For the first 1,500 years of Christianity there was no "Catholicism" as it is known it today, simply because there were no other forms of Christianity to distinguish it. There was only the "one, holy, catholic church" ("catholic" means "universal"), which was the body of Christian believers all over the western world, united by common traditions, beliefs, church structure and worship. Before the Reformation in the 1500’s, if you were a Christian, you belonged to the Catholic Church. Any other form of Christianity was considered a heresy, not a Christian denomination.

Today, there are many popular forms of Christianity besides Roman Catholicism. Although the Catholic Church continues to teach that it alone has carried on the true tradition of the apostolic church, the Second Vatican Council declared all baptized Christians to be "in a certain, although imperfect, communion with the Catholic Church." So to be a Catholic today means to be a certain kind of Christian: one with beliefs, practices and traditions that differ from those of Protestantism, Anglicanism, Greek Orthodox, and other branches of modern Christianity.

Roman Catholicism is by far the largest Christian group. With more than one billion adherents, Catholics constitute about half of the world's Christians. Catholicism is the majority religion of Italy, Spain, and nearly all Latin American countries. In 2001, about 24 percent of Americans identified themselves as Catholic, making Catholicism the largest Christian denomination in America. The next largest group, Baptists, was claimed by 16 percent of Americans.

Distinctive Roman Catholic beliefs include the special authority of the pope as the successor of Peter and the guarantor of church unity, the ability of saints to intercede on behalf of believers, the concept of purgatory as a place of afterlife purification before entering heaven, and the doctrine of transubstantiation - that is, that the bread and wine used in the Eucharist becomes the true body and blood of Christ when consecrated by the priest who acts in the name of Christ.

Catholic worship follows the command that Christ gave to his disciples at the last supper, “Do this in memory of me”. The Catholic Mass is both a sacrifice of praise and a participation in a sacred meal which points to and anticipates the heavenly Supper of The Lamb. In the first part of the Mass known as the Liturgy of The Word, the teaching of the scriptures prepare the people to recognize Jesus in the breaking of the bread in its second part known as the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Christ made it crystal clear in the gospel according to John that his followers were to be as closely united to him and to each other as he and his Father were united. This unity must be more than just spiritual or figurative. In the words of St. Paul, there can be just one faith, one baptism, One God who lives in all and who works through all. It is for this reason that the Catholic Church is normally unable to offer Holy Communion to Christians who are not fully united with it.

PREPARING FOR BAPTISM CLASS

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 25TH

This one session class is required of all parents who are baptizing a child for the first time. First time godparents are also welcome, but participation is optional. Following this class, parents must contact Father Jack to see if there may be any special circumstances in scheduling the actual baptism--at least 30 days before the date you are requesting. Child care is available upon request.

Open to persons of all ages and musical experience. Musicians at St Andrew enjoy being together in fellowship and take seriously their mission to prepare music that serves the church and honors the Lord.

CLASSES RESUME SEP 11

Participation in Saturday/Sunday Mass is THE key ingredient in helping parents shape the Catholic faith of their children. It is not sufficient to just drop kids off for Sunday School. Parents are expected to participate in Mass with their children on the weekends. It would be great if parents could show their support and set the example by also participating in adult faith formation classes which often meet at the same time.
