle distance, with aspiration to achieve a qualitative integrality of thickened space, – the stylistics which masterfully came to stay in pictorial art with the plastic topics of postimpressionism, giving preference to horizontal compositions, a tread toward panoramic repre-sentation, seizure of space, uncoiled composition, where the painted landscape comes across as a particular, separate and happily seen piece of some magnificent outside world.

Zinaida’s compositions incline to planeness, to that even tension of the entire canvas which leaves no plastically blank space on it, where every smallest detail bears an equal color and space load. “Everything’s in everything”. She paints thickly, pastosely, professedly enjoying the precious paint which sculpts shapes and size with such inspiration, passion and legerity. Her colors are presentive, material and conditional all at the same time: now forcedly bright, then intricately and intelligently harmonized, but knitted by the idea of color and space integrity, – both live and real, and decoratively expressive. In a broad manner, Zinaida Gayduk’s paintings are topically decorative... Bright, dramatic, intense color incar-nates the prolific power of nature, its elemental energetic filling.

Важливо також те, що її мотив побачено під дійсно поетичним кутом зору. Він відразу поба-чений як поезія… Так, одномиттєвий, реальний мотив наче втрачає свою випадковість, пере-творюючись на синтез всіх можливих станів, мінливостей, вражень, і міняється відтінками, настроями, почуттями.

В її роботах також присутнє стихійне тяжіння до деякого декоративного символізму, та до певної вигадливої казковості в трактуванні сю-жетних мотивів. Вона справжній живописець, що тонко відчуває складні тональні сполучення і просторово-колористичну структуру живо-писних побудов, що здатні надати життєвої та художньої переконливості найбуденнішому мотиву. Наче на противагу її творчому мето-дові, в ті радянські часи стверджувалась єдина для всіх без виключення форма вислову, що базувалася на чіткому сухуватому малюнку, ясній і банальній композиції та тій невиразній стертості прийому, яка називалась «школою», і що створювало єдину, обов’язкову для всіх манеру письма, яка вирізнялася принциповою «забруднененістю» кольору та безособовою невиразністю мазка. І яким же дивним і чудо-вим здавався тоді всім насичений кольоризм її пейзажів і натюрмортів…

Традиції імпресіонізму і постімпресіонізму, які утверджували в живописі першорядність інди-відуальності художника, саме коло їх мотивів ( будь-яких — простих, жанрово- побутових, пей-зажних) були надзвичайно важливими тоді для вітчизняної культури, що намагалися подолати офіційну колективну безособовість, естетичні стереотип про якусь таку важливу вигадану особливу партійність мистецтва і замовлену передовицями газет політичну свідомість худож-ника у виборі сюжетів… Традиції імпресіонізму і постімпресіонізму, як великого етапу світової культури, наголошували на значущості кожного окремого художника, кожного «мотиву», що навіювала природа.

Особливо хочеться сказати про натюрморти Зінаїди Гайдук. Вони прекрасні. Здається, що саме цими букетами квітів, щедрим розма-їттям плодів земних художниця виспівала всю свою душу. Яка в них обережна і чуттєва орке-стровка кольору, радість і справжнє піднесен-ня від такої краси… «А квіти, а їхні неповторні аромати… Я не надаю переваги жодній квітці, бо кожна, від самої дрібнесенької до випесту-ваної чиїмись руками, елітної, має в собі щось неповторне, дивовижне. І не знаходиться слів, щоб пояснити, звідки ця краса взялася на землі, хто обдарував такою красою нашу землю. Не вистачає фарб на палітрі, щоб хоч частково відобразити на полотні те, що оточує тебе…» — пише в спогадах художниця.

Натюрморти Зінаїди Гайдук втілюють найкращі традиції колоризму української національної школи живопису. Там вбачається і обережна грубувата ніжність до квітів, що так відчуваєть-ся на полотні у простої колгоспниці-селянки Катерини Білокур, і… водночас особливо рафінована французська школа бачення, як у імпресіоніста Огюста Ренуара. Квіти, яблука, порцелянові вази і полив’яні глечики, святкові драпіровки, здається, співають оду пишноті всім природнім плодам і явищам. Як міцне ціле, всі предмети на площині то виокремлені конту-ром, то об’єднані, вплавлені єдиним танучим переходом колір-в-колір. Вони цікаво також об’єднані композиційним розташуванням – рухливим, динамічним, доцільним і тактовним по кольоровій гамі, але ніколи не байдужим чи статичним, неживим. В цих духм’яних вишука-них букетах і дотепер, здається живе і радіє її душа.

Поставили ми натюрмортМи з братом писати.Квіти жовті, голубі, Гладенькі, кошлаті.І великі поміж них, І дуже маленькі.Поруч два яблука червоних…

Зінаїда Гайдук працювала в живописі доти, поки був живий і поруч неї її улюблений брат. Ві-ктор пішов з життя в 65 років, і горе втрати стало занадто тяжким для молодшої сестри. Зінаїда після 1992 року вже не бралась за живопис. Після тяжкої втрати більше не змогла малювати, як колись, ні урочистих квіток, ні мрійливих пей-зажів… Були ще у неї потім вірші, і були в Києві видано дві поетичні збірочки, з такими її чудови-ми, неспокійними, співучими, майже народ-ними по настроям ліричними поезіями. А вона жила ще двадцять років після Віктора, жила собі одна в хаті, багато хворіла, згодом пере-сувалась на милицях, втрачала поступово зір. І згадувала, як тоді колись у дитинстві — «дорога вела до горизонту, де земля зливалась з небом, і манила в голубу даль, і як хотілося дізнатися, що там, за селом. Так хотілося дізнатися, і дуже довго долалася ця дорога, долається і досі, але до горизонту вона так і не дійшла»…

It is also important that her motif was seen in really poetic perspective. And it was seen as poetry at once ... As though the single real motif loses its randomness and transforms into a synthesis of all possible states, inconstancies, impressions, and it changes in shades, dispositions, feelings.

