    Introduction

    General Description

    ZMC stack valves and ZMV proportional valves canbe applied with pumps and various actuators totransfer and control hydraulic power.

    ZMC valves are solenoid-operated stack valves usedto control the direction of hydraulic fluid flow tomotors, cylinders, and other remote actuators.

    ZMC valves use a unique through-tube design totransfer fluid from module to module in the stack. Thesolenoid pilot valves are a reliable three piece design.Solenoids are water resistant with several termina-tions and voltages available.

    The solenoid-operated pilot valves supply pilot flowto the larger directional control spools and poppets.This allows for full pressure to shift these spools whenthe pilot valve is energized.

    ZMV valves are solenoid-operated proportional flowcontrols used to control the amount of flow to ahydraulic actuator.

    The ZMV proportional valves are stand-alone designsthat are controlled by a pulse width modulated (PWM)signal. Electronic controllers are also available tosatisfy system requirements.

    ZMC Module Specifications

    The ZMC series offers flexibility for designing anelectrohydraulic system to meet your exact require-ments. It is comprised of a family of solenoid-oper-ated valve modules, each designed for the optimumcontrol of a particular function. All ZMC modulesshare a common mounting and porting pattern. Thisallows a ZMC valve stack using any combination ofmodules to be assembled for an exact application.With ZMC modules, a single hydraulic power source(i.e. pump) can supply multiple actuating require-ments.

    Normally open and normally closed configurationsare available for most valves. Field convertible con-figurations are available for the unload valves. If theZMC stack is in a normally open mode, a ZMC unloadvalve (ZMC-UVx or ZMC URx) is used as a systeminlet and bypass module.

    This typical ZMC stack consists of several modules to operate a grain harvesting combine's auxiliary functions.Header control and unloading auger operation are examples of auxiliary functions controlled by the valve stackin the schematic below. Any combination of ZMC modules could be included to customize the valve stack for aparticular application.

    ZMC - URO Module:2-Position/2-Way Normally Open Unload Valve with Integral Relief

    Description

    The URO module is a two-position, two-way solenoid-operated poppet valve with an integral cartridge-stylerelief valve. This module allows a stack assembly tooperate in an open center configuration. This re-duces power consumption by unloading flow to tankwhen it is not required by the actuator. It includes arelief valve for system pressure protection.

    The URO module is normally open. It is designed forlow pressure drop at high flows.

    Operation

    The module will dump flow to tank when the solenoidis de-energized. When the valve is energized the pilotwill block flow and build pressure in the spring cham-ber of the main poppet, forcing it closed. Then flowcan be ported onward to another valve and themechanical application.

    The pilot-operated relief valve is a full flow valve thatwill open at any time pressure is higher than the valvesetting. The valve pressure setting is based on a38 l/min (10 gpm) flow rate. It is set with an adjustablescrew and available with a tamper-proof cap.

    ZMC - PRV Module:Pressure Reducing Valve

    Description

    The PRV module contains a cartridge-style, pilot-operated pressure-reducing and -relieving valve. Thisvalve provides a reduced pressure in all modules inthe stack downstream of the PRV. This pressure ismaintained regardless of flow.

    Operation

    The valve is normally open to flow downstream.When the pressure setting of the valve is reached thevalve will close to stop flow while maintaining thereduced pressure downstream. If downstream pres-sure rises above this setting, the valve will open andrelieve that pressure to tank.

    ZMC - PFD Module:Priority Flow Dividing Valve

    Description

    The PFD module is used to split flow into two parts(e.g. for two sections of stack). The priority flow isconstant and sent through the priority pressure gal-lery. This flow is pressure compensated to maintainconstant priority flow regardless of load pressure.Excess flow is ported through the secondary pres-sure gallery for use in another set of valves or it canbe sent through an optional external port.

    Operation

    Inlet flow passes through the orifice at the end of thespool and passes through the spool center and out tothe priority pressure gallery. The pressure drop acrossthis orifice causes the spool to shift right against thespring. The spool then meters excess flow to thesecondary port.

    ZMC - DPV Module:3-Position/3-Way Demand Priority Valve

    Description

    The DPV module is a priority flow control valve. It isused to supply priority flow to a steering valve. Ex-cess flow is bypassed to the module pressure gallery.This module also contains a dynamic load sense portwhich can be connected to a steering motor loadsense port. This allows the motor to demand flowfrom the valve when it is required.

    Operation

    When no flow is required by the steering motor, theload sense line is connected to the tank through themotor and the priority flow is blocked. Priority portpressure causes the spool to shift, diverting flow tothe valve module's pressure gallery. When steeringflow is required, a variable orifice in the externalsteering motor's load sense line narrows sending apressure signal to the spring end of the spool. Thiscauses the spool to shift diverting a portion of the flowto the priority port. The amount of priority port flow iscontrolled by the load sense line pressure. Priorityport pressure is limited by an externally adjustablerelief cartridge connected to the load sense line.

    Description

    The SOV module is a normally closed two-position,two-way solenoid-operated poppet valve. It iscommonly used to control flow to a motor or otherunidirectional actuators.

    It is designed for low pressure drop and minimalleakage.

    Operation

    The valve is spring-biased closed. Energizing thesolenoid will allow the pilot valve to open which drainsthe poppet spring chamber. Inlet flow overcomes thespring and opens the poppet. Flow is then channeledthrough the work port.

    The PPV module is a three-position, three-way poppetvalve. It is commonly used as directional control forsingle-acting cylinders.

    This module also contains built in pressure protectionfor the work port, poppet type checks on the outlet,and two manually adjustable flow controls for theraise and lower functions.

