ON OUR COVER:Jerry F., a VALLEYLIFE member since 2000, is a part of our Vocational Services Program. Jerry holds a custodial position at VALLEYLIFE and loves to come to work every day. Jerry was featured in an Arizona Republic article by Laurie Roberts in July, 2010 when he lost his state funding and was overwhelmed by the outpouring of support by our community. Jerry’s funding has now been restored by the state. Our supporters really do make a difference!

Leadership Team

Our Story

In 1947 Mrs. Bernice Kussell realized that children with disabilities in the Arizona State Hospital where she worked were not having their needs met. Hospital staff was unable to take the time to provide personal contact and attention to these children who were left to sit alone day after day. After watching children desperately reach out to staff for just the smallest affection, Bernice decided to take action.

Bernice opened her own home to the disabled children of her community and began providing the care that was lacking in state facilities. She quickly found these children were capable of much more than was expected of them and began to develop a program that gave the children opportunities to learn and be engaged in the world around them. She poured over the latest research and invested all of her resources into building a program that promoted the pursuit of independence and community involvement for the children she served and loved.

After growing beyond the capacity of her own home in 1951, she founded Valley of the Sun School and Habilitation Center. This center was one of the first of its kind in Arizona, and as the children grew older, services were expanded to support adults and community members with disabilities as well.

In order to serve more individuals, the school moved from its location on McDowell Road and 33rd Avenue to a larger campus at 1142 West Hatcher Road, Phoenix in 1989. After refocusing the agency’s efforts to provide additional services to the community in 2009, the center was re-branded as VALLEYLIFE. Today, VALLEYLIFE remains a private, not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) corporation, governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. A staff of more than 400 well trained individuals delivers the highest quality of services to approximately 450 Members annually. Our Members experience a wide spectrum of disabilities including mild to profound cognitive, mobility, hearing, and/or vision disabilities, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Alzheimer’s, autism, serious mental illness and traumatic brain injury.

During an interview, Bernice’s daughter Bertie Krell, was quoted as saying, “My mother would be so pleased to see what has become of the center that meant so much to her.” We are honored to be the torchbearers of Bernice’s legacy and are dedicated to continuing to provide the care and compassion for our Members that Bernice provided for so many years. With the continued support of our friends, partners and donors, there is no limit to what we can achieve.

Dear Friends of VALLEYLIFE,

VALLEYLIFE is committed to providing high quality programs and services to disabled individuals and their families who require a family living environment, vocational training, day program services or in-home care. When there is a shortfall in outside support, we, with the help of our friends, fill the gap. Parents and other family members throughout our community depend on VALLEYLIFE to provide loving and consistent care to their children and adult family members with special needs, and Members who are no longer able to rely upon the support of their natural family, need us to be their forever family.

With this said, we are pleased to be able to share another successful year at VALLEYLIFE with you. We have been fortunate in these difficult economic times, and have continued to excel at providing safe and effective programs to our constituents. Our hard work has resulted in many successes including:

• The Erika Y. Schafer Art Gallery, dedicated in November of 2010, revitalized our art pro-gram, bringing us new projects, teachers, volunteers, and friends, We could not be happier with these changes which have resulted in more enriching life experiences for our Members.

• The generosity of our friends at the Arizona Cardinals, the Arizona Diamondbacks, U.S. Airways, and Valley of the Sun United Way allowed our Members to attend many sporting and cultural events this year. These outings provided opportunities for our Members to more frequently engage with the community around them.

• Thunderbirds Charities provided us with much needed funding to begin the renovation of our Vocational Training Center. When completed, this project will allow us to provide vocational services to twice as many Members as currently served.

This year also hailed the launch of the Bernice Kussell Donor Society. With a goal of 100 new members in the first five years, we are happy to report that only three-quarters of the way into the first year, we had 25 new members! Funds raised by this Society are already being used to provide medical, dental, and emergency services not covered by other funding sources or insurance.

Our goal at VALLEYLIFE is to provide safe, reliable, caring and nurturing environments for those in need. Your support is critical to our agency. Without the generosity of our friends, donors and community partners, we might not be able to meet the needs of our Members, nor could we continue to grow and provide assistance to the community members still out there who need our help. We thank you for choosing to support our programs, and for helping ensure our Members are living full, happy and independent lives.

ProgramsDays With 11 Day Training for Adults (DTA’s) locations in the greater Phoenix area, VALLEYLIFE is able to provide disabled adults in our community many opportunities to improve independent living, social, and recreational skills, all of which encourage intellectual and social growth as well as increase opportunities for community involvement.

Each DTA is unique and offers a variety of enrichment programs. Primary caregivers find comfort in knowing their loved ones are being cared for and supported by a well trained staff. Members enjoy the variety of programs available including computer training, visual arts, cooking, and volunteering in their community. The customizable curriculum allows Members to engage in athletic activities through Special Olympics which offers bowling, basketball, track and field, softball, cheerleading and bocce ball.

