Welcome to Skema’s second newsletter. A lot has been going on internally at Skema. A milestone achievement for us has been the integration of the SAP Enterprise Resource Planning system (ERP) to help improve our ef-ficiency, project management and most importantly our customer service. As they say “The Best-Run Businesses Run SAP”! A big thank you to all of our employees who made this challenging project successful, it would not have been possible without you!

The company is also proud to announce the acquisition of 50% of Didelme by Ske-ma. Through this acquisition Skema will leverage a great deal of expertise in PLC automation, SCADA application, IENMCS and DCS systems. It will also allow Skema to offer our clients more value-added solutions to integrate into our tradi-tional range of products.

Last, but not least, Skema won the Internationalization award organized by BtoB magazine (Best to Brianza) beating out well known companies like Canali. The winner was nominated based on their contribution to entrepreneurship in Brianza (the most industrialized region in Italy) and was selected from 120 companies by a team of authorities, trade and professional associations. This award was recogni-tion of our ability to successfully export our brand and expertise with determina-tion and perseverance.

Sinceitsfoundation40yearsago,Skemahaspursuedtheobjectiveofbeingalean,flexibleandpro-activeorganization,drivenbyitsprinci-plestooperateefficientlyandtoprovideitscustomerswithexcellentservice.

The significant development of the company over the years, its ex-pansion into international markets since the late ‘90s, and its co-operation with major partners have all generated the need to im-prove the company’s management system and its use of resources. Thisisthereasonwhy,in2010,SkemaunderwentathoroughGapAnaly-sis,inordertopinpointareasforimprovementinviewofitsfuturegoals. OneoftheactionsimplementedhasbeenthemigrationtoanevolvedERP(EnterpriseResourcePlanning)system–specifically,theinterna-tionallyrenownedSAPsystem.

Designedoverthesummermonthswiththehelpofaconsultingcom-pany,whichsupportedSkemaindefiningitskeyrolesandprocedures,the project implementation was based on a training plan and a testphase,whichcametoanendinDecember.

On10thJanuary2011SkemawentlivewithSAP.

Overallimprovementsareexpectedinthefollowingareas:

• jobplanningandprojectmanagement• productionplanningandstockmanagement• R&D,throughbettermechanical,electricalandprototypedesign• accountingandfinance• salesorderprocessingandstatistics• assetmanagement• humanresourcesmanagement.

Afewmonthson,wearestillworkingonmakingthemostofthesys-tem,butwecanalreadysayforsurethat:

• thedeadlineshavebeenmetthroughouttheplanningandimple-mentationphases

• the new system has resulted in a significant change to processmanagement.

The Karachaganak field, located onshore in western Kazakhstan(around150kmtotheeastofthecityofUralsk),wasdiscoveredin1979andisoneofthelargestgascondensatefieldsintheworld.

Coveringanareaof280km2andholdingover1.2billiontonnesofoilandcondensateand1.35trillionm3ofgas,thegiantKarachaganakfieldproducesanaverageof150,000barrelsofcondensateand20millionm3ofgasperday.

Theexpansionofthefiledhasinvolvedaninvestmentofover$5.5billion,makingitthebiggestinternationallyfundedprojectinKaza-khstan.

On behalf of the Bechtel Ltd/Snamprogetti UK joint-venture (whichwasinchargeofengineeringandprocurementfortheKarachaganakproject),SkemawasresponsibleforsupplyingaseriesofpackagedMV/LV substations and electrical switchboards, consisting of bothpowercentersandmotorcontrolcenters.

IN DeTAIL:• Nine Packaged Substations, complete with MV switchboards,

transformers,400Vswitchboards/MotorControlCenters,batteryandbatterycharger,distributionboards,HVACsystem,fireandsafetyandthelightingsystem.

• LVswitchgearsandMotorControlCenters.Skemasupplied20switchboards,more than250panels and1300motor starters.Key features of Skema’s“intelligent” MCC are its withdrawbleunitsandincomersequippedwithmicroprocessorrelays.Inad-ditionSkemaalsodevelopedtheElectricalControlSystemfortheKarachaganakprojectinKPCandUnit2.EachstationisequippedwithanRTU(RemoteTerminalUnit),whichcollectsdatafromtheswitchboardsandinterfaceswithDMSandDCS.

