We hear the term “sustainable” a lot, but what will it take to achieve a sustainable world for all—a world with no poverty, a thriving planet, and peace and prosperity? The Sustainable Develop-ment Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a blueprint for all countries to work to-gether to reach global sustainability by 2030. At this year’s World Affairs Institute, hear from in-spirational leaders who will address the three pil-lars of sustainability: economic, social, and envi-ronmental. Learn how you can use your creativity, your knowhow, and technology to help build a world in which no one is left behind.
Registration will open soon! Contact your spon-soring Rotary Club to see if they are offering schol-arships for you to attend.

INFO FOR NOW OR
FOR THE FUTURE
Did you know that scholarships are available for
those who are looking to earn their Masters Degree?
Applicants must attend a learning institution out-
side of the United States and must be in an area of
study that falls under one of the six areas of focus of
Rotary International. We know that you are still in
high school but please keep this opportunity in the
back of your mind and perhaps you may have a rela-
tive who is contemplating earning a Masters Degree
outside of the United States. Applicants must not be
a Rotarian or child or grandchild of a Rotarian. For
additional information and any questions, please
contact Pat Shaffer at [email protected].

One Day. One Focus:
Ending Polio
24 October
The Conemaugh
Township High School
Rotary Interact club has
gone through many
changes over the last few
months. First, we started
an annual soccer tourna-
ment for charity in June.
The event raised over
$4,000 for SHOFCO - a
charity that works to
build urban promise out
of urban poverty in Africa.
We also celebrated the
graduation of 14 of our senior members who moved onto
the next chapter of their lives taking many experiences
from Rotary Interact with them.
Over the Summer, we worked alongside Common
Grounds Outreach for their annual “Serve Week”. This
has been our third year working with them on this pro-
ject. During this week of volunteer work, members of
both groups did a variety of service projects. This includ-
ed working on the new Quemahoning Dam trails, doing
yard work for elderly neighbors, and creating a sustaina-
ble garden at the high school. The sustainable garden is
part of a three-year project planned by our Rotary Inter-
act club. The garden will help members of the community
and our life skills class. In the future, an outdoor class-
room and pollinator garden will be added.
With the new school year beginning, we have 40
new members! Our club has never had numbers this
high. With all the new members, our goal of having at
least one service project per month will be reached easily.
Both new and old members alike are excited to see what
this year has in store for us!
Summer vacations and hectic back to school schedules didn't stop Greensburg Salem In-teractors from serving their community the past few months! Check out some of the activi-ties they've been helping with:
GS Interact sponsored the Service Above Self 5K on Memorial Day, raising funds to support Wounded Warrior Project and PA Hero Walk. Interact donated $1,000 to each or-ganization!
Interactors helped during Nicely Elemen-tary School’s Annual Color Run.
Three Interactors distributed food boxes to senior citizens residing in Penn Towers in Greensburg for the Westmoreland County Food Bank.
Thunder, lightning and downpours couldn’t keep Interactors from passing out food during a local food bank distribution!
Several Interactors helped Greensburg Rotarians and the Greensburg Volun-teer Fire Department pack over 400 hy-giene packs which were distributed at the Greensburg Salvation Army’s Back to School Bash at St. Clair Park. While volunteering at the Back to School Bash, not only did Interactors help distribute the hygiene packs but they also helped local students choose a new book at the Greensburg Salem table. What a fantastic event to help students in need!
Greensburg Salem Interact is looking forward to running the school district’s Pink Out campaign and hosting the 3rd Annual Harlem Wizards event this Fall.
The Greensburg Salem High School Interact Club pre-
sents, The Harlem Wizards vs. The Greensburg Salem All
-Stars on Tuesday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m. in the high
school gym. For information, please contact Melissa
Bowman at [email protected].

Now is the time to start to get your planning done for this
year’s Cards for Veterans. I will need to receive ALL
CARDS no later than Friday, December 4. Remember
that cards must not be in envelopes, must not be reli-
gious in nature and must not contain glitter.
A lot of Interact Clubs get their elementary schools in-
volved by having the younger students make “home
made” cards. Remember that cards can contain a mes-
sage thanking the veteran for their service and can be
signed with just a first name, NO LAST NAMES.
Since we have doubled the number of Interact Clubs in
our new District, we should have no problem breaking
last year’s record of 9,748 cards.
Activity Fair- The Interact Club or-
ganized an Activity Fair during Back
to School night at the senior and jun-
ior high schools for parents and dur-
ing school lunches for the students
throughout the week. Clubs and organizations spread
the word about what they do and recruited new stu-
dents to participate.
Somerset County
Food Bank Food Dis-
tribution- Interactors
helped distribute and
carry food for people
during the monthly food
distribution.
Dressed- Interactors volun-
teered with the non-profit or-
ganization, Dressed, to set up
for their 2019 Homecoming
Shop at a local church. The In-
teractors helped organize dress-
es by sizes, set up shoes and
jewelry, and made sure every-
thing was set up for the Friday
night and Saturday shops in
September. Once the event
concluded, interactors helped
tear down the remaining dresses and accessories.
Festival of Books- Interactors volunteered at the Festival of Books event that was held in Uptown Som-erset on a Saturday in Septem-ber. Members of the communi-ty were encouraged to come out and listen to authors read their books or enjoy talking to the authors. The Interactors helped set up tents and tear them down once the event was over.
Pictured are the officers of Ligonier Valley
High School Interact Club meeting with the
officers of Latrobe High School Interact
Club to plan and discuss the Lip Sync Battle.
The Lip Sync Battle is a fundraiser taking
place at 6:30pm on November 22 at Ligonier Valley High
School. All of the money raised will be donated to local
food pantries in Ligonier and Latrobe. There will be con-
cessions and a basket raffle at the fundraiser as well. Our
goal is to have 20 total acts and lots of people in the audi-
ence for a great turn out to support a good cause!
