Meet Sahia, Azumi, Ashiza, Rabi, Dijé, Rahamaou, and Halima -- Nigerian women who have opened their own small businesses through CARE’s savings and loan pro- gram Mata Masu Dubara or status. In a country where women have an 8% rate of literacy, live only to their for- ties, have minimal access to credit and limited decision- making powers within their communities and families, these women are extraordinary examples of how women can help women change their lives for the better. Greetings Fellow Zontians,

I first want to take a mo-ment to thank all of you fora very smooth running andenjoyable February meet-ing. When we award ourannual Service Grants, itreflects so positively on theefforts that all of you haveput forth through the year.February 10 was a visualand verbal confirmation ofall of your good work.I hope you are all ready forspring, as it appears to be“busting out” all over. The early flowers are up and Ihave seen crocuses alreadyblooming around the Met-ropolitan area. I imagineyou are looking throughthe gardening catalogs pre-paring ready to plant for

longer and warmer days. Liferesembles our gardens; weplant seeds, fertilize and wa-ter, hoping for a crop ofbeautiful flowers and tastyfruits and vegetables. AsZontians we also plant theseeds of hope and opportu-nity through our planningefforts, financial contribu-tions and hands-on serviceactivities. I’m hoping for “bumper” results from our cumulative efforts throughthis year.

As you know, nothing everhappens without thoroughplanning, so if you have notalready taken the time, pleaseregister on the Zonta Inter-national web site and com-plete the on-line MemberSurvey. The deadline hasbeen extended to Friday,March 4, 2005. Closer tohome, we have several inter-esting items to discuss andvote on at our upcomingmeeting on March 10th. Sev-eral fundraising activities arebeing planned and will bepresented at the meeting.

Additionally, another spe-cial opportunity for theDenver Kids Teen MomProgram is being set inmotion and your ideas andapproval are needed. Wehope to see you there soyou can be involved inthese local planning ef-forts.

In closing, don’t forget that March 8th is ZontaRose Day and the UnitedNation’s “Day of the Woman”. Excelsior has asked for help inseveral areas.So far we have offers to work inthe clothing store,sharing experiences (for thoseover 55), tutoring, andsharing cultural experiences.We will also be collectinghouse wares on a continuingbasis for their emancipatingteens. Membership has inducted 5new members so far this year -thanks to all of you for yourdiligent efforts to bring in greatwomen who are interested inservice.

Sandra Stemmler has volun-teered to assist Cynthia Hern-don and the rest of the com-mittee in finalizing the NewMember Handbook, which wehope to have completed byMay.

In addition, we negotiated anew contract with the Sheratonthrough the end of the year, atonly a $2 increase for our din-ners.

In honor of Zonta Interna-tional's 85th Anniversary, wewill highlight 85 Zontians whohave made vital contributionsto Zonta, their communitiesand the world. Please read TheZontian magazine and visitthis page frequently to learnabout these memorable andinfluential women.

Mary Jenkins was the firstpresident of the Confed-eration of Zonta Clubsfrom 1919-1921. A pioneerin the field of journalism,she became owner andpresident of the SyracuseHerald in 1903. Dedicatedto civic service, she was a

founder of Camp Hillcrest, a home forundernourished, crippled and convalescentchildren, and the trustee of the HuntingtonFoundation, a club for working girls and

women. In 1945, Jenkins received an hon-orary degree from Syracuse Universityfrom Chancellor William Tolley, who saidof Mary, “Your sincerity of purpose, ide-als, and service have made you an inspira-tion to all who know you.”

Today, the Zonta International Founda-tion legacy program is named for Mary theMary E. Jenkins 1919 Society now num-bers 39 women and men who have noti-fied the Foundation of their intention toprovide for Zonta programs through theirestate.

The Zonta Club of Doug-las County will be hostingtheir 2nd Annual TriviaBowl on Saturday, April2nd, at the DouglasCounty Fairgrounds inCastle Rock.