Zinaida’s oeuvres contain the elemental attrac-tion to a kind of decorative symbolism and to a certain inventive fabulousness in interpretation of narrative motifs. She is a true painter who has a fine appreciation of complex tonal junctures and space-and-color structure of pictorial composi-tions, which are able to lend realism and artistic power to the most ordinary motif. As though in opposition to her artistic method, a uniform form of expression was approved at Soviet times for all painters without exceptions and was based on a clear-cut dryish picture, straightforward and trite composition and the inexpressive blurring of tech-nique which was called “school”, and which set a uniform and obligatory on all manner of painting that was distinguished by a basic impurity of color and impersonal inexpressiveness of strokes. And how quaint and beautiful everybody found the rich coloring of her landscapes and still lives...

The traditions of impressionism and postimpres-sionism, which strengthened the paramount significance of an artist’s individuality in painting, the range of their motifs (any: simple, genre, land-scape), were particularly important then for the national culture that was striving to overcome the official collective impersonality, the esthetic ste-reotype of some kind of essential made-up spe-cial party spirit in the arts and a painter’s political consciousness engaged by newspaper editorials delineating the choice of subjects... The traditions of impressionism and postimpressionism as a great stage in development of the world culture, em-phasized the significance of each individual artist, each motif inspired by the nature.

Still lives of Zinaida Gayduk are worth particular mentioning. They are beautiful. It seems that the paintress sang her soul with these bunches of low-ers, generous diversity of fruits of the earth. They are notable for careful and sensual orchestration of color, joy and true excitement over such beauty... In her memoirs Zinaida wrote: “And flowers, their exceptional fragrance... I do not give preference to any flower because each one, from the small-est to the most cherished by someone’s hands, elite, has something unique, marvelous about itself. And words fail to explain where this beauty came from on earth, who bountied our land with such beauty. The palette lacks paints to depict on the canvas, at least partially, the beauty that surrounds you...”

Still lives of Zinaida Gayduk embody the best col-

oring traditions of the Ukrainian national school of painting. They show careful and somewhat rough fondness for flowers, which is so apparent on the canvas of an ordinary collective farmer – peas-ant woman Kateryna Bilokur, and... at the same time, a particularly refined French school of vision, like that of impressionist Auguste Renoir. Flow-ers, apples, china vases and glazed jugs, festal drapes, – all seem to sing an ode to splendor for all natural fruits and phenomena. Like a solid whole, all subjects on the flat are now outlined, then amalgamated, alloyed in one melting color-into-color junction. They are also united by the compositional arrangement – agile, dynamic, rational and tactful by color palette, but never indifferent or static, never lifeless. It seems that her soul still lives and rejoices in these fragrant refined bunches.

Zinaida Gayduk painted as long as her beloved brother lived and was beside her. Viktor passed away at the age of 65, and the grief of loss be-came too heavy for the younger sister. Since 1992, Zinaida had never touched her paintbrush. After the bereavement she could no longer paint either festive flowers or dreamy landscapes as she did once... She wrote poetry, and two collections of her verses were published in Kyiv, both containing her beautiful, uneasy, melodious, almost folk by their mood lyrical poesies. And she lived twenty more years after Viktor, alone in her house. She was plagued by poor health and with the lapse of time she could get about but on crutches. In addition, her sight was going. Zinaida recollected as at one time in her childhood, “..the road led to the horizon where the ground melted into the sky, invited to far-flung countries, and we were wondering what was there, outside the village. We were dying to know, and it took us a very long time to cope with this road, and I still do, but it never reached the horizon”...

ZINAIDA KYRYLIVNA GAYDUK was born on 22 September 1937 in Zaporizhzhya, where, as a matter of fact, she lived all her life. She was born in a large family and had four brothers. The Gayduks enjoyed a very modest competence, lived plainly, and to top it all, they had to roam the neighboring villages during World War II until they could move to the city again in 1947. Quite naturally, these first experiences and impressions the little girl gained from conversing with native steppe land were of particular importance for the artist and poetess to-be.

Nothing else but this rural landscape, which she regarded as her true Homeland, became determinative in the world view of the paintress to-be, sank deep into her heart, and became the main theme of all her verses and canvases… Here is how she recollected these days: “There were not only fears and hardships in our childhood. Our little bare feet with red spots ran on wet grass, our hands plucked field flowers and twined wreaths of mallows, larkspurs, cornflowers, wild vetches, and each new day brought some discoveries, it thrilled and excited. The road which led to the horizon, where the ground melted into the sky, invited to far-flung countries… How right Taras Shevchenko was when he said that “there is no better heaven than the heaven on earth”.

It fell out that an artist with a singular gift of a lyrical poet already dwelt in the little girl’s heart. She was destined not only to paint beautiful landscapes but also to write delicate, tuneful verses, where luxuriates the melodious Ukrainian language, filled with vigor and true pathos...