2011-2012 program successes included:

• Developing and implementing an exercise program that allows for participation by all Members regardless of physical limitations.

• Opening the VALLEYLIFE Member Art Walk, a gallery that displays the artwork of our Members year round.

• Relocating one Day Training for Adults location to allow greater accessibility and the opportunity to support more Members.

• Completing a comprehensive staff re-alignment which allows the talent and creativity of supervisory staff to be better utilized and to increase program offerings.

Home & Community Based Services Many disabled members of our community are not able to leave their home to receive services due to serious medical or physical issues. For those individuals, VALLEYLIFE offers the Home and Community Based Services program (HCBS). The goal of this program is to ensure that medically fragile individuals are able to remain in the safety and comfort of their home setting and cared for by their primary caregivers in lieu of being moved to a long-term care facility. The HCBS program offers several services which can be used individually, or in combination with other services, based on the needs of the Member.

• Habilitation: Outcome-based training individually designed to enhance personal skill levels. This training increases the Member’s self-help, socialization, and adaptive skill-sets so they may participate at the highest possible level in their community.

• Attendantcare: Provides assistance in attaining or maintaining safe and sanitary living conditions and personal cleanliness.

• Respitecare: Provides short-term care and supervision to offer respite to the primary caregiver while presenting the opportunity for individuals to safely get out of the home when possible and enjoy community activities like street fairs, festivals, sporting events and artistic performances.

• Companioncare:Provides assistance in completing daily living activities such as meal preparation, errands, shopping and basic household support.

• Housekeepingservices are also available.

2011-2012 program successes included:

• Providing 42,312 service hours to Members and their families.

• Serving 34 community members in their own homes.

• Taking Members on outings that included Disney on Ice, the circus and sporting events which was possible in part due to the generous support of our donors and community partners.

Residential The goal of the Residential program is to provide a safe and healthy home environment for members of our community in need of this service. Our group homes function like a traditional family home. Each location provides a home for 3-6 Members who, along with staff, prepare and enjoy meals, go on outings, and offer support to each other. Activities such as movie night, weekend BBQs, and birthday parties are regular occurrences in the homes. Members decorate their personal living space as they choose, and all participate in the planning of events and activities in the home.

VALLEYLIFE currently operates 25 residential group homes located throughout the Greater Phoenix area. All VALLEYLIFE housing is licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Programs (AZDHS) and is monitored by the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD). Each home is equipped with appropriate vehicles in order to ensure the safe transportation of our Members daily.

2011-2012 program successes included:

• Providing 775,080 service hours.

• Completing renovations on 6 homes which included upgrading restrooms, removing trip hazards and other changes necessary to ensure the homes remain a safe place where Members can keep their independence and maintain the highest quality of life.

• Filling in 5 group home swimming pools, allowing space for other outdoor activities. This change also saves the agency more than $12,000 a year in repairs and pool maintenance fees.

• Attending Disney on Ice, Diamondback and Mercury games and the State Fair. Many of these events were possible due to generous donations from the community.

• Completing 1,291 medical appointments through our Medical Assisted Supervised Healthcare (MASH) Division.

Programs

Vocational The mission of our Vocational Program is to support disabled members of our community in need of gainful employment. We believe that job opportunities should be available for all, regardless of the challenges they may face. For community members with disabilities, there are often many hurdles to face on the road to meaningful work. VALLEYLIFE offers several services to help Members navigate barriers to employment. We provide assessment, ongoing education, daily living skills, supervised community employment, and job development for those in need. Additionally, we offer resume building, interview skills, job search support and supervised employment in our on-site production center. Our program is customizable to the specific needs of each Member. Our Vocational Program partners with many local businesses and organizations to allow for additional employment and training opportunities for Members. In turn, our Members provide quality services to the business or organization. Williams Express, VALLEYLIFE’s printing company in Tempe, also functions as a vocational training center. More than 100 Members have benefitted from training received at this center. Williams Express is a full service professional print and copy center that offers a variety of services. Revenues from Williams Express are used to support VALLEYLIFE programs and services.

2011-2012 program successes included:• Over 150 individuals served each month, and approximately 200 individuals per year.

• 10 individuals placed into community competitive employment.

• The addition of 1 1/2 new positions in the department allowed for regular on-site support for Members placed in community competitive employment.

• New partnerships were created with Eagle Eye Wholesalers and Sky Chefs. This allowed us to provide additional training opportunities for Members in the community.

Volunteers Volunteers are a major component of VALLEYLIFE’s success. Volunteer projects include beautification of residential and daytime program sites, helping out at special events or assisting at our administrative offices. They also spend time with Members reading, providing music and art instruction or baking cookies. With the help of our dedicated volunteers, VALLEYLIFE can continue to provide quality services and programs to our Members.