This is their yearly fund-raiser, and tickets are $25per person with dinnerprovided by the OutbackSteakhouse. Spouses and

friends are welcome tojoin Zontians for thisevent. Many of our clubmembers attended lastyear and it was a lot offun! Tables are com-prised of six players each,and there are ten roundsof trivia questions onvarious subjects. Prizesare given for each round,and there is a $600 cashgrand prize.

Our club has reservedtwo tables this year, sothere is still plenty ofroom left for more peo-ple. Signed up so far areJudy Allen and RichardStarlin, Steve & SheilaDavis, Mandy Ziegler,and Sheila Becker.

Several current and for-mer members of our clubwill be honored for theirextended service with theZonta Club of Denver tocelebrate this year’s Zonta Rose Day and Interna-tional Women’s Day, Tuesday, March 8th. AllZontians worldwide willbe celebrating this dayutilizing the symbol of ayellow rose. The yellowrose denotes friendship,and the objectives of thisday are to increase thevisibility of Zonta andZonta International, andto promote support forlocal and internationalservice projects and issuesaffecting women.

Zonta Club of Denver General Meeting Minutes February 10thMeeting was called to order at 6:09 p.m.

November minutes were approved as printed in the Smoke Signal.

Jacki Sammons presented the Zonta Moment letting the membershipknow of Zonta International’s task force that she is a part of as well as mentioning that members should participate in the survey which willgive Zonta International a direction for restructuring.

After dinner Linda Corssmit presented the guests who received theservice grants this year. She noted that there were 18 grant applica-tions of organizations who support our mission of advancing thestatus of women. Her committee then made site visits and after delib-eration the following organizations were chosen to receive grants andwill speak briefly tonight before receiving their checks.

Excelsior Zonta is sponsoring after care program for emanci-pated girls. 32 year old organization.

Hope Communities Project Strive, teenagers tutoring youngelementary students in 5 points area.

RAAP 24 year old organization, we are sponsoring personalsafety skills classes and preventative education.

Women’s Bean Project15 year old, we will help with mentoringprogram

Work Options for Women Culinary job training, 7 year old or-ganization.

Treasurer’s Report: Judy Allen stated that financial state-ments are available for June through September.

Membership: Linda McBurney stated that we have a new con-tract with the hotel. The cost of the dinners will rise to $25.We will have a monetary penalty if we are over or under by 2or 3 confirmed attendees.

Fund Raising: Linda Rhea wanted to thank all members, wehad more than 90% membership supporting the ‘Let’s Party event’. Survey’s have been turned in by 11 people. 90% mem-bers loved it, 90% vendors loved it. We will have a discussionin April about location for next event.Nancy Koontz discussed possible other fund-raisers, Bowl-a-thon, Garage Sale, Theatre events. We will have additionalideas at the March meeting.

Service: Sheila Davis passed the clipboard signups. GatheringPlace will take leftover food from catered events. Our partici-pation in International Towne is Feb 16th

Status of Women: International Women’s Day and Zonta Rose Day is March 8th. We will be honoring past club mem-bers, some current members, financial advisors and others withrose bud vase on the 8th. Our Goal is to promote Zonta Clubsand Women’s service to the community.

New Business: noneAnnouncements: We are selling ‘Chocolate & cookies’ as well as silent auc-

tion baskets in the foyer. Amelia Earhart night had 8-10 members from our club

attending with approximately 77 people in attendance. Summit of Americas will be held June 24-26. Invitations

will be going out. District 3 is planning the program andDistrict 12 is hosting the venue. Possible tour on Fridayin Downtown Denver, Reception Friday night, brunchSunday. This is being held in the off year to Convention.The purpose is to share ideas in core service projects.

Area 3 meeting will be held on April 9th at the Spice ofLife Center in Boulder.

RAAP is sponsoring a fund-raising event at “Vagina Monologues” in February.

Legislative Women’s Breakfast is being held tomorrow Feb 11th at the Colorado History Museum between 7-9.
