Freedom from EGYPT! Free Agents – FREEDOM FOR SERVICE!

Our ancestors were led from EGYPT to freedom by God’s servant MOSES! Rejoice and be glad! Our ancestors were led from slavery to sin to freedom in JESUS CHRIST by the Holy Spirit of God, by the martyrs and saints, by faithful pastors and teachers, by parents and families, and by friends and neighbors of faith. Rejoice and be glad! Celebrate life! Our ancestors were led to worship and serve the “One True God;” and planted a Lutheran congregation in Landisville 101 years ago.

Now recognizing our freedom in Christ, we read Romans 12:6: “So we are to use our different gifts in accordance with the grace that God has given us.” We are to be an active, FUNCTIONING part of the Body of Christ gathered at Zion. Our ministry teams conducted the FIRST ZION FREE-AGENT DRAFT FOR MISSION on the Sundays of July 18th and 25th. Study the Zion Mission Statement printed at the end of this message. Review your own “time, talent, and treasure” and prayerfully consider the gifts you bring to your ministry team. God will lead you to see where you are “fit for service.” We spent a week in EGYPT (called Vacation Bible School) and experienced summer heat and humidity. We told the stories of God’s children, slave and free. There are many who still need to be introduced to the “One True God.” Tell the stories that relate to your own freedom. Invite a friend to join you in the service of our King! We are FREE TO SERVE THE LORD! Spread the GOOD NEWS! Faithfully, Pastor Hoover

Discussed the proposed stewardship letter asking members to indicate their financial level of giving for 2011 to help the Finance team in its budget preparation.

Approved unanimously the installation of a new vinyl fence for Nursery School playground. (Donations will cover about 75% of the costs.)

Approved unanimously the purchase of paint for a project in the Nursery School, at a cost not to exceed $500.

Heard about a proposed Welcome Back Breakfast, performed by the Men of Zion on Sunday, September 5th (Labor Day weekend).

Approved unanimously Brooke Dohner for membership through the sacrament of Baptism.

Accepted with regret and understanding the letter of resignation from Jeff Thompson as ministry team leader for Evangelism.

Heard the suggestion by Pastor Hoover to use $3000 of the Endowment proceeds for the Imagine Campaign of the Lutheran Camping Corporation, to be used toward the acquisition of land adjacent to Camp Nawakwa. Your council meets regularly the third Monday of each month at 7:00PM. Any member of Zion is invited to attend regular meetings of the council.

During the month of July, 15 new families completed forms to receive food at the pantry. The pantry served a total of 551 people during the month, or 169 family units. These numbers included 204 children, 277 adults, and 70 seniors. At the beginning of each new state fiscal year, client families must complete a new registration form. Thank you to Jennifer Pipkin and Diane Ramer who assisted with the re-registration of client families during the month of July.

Each month as more new families in the Hempfield community are added to the client list, each month also brings new volunteers and new donations to the pantry. There are many ways you can volunteer in the pantry. If you are interested in serving as a volunteer, see or call Diane Gerlach (898-7266). The pantry has “brought” many people from area churches, businesses, community groups, and individuals who volunteer together as one to “feed the hungry” in the Hempfield and surrounding area.

Thanks to some of our local farmers and individuals who donate fresh produce from their gardens to the pantry on a weekly basis. The pantry is blessed to have Zion’s outreach ministry to the Hempfield community through the use of physical space for the pantry as a witness of Christ’s presence in our midst. THANK YOU ZION MEMBERS for your continued support to the pantry through your donations of food, money, and time. Your actions have been a blessing to many people. Remember, if you have not taken a tour of the pantry, you are welcome to do so any time. See Jim Bear or Diane Gerlach on a Sunday, or visit the pantry during “open” hours Monday or Wednesday 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM.

ANCIENT EGYPT WAS A HUGE SUCCESS!

It was a faith-building, One True God Celebration Week, with 70 kiddos, over 45 adult and teenage volunteers, and 12-plus hours of learning the story of Joseph and God's Love! It was also a week full of singing, dancing, building bricks, eating lots of tasty foods, weaving baskets, learning hieroglyphics, learning the tricks of embalming, making blankets and Egyptian masks, creating jeweled cuffs and headbands, and everyone's favorite...looking the part in Egyptian eye makeup!!

