What is an NSF standard?The NSF International organisation is the largest and longest established organisation in the world for authoritative testing of water filtration systems. Filters compliant with NSF Standard 42 are rated for their performance in reducing offensive tastes and odours, together with reduction of other contaminants and turbidity. Filters compliant with NSF Standard 53 are rated for their performance in relation to health issues, such as reducing the incidence of micro-organisms, particularly the harmful cysts cryptosporidium and giardia.*

What is a micron rating?One millimetre is (of course) one thousandth of a metre. And one micron is one thousandth of a millimetre. Earlier filters had a nominal rating of 5.0 micron, which meant they filtered out contaminants as tiny as 1/200 of a millimetre. Zip GlobalPlus

filters have a micron rating of 3.0, 1.0 and 0.2 micron. Filters with nominal micron ratings of over 1.0 may qualify for NFS Standard 42 but only filters with nominal micron ratings smaller than 1.0 can qualify for NFS Standard 53, for effective filtration of micro-organisms.

* Whilst Standard 42 compliant filters may be certified to comply with the Standard by varying degrees, Standard 53 compliant filters either comply or they do not.
