service to London, which takes just under two

opportunities for day trips to the picturesque

countryside and coastline of East Anglia.

This region is famous for its unspoilt countryside

area is a popular holiday destination. There are

many small villages and large stately homes

to visit, as well as miles of riverside walks and

cycle paths, which can be found only a shortdistance from the city. Norwich is also only

30 kilometres from the sea, and the Norfolk

coastline is home to beautiful beaches and

wildlife sanctuaries. A survey found that East

Over 90,000 students in more than 100

The Newton Scholars stream and the Newton

Programme each offer two programme options

for students: a six-term programme starting in

September and a five-term programme starting

in January. Similar academic content is taught

on both programmes; however, the pace of the

six-term programme is slightly gentler than that

of the five-term programme. Students on the

six-term programme have more time to settle in

to Newton life and will also receive additional

teaching time in all subjects during the first

year of study, with an emphasis on study

skills and laboratory skills. They also follow

an examined course in Global Perspectives.

In addition to the key subjects, and where

    necessary; students on both programmes

also undertake a programme of English for

Academic Purposes and Study Skills. The final

three terms are identical for both intakes.

We offer a range of subject pathways -

use the table below to select the pathway

that corresponds to the undergraduatedegree you plan to study at university.

    a-v p sc

In both programmes you choose four subjects

in your first year of study, and take the AS-level

examination in each of these subjects at the end

of the first year (an AS-level covers approximately

half of the full A-level). This lets you experiment

with a fourth subject before choosing your

final A-levels. Most students then commit to

three subjects for the final three terms. If your

performance is excellent you may be allowed

to continue with four subjects throughoutthe final three terms of the programme.

In the early stages of the course, emphasis

is placed on helping you through the difficult

academic transition to CIE A-level. All

students are taught essential study skills

    including planning and time management,

    both essential for A-level success.

At AS-level and A-level, aspects of the

    following subjects are studied: the

    accounting system; financial accounting;

    financial reporting; and interpretation and

    elements of managerial accounting..

    B

The Biology A-level course covers basic biological

principles such as cell biology, biochemistry

and homeostasis together with more applied

topics such as genetic engineering, health and

disease. Topics are taught in an interesting,

    integrated manner with learning enhanced

through practical sessions, visits and talks

from outside speakers. The course is of

particular interest to those wishing to study

life or health-related sciences in the future.

    Chs

The Chemistry A-level course covers: atoms,

    molecules and stoichiometry; atomic structure;

chemical bonding; states of matter; chemical

    energetics; electrochemistry; equilibria;

    reaction kinetics, Inorganic chemistry; Organic

    chemistry; and Applications of chemistry.

    Phscs

Physics is the fundamental science which

    supports and underpins other scientific

disciplines. The AS year covers the fundamental

concepts of classical physics (key physical

    quantities, kinematics, forces, energy, momentum,

waves), electricity, and the structure of the

atom. There is strong emphasis on practical

work and problem solving. The A2 year covers

    field theory, thermodynamics and energy-mass

    equivalence, applied physics including medical

    physics, electronics and communication theory.

Students with a good A-level pass in physics

are greatly in demand at university, and go on to

study a wide range of sciences and engineering

courses, as well as economics, business and law.

    Psch

    The AS-level covers subjects including:

    cognitive, social, developmental and

    physiological psychology; psychology of

    individual differences. At A-level, students

will study how psychology is applied in two

of the following areas: education; health; the

    environment; abnormality; and organisations.

    eccs

The CIE Economics A-level syllabus covers:

basic economic ideas; the price system

and the theory of the firm; government

intervention in the price system; international

trade; theory and measurement in the

    macroeconomy; macroeconomic problems;

    and macroeconomic policies.

    mhcs

Students study Pure Mathematics and either

Mechanics or Statistics. The Pure Mathematics

    component includes algebra, co-ordinate

geometry, calculus and vectors. In Mechanics

students learn how to apply Newtons Laws

of Motion in a variety of contexts, whilst in

Statistics they study probability theory and

the interpretation and analysis of data.

Assessment is by two examinations: AS taken

in either May or November of the fi rst year, andA2 taken at the end of the two year course.

    Fh mhcs

This course is for strong mathematicians who

wish to gain an additional A-level in Mathematics.

It is particularly suitable for those aiming to study

either Mathematics or Engineering at university.

Students study further pure topics such as linear

algebra and differential equations. They also

study both Mechanics and Statistics to a much

greater depth than in the Mathematics course.

There is no AS examination in Further

    Mathematics. Problems are generally more

demanding than those at A-level. Studentswho take this course must also take A-level

    Mathematics and, therefore, be prepared

to spend around 12 hours per week in

Mathematics classes as well as undertaking

    a substantial amount of preparation.

    Please note: Further Mathematics

is not available for study to AS-level.

    S scc wh scc hpps

A-level courses will develop your creative thinking and problem-solving skills, which inturn will help you to succeed in any future career path. A-levels are ideal for continued
