I want to thank everyone for your patience and flexibility as we completed our

remodeling project in the Center. Look at the pictures on page 18 and I hope you

will all stop by and see it in person. The doors that separate our main room, and

the wall above them, have created a wonderful atmosphere where those in the

room can comfortably hear what’s happening, while the visitors to the office area

can freely communicate. Our remodeled office/work room is efficient for everyone

needing it. The addition of carpeting and round tables in our back room are

enjoyed by many of our groups, and the new multipurpose room offers a private

place for our wellness services and small meetings.

We are giving our facility a little “Colorado flair” by officially naming our

public rooms. Please join us in calling them by these names:

Vista Room (our main room with the great view, or vista)

Big Horn Room (the back room or former “Moo Mag” room)

Summit Room (the library and conference room)

Aspen Room (the former copier room across from the Summit Room)

Columbine Room (the room with the craft materials in the front area)

We are so grateful for this space from the Town of Castle Rock, and these

upgrades give us a little more room and efficient use of the facilities. Enjoy!

A Note from the Director

Stop by and say hi to Susan Santamaria-Fenton, who now oversees our VOA

lunch meals and other food-related programs for the Center. She was a volunteer

for VOA lunches for more than a year and has enthusiastically jumped into her

new role. She says the VOA lunch crowd is such a happy group to be around.

Susan moved here with her husband about 20 years ago, after having grown up on

the east coast. She had previously spent years working in the field of corporate

fitness, at Land’s End among other places, after receiving her masters degree in

exercise science. They have a grown son who is a producer with Channel 4 News,

and a daughter who recently moved back to the area, working in fashion. Susan

has been an instructor at the Rec Center, where many of you may have seen her.

She loves attending sporting events of any kind, spending time outdoors in our

beautiful state, doing adventurous things, and going on long walks with her golden

lab dog. Susan loves to travel, once going to Europe for a month. She hopes to go

to Tahiti one day. Welcome, Susan.

Two special membership designations are voted upon by the Executive Board, with individual members having the opportunity to nominate potential designees. Lifetime Members are those members who have dedicated a great deal of personal energy and time to the mission of the Castle Rock Senior Activity Center, serving on the Board of Directors or leading supporting activities. This is a permanent designation. Honorary Members are non-members of the Center, and the designation is usually reserved for government officials or others who have provided ongoing support of the Center. Their status will be reviewed annually. Nominations for candidates to be considered for either of these classifications will be accepted annually from July 1 through August 31. They will be reviewed and voted upon by the Executive Board, with the presentations of Honorary and Lifetime memberships made at the Annual Meeting in November. Information about nominating will be in the July and August Rockin’ Seniors newsletters.

We hope to have an announcement soon regarding the opportunity to continue our Scholarship Program for members. The request for grant funding through the Lillis Foundation is in progress. Watch this space in future issues for application procedures for those seeking financial assistance to participate in our activities.

We welcome these new members from February. Glenda Martinez is our New Member Ambassador on our Membership Committee. She would love to assist new members in getting involved and meeting others. Newcomer “Meet & Greet” on the 2nd Tuesday at 10:00 to meet others & be welcomed.

You have chosen a great place to get involved, and we are glad to welcome you.

Some volunteer roles are quite visible around our Center, but there are countless

others that are behind-the-scenes and equally important. Our April Volunteer of the

Month is one of those; Larry Adams leads the Remembering our Veterans special

interest group. Larry facilitates the monthly meetings where veterans tell their stories,

but there is so much more to make the group successful. He has to find the people

willing to share their experiences, which requires constant networking. Then he plans

logistics, including dates and audio-visual needs; Larry purchased his own AV

equipment for these meetings and does all the set-up and tear-down on his own. In

addition, Larry writes the promotional material for the newsletter and keeps veterans

apprised of happenings for them outside the Senior Center. It’s most interesting that he

does all this without being a veteran himself. He was the facilitator of a Great Books

program where he met Derald Hoffman who told him about this group because of his

avid interest in military history. Larry started coming to the group, which was begun by

Bob Aust, Maxine McDonald, Darrell Adams, and Derald Hoffman. He took over

running it in 2011. He was also instrumental in bringing the stories of World War II veterans to life for students at Douglas

County High School, a program which he plans to continue this year.

Larry is married to Sandra, whom he met in his hometown. They have a daughter and two grandsons; he is very proud that

they are following in Grandpa’s footsteps, as they are in STEM programs.

Larry grew up in Hamburg, PA, where he became “addicted to books” ever since getting his library card to the Carnegie

Library in town. He developed a love of building model airplanes and rockets, knowing he wanted to be an aerospace

engineer by the ninth grade. He graduated from the University of Michigan with bachelors, masters and professional degrees

in aerospace engineering. He moved to Colorado where he spent his professional years with Martin Marietta, which is now

Lockheed Martin. He worked on the team that developed Skylab, America’s first space station, and was on the flight team for

the Viking Mars Lander Mission. He also played a role in a classified defense system for the military, and then was the

Systems Design Lead for the Mars Odyssey Orbiter until he retired. What a remarkable career he has had, a true rocket

scientist right here in our Senior Center! Larry retired in 2001 after what he admits was a very stressful, but rewarding, career.

