    President Doris

    - opened the 18 February 2015 weekly meeting and welcomed the Members, Visiting Rotarians and Guests. - showed a Rotary video entitled: ‘Rotary – Make a World of Difference’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ubqc7_MnBeE

    - noted the apologies from Rtns. HM Daniel, Sally, Henny, Ralph, Jerry, Edgar, Treas. Stephen, Alex P., Udo, Samia, Dr. Jürgen, Catharina, Christiane, Jan and VP Yuki. - asked SaA Raphaël to introduce the guests.

    - thanked the following RCBS members for inviting some Guests to the meeting:

P Doris for inviting Ursula Grossmann & Maree Voller. PE Barb for inviting Gaye Warren & Tineke Indradjaja. VP John G. for inviting Richard Llewellyn, the Guest Speaker. Sec. CP Patrick for inviting Stephen Lomax, Jannell Lee & Marlene Lee. Rtn. Maureen for inviting Wendy Stewart. Rtn. Alex J. for inviting his Trans Resort Bali Management Team: Tina Tandrum, Dwi Christinengrum, Dodik Purwedi, Made Arta, Allen Stevano and Joko Utomo.

    - inducted the RCBS’ 57th member (No. 8 this year), Alexander M. Jovanovic. After receiving his Rotary pin, Rtn. Alex took a few minutes and told the members a little bit about himself.

Rtn. Alex was born on 30 May 1961 to immigrant parents from the former Yugoslavia, now Serbia. He grew up and was educated in Adelaide, SA, Australia. After completing year 11, he applied for and was accepted to a four-year nursing course at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. After qualifying as a nurse and working professionally in this field for a period of time, he decided to widen his horizons and try his hand at a few other jobs. By chance, one of Alex’s regular customers, at a roadhouse restaurant, happened to be the HR Manager for the Darwin Sheraton. To make a long story short, Alex submitted his application and has been in the hospitality industry for more than 35 years. During his career he has worked as a front office manager, assistant manager, senior manager, assistant resident manager and GM. He has worked in eight countries and opened nine hotels in his career to date. After working with the Hyatt for 15 years, he moved to Indonesia to work as the GM of the Mulia. Whilst in Indonesia, Alex and two business associates opened up their own business called Bali Deli in Bali, a supermarket, which sold western food and specialty items like cheese. Because Bali Deli seemed to fill a niche, Alex and his associates decided to open their second store in Jakarta within a shopping mall.

    ANNOUNCEMENTS

In 2003, Alex moved to Dubai to explore his real passion – developing hotels. However, when the global financial crisis hit in 2005, many investment groups had financial problems. Instead of waiting to see what was going to happen to the company he was working for, Alex decided to go back to Indonesia to continue his passion as a hotel developer. Currently Alex is working as a Director of Hotel and Resort Development for one of Indonesia’s most successful companies – PT Trans Corporations. Alex has developed Indonesia’s first six star hotel – The Trans Luxury Hotel in Bandung and is presently opening The Trans Resort Bali, Kerobokan. In his free time (between 02:00 – 04:00 !!!) he enjoys running (regularly runs half marathons and has completed six full marathons in different countries), cycling, travelling and reading. In closing, Rtn. Alex said it was a great honor and privilege to join the RCBS and he hoped that with a new venue, he will be able to help the Club continue to grow, so that it will be able to do MORE humanitarian work for our community.

    - wished a HAPPY Birthday to Rtns. Handy (21 Feb.) and PP Anita (24 Feb.)

    - informed the members that this week’s International Rotary Greeting Card will be sent to the RC of Berlin Nord, Germany – where Rtn. Jörg often visits.

    - presented Rtn. Jörg with his (PHF + 1 / US$ 2,000) recognition pin. Rtn. Jörg said it gave him great pleasure to support The Rotary Foundation (TRF) because he knows that his contribution will enable Rotary to continue to fund their global programs, e.g. PolioPlus, Peace Fellowships and Humanitarian Grants. Rtn. Jörg also said he greatly admired and respected our dedicated members like P Doris, Rtn. Detlev, Sec. CP Patrick, the Board Members and Committee Chairs, to mention just a few, because they GIVE a lot of their personal time to make the RCBS the BEST Club in Bali. I am very proud to be a member of this very ACTIVE Rotary Club.

    - thanked Rtns. SaA Jan, Maureen and Alex J. for each contributing US$ 100 to The Rotary Foundation (TRF).