The accumulated data is then made available for visualisation onEwSandonplanDMS.Skemahassuppliedatotalofninepackagedsubstations forEarlyworks, two6kVpackagedsubstations forUnit3,apackagedsubstationforaFlashgascompressorcontrolroom,andaseriesofsevenpackagedsubstationsforawasteManagementComplex.

As for theswitchboards,Skemasupplied theKarachaganakprojectalonewithsome125MVpanels,670LVpanels,33RTUs,23110VDCpanels,morethan250relays,and2500drawers.

TheKarachaganak4thStabilisation&SweeteningTrainProjectaimsto increase the capacity of the existing Karachaganak ProcessingComplex(KPC)facilitiesthroughtheadditionofafourthtrain.

Intotal,morethan100SkemaPowerMotorControlCentercolumnsweresupplied,withmorethan300withdrawableunits.

Aspartof its long-termcommitment tohealth,safetyandenviron-mental protection, theKPOconsortiumhas completed constructionof anewEco-Center (wasteManagementComplex),whichhousesstate-of-the-arttechnologyandenablestherecycling,treatmentandsafedisposalofdrillingfluidsandwastes.

Skemawasawardedthecontractforthedesign,engineering,manu-facturing,inspectionandtestingof:• 1TransformerPackagedSubstation• LVSwitchgearPackagedSubstation

The transformers and substations were housed within a two-hourfire-ratedenclosure, andwere suppliedas completepre-wiredandassembled modular self-contained units, installed on concrete legfoundations1400mmaboveground,andequippedwithboltonstairsandaccessplatforms.Thetransformerspackageincluded2off,6/0.72kV,3MVAeach,toallowmaintenanceofoneunitwhile theother is inservice,aswellaspowerandauxiliarycablesforinterconnectiontothepackagedLVsubstation.TheLVsubstationpackageincludedaTCC690Vswitch-board,2off690/420V,400kVAeach, transformersandaTCC400Vswitchboard.

TheGulfareaasawholeisofthegreatestimportancetoSkema,notonlyduetotheprofoundinvolvementofallthecountriesinthatpartoftheworldintheOil&Gassector,butalsoduetotheforthcomingde-velopmentprojectssettobeimplementedintheenergyandindustrialinfrastructurefields.

Skema’scurrentpresenceintheGulfstillhasalongwaytogountilitreflectstheinternationalreputationofthecompany’sproducts,hencethemanagement’sdecisiontoinvestlocallyinthepromotionanddirectpresenceofSkemainthearea.

In2007,SkemaopenedaMiddleEastOfficeinAbuDhabi,intheUnitedArabEmirates.

AbuDhabiwasselectedthankstoitscentralpositionwithinanexten-siveareathatincludesimportantcountriessuchasSaudiArabia,Oman,Qatar,Kuwait,IraqandIran.Furthermore,intheUnitedArabEmirates,SkemahadjustcompletedoneofitslargestsupplycontractsintheGulfregion(OGDIIIHabshanProjectforBechtel/GASCO).

Twoyearslater,in2009,SkemaestablishedSkemaLLCinAbuDhabi,withaviewtostrengtheningitslocalpresence.

SkemaLLCwascreatedwithatwo-foldobjective:• topromotethedevelopmentofthebusinessintheGulfarea• tomakeavailableawealthoftechnicalexpertiseinthevicinityof

Skema’sexistingandpotentialGulf-basedclients.

ThefirststepsawaBusinessDevelopmentsectionbeingputinplaceatSkemaLLC,andafteraninitialperiodofnetworkingandpromotion,Skemahassuccessfullyregisteredasqualifiedvendoramongstalmostallofthepotentialend-usersofitsproductsintheUnitedArabEmirates,andinneighbouringcountries.

Subsequently,aTechnicalDepartmentwassetup.TechnicalservicesarenowbeingprovidedbySkemaLLC,notonlytoSkema’sclientsintheGulfareabutalso toSkema’sheadoffice inMilan (Italy)aspartofaglobalizationinitiativegearedtowardsmakingSkema’sexpertiseavailableworldwide.

Followingonfromtheestablishmentandconsolidationphases,thetimehascomeforSkemaLLC’sfurtherdevelopment.Skemaisplanningma-jorinvestmentsintheGulfareainordertoboostitsbrandrecognitionthere,and toachievea localpresence in linewith the reputation forqualitythatitsproductscanalreadyboast.