He was ready to retire - but not slow down - which is evident by all that he does.

Larry has been a runner for 50 years and has run in marathons; today he only runs 2 miles a day, 3 days a week, enough to

stay healthy. He is also a cyclist. He has spent 10 years reading to pre-school classes, through a program at the library. In

addition, he and Sandra have been square-dancing since the mid-1980’s and dance with the Sunflower Squares in Castle Rock.

Always continuing his quest to learn and grow, he has participated in about 20 Road Scholar programs, formerly known as

Elderhostel, which he loves because they take care of all the details of the trips. He has rafted the Grand Canyon, gone to

Hawaii, Alaska and Normandy, and he especially enjoys the programs about the Southwest.

Larry is one busy man, but he is also a wonderful volunteer here. He not only honors those who have served our country,

but he treats his volunteer responsibilities with a rare dedication we all admire. Thank you, Larry Adams.

$15 for members for 30 minutes Please call the front desk to schedule, limited to one per week. By applying pressure to specific points on your hands or feet, pain or stress on

other areas of the body can be alleviated.

So, as Spring arrives, instead of spring cleaning, how about a Spring Safety Check around your home? Take the time to really look closely at the following areas to see if you can change something to reduce your risk of having a fall.

Floors - look at each room: Do you have to walk around furniture? If yes, it’s best to get help to move it. Do you have throw rugs? If yes, either remove or use a non-slip backing on the rugs, so they won't slip. Are there papers, books, shoes, magazines, boxes or other objects on the floor? If yes, pick them up before you trip on them.

Stairs and steps: Are there items on the steps, like shoes? Always keep your steps clear of any objects. Is the lighting adequate? Do you need to replace a light bulb? Can you turn on the light at both the top and bottom of inside stairs? Is the carpet or wood loose on any steps? Are the handrails loose or broken? Consider both inside and outside steps in this process, as paying attention and getting these items repaired can reduce your chance of falling.

Kitchens: Are the items you most frequently use on the easiest shelves to reach? Do you have a stepstool to use with a bar to grab if you are considering getting something down from a higher shelf?

Bathrooms: Do you have non-skid strips or a mat on the floor of your tub and/or shower? Place grab bars in and by your tub, plus by your toilet; they can help you change positions more safely. Permanently mounted bars are better than suction ones. There is even one you can attach over the side of the tub for getting in and out.

What do you do if you decide you need a light bulb changed, a stair railing fixed, or maybe you could use a couple more grab bars around the house? There are places you can call for a handyman to help you in the Castle Rock area. While the labor is provided free of charge, you will need to pay for materials. Two places you can call for this type of services are: New Hope Presbyterian Church's “Fix it” program at 303-881-8371 and Neighbor Network at 303-814-4300. Call now before summer arrives! The planning meeting for the Senior Center Garden will be Monday, April 3 at 1:00 PM.

There are many ways to be involved in the garden. Everyone is welcome to come to the meeting to see what’s involved. There is no experience necessary, and our special raised beds make it possible to sit and garden. We’ll be planning the garden at this

meeting, so participants get a say in what’s planted. Volunteers get first pick from the harvest, with

additional produce brought to the Center and put out on the “free table.”

Maxine McDonald will present the program

“One Woman’s Role during WWII” at the

April Remembering Our Veterans meeting.

She will describe her role as a draftsperson at

Curtiss Wright Aircraft during the war.

Following her slide presentation she will

invite attendees to tell us about how their

mother, grandmother, or other female

relatives may have contributed to the war

effort either in military service or on the home front.

This is a brand new class put on by our wonderful public servants at the fire department because they care about the safety of the seniors in our community. The class

will cover topics such as: safety in the home, when to call 9-1-1, how to identify signs and symptoms of a stroke and heart attack, and getting out safely in a fire. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion. You can sign up for this free class on the Sign-Up Sheet on page

19, and you are asked to come to all three sessions if at all possible to get the most out of the class.

MYSTERY TRIP Friday, April 7 8:45 AM $10 ($16 non-members) This trip had a special early sign-up in March and is full This Mystery Trip, planned by Tina, had an early sign-up because of security clearances. Each person will need to bring that same ID on the trip, and it will be checked. No weapons or firearms of any kind are allowed. The trip will involve both indoor and outdoor walking, so dress appropriately for the weather. We

will stop for lunch (not included in Activity Fee) on our way back to the Center. We should be back between 3:00-3:30. Those who use our transportation services will need to find their own rides to and from their homes. Thank you for reading and following these procedures.