PP Anita then took a few minutes and gave the members some interesting FACTS about The Rotary Foundation (TRF): At the 1917 Rotary International Convention, outgoing President Arch Klumph proposed to set up an endowment ‘for the purpose of doing good in the world.’ By 1928, it was renamed, ‘The Rotary Foundation.’ The first contribution was for US$500 to the International Society of Crippled Children, which later turned into Easter Seals. When Rotary founder, Paul Harris died in 1947, contributions began to pour into Rotary International and the Paul Harris Memorial Fund was created to build the Foundation. Between 1947 and 2013, RI has established a number of very beneficial programs, i.e. Ambassadorial Scholarships, Group Study Exchange, Matching Grants, Hunger and Humanity (3 H Grants, the PolioPlus Eradication Program, Rotary Peace Fellowships and more recently the New District, Global and Packaged Grants which enable Rotarians around the world to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty. The Rotary Foundation has traditionally paid most of its operating expenses with investment earnings. To ensure that our Foundation has sufficient and reliable resources in the future, the Trustees have approved a funding model, effective as 1 July 2015. The changes are small but will have a big impact on the Foundation's ability to support large-scale, sustainable projects for years to come. The change is that 5% of contributions to the Annual Fund will be earmarked for operating expenses or for building the Foundation's operating reserve. However, these changes will not affect how much DDFs a club will receive. Like in the past, if a Club donates US$ 10,000 to TRF, after three years they will receive US$ 5,000 back, which should be used equally between a District Grant and a Global Grant. The RCBS is currently utilizing its DDFs in this manner. For further information about these recent changes, please download the ‘A Rotary Primer’ http://therotarianmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/FEB15-Global-Outlook12.2.pdf PP Anita touched briefly on TRF’s Peace Fellowships. In just over a decade, the five Rotary Peace Centers have trained more than 900 fellows for careers in peace building. Many of them go on to serve as leaders in national governments, NGOs, the military, law enforcement and international organizations like the United Nations and World Bank. Lastly, because TRF helps so many needed people around the world, please consider supporting the ‘Every Rotarian Every Year’ (EREY) program by contributing a minimum of US$ 100 to the Foundation yearly and ‘Make a Difference.’

VP PP John once again enthusiastically gave the members an update about the Club’s upcoming ‘Have a Heart’ fundraiser for its Cleft Lip/Palate project. The Gala evening is being planned for Friday, 10 April 2015. 200 + people are expected for this special fundraising event for the Smile Foundation Bali. VP John said hopefully we can fill the ballroom and have 300 people enjoying this wonderful event.

The evening will be a fun-packed evening starting off with a cocktail hour, followed by a three-course dinner and then a theatre performance by two Hong Kong artists, Ms Sandra Leung Waters and Mr. Michael Sharmon. They will be singing many Broadway and Film favorites like, ‘Some Enchanted Evening’ from the musical ‘South Pacific,’ ‘Fly Me To The Moon’ by Frank Sinatra, ‘Je Ne Regrette Rien’ by Edith Piaff and many others. Later in the evening, a live band will be playing – so stay until late and dance the night away to all your favorite tunes. Tickets will be on sale very soon at IDR 850,000 per person. If someone / company purchase a table of 10, the price will be IDR 7,650,000. ‘Major donors’ will get a free table for 10 people, prime table positioning in the event and plenty of media coverage.

Lastly, VP PP John said that his Committee is now in the process of looking for RAFFLE PRIZES and that ALL members were kindly asked to donate/find suitable prizes for the evening. Your HELP with this will greatly ensure that we have a very successful evening.

‘Enviro Pallets – Creating Value from Waste’ By Richard Llewellyn

The Guest Speaker, Richard Llewellyn, informed members about a company he is currently involved in called Enviro Pallets, which recycles waste plastic (shopping bags, plastic straws etc. that no-one else wants), into export shipping pallets. This wonderful process has a dual benefit; cleaning up Bali and reducing the world’s deforestation (6 billion wooden pallets made every year account for 40%). Richard outlined four important reasons for developing this initiative:

    1. Waste stream currently entering landfills each year globally is estimated to be in excess of 3.9 billion tons of which 12% is plastic*

    2. New plastic resin production consumes over 4% of the world’s oil

    every year**

    3. The pallet production industry is the largest user of sawn timber after the construction industry

    4. 41% of all pallets manufactured are only used 2-6 times (average

life) with 29% only used once

*Source: OECD Environmental Data Compendium, US Census Bureau and Environmental Protection Agency **Source: US Energy Information Administration (extrapolated based on US oil refinery information).

Richard then went and shared some very interesting facts about recycling Plastics: Plastics have traditionally been difficult to recycle as the various polymers had to be separated and cleaned to achieve levels of 99% purity. The effort required to do this has been expensive until the invention of Thermo-fusion™

The patented Thermo-fusion™ process takes mixed waste plastics, which are destined for landfill, and converts this resource into high performance, resilient and, environmentally sustainable pallets. Thermo-fusion™ can recycle all plastics without the need to sort. Thermo-fusion™ takes contaminated plastics and makes plastic pallets without the need to eliminate glass, metal, paper and cardboard. He concluded his fascinating talk by outlining how Enviro Pallets is working with the ‘Community’ to help Bali become more environmentally sustainable:

! Enviro Pallet is working with the Green School to establish a village based waste plastic collection model

commencing with Green School itself ! The first major shipment from the school is being made to the factory this week ! Students are in class competition to collect the most clean waste plastic from their homes and around their

villages ! In addition they have installed a catchment point in the river to extract waste plastic before it flows out to sea ! Subject to refinement of this process it could be applied to the many other streams in Bali ! We will be seeking corporate sponsors for the establishment of village “Kiosks” for the collection and

payment of waste plastic To learn more about this revolutionary concept, please visit their web site: www.enviropallets.com