Early in 2011 Skema and Didelme Sistemi joined their consolidatedexperiencetoestablishSkemaDidelme,anewItaliancompanywhichmainscopeistoprovideitsclientswithcontrolsystemsandengineer-ingservices.

Thenewcompanyhasasolidbackground:Skemahasmanufacturedlowandmediumvoltageswitchboards,packagedsubstationsandlocalequipmentroomsfor40years,whileDidelmeSistemihasspecializedinPLCautomation,SCADAapplication,electricalandprocesscontrolsystems,overthelast25years.

Acombinationofexpertise,moderntechnologies,andtheknowledgeofalltheindustrialcommunicationprotocols,granttoSkemaDidelmethecapabilitytodesignandmanufacturecontrolsystemsthatenhancetheoperationoftheelectricalnetworkintermsofcost,safety,availabilityandpowerquality.

Thecompanydesigns,programsandcommissionscontrolsystemsforelectricalnetworksinstalledatoildrillinglocationsandatpetrochemi-cal,chemicalandmanufacturingfacilitiesallovertheworld.

January 2003, 11.40 pm, UralskAirport, Kazakhstan.Temperature: -20°C.Runwaycondition: icy.This is thebeginningofmyadventure.After a safelanding on a15 cm layer of ice, I disembarkedwithmywhite jacket andterriblebackpain.OnceIhadmanagedtoslowlyandpainfullyretrievemyluggage,getthroughpassportcontrolandexittheairport,noonewasthere–justsnow,afreezingwindandice:allthetaxishadgonebecauseitwassolateatnight.Ilitacigaretteandtriedtofigureoutwhattodonext.

At that point, in a remote corner of the carpark, headlights cameonandahugeblackSUVapproachedme.Fourmen, inblack leather jacketsand

blackhats,spoketomeinRussian.Icouldn’tspeakRussian,andtheyspokenoEnglish.InItalian,ItoldthemIwassupposedtobestayingatthePushkinhotelinUralsk,buttherewasnotaxitotakemethere.ThefourmenquicklyopenedthedoorsoftheSUV,putmyluggageintheboot,invitedmetoseat,anddroveoff.Afterpassingacheckpointafewkilometresfurtheron,theystoppedinthecarparkofthePushkinHotel.Igotoutandwasgivenmyluggage.Thementhenpromptlyleft.

Thenextmorning,twoengineerswhohadvisitedSkemaItalyforatrainingcoursetheyearbefore,cametothehotel,gavemesomepillstotreatmybackpain,appliedpatchestomybackandleftmetorest.TheyreturnedtwodayslatertopickmeupsothatIcouldfinallystartmybusinesstrip.

ThisexperiencegivesusaninsightintoadelightfulfacetofKazakhculture:ifyoufindyourselfintroubleinthishugeandmostlydesertedcountry,justwait.Innexttonotime,someonewillcometoyouraid.

IEC61850wasdefined tobecomean international standardmethodofcommunicationand integration,and tosupportsystemsbuilt frommultivendorintelligentelectronicdevices(IEDs)thatarenetworkedontheEthernet toperformprotection,monitoring,automation,metering,andcontrol.FirstinItaly,andinEurope,SkemaDidelmehasintegratedIEC61850devices intoan“Invensys”DCSapplicationwhich therefore controls,monitorsandtime-stampseventsofthemainMediumVoltagedistribu-tionswitchboardoftheelectricalnetworkofarefineryinSicily.Theintegrationhasbeenrealizedthrougharedundantgatewaywhichoperatesasclientof42SiprotecIED’s,installedina10kVswitchboardequippedwithfiveincomersontwobuses,interconnectedviasection-alizersandties.

Accordingtothestatusofthe incominglinesandtheprocessneeds,theuserscanbeconnected toeitherbus,whichgrants to selectupto 22 different configurations from the operator console of the DCS.TheSiprotecdevicescommunicateamongthemviaGoosemessagessothatswitchboardautomationisrealizedonlybymeansofEthernetcommunicationbasedontheIEC-61850protocol.

The integration between electrical data and process data is the firststep towards the evaluation of real time Key Performance Indicators(KPI),whichallowmanagersatallstagestodefinetheirperformanceparametersandtracktheirprogress.
