Program NotesLe Roi D’Ys Overture
Lalo, Edouard(1823-1892)
Born in France, Lalo studied at the Paris Conservatoire. A
string player and teacher, he was notwell-knownasacomposer.Hisstyle is distinctive, however, and in his late forties, he gained fame whenhewroteTheKingofYs(LeRoiD’Ys).ThisoperawasLalo’smostaccomplishedandcomplexwork.
Based on the Breton legend of thefateofthetownYs,thissamelegend inspired Debussy to write his famous piano piece. The story tellsofakingwithtwodaughters. He arranges marriages for both, which leads to controversy and drama as one of the daughters was hoping to marry the other one’s betrothed. In revenge, she arrangesforherfiancétoopenthefloodgatesofthecity, whichfloodshalf the town…Then, in regret, she prevents total destruction by flingingherselfintotheseaasasacrificetothegods.
Violin Concerto No. 1 in E Major
Mendelssohn, Felix(1809-1847)
Born in Germany, Mendelssohn was a child prodigy, and grew
up in an intellectual, artistic family. This privileged life led to his being introduced to people and cultures thatinfluencedhimandhismusicfrom an early age. Friendships with Goethe and Queen Victoria spread hisinfluenceandfametoaudiencesbeyond Germany. His conservative musicalstylelikenedhimmoreto Mozart than to the composers of his day, such as Liszt, Berlioz, and Wagner. Mendelssohn was instrumentalinreawakeninganinterest in the music of Bach. While theseclassicalinfluencedformedthebackboneofhisstyle,Mendelssohndid add a touch of romanticism popular in his day. He wrote many styles of music: for piano, stage, choral, orchestra and chamber orchestra. One of his most beloved compositions has always been the Violin Concerto in E Major.
Enthusiastically received, the concerto is considered a standard in the violinist’s repertoire. One of the
unusual elements of this piece isthatthesoloistentersthefirstmovement before the orchestra. Traditionally, the orchestra wouldbeginfirst, settingthestage for the soloist’s entrance. At the end of this movement, the bassoonist holds his note into the keychangeandbeginningofthesecond movement, preventing applause from the audience. This was unusual for concertos at this time. This concerto has many demanding and beautiful passages for the solo violinist, and showcases many of the artist’s abilities. The orchestra has more than just a supportive role in this piece, as its part is intimately integrated and interwoven with the violinist’s melody throughout this lovely composition.
Beloved by audiences everywhere, Mendelssohn showed himself to be a Renaissance man of his time, excellingineverythingheattemptedtodo.Histaste, wisdomandcharminfluencedthose around him and as a conductor he inspired orchestras to perform to the very best of their ability.
