Heat or Fire


When working with heat or fire, you will need to wear safety goggles.

To move hot objects you will need to use the right tongs. Different types of containers use different sets of tongs.


1. Use a hot plate or burner to heat things. Pay close attention to instructions. Never leave a burner unattended.

2. If you have long hair, pull it away from your face or put in a ponytail. Never reach across an open flame


3. Use tongs or heavy gloves to

handle hot items.

4. Do not put your face or hands over any boiling liquid.

5. When heating chemicals or other materials, be sure the containers are made of heat-proof glass and are open NOT closed. Put a wire screen between the container and the flame


6. Never point container at anyone while it is being heated.

7. Keep all extra materials away from heat sources.

8. Handle hot liquids with care. Put the back of your hand next to the container to determine how hot it is.


9. Turn off the heat source as soon as you are finished with it.

Do not move the hot plate or burner.

Hot and cold glassware look exactly the same.


Fire Safety Equipment• Fire Blanket:• A fire blanket is used to

wrap a student if any part of the student’s clothing catches on fire. The fire blanket is stored in a marked container on the wall.

Electrical Hazard


1. Do not leave electrical cords where someone could trip over them.

2. Keep cords away from a heat source and water.

3. Never touch electrical equipment or cords with wet hands.


4. Turn off all equipment when finished with an investigation.

5. Grasp the plug to disconnect equipment. Do not pull on the cord.

1. When cutting, place the object on a flat surface. Do not hold it in your hand.

2. Always handle sharp instruments carefully. They can cause severe cuts if used incorrectly.


3. Do not walk fast or run with sharp objects in your hands.

4. Always cut away from your body and others.


Working with

ChemicalsChemicals


When working with chemicals, you will need to wear safety goggles. Regular eyeglasses do not give adequate protection.

Many chemicals require the use of gloves. Check your MSDS sheet or lab write-up for the right equipment.


Many chemicals can stain or dissolve fabrics. Aprons should be worn to protect your clothing.

Check your lab write-up or MSDS sheet to determine if tongs are needed to handle containers of chemicals.


1. Keep your hands away from your face, eyes, and body while using solutions.

2. Don’t taste chemicals.

3. Dispose of chemicals according

to teacher’s instructions. To avoid contamination, NEVER return chemicals to their

original containers


4. Inform your teacher if you get chemicals on your skin. And immediately wash with water.

If chemicals get in your eyes, flush immediately with water and have someone tell the teacher.

Notify the teacher of any spills.

5. Pour chemicals over the sink or over a designated container.


6. When acids are combined with water they can splash and get on your hands, your face, or in your eyes.

If you need to combine an acid or a base with water, remember:

Always add acids and bases to water NOT the other way around.


Chemical Safety Lab Equipment

Eye/Face Wash:If any hazardous material should be splashed on the face or eye area the eye wash station should be used to “flush” the affected area. Proper use of the eyewash station will be demonstrated by the teacher.