A HUGE thank you to all that made our VBS such a success! Our volunteers were amazing and a very special thank you to Cathy Benedict, who helped to make things happen before we even got to Egypt, JOSEPH (Kyle Symonds) and his GUARD (Kyle Brady), MUSIC LEADERS (Kaylyn Ringso and Renee Censier), GAMES TEAM (Ron Chapman, Craig Kimbark, and Shane Symonds), SHOPKEEPERS (Judy, Pat, Meghan and Duncan Brady, Janet and Bob Bair, Mary and Jason Green, Cheryl Russell, Todd Reed, Chad Sweitzer, Diane Ramer, Christopher Chapman, Judy and Bob Traup, Sue Censier, Joanna Youseff, Barb Wildasin, Lisa Nelson, and Rachel Scamardella), FAMILY LEADERS (Christine and Aaron Croop, Abby Barley, Krissy Kimbark, Dottie Wauls, Denise Haun, Mary Rose Sweitzer, Ellen and Bill McCaffrey, Joanne Grim, Ellie Barley, Linda Bear, Julia Grove, Jonathan Wise, Pat Landis, and Palma and Ken Reed), DRAMA TEAM (Pat Brady, Jeff Scamardella, Kim Paternoster, Dylan Gromen, Katie Hetrick, and Steve Haun), our SOUND MAN (Bob Hollinger), and the REGISTRATION crew (Angie Maurer and Millie Gundel). Thank you also to Deb, Rachael, and Amanda Grube, Aimee Censier, Diane and Bruce Gerlach, Kayla Gromen, Amanda Grube, and Chase Pipkin for filling in for us and to Dave Dumeyer, Bob Traup, Chad Sweitzer, Corey Paternoster, and Kaylyn Ringso for helping to set up for the week. Thank you also to all who gave donations and loans of tents for the week! We look forward to seeing you next year!!!

CHRISTIAN CHILDREN’S FUND IS NOW CHILD FUND Christian Children’s Fund recently changed its name to Child Fund. The child that Zion sponsors, Brenda Alimo, is celebrating her seventh birthday on September 30th. She lives in Uganda with her family and is doing very well, thanks to our sponsorship. The letters written on her behalf by her mother, father, and aunts are posted along with photos at the end of the hall next to the ZYM bulletin board. She now attends school and will soon be able to write the letters herself. Birthday money will be given to her from the fund and a birthday card was sent from Zion. Please pray for her health and safety. Her family has expressed their faith in God and is teaching Brenda to have faith also. Millie Gundel Correspondent for Zion Note from Dave Albin: If you haven’t yet found a home as part of one of Zion’s Sunday School groups, please join us in the room opposite the church parlor for our Signature NIV Bible Class. We’ll continue to read and discuss the Word of God every session, and personalize fresh and new covenants with God every week. The sign on our door may be different, but we still feel the same: “Everyone here is a teacher, and everyone here is a student. But most important, everyone is welcome.”

The Nursery School 3-day class still has a few openings for the upcoming fall session. It will meet Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 9:00 to 11:30. Children must be 4 years of age by September 1 to be eligible for the class. If you are interested in a small class, a Christian environment, a loving staff, and individualized instruction for your child, our school may be the one for you. Please call 898-1392 for more information.

YOUR HELP IS NEEDED – WILL YOU GIVE ONE SUNDAY? Life brings many changes. Sometimes our living situations have to change due to circumstances. Sometimes we do not have the freedom we used to because we no longer have a car or are unable to drive a car due to circumstances. As life brings changes to us, especially as we age – we lose that sense of belonging and doing those routine things we looked forward to on a regular basis. Would you consider taking one Sunday in the upcoming months to drive to Willow Street early Sunday morning and bring one of our long-time members to the 8:00 service? “But that is so early! I’d have to leave home by 7:00 to get him here!” Yes, that is all true. But what if you only had to do it once? This is a wonderful opportunity for you to step out of your comfort zone and do something that God would have you do for your Zion family. 10:30 service-goers – this would give you the opportunity to get to see those people who are members of Zion who you miss seeing weekly. What a great way to reconnect! Another plus for that Sunday is that you will be back home by 10:00 AM and ready to enjoy an extended day doing what you like. Just think, if 52 drivers volunteered, this member would be able to come to church every Sunday for the next year and you would have only changed your schedule once. You would truly be a blessing to one of our long-time members. A sign-up sheet is in the Narthex. Dear Zion Congregation Members, Is cooking/meal preparation one of your gifts? We are looking to update our list of people willing to prepare meals for parishioners who are ill, have a new baby in the house, or other situations. (W)holy, (W)holy, (W)holy Health, Healing and Wholeness Article

September 2010

“After this the son of the woman, the mistress of the house, became ill; his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him.” (1 Kings 17:17, NRSV)