TRIP - Backstage Tour of Valor Theater Department Wednesday, April 12 8:15 AM $5 ($11 non-members) If you love the theater, you probably wonder how they make the magic happen. If you used to be involved in theater back in the day, you’d probably be amazed at the technology available now to make productions special. We have arranged a private tour of a new and high-tech theater program at Valor Christian High School - before we also go take a trip to see their spring musical, “Pippin” later that week. You might not get a chance like this again, so please join us if you have a theater bug. After we come back to town, we encourage everyone to go out to eat for Dining-to-Donate at Outback Steakhouse.

Pippin is an award-winning Broadway musical with show-stopping music by Stephen Schwartz. They are holding 30 tickets for us which must be purchased ahead, so the deadline to sign up is on Sign-Up Day.

SHOPPING TRIP - Aspen Grove & The Bistro for Lunch Monday, April 17 10:00 AM $6 ($12 non-members) It’s spring and time to start enjoying outdoor malls again. Aspen Grove, in Littleton, has some great stores like Tattered Cover Bookstore, Williams and Sonoma, Yankee Candle, Pottery Barn and outlets like Chicos and Lane Bryant. After shopping, at 12:30 we will go as a group to The Bistro for lunch from their menu of American favorites. We should be back in Castle Rock by 2:30 PM.

THEATER - “Evita” at Lone Tree Arts Center Wednesday, April 19 12:45 PM $40 ($46 non-members) The Andrew Lloyd Webber music in “Evita” is something you won’t forget. Of course, everyone knows “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” in this story of Argentina’s Eva Peron. This is a 1/2 price matinee which we secured 20 tickets months ago, as we knew it would be popular and sold out.

SHOW - “Ms. Colorado Senior America Pageant” At Lakewood Cultural Center Sunday, April 23 12:30 PM $28 ($34 non-members) DEADLINE TO SIGN UP IS 4:00 PM ON FRIDAY, MARCH 31 The “Ms. Colorado Senior America Pageant” is proof positive that seniors can do anything they make up their mind to. We’re going to the finals of this annual pageant to watch the crowning of the senior who will represent Colorado in the national Ms. Senior America Pageant. While you may not personally know any of the contestants, they all deserve the cheers and support of fellow seniors. Please feel free to bring snacks and water for the bus rides as we will be traveling to Lakewood and will not be stopping for a meal. The show is at 2:00pm and lasts a little over two hours, so we should be back in Castle Rock around 5:30pm. They are holding 30 tickets for us, which must be purchased ahead, so the deadline to sign up is on Sign-Up Day.

FIRST GARDEN CLUB MEETING OF THE YEAR Monday, April 3 at 1:00 PM No Activity Fee We have a very special outdoor place - our vegetable garden which has raised “sit and garden” beds. That’s where all those vegetables come from during harvest season. April is Volunteer Appreciation Month - so thank those

folks in your community who give of their time. The Town

of Castle Rock relies heavily on the goodness of its citizens

to provide many services. While they receive a stipend,

elected officials volunteer many hours; let them know they

are valued. Appointed positions in town government are

often behind the scenes, yet take tremendous amounts of

time. Volunteers serve in valuable roles in our schools,

churches, civic organizations, youth organizations and

seniors organizations. Even if they don’t personally affect

you, these volunteers serve a vital role in increasing

available services and improving the places we live, all the

while not increasing fees or taxes.

Send people an actual written note, thanking them for their

service. You’d be amazed the joy that will bring. Even a

smile and a thank you to that volunteer standing in front of

Wal-Mart selling something will go a long way. If you so

desire, a homemade banana bread or a bunch of tulips to

say someone is appreciated may be the thing that keeps a

volunteer going!!

Our spring bowling season winds down this month. Congratulations to Kay and our team of

bowlers who are improving each week and having a blast. They will start up again in

September, and you can join them for all the fun.

We have 3 teams that play in area senior softball leagues, which run from April through August. The 70+ team, the Castle Rocks, plays on Mondays and is coached by Wes Johnson. There are two senior league teams, the

Castle Rockies and Castle Rockers, coached by Wes and by Preston Shepherd. They both play on Wednesdays. Practice begins in April. If you are interested in playing, call either of the coaches (see below).

With the warming weather, perhaps more of you might want to get outside and play some tennis. If you are interested, please contact the coordinators, listed below. They have men’s, women’s and couples

playing opportunities.

The league plays May through September on Tuesday mornings at Red Hawk Ridge. There is

a 9-hole and an 18-hole league. Subs are needed if you don’t want to play every week. If you are interested, call the coordinators at

the numbers listed below.

April will be the last month to play indoors at the Rec Center on Tuesday and Friday mornings 8:30-11:00 AM. Check in at the Rec Center front desk and pay regular fees. Next month we’ll move to our

outdoor courts. Check here for the schedule and possible clinics to learn how to play.
