24TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
24th Sunday in Ordinary Time After a particularly difficult after-noon, a very unhappy 7 year-old re-treated to her room. Her mother found her, laying on her bed and reciting the ro-sary. “Mommy, I am trying so hard to be good and I am praying all day. But it’s just not working!” We can be very impatient with our-selves, especially when we are trying to change. Whether we are trying to lose weight, master a skill, or end a bad habit, it can be frustrating not to see immediate progress. We may even judge ourselves and give up because we are just too lazy, tired, or old to make the change we know we need. Spiritual change is also difficult. Even St. Paul said that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Doubts can linger, temptation can grow stronger, and virtue can seem impossible. Worse, we know what we need to do and we want to do it right now. But it does not work that way. We need patience and perseverance, de-termination and a reliance on God’s grace to achieve what we know we need to do. We need the support of our family, working together to overcome the failings and faults that can easily divide us. An openness about our own struggles en-courages everyone to face their own sins and choose grace. Pray, sacrifice, sacra-ment and practice will help virtue take root in the field of our soul. Keep on praying! It really does work! ~James Gaffney, © 2009 Karides Lic. to

The 7th Annual Archdiocesan Justice Convocation will be held on Saturday, October 24, 8:30am–1:30pm. This year’s theme is “Care of our Common Home—Welcoming Immigrants/Refugees and Promoting Environ-mental Stewardship.” Pope Francis has launched his long awaited encyclical Laudato Si! (Praised Be! On the Care of our Common Home). One of the Con-vocation Keynote Speakers, Dr. Carolyn Woo, President of Catholic Relief Ser-vices, was with the Holy Father in Rome speaking at the launch. To register visit www.bostoncatholic.org. The objective of the Convocation is to explore ways that local parishes can address these global challenges and how we, as a Church, can make a significant impact in promoting justice and peace. The convocation will be held at the Archdi-ocesan Pastoral Center, 66 Brooks Drive, Braintree, mixing-and-matching the class locations and times that work for you. You do not have to register for classes at your own parish.

Meet Fr. Joy −Living Up to His NameFr. Bill Joy is no stranger to the city of Boston.
A second generation Irish Catholic, he was baptized in the same Dorchester parish where he later served a vibrant Haitian community for many years. When the earthquake hit Haiti in 2010, almost every one of his parishioners lost one or more of their family members. Despite these tragic events, his parish remained a strong example of the living Church—a joy-filled community that drew strength from each other and their shared love of God.
Through times of celebration and times of great sorrow, Fr. Joy remained true to his name, joyfully sharing the love of Christ among a community of believers who strive to live each day in His Name.
Our priests are there for us and our families when we need them. Now, it’s time for us to be there when they need us.
To support Fr. Joy and his brother priests, text the word PRIEST to 56512 or make a gift through your parish collection on September 19-20.
Thank you for helping to ensure a continuum of care for the active and senior priests who joyfully serve our Archdiocese of Boston.
“Support your priests with your love and prayers, that they may always be shepherds after Christ’s heart.”
- Pope Francis
