From the Cathedral Rector

Our second reading today comes to us from the First Letter of St. Paul to Timothy. Timothy had accompanied Paul on his apostolic journeys and has served as Paul’s messenger to some of the churches that Paul had been leading from a distance. Later Timothy himself had been appointed an overseer or “bishop” of one of the local churches. Today’s letter from St. Paul provided Timothy some practical advice about how to lead a local church community. St. Paul had some important words for Timothy, which I believe are just as important to us today. Paul writes, “First of all, I ask that supplications, petitions, prayers and thanksgivings be offered for everyone, for kings and for all in authority, that we may all lead a quiet and tranquil life in all devotion and dignity” (1 Tm 2:1). Paul exhorts us all to pray for everyone; for kings and those in civic responsibility; even those who exercise authority in such a way that may not be compatible with our Christian beliefs. The environment surrounding the early Christian community was just as hostile as the environment surrounding us today. It is easy to become discouraged in the midst of such a milieu, but it is still our responsibility as the church to continue to pray for peace, for justice, for our society and our leaders today. God indeed desires our society to be healthy, but he chooses our simple prayers to be the very channels of his grace.

Music at the 10am Solemn Mass

You might have noticed we started singing a different Gregorian chant Mass setting at the 10am Solemn Mass: Missa orbis factor.

During the past year we also have learnt two other Gregorian chant Mass settings: Missa de angelis, and Missa adventus et quadragesimae (used during Advent and Lent).

Once we know and sing Missa orbis factor with as much fervor as the other two settings, the Cathedral Community will know three Gregorian chant Mass settings!

This is our Catholic music! The universal music that has served the Church for centuries and has been passed down to us. It is timeless and unites all of our different cultures together under our common Catholic Culture. If you would like to get more familiar with Missa orbis factor you could listen to this YouTube video: https://youtu.be/onreIWhpLS8