If you have ever heard an infant suffering from whooping cough (pertussis), it can be an

extremely frightening experience! Inflammation from this bacterial infection leads to a cough so sever that the child cannot catch his breath. Between coughs, he gasps for air, leading to the distinctive “whooping” sound of the illness. Whooping cough is not just a childhood disease, and the number of active cases here in the US are climbing – in California alone, the number of cases has quadrupled over that of last year - enough for it to be labeled an ‘epidemic”. Cases have also increased in Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Oregon and South Carolina, and it is believe the numbers will further increase when children return to school. Why the sharp increase? It is not due to parents failing or refusing to immunize their children, nor is it due to an increase in immigration, as one might suspect. Instead, because immunity to the disease decreases over time, adolescents and adults are increasingly vulnerable to the bacteria as they age. They may even be unknowing carriers of the disease. In addition, re-emergence of the disease appears to be cyclical, occurring every 3 to 5 years. That is why the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommend that children, adolescents, and adults receive regular immunization. This is especially important if they live with, or are caregivers of, infants under the age of three months. Children should receive immunization against pertussis at 2 months, 4 months, and 6 months-of-age, with booster shots administered between 15-18 months, and again at ages 4-5 years. Different formulations are used in children over the age of 7, adolescents, and adults, and should be determined by the prescribing physician. Adults should be re-vaccinated every 10 years. Like many other respiratory infections, pertussis is spread by droplet via unprotected coughs. The time required for the bacteria to grow can vary from 6 – 21 days after exposure. Initial symptoms mimic those of an ordinary cold, with runny nose, congestion, sneezing, low-grade fever, and a cough. However, instead of the cough subsiding in a week or two, the pertussis cough typically intensifies. The most vulnerable is the unimmunized infant, in which a classic case of whooping cough can rapidly worsen. Uninterrupted coughing leads to the gasping for air; blueness of the fingers, toes and skin around the mouth; drooling; and vomiting. Eating and drinking become increasingly difficult, rapidly leading to exhaustion, dehydration, and in the most severe cases, seizures, pneumonia, even death. Currently, there is no treatment for the cough, which can linger for months, and can return with subsequent respiratory infections – earning it the name the “100-day cough.” A cool mist vaporizer may provide some relief. However, the best protection against pertussis remains immunization. In the coming months, the CDC hopes to raise public awareness of the disease, particularly in physicians and other health care providers, who may unwittingly be passing on the disease to the very patients they are trying to protect. If you are not sure when you last received an immunization against whooping cough, please speak to your primary care provider. If you have an infant, try to limit your child’s exposure to adults and adolescents who may not have been immunized. And finally, as with any respiratory infection, practice good cough and cold etiquette; remember to cover your cough, and practice good hand washing techniques!

Faith: The Final Frontier. These are the purposes of Zion’s Youth Ministry. Its continuing mission to serve

those in need, to seek out new life, and to introduce them to Christ. To love God and explore His purpose for our lives. To boldly go on the journey together.

ZYM Kick-Off! ZYM Kick-Off is Sunday, August 29th, following the second service. Families of students entering grades 6-12 are invited to join us at Cooper House for great food, games, and fellowship. Please sign up on the ZYM bulletin board or email [email protected]. We'll provide the burgers, dogs, and drinks, plates, etc. We ask that families sign up for a salad, side dish, or dessert. Bring your lawn chairs and your “fun-in-the-sun” clothes for some games after the meal. Invite your friends, too!

Help Wanted The ZYM team is looking for a person to serve as Fund Raising Coordinator. Fund raising for youth

ministry is a vital piece that helps lower the cost to families for certain events such as mission trips, National Gatherings, and retreats. It makes these components of the whole ministry affordable to more of our students, especially in these economic times. The coordinator will not need to run every fund raising opportunity but instead will help identify profitable fundraisers and seek out members of the congregation to run a particular event based on their gifts and passions. Fundraisers in the past have included dinners, gift cards, flowers, cookies, basket bingo, and youth auctions. If you're interested in serving in this highly rewarding position, please see Viv Gunzenhauser or Bob Hollinger.

“ProclaimingthekingdomofGodandteachingabouttheLordJesusChristwithallboldnessandwithouthindrance.” Acts:28:31

rue Biblical worship is a life-changing encounter with God, that moves us to give all that we are back to our Creator. If we are not careful, our worship can slip easily into meaningless rote, driven more by habit than true spiritual transformation. Spiritual impotence can set in, and we leave church on

