Luke 15:1-22
When the kids were little, we played a game in the car called “Opposites.” I’d call out, “Dark,” and they’d answer, “Light!” Loud..quiet. Cold...hot. First...last. You get the idea. But the best opposite I could have thrown out was: “Son #1,” because the correct answer would be “Son #2.”
Night and day, those two. One is a clothes horse; the other would wear the same tee-shirt until it was rags. One refers to the other as a “metrosexual,” while the other calls his brother “Grizzly Adams.” One can’t wait to see the NASCAR races while the other races to Three Rivers Stadium to see the Steelers play. Outdoors vs. indoors. Star gazer vs. lady watcher. British sports car vs. Jeep with a quarter of a million miles on the odometer. Yep, night and day, those two.
Do we see that same dynamic in today’s Gospel when Jesus tells the story of two brothers—the Prodigal Son and the Dutiful Son? Are they opposites? Let’s examine them.
The younger son wants his inheritance which he promptly squanders on wild women and song. He discovers, after he is broke, that he’s not doing much better than his father’s servants. So, he goes back home to declare his sinfulness, telling his dad, “I no longer deserve to be called your son.” He receives a hero’s welcome, complete with a robe, ring, and rousing party.
The Dutiful Son works throughout all this nonsense. He doesn't ask for his inheritance. He never asks for goat feast, let alone a fatted calf party. He’s all about being the good guy in this sibling rivalry scenario. Well, except when he refuses to attend the party or forgive his brother for his poor choices.
About the only thing I see opposite with these two is that one likes to work while the other one doesn’t. Other than that, they are pretty much alike.
Both are disrespectful to their father. To the extreme! By asking for his inheritance, the younger son essentially was saying to his father, “I wish you were dead.” By not attending his brother’s party, the older son was saying, “I will dishonor you, Father, in front of all your friends.”
Both are selfish. Both are rebellious. Both are greedy. I always wonder how such a loving father ended up with two rotten kids. Eh. It was probably the mother’s fault. It’s always the mother’s fault.
Just before Jesus told this parable, he overheard the Pharisees and scribes complaining: “This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.” Guess who they are in this Prodigal Son story. Yep. They all are the Dutiful Son. They are obedient, but their hearts are bitter. They put on a good show, but their minds are closed. Jesus welcomes the tax collectors and sinners (representing the younger, errant son), while the Pharisees and scribes won’t come near. They are too busy judging.
A sinner who comes home should be welcomed. No judgment. No righteousness. No personal opinion. Just joy. Jesus proves that to us over and over again in the Gospel.
Besides, any one of us could be the younger brother. Or, the older brother, for that matter. Besides, the ones we consider most unworthy of this kind of mercy are most like us.
Let’s pray that we become merciful, like the father in this story, and like the Father of us all.

GIFTS FROM THE HOLY LAND
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Sept. 16 and 17 we will have a display of beautiful handmade olivewood
carvings from the Holy Land. The Christians of the Holy Land have been suffering
and continue to live in difficult economical situations. Olivewood carvings are part of a
tradition handed down from one generation to another; Christian families have
worked over 2000 years to protect the holy sites in Bethlehem, Jerusalem, Nazareth,
and to spread the word of Jesus. For about the past 1000 years they used carvings to
keep the Bible alive in dimensions. Our mission is to support our fellow Christians in
the Holy Land by selling some of their olive wood carvings which are one major
source for their income. Proceeds from the sale will benefit Christian families in
Bethlehem/Holy Land. Last century, the Christians were about 37% but today they
are only 5%.
By your support through the purchasing of these carvings, 200 families will be
helped to remain in the Holy Land. Supporting these families is important also for the
peace in the Middle East. Please stop by our tables and get your gifts directly from
the little town of Bethlehem.
Thank you all and God bless.

Dear Padre SEPTEMBER 11, 2016
Is it possible to replace a godfather?
Since my daughter’s baptism, my
brother-in-law has divorced his wife
and abandoned his children. I no longer
want to associate with him.
I can understand your feelings toward
your brother-in-law, given his behavior
toward his own family. However, at the
time of your daughter’s baptism, he was
accepted as her godfather and his name
was placed in the official baptismal register. I
don’t see how that official document could be
changed.
Although this loss may seem significant,
it’s important to remember that your
daughter—and you—are not alone. She
seems to have two parents, a godmother,
a pastor and parish, and other adults and
mentors who will walk with her and assist
you as she grows in faith: “For the grace
of Baptism to unfold, the parents’ help is
important. So too is the role of the godfather
and godmother….The whole ecclesial
community bears some responsibility for the
development and safeguarding of the grace
given at Baptism” (CCC 1255).
What I have recommended in similar
situations is that you now choose and ask
a person whom you know and trust to be
your daughter’s “acting” godfather.” As
your daughter gets older you could explain to
her that this person really cares about her and
will be like a godfather to her. I think this
might be a good family solution.

ELECTRONIC GIVING?
WHAT’S THAT?
Electronic giving will enable every household or individual to
make their church offering using electronic funds transfer or
credit card. You may already be using online bill pay for your
mortgage, car payment, or insurance premium through an
automatic withdrawal from your checking or savings account.
Many of you also have used your credit cards to purchase
goods online through Amazon, eBay, or a number of other
sites.
We have teamed up with myEoffering to enable you to use the
same process to give your offering electronically from your
bank account, credit or debit cards.
There is no cost to you for this new giving option. If you are
currently giving on a weekly basis, you will no longer need to
write out 52 checks a year or prepare 52 envelopes. And when
travel, illness or other circumstances prevent you from
attending services, this program will allow your weekly offerings
to continue uninterrupted.
You can begin participating in the electronic giving program
immediately. Just visit our church website and look for the