Financials With an annual operating budget of just over $15.5 million, VALLEYLIFE’s overhead is one of the lowest in the Valley of the Sun at less than 7%. This means that more than 93 cents of every dollar we receive goes directly into quality programs and services for our Members. Our programs are funded by the Arizona Department of Economic Security (AZDES) and the Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD), funding from Magellan Health Services, revenue from our commercial printing company, Williams Express Document and Print Services, donations from United Way Charities, fund raising events and generous contributions from our donors.

LegacyofLove,October8,2011

Held at Black Canyon Conference Center, the theme of Legacy was “A Long Journey: A Self-Portrait of Mental Illness”, and featured keynote speaker, Laura M. Lawless Robertson. The event was emceed by Joanna De’Shay and included a special Lifetime Achievement Award presentation to Mr. Jim Click, long time advocate for the disabled community and Founder/President of Linkages, a Tucson organization that partners with local employers to provide employment opportunities for disabled individuals.

This year’s tournament was held at Troon North Golf Club. Participants enjoyed a raffle and silent auction as well as the always entertaining best golf story contest.

FriendsofVALLEYLIFE,June6,2012

In 2012, VALLEYLIFE presented our volunteers, donors and friends with a thank you breakfast at the Sheraton Crescent Hotel. Guests enjoyed a Paper Clouds Apparel fashion show starring VALLEYLIFE Members and were moved by the personal stories of our Members as told by their families.

All proceeds from events go directly into programs and services for our Members.

VALLEYLIFE hosts several events for our Members and Staff each year on our campus. This year we celebrated in style beginning with Oktoberfest in October. Members and staff were treated to an Oktoberfest meal of grilled brats and hot dogs. The day’s festivities included a costume contest and games and a performance by our VALLEYLIFE Enrichment Program Players.

In December 2011, we were joined by our friends from the White Mountain Apache Tribe, and all Members received gifts and photos from Santa and his crew. The day included a traditional holiday meal.

Spring came to VALLEYLIFE in April 2012 and with it came the annual SpringFest celebration. This event included our annual staff and Member awards presentation, and a great performance from Celtica. There were games, music, and dancing, as well as a delicious BBQ lunch.

The Bernice Kussell Donor Society FoundingMembers

A lthough she could not have predicted the accomplishments that would come from the program she loved and nurtured in her home, Bernice Kussell understood that her endeavors would create an environment of hope for children and adults with disabilities. The degree of excellence and support Mrs. Kussell exhibited can only be achieved with a community of supporters who are just as dedicated to her vision of enhancing the lives of people with disabilities.

Recognizing the importance of collaboration and donor commitment in support of our Members, we have introduced the Bernice Kussell Society. Named in Bernice’s honor and dedicated to her memory, the Society is a small gesture of gratitude to thank special donors for being such a large part of VALLEYLIFE. You help make our work possible.

Membership to the Society is granted to donors who make an ongoing pledge of $1,000 or more annually to VALLEYLIFE. Membership allows for access to special Society events and VIP treatment at our annual golf tournament and gala events.

The Society hosts several fabulous events each year, from casual events such as cooking demonstrations and tequila tastings, to more formal events that include cocktail parties, high-teas and holiday affairs. Additionally, the Bernice Kussell Society hosts events geared toward increasing understanding of the members of the community we serve. These events include film screenings followed by in-depth group discussions with writers/directors and author-led book discussions.

Funds raised through the Bernice Kussell Society are used in part to provide medical and dental services to Members without medical or dental insurance coverage, as well as for emergency services that are not covered by other funding sources.

BerniceKussellSocietyEvents With the launch of the Bernice Kussell Society in 2011 came several new VALLEYLIFE events. Society members enjoyed the Society Holiday Party, held at the home of board chair, Peter Connolly, on Decem-ber 1st, 2011, followed by a cooking demonstration and food tasting at the Sub-Zero/Wolfe Showroom in Scottsdale on April 21st, 2012, and a Tequila Tasting at the home of board member, Cindy Hallman, on May 5th, 2012.

There are many ways to support VALLEYLIFE! You can volunteer your time, attend one of our events, make a donation of goods or services, or make a financial contribution.

Volunteer at VALLEYLIFE

Volunteers are a big part of VALLEYLIFE. Volunteer projects include beautification projects, reading, baking cookies, helping at special events, and working on special office projects. Sharing your time, talents, and resources enables us to further our goals plus our Members and staff really love visitors!

Financial Contributions

Your tax-deductible donation to VALLEYLIFE will help us continue to support our disabled community. With a low 7% overhead, 93 cents of every dollar you donate goes directly into our programs and services. Donations can be made in person, over the phone or online. VALLEYLIFE accepts cash, checks, all major credit cards, and stock and bond gifts. Additionally, VALLEYLIFE qualifies for the Arizona Working Poor Tax Credit as a charitable organization helping the working poor.

West Hatcher Road, Phoenix Arizona 85021 and are open Mon-Fri from 8 am to 4 pm. We do not “prepare” for tours - you are welcome to come by anytime you are in the area.