Sunday morning feeling unchanged; a major disappointment for those who give so much and plan so hard. Talking about God is not enough. We must experience God. “Our message of the gospel came to you not in word only, but also in power and in the Holy Spirit and with full conviction.” (Thessalonians 1:5) The “power” and the “Holy Spirit” refers to the many talents through which we worship: Music, dance, drama, poetry, reading, arts and technical knowledge. The talent pool in our church is much larger than we think it is. Our adult choir, known simply as the “Choir”, should have a membership of about 20 voices. We currently have eight, and that is not acceptable for a church of our size. Surely, the Holy Spirit will lead us to increase the size of this choir and create the space in our schedules to allow us one hour a week to meet and rehearse. This hour will be Thursday evenings, from 7:30-8:30, beginning September 2nd. This choir will alternate between the 8:00 and 10:30 A.M. services, singing at least once at each service during the month. Our Junior Choir used to rehearse on Tuesday after school from 4:15-5:00 P.M. Over the recent four-year period, the membership in this choir decreased from about 23 children to five in 2008. As the children outgrew the choir, new children did not move in to replace them. This past year I reasoned that if they didn’t come to me on Tuesdays, I would come to them on Sundays. This was not the solution I had hoped for. I missed working for 45 minutes with a dedicated group of children, where we had time to learn our songs well, get involved in musical skits, puppet shows, and more. This coming year, I will go back to a weekly 45 minute rehearsal on Tuesday, from 4:15-5:0 P.M., beginning September 7th. Lambs of God choir will continue to rehearse in the choir room on Sundays, beginning September 11th. We need new voices in this group., particularly MALES!!! Junior Praise Band will rehearse in the sanctuary on Sundays from 5:00-5:45 P.M. Senior Praise Band is in need of bass and guitar players. Remember the great praise band we had recently? Well, those members left for college and other careers and responsibilities, and no one has stepped up to take their place. Of course, the Junior Praise Band will soon be stepping into some of these positions, but we always need your talents in this group. This group will rehease at 11:00 A.M. on Saturdays, beginning August 28th. We always have room for you in all our musical groups. No matter how much or how little experience you have, let the Holy Spirit speak and step up and see me! I am always here, capable, and willing to work with you. In Christ, Dennis Dezort

Dutch Apple presents "Church Basement Ladies" A Women of Zion event not to be missed!

More details coming soon! “Church Basement Ladies” (the original musical): Church Basement Ladies, a musical written by Jim Stowell and Jessica Zuehlke with music and lyrics by Drew Jansen, has been playing to sellout crowds for 29 months in Minneapolis.

The church basement kitchen throughout much of America is often the heart and soul of any church. In "Church Basement Ladies," we meet the pastor, three main kitchen cooks, and one daughter who run the kitchen and care for the congregation by preparing and serving the food. Like any great kitchen, problems are solved here as well. We see the four women handle a Lutefisk Dinner, a funeral, an Easter Fund Raiser, and, of course, a wedding. They stave off potential disasters, have fun, share and debate recipes, instruct the young, and keep the pastor on due course.

This musical comedy based on recipes, food, and change in the church is funny, heart-warming, and down-to-earth. It will bring back memories of many people you know from churches everywhere.

COLUMBARIUM/MEMORIAL GARDEN NEWS EDITION #11 August 2010

Zion’s Columbarium and Memorial Garden was installed December 28, 2006 and dedicated on Sunday, January 14, 2007. It was a year-long project. We are most grateful to our committee and the volunteers who spent some long hours and some back-breaking labor to complete this ministry for our members. We have sold 25 of the 48 niches and have received $7,847 in donations for which we are most grateful. The donations that were given in memory of or in honor of a loved one have been recorded in Zion’s Memorial Book in the Narthex. We have had five inurnment services, and more are planned for the future by families who have kept the cremains of their loved ones. We have borrowed $20,000 from the Endowment Fund which will be repaid when we sell the remaining niches. There are 23 niches remaining to be sold. The total cost per niche is $900; $600 pays for the niche and the engraving, and is refundable if you should decide to change your mind on cremation as a burial option; $300 is a donation and is tax-deductible, but is not refundable. Our costs are very reasonable. I have been told that just grave opening costs alone in Lancaster County have risen to $1,500. You may want to consider our less expensive option. If you own grave plots and are wondering how to dispose of them, you may want to consider donating them to a nearby church and taking a tax deduction.

A Financial Summary of the Columbarium/Memory Garden Account

$22,500 = 25 niches sold @ $900 each $ 5,000 = A transfer from the Memorial Fund $ 2,847 = Donations received $ 602 = CD Interest income $20,000 = Loan from the Endowment Fund, to be repaid $50,949 = Total niche sales, loan and donations received ($39,588) = Costs to date, including original purchase $11,361 = Balance in checking account, and invested in a 4.5% Certificate of Deposit $20,700 = 23 niches to be sold @ $900 each $32,061 = Estimated balance after all 48 niches are sold ($20,000) = Payback to the Endowment Fund $12,061 = Estimated leftover when all niches are sold You may direct your questions to Burnell Hostetter at 898-7132. Thank you, Burnell Hostetter Columbarium/Memory Garden Team Leader