    The PPV module is designed with poppets to offerminimal leakage (2 drops/min) and low pressuredrop.

    Operation

    The poppets are spring-biased closed. Energizingeither solenoid will open the pilot valve which will ventthe main poppet spring chamber. Pressure will over-come the spring and shift the poppet open. Energiz-ing the Raise poppet will pressurize the work port.Energizing the Lower poppet will depressurize thework port.

    ZMV Module Specifications

    Description

    ZMV modules are electronic proportional valveassemblies used to control flow to a motor or othertype of actuator. They include pressure compensa-tion to accurately control flow regardless of loadpressure. A manually adjustable override is availableto bypass the proportional electrical valve. ZMV mod-ules are stand alone units and are not stackable.

    ZMV modules are available in open center (21O and21P) and closed center (21C and 21L) valve configu-rations. The open center module can include a PowerBeyond port to channel excess flow to another func-tion (21P). The closed center module can come withload sensing capability (21L).

    Typical applications include variable motor speedcircuits on combines, salt spreader applications ontrucks, and hydraulic motor conveyers.

    Operation

    The module's pilot valve is spring-biased normallyclosed. When a pulse width modulated (PWM) signalof 35 to 100 Hz is applied to the solenoid, the valve willopen proportionally to the current. The compensatingspool maintains a constant pressure drop across thepilot valve (or manual valve) and therefore pressurecompensates the priority flow.

    A potentiometer and electronic driver on page 35 ora joystick control on page 36 may be used to supplythe valve input signal.

    ZMC and ZMV valves utilize the same solenoiddesign. This two piece design consists of an encap-sulated coil and a metal enclosure.

    110VAC solenoids are internally rectified. They arerated for reverse voltage spikes of 400 volts maxi-mum.

    Standard solenoids are not hermetically sealed. Con-sult Sauer-Sundstrand Application Engineering re-garding applications requiring waterproof solenoids.

    Several terminations, voltages, and diodes are avail-able. Intermittent solenoids are used to improveresponse time. Consult duty cycle ratings when usingintermittent duty solenoids.

    SCA-35: Single Channel Amplifier

    Description

    The SCA-35 single channel amplifier is designed tooptimize the performance of ZMV series pressure-compensated flow control valves in handling flowsfrom 4 to 38 l/min (1 to 10 gpm).

    The SCA-35's current feedback provides low hyster-esis by compensating for fluctuations in input voltageand solenoid resistance. Output overload and arcsuppression diode protection is included in the SCA-35. However, arc suppression is also recommendedfor the valve's coil.

    The SCA-35 is fully encapsulated for protection againsthumidity, vibration, and shock.

    Operation

    The control signal to the driver is generated by apotentiometer or an analog signal. The amplifierprovides no output until the control input is greaterthan 1% of the internal reference voltage (+5 VDC).

    A 2 Ω, 2.25 watt resistor with 292° of travel is available

    Electronic Control Handle: MCH41CL2287

    Description

    This panel mount control handle is designed to oper-ate the ZMV series flow control valves. It is enclosedin a plastic case and includes a non-locking knob andfriction-held control.

    Combined with any ZMV valve, this driver will providea complete pressure compensated flow control sys-tem to handle 4 to 38 l/min (1 to 10 gpm).

    Required Assembly Hardware

    Through Tubes / Plug Tubes

    All ZMC modules utilize common pressure and tankgalleries running through the length of the valvestack. Each through tube includes two sets of O-ringsand back up rings for elimination of leakage betweenthe modules.

    Three tie bolts are used in each ZMC valve stack tojoin the modules together. The through tubes assistin aligning the modules into the stack. This eliminatesthe spool binding that occurs due to over torquing thetie bolts or mounting to uneven surfaces.

    Plug tubes are used to seal the pressure and tankgalleries at the end of the valve stack. To add mod-ules to an assembled valve stack the plug tubes canbe removed and replaced by a through tube toaccommodate additional modules.

    Plug tubes can also be used to isolate a particularmodule's pressure and/or tank gallery from the rest ofthe stack.

    Stacking Configurations

    Valve assemblies can be mounted in any direction,but for clarity a valve stack with “L” brackets isreferred to as “Horizontal” and a stack without “L”brackets as “Vertical” (see figures).

    "L" feet mounting brackets and end plates are pro-vided to support the complete stack. The brackets arestamped from steel and zinc plated. Tie bolts areused to fasten the stack together. Pressure and tankconnections are made either through the appropriate

    end caps or through the Unload modules (UVx, URx).Plug tubes are inserted in the end modules to seal thepressure and tank galleries.

    An alternative mounting style is to use the tie bolts tofasten the valve stack to a customer-supplied metalplate.

    All ZMC modules can also be utilized as stand aloneline mount valves.

    Stacking Kits

    Currently six stacking kit configurations are offered.These are listed in tables on the following pages.

    The tapped end plates are attached to the stack viathe through-bolt.

    A stacking kit part number is determined as follows:

    1. Decide if a Horizontal or Vertical configuration(described above) is required.

    2. Determine if an end cap with ports is required. If nounload module (UVx, URx) is used, an end capwith ports must be used. This allows the pressureand tank lines to be connected to the valve stack.

    3. Go to the table that corresponds to the configura-tion required. Under the column indicating thecorrect number of modules choose the corre-sponding part number for either a factory-as-sembled stack or an unassembled stack kit.

    Factory assembled stacks will be completely as-sembled and pressure-tested as a stack. A single"stack" part number will be generated for reordering.

    When ordering please supply either the stack partnumber or all module order codes (page 6) andcorresponding stacking kit part numbers.
